Man, Imhotep is the only villain I ever pitied. I was so pissed off at Ank-Su-Namun at the end of the 2nd movie. Like this guy resurrected her 3 times, done everything for her, he became cursed because of her and the only time he needed her to finally save him, she just left.
I really felt sorry for both of them in Mummy 1 my teenage was so angry that in the 2nd movie she completely dumped him then again now I do love that scene where Rick tells Evie to run away but she comes to save him while Imhotep to show that his love is strong too like theirs ironically asks Ank Su Namun to save him and She runs away..
Both fools, but he's the bigger idiot. Raising the dead is a huge transgression to the Nature's order, one that someone at his capacity should understand. Even Ra lives and dies everyday, who's a disgraced priest to dare an escape from that?
Exactly what I've been saying since I was a teenager. Why didn't she rub the paint with her hand and then when he accused her, she could show her hand and claim something bit her. She had to have known imhotep got paint on his hand. How could she not? Rub it hard with your hand and say something bit you. Bingo.
Guys guys, if there was even a slight itch, and if Pharoah was intelligent enough, he would have definitely asked to show her other hand if she really did itch. Now considering she was King's mistress, she would have a lot of female servers who could have itched for her. Then again, the question arises, why couldn't she paint those designs back and look clean?
Sad fact is after watching the mummy returns you are left with the question did she actually ever love Ihmotep or did she just use him as an escape from the pharaoh and thus set off a chain of events
The biggest question I had after watching the Mummy Returns is how was Imhotep able to briefly revive Anck-Su-Namun as a mummy in the first film? It was revealed she was reincarnated in the 2nd film which took place a few years later and she was a mature woman by that point. Reincarnation is basically recycling an old soul to give it a new life by being born again, so going by movie logic if Imhotep was successful in the first movie then there would be two separate Anck-Su-Namuns running around.
@@radicalthunder5740 No, he’s saying that the main actor played his role so well that he didn’t have to end up only ogling the attractive actresses out of boredom. Thus he remembers the quality of the movie versus only remembering it as “that movie with that had some hot actresses”
Even the Scorpion King film had beautiful women! The first one. And maybe the one chick from the 2nd/1st prequel film (let's just call it the 2nd film).
After the sequel ended, I feel very bad for Imhotep. The girl who he though loved him turned out to actually be deceiving him. He betrayed his Pharaoh and was sentenced to death in the worst way, all for nothing. If he had been more aware, none of this would have happened, but the movie would also be very short as well.
"So we're gonna kill this guy." "Oh yeah?" "We're gonna kill him in a way that doesn't kill him, and it actually turns him into a supernatural undead monstrosity with X-Men powers" "Wait what"
"And then, we're gonna give him powers" "Wait but" "And these powers will make him the most powerful being in world!" "This sounds more like a curse on us" "And then, we'll make him super strong and invincible!" "Ok I'm out"
You see i heard in a documentary that ancient cursed worked like more powefull is the curse, in this case, soul condamned to suffer for all eternity, more powerfull the mummy would be in the case of resurrection.

He was to suffer for all eternity, a living soul bound to a rotting corpse, buried forever beneath the sand. The ancient egyptians thought that giving him absolute power and immortality, wich he could then never use (as long as he wasnt released from his sarcopahgus (requires a special key) and some other idiots didnt rob Anck-Su-Namuns canopic jars( so he could consume them and restore himself)) combined with eternal agony would be the most suitable punishment for his crime. And they werent completly careless: they had these Desert-tribal dudes watch over him/the key and the canopic jars for more than 3 millenia and it worked out just fine
"Then what were Imhotep's priests doing in this forbidden recinct, painted like fucking statues and closing the gate behind you?" "Ehmmm...they set a private, living statue show for me? Ya know, sometimes I get bored, honey..." "And that included the "statues" dancing and touching you, right?" "Ehmmm.......die motherfucker!" (STABS him) See how that would not have worked?
