- We recently got 18 specialty silkie hatching eggs but only 3 hatched, but why? Well we forgot this crucial step when it comes to getting fertile hatching eggs in the mail, we forgot to let them rest for 6-12 hours before placing them in the incubator.

We ordered 18 fertile silkie eggs a few weeks ago and only 3 of the silkie eggs hatched, and we think this is why. It has been a while since we actually bought mail ordered hatching eggs from a breeder, and we totally forgot this step when it comes to incubating eggs, and that is letting the hatching eggs rest for six to twelve hours before putting them in your incubator. You do this because the hatching eggs get shook around from being mailed and they just need to rest before and settle before going in your forced air incubator or still air incubator. And we are pretty sure us forgetting this crucial step is the main reason our silkie eggs did not hatch. Most of the time, it is not the chicken breeders fault, the eggs are more than likely fertile or most of the eggs are, but the probable reason is the fact the hatching eggs did rest and settle prior to incubation. So toady we got another batch of special silkie eggs, which silkies are our favorite chicken breed, and these fertile hatching eggs came from a chicken farm called Alabama Silkies. They will be show quality chickens and this time we did let the eggs actually rest for eight hours before placing the egg sin the RCom 50 incubator. Another tip for hatching chicken eggs is to use distilled water in your incubator, and also try not to mix other eggs with your new mail ordered hatching eggs you just bought. Remember that your incubator temperature needs to be set at 99.5 degrees and that the incubators humidity needs to be set at 60 percent, and be sure to use an automatic egg turner or if you have a small incubator or homemade incubator, you need to hand turn the hatching eggs several times a day. Also chicken eggs, no matter the breed of chicken, will take up to 21 days for the chicks to hatch, and we usually put the eggs on lock down on day 19, which means we do not open the incubator at this point and turn the incubator's temp down to 99.1, but not all incubators have the ability to get that specific, but do not fret. Most of the time, you an your new hatching eggs will be just fine and hatch with no issues. But since these are are special or rare eggs because of the show quality of the breed of the chicken, we are being as specific as we can with these heritage breeds chickens. If you do not know, the silkie is one of the oldest breeds of chickens from Asia and there are even documentations from the travels of Marco Polo.

I gotta tell you though I worked for post office 25 years and have delivered a lot of things but when I delivered anything fragile or live chicks or ducks I always treated them as precious as if they were a newborn baby
Thank you so much for that also I hear a lot of truck drivers keeping them by cold or their A|C's so on their way to delivery they can get to cold and die it's sad. I rescued a bunch of meat chickens that are different breeds from a website about a year ago like lots of them and they are living happily and well alive with the rest of my sheep's and ducks.
I just lost two ramshorn snails that were meant to arrive next day first class signed for and were just put through the letterbox over a week later than they were meant to arrive covered in FRAGILE, URGENT and LIVE ANMAL stickers :(
Omg thats so nice of you. I have some eggs coming to me and I hope they handle with care. I’m always grateful for usps delivery because I am way out but your so kind.
I wish more carriers staff were like you!
I've known enough box pushers to know that the ones out of sight are less careful.
I just feel the urge to scream my announcement.. I finally put in an offer on a 10 acre farm in Scotland, Ar... I'm so nervous and excited
did you succeded?
Did they take your offer?
no one asked
Omg I'm putting my offer in tonight on a ten acre farm too! Good luck with yours! I'm so excited for us!
Good job 👏 👍
Of all the families I watch here and all the children, I believe that you and your precious daughter are so nice to watch together. The three of you just seem so happy together building your Family farm.
Thank you so much!!
This family is one of the best on UA-cam so we are asking our fellow UA-cam watchers to share their videos with all your friends please. Thx!
Thanks DB!!
So true!
Oh how cute is nugget and look how she’s grown , I want one lol ,can’t wait for the kids to be born , I think five between them , another brilliant video xx
I hope you have better luck with the new silky eggs. Nugget is such a sweetheart! You are all so good to the animals. They couldn’t be in better hands, Be well!🦆🐓🦃🐥🦚🐖🐐
It’s so great you’re letting MC explore her passion
Great PARENTS Here.
Love the update in the goats. We bought 3 baby Nigerian dwarf goats goats 6 months ago and bottle fed them (thanks to yalls videos) and now they’re just the sweetest girls. -named them Rose, Blair, and Dorthy after the golden girls 🤣. Love yalls family and homestead. Very inspiring ❤️ btw I think ‘Bootsie’ is having triplets!