Plus, wouldn't the heat make that paint melt? Come to think of it, how does she keep the paint or whatever that stuff is from smearing all over? Does the Pharoh have a secret graveyard of dead mistresses because he literally thought someone 'touched' his side piece?
Fun facts: Arnold Vosloo was utterly terrified when he was shooting the mummification scene because he was wrapped in the shroud for real and he could barely move. If you look closely, the wrapping on his nose was quite thin so he could breathe through it.
Fun fact: they also buried him in the sarcophagus with the scarabs many millennia back so he can rise up just in time to play the character when the shooting began.
@@JaleelBeig actually. the scarabs are just made of rubber and it was just toy spiders and cockroach to reenact as scarabs and then digitized it to add more particles of polygon scarabs
@@hiattgrey9161 he put him out of the sarcophagus and cut it all the bandages and then the empty sarcophagus is buried it so the viewers would think that arnold is buried alive. thankfully arnold vosloo was sitting down in the background to rest, drinking some orange juice and removing all the stitches and bandages while they are filming the scene where the medjai is burying imhotep even though its just an empty sarcophagus. well they actually put a prop deep composed skeleton covered in damaged bandages, and fake dry bloody meat that is made of hot sauce or ranch on the skeleton
My thing is…after Imhotep fully ressurected Anck-Su-Namun in The Mummy Returns, why he didn’t stop right there?! He was in love with her and finally got her back in her reincarnated body…If he had stopped right there, instead of going after the power and rule of Anubis’s Army, he could’ve lived his new life with her…maybe gotten mortal and started a family with her in the 1900s and lived his full life with her all the way to the end but it went to a tragic dark ending for both of them…
Likely the centuries of living plus the events of the first movie messed with his mind to the point that he got blindsided by power and revenge over his original goal.
Well, that depends how much Egyptology you want in the story. At the *very* least, Imhotep sinned grievously against the Goddess Ma’at by killing Pharaoh. His burial site was never sanctified, he never had the full rites, his name was not carved into his sarcophagus-thus stripping him of any identity in the afterlife. The movie version of Ankhsunamun didn’t fare much better. Also Osiris was one of the principle gods of the dead-Anubis ate the hearts of those judged unworthy: your heart was weighed against the feather of Ma’at, and Osiris judged you. The Pharaohs was considered the living Osiris (or Horus, it changed depending on the dynasty), and you can bet Osiris would have Some Thoughts about what should be done to Imhotep. (Plus, at that time, Egyptians considered the soul to be made of many parts, so resurrection, as we understand it, wasn’t even possible.) TL;DR: Imhotep seriously transgressed against no less than 3 of the major deities, not counting the gods and goddesses who would have also acted to punish him. Even with a fully resurrected Ankhsunamun at his side, he was a doomed man-revenant. Mummy. Whatever. “Go big, or go to oblivion” was pretty much his only option.)
@@serafilirose6685 May I ask, how did anck su namun & nefertiri was summoned back "from the underworld" by book of the dead in mummy 2, if their judgement day is already over centuries ago?
@@Sun.Shine- The honest answer is: because the original Mummy and the remakes were made by people who really didn’t know about the religions of ancient Egypt. The hand-wavey answer: Imhotep performed necromancy to draw forth enough of Ankhsunamun’s soul-but needed to implant her in Evy’s body because Evy had the missing (living) parts of Ankhsunamun’s soul. Nefertiri may have been sent back by Isis (being a Pharoh’s daughter, she was in line to be the Living Isis), who is known for Her great act of magic in resurrecting Osiris and conceiving Horus. It gets really twisty, as I can’t remember if Ankhsunamun and Nefertiri were even alive at the same time. The historical Ankhsunamun was the daughter of Amenhotep, and after his death, she desperately asked a foreign king for one of his sons to marry-he was killed en route, and I don’t really remember what happened to her after that. (My books are in storage!)
@@serafilirose6685 i dont believe that they took actual people from history, so that notion is out. But then i went on a knowledge run and there were people saying that imhotep blocked ASN's soul to get to the judgement chamber, thus making her stuck in the underworld so that he could resurrect her. Nefertiri, like you said might have got help from Isis, as she is pharaoh's daughter and might have been a patron devotee of her at the temple as well that she might have granted her the life that was taken away from her (and her purpose to fulfil the prophecy that led to scorpion king's death). I like to think that Imhotep and alex might have used different incantations for resurrections.
So Imhotep gets his tongue chopped off, then he gets mummified and put in a coffin, then gets carnivorous bugs dumped on him, then they put the coffin and another coffin and bury it. Not a good way to go.
It was 1999, I was 11, and it was the last day of year 6. My classmates and I all met up after our last day of school together to watch The Mummy. I sat next to my crush, shared popcorn, held hands and then we went off to our different schools. Since then, there have been kids, divorces, lost parents...life has happened. But this movie takes me back to being a kid again... It's a classic and maybe some day I'll have an 11-year-old kid who will love it too.
Still continues to be a movie that I love rewatching. The actors and actresses are amazing in their roles and the plot and scenery are incredible 👏❤ 10/10 movie
The story telling and the attention to detail in both the Mummy movies is unparalleled compared to the movies that comes out today. It makes me wanna possess each and every item they show in the movie, such as, the book, the key, the way they’ve been designed. Pure awesomeness! I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched both movies. There’s action, fantasy, comedy, love, drama, magic and mystery, a bit of everything, so perfectly woven into two movies. I wish someone makes another movie like this soon.
Agreee....which proves ...that the ultra modern and expensive vfx got nothing....against a good story....and great actings ...the 90's was simply the best of times....they can't make it like this nemore 😐
When you really think about it, Imhotep's whole motivation was to be with Anck-Su-Namun and later to resurrect her back from the dead. If he had just stopped at that and not wanted to take over the world, he truly would be the victim here.
Guard : Why are we making him an immortal superpower monster? Chef : Because we never perform this curse before so we would like to try it at least once. Guard : But he will destroy the world and enslave Humanity...... Chef : oh well, sucks to be them
well it was to make him "immortal" to suffer for an enternity and not go to the other side/leave this planet. however, if he broke his chain... he would have been the walking dead.
Sad fact is here you realize that originally at least, Imhotep simply loved her and her love was what kept him going. Even in death. He wasn't the megalomaniac that the Dragon Emperor was. His smile at the end, in the Mummy Returns was beautifully tragic. It spoke of heartbreak. There at the end of all things. After having endured the Homdaii, after enduring a resurrection and the Underworld, facing the Scorpion King without his powers, being still kind to a child, of his enemy nonetheless... Yes Imhotep you weren't THAT bad a guy.
The 1999 Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy was much better than the 2017 Tom Cruise version. Unfortunately, the 3rd Brendan Fraser Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was a downfall b/c they replaced actress Rachel Weisz with Maria Bello when technically to complete the trilogy successfully, they could have kept Rachel for all 3 Mummy films.

Rewatched this movie yesterday for the first time in a while and I realised something that I never realised before: They killed Seti because Anck-su-namun actually hated him and wanted to be with Imhotep because she knew he would treat her better. I know they’re villains but their scenes together in the sequel always warm my heart!
@@MrJordwalk There is a difference between killing someone because of hating them particularly, due to them having done something which you didn't like VS. killing someone because they were in the way of something you wanted very much.
Lol Brendan actually pranked Arnold on this scene by dressing up as Anck-su-namun with gold paint and all....I can only imagine the hilarity that ensued
When pharao courted her she was probably so happy, didn't know power come with responsability , so she manipulated virgin and naive priest and set event that led to the almost end of human kind Girls i know you are not raised to think that way but choice have consequences and having it all is very very hard , when you get power you have responsability , when you have money you wont have time ,when you are famous private life become hard to have ,when you let him cum inside you are the responsible lol I feel like i just started a war lol
Zencann well they wanted to bind his soul in a rotting body to agonize forever as long as no idiot opened his sarcophagus. They also placed numerous failsafes in place, like locking they key, the book, ank su na mun, and the 3 jars separate from him. They also installed the magi tribe to watch over should any mercenary idiot open the tomb. It worked for millenia before brendan frasier came.
Even with the misdeeds and crimes he committed against the Pharaoh, it seems like you can't help but pity what Imhotep had done for his love of Anck-Su-Namun.
Especially after the second movie. After he worked so hard to revive her, she abandons him when the going gets tough and Immohtep, filled with sadness, jealous for the pure love shown by Evie and Rick, decides that a life without her is not worth living, and allows death to consume him.
According to wikipedia, "Imhotep" translates from hieroglyphics to "the one who comes in peace" - Imhotep is a real historical figure. Guess that info didn't escape the writers from Universal of the original character, and it was a deliberate pick for a name ... or else it is pretty ironic naming the main antagonist so.
Dfathurr lol I'll say djoser ruled towards the end of the 3rd dynasty and seti i ruled towards the beginning of the 19th dynasty so there was over 1,000 years of separation between the two
Greg Lyris “Imhotep” was also the name of the mummy in the original 1932 “The Mummy” film. My guess is that the filmmakers wanted to pay tribute to the classic movie.
Correct, and with respect, I'm aware about the original movie. That's the reason I referred to a original mummy character in my comment, I was referencing the original writers.
lol when he said who had touched you she could have said it was just an itch relax and they could've avoided all that I've always thought that ever since I saw this movie when I was 7 I'm. 19 now
huss353 it wouldn't make sense for her to say that though. If anything it would make the pharaoh even more suspicious of her. She's been wearing that paint on her body for a while now So even if she did have to scratch herself by now she should now how to scratch herself without messing it up. The pharaoh knew that which is why he asked her "who has touched you". Plus by that point he adlready seen Imhotep's priests so he kind of figured out the answer to his own question.
It's just way so ironic.... Here in the past, Anck Su Namun is willing to kill herself for the sake of her love for Imhotep (even though followed by her expectation to be resurrected by him)... But when she's finally reborn and even after her soul is reunited into her reincarnated body, Meela Nais, she become a completely different person... Even though Imhotep is the big bad and ruthlessly cruel, but it's just pity for him when he cheated death for the second time JUST to be reunited with his Anck Su Namun, then he's betrayed by her just like that... Meela Nais a.k.a Anck Su Namun turned out to be far worst and bigger bad than Imhotep... Thank goodness she had it coming not long after she cowardly flee instead of saving Imhotep...
Could just be that she's not willing to die the fourth time? Like once, okay, *Imhotep will revive me* , second time, *oh god, finally* , third *Holy shit, I'm alive again...* fourth *Nu uh bitch* , not that I don't feel bad for Imhotep for being left to die in the end but I get Anck Su Namun reasons as well
@Mihael Keehl she wasnt just anck su namun she was also a new version just like Evey, so maybe the newer version was a punk. But gotta remember she technically died twice for him, when they tried too resurrect her and jonathon put the guards on, I guess she thought dying twice was enough. But it broke my heart his expression watching her run away and seeing rick and evey fighting for each other
2:32 She’s got a lot of GUTS! As a kid I used to parody this, say the ancient Egyptian words and pretend to stab myself in the gut. Fond childhood memories 🤣
This movie always fascinates me so much, I’ve already love it since i was a kid. This was the first movie I ever watched that got Ancient Eqypt in it and for that I’ve been proper fascinated by the process of mummification, Ancient eqyptian religion etc… but I have to admit after all this time, I was so curious on how did Imhotep get hes message “Death is only the beginning” on the coffin if for 1 he can’t see what he’s writing 2. He’s hands where proper tied when he was mummified and 3 he was being eaten alive by ancient Scarabs bugs. There’s no way he can do all of that with all that stuff happened to him. I hope someone on here can explain it to me as I’m completely puzzled on it.
It’s a great film right! I watched it first when I was about 6/7, was petrified for years until I became an adult and then I became fascinated by the Ancient Egypt element and the overall story! I imagine Imhotep’s curse makes him kind of like a zombie/vampire, as in he’s undead, or undying (so won’t grow old and die). So he’s ‘alive’ the whole time and is being eaten alive over and over again for thousands of years, so much so that he probably learned to endure the pain of being eaten by the scarabs and was then able to dig his own message into his coffin. But by the same logic though, the scarabs should have eaten him dry by now, so I assume he has some form of healing factor in a way (even before he assimilates the 5 thieves and is fully restored) and is in a constant limbo of being eaten alive? I mean that’s horrible man 💀
@@griffith2995 who knows man, I wonder why he’s so “juicy” by the time his tomb was opened if he wasn’t able to ‘heal’ somehow. They also mentioned he was meant to suffer for all eternity? It’s not entirely clear. Probably “because plot” lol.
@@BreezyMkII I think you have a point with the “suffer for all eternity” thing: The scarabs eat his flesh to the bone. (Similar to how bones are cleaned in a forensics lab). No more meat, viscera, or fluids, the scarabs die, the pain ends. Not much of an eternity! But! Imhotep has canopic jars (those jug like things, usually used to hold the heart, brain, etc.) an important part of the funeral magic the priests did. Now, what if, instead of the usual oils, herbs, and natron used in burial, they used something else? The dead also had a few talismans to help them into the afterlife. What if the equivalent of black magic was used.? He’d helped kill his Pharaoh, who was believed to descended from the gods and would become a god after death. So Imohotep and Ankhsunamun did a crime worse than John Wilkes Booth, Judas, and that guy who tried to kill Pope John-Paul 2 combined. I suggest the curse was so strong, it interrupted the normal cycle of life and death: he was a “juicy” mummy because even *bugs* were repelled by his evil. With his consciousness tied to his bones that could never crumble away, he might have scratched the words in himself, flaking off the material one millimeter at a time, picking at the same spots, while the words pulsed in his soul that had no escape, no voice, and no power, so long as he was “lost.” Creepy, isn’t it?
@@serafilirose6685 You might be onto something there! Especially based on how blasphemous his killing of the pharaoh was. They even suggested that him being buried under the statue of Anubis meant that he was either “someone very important…or did something very naughty”. His curse had to have some special features to it to ensure his death wasn’t a quick one (beyond the ‘first’ death when he’s initially given the Homdai).
I think that the Egyptians believed that the soul is eternal ...... Just like we hindus believe .......we burn out the body but the soul has the power to take another birth ....we believe that a soul may not get another body if he dies a painful death with incomplete desires connected to other person .....may be love or hate . That is why .....our greatest ancient knowledge preaches about how to get liberation ......

Did the Egyptian think that maybe they don't want to give a murdering criminal a curse that also gives immortality and super powers?
They could have just, you know...cut his head off and throw his body in the dumpster or something.
They had an absurd amount of failsafes. The key if I recall for the novel version was burried in the sand and Rick O'Connell just stumble upon it.
Well... He got the Pharaoh killed. That's probably the worse of the worst crime you can commit in any ancient civilization.

Fun facts: Arnold Vosloo was utterly terrified when he was shooting the mummification scene because he was wrapped in the shroud for real and he could barely move. If you look closely, the wrapping on his nose was quite thin so he could breathe through it.
I bet it took him a while to let him out of the bandage.
@@JaleelBeig What a commited actor, trully remarkable
(Plus, at that time, Egyptians considered the soul to be made of many parts, so resurrection, as we understand it, wasn’t even possible.)
TL;DR: Imhotep seriously transgressed against no less than 3 of the major deities, not counting the gods and goddesses who would have also acted to punish him.

Greg Lyris indeed. imhotep is also in charge of building pyramid of djoser. which is far from the era of seti 1
Dfathurr lol I'll say djoser ruled towards the end of the 3rd dynasty and seti i ruled towards the beginning of the 19th dynasty so there was over 1,000 years of separation between the two
Greg Lyris
“Imhotep” was also the name of the mummy in the original 1932 “The Mummy” film. My guess is that the filmmakers wanted to pay tribute to the classic movie.
Seriff Pilcrow Yeah and I think the girl in that was supposed to be the reincarnation of a princess named ankha which is kinda similar to anck

Maybe she didn't really love Imhotep in the first place.
She never loved him just the power that she knew he could wield
Could just be that she's not willing to die the fourth time? Like once, okay, *Imhotep will revive me* , second time, *oh god, finally* , third *Holy shit, I'm alive again...* fourth *Nu uh bitch* , not that I don't feel bad for Imhotep for being left to die in the end but I get Anck Su Namun reasons as well
@Mihael Keehl she wasnt just anck su namun she was also a new version just like Evey, so maybe the newer version was a punk. This movie got me love Egypt and and all its ancient stories
@@BreezyMkII I think you have a point with the “suffer for all eternity” thing:
The scarabs eat his flesh to the bone.
With his consciousness tied to his bones that could never crumble away, he might have scratched the words in himself, flaking off the material one millimeter at a time, picking at the same spots, while the words pulsed in his soul that had no escape, no voice, and no power, so long as he was “lost.”
Creepy, isn’t it?

Hmm maybe it's the nostalgia talking to me now, but I seriously prefer this opening scene by far to the newer one. This was made so many years ago but still Egypt and the people looks so beautiful and impressive.
The movie that made my childhood along with part 2 😭👌✨🎬🤩🤩🤩
This scene is so funny 😭
the part where imhotep gets mummified alive used to scare me shitless when i was a kid. its been so many years now and it still does
It actually scared Arnold Vasloo too because he is claustrophobic.
They forgot to tell the actor that he will be wrapped up and with bugs.
Imhotep in the end more faithful to his lover than his lover( Ack-nak-sun-amun)
I remember seeing this at a friends sleepover when I was 8.
Scared the shit out of me. Didn't sleep a wink.
Dark, mystic and ancient...who doesn't want it!
.
Are you talking about the priest or the book?
I wish I can live in that era
@@davidortiz3094 no you dont my guy
From back in the day when they were able to make a movie that tells a story.
Crazy how he gained supernatural powers by being cursed. How you cursed and get stronger because of it. And the only drawback was a fear of cats
Facts cats are the guardians of the underworld so yeah since imothep hadn't fully regenerated he would fear cats cause he would believe they could send him to the underworld
This movie Never jets old🔥⚡️
My all time favourite movie.❤❤❤🇧🇩
We have this classic, "The Mummy" and now we have 2017 version, "The TOMmy"
More like “The Dummy”
I was 9 years old when this movie came and everybody in my class talked about it and felt bad for Beni. My dad rented the movie so I could see it and I also felt bad for Beni until my dad said don't feel bad for someone who is greedy. 😂
Did you feel bad for Imhotep?? I never felt bad for Beni just pity since his greed made him die in such horrific way in the end till then he survived well by being smart
"No other man was allowed to touch her"
*IMMEDIATELY TOUCHES HER*

love mummy 1 and 2. the couples were a real hit.
Hello Joy
They sure don't make them like this anymore. It's sad seeing your childhood heroes get old.
1:55 The link between the scenes of Pharoah getting taken out and Mummy 2 was great... how they combined both the scenes together in the sequel
Imhotep : "I'll break free and I'll be unstoppable!!"
Ancient egyptians : "No. We have the ultimate failsafe. Brendan Fraser."