I put a box fan on with my chickens at night to keep the mosquitos off them.
Oh I loved nugget getting a cool bath.... And hearing mary-carl giggling 🤣🤣
I'm lending to three...It seems that Nugget was meant to be on this homestead. Peaches is still number " 1 " haha
Peaches...what??? Pig shows you say...I am all the pig you will ever need to see, got it!! I love it when you pet on her and she starts to really talking to ya!! Boy you cleared that fence like it weren't nothing dude!! Emu spa day!! Rub a dub dub one emu in a tub!! Nugget is so awesome!! Blessings!!
The indoor rest period is to let air cells begin to recover and temp/humidity acclimate to Incubation room conditions 6-12 hrs may be enuf for farm fresh eggs - but its 12-24 for Shipped eggs!! Also - no turning for Shipped eggs the first few days in incubator.
I have just fallen in LOVE with this Family 👪 ❤, wish every family & child could Experience the Joy of Farmlife & children could have the experience of day to day life of responsibility and love that the animals bring . Hard work growing up, but the simplicity and memories are AMAZING ! God bless ! Thanks for sharing your lives with us All 🇺🇸 🙏. Penney C.
You were a success with the Silkie eggs, Love this channel and all of your interaction and the love and care you give them, can't wait to see the Goats born, do you let your subscribers name them, have a Happy Day!
Another awesome video with your awesome family. Never knew emus could be that friendly. Hope you get to film the goats birthing. 🥰
My youngest daughter, she’s 5 years old and I watch you videos. She loves them! Awesome video.
We look forward to seeing them! My wife loves them to 👍👍
I’m thinking Bootsie is gonna have two big babies. Also, I love how she shook her head as if to say “no, I don’t want the tree treats”🤣😁
I think she has 4 babies in her belly. She’s big. 🐐🐐🐐love MC laugh when her dad was putting water on nugget she is so cool 😎
As ALWAYS I learn something and with all the love on the FARM.Love y'all from SW LOUISIANA.
The humidity might be the problem. I had the same thing happen to me too. So we tried dry incubation. Were you don't put water in the incubator until lockdown. We had ours at 40- 45% humidity until it was time for lockdown. But I don't know anything about hatching out silkies 😕
Yes it is such a gamble with shipped eggs but letting them rest is supposed to help the air sacs to reattach but sometimes it still doesn’t work. I wish the postal office were a little more gentle on eggs. Goats are my favorite 🥰
You had me at baby emu bath!!! Great content here guys
omgoodness Nugget was so small here! I can't handle the cuteness
Ok guys, what did I miss? What was the mistake you made with the silkie eggs in the incubator?
Yeah, it’s weird, they dont mention it in the video, but the descriptions says why; they didn't let it sit for 6-12 hours
How many hatched out of those even?
@@Posmlady he said just 3
Love yalls videos. Such an inspiration. I have a silkie sitting on some eggs right now. The rooster is a serama silkie cross can't wait for eggs to hatch
I love how Nugget seems good to follow y'all pretty nicely. Wonder if that will continue as she matures. That would be so amazing😁
Thanks always feel better after watching you videos you're one of my favorite channels
What a beautiful family. Your daughter and animals are so lucky. Well done mum and dad
I love Silkies! They're always so sweet when I get to see them in person. What does turning the eggs pointy end down do that makes them more likely to hatch?
Makes for larger air pocket for the chicks
Oh my gosh three at a time ? Can't wait to see!
Love the Ace Ventura reference at the beginning. Just had your channel suggested to me. This is my first video. I AM SO a sub now.
You have one of the best, most entertaining channels on You Tube !
Bootsy is gonna 💥!! Good stuff on that feed and water tray. I did one very similar last year and it worked great. Every so often I’d have to use a brush and water to scrape off any droppings that build up where the wire is mounted to the wood frame. It definitely helps with the shavings though. Y’all be good 👍
I am so impressed with your set up. Your farm is beautiful! So clean and well laid out. Very jealous :)
Howdy there partners,y'all have a beautiful farm and setup. Thanks for the videos keep up the great work
Love the food & water holder idea. I’m gonna try it for sure😀
Another great vlog! Cog Squad in the house. ❤💜
Nugget did a GREAT imitation of a duck!
Awww I’m sorry MC’s hatching didn’t do great. She tries SO hard bless her heart. I’m sure this next go round will be better. Blessings always ~Lisa
The goats look like they are doing really good!
The mail clip had me rolling on the floor
Ya never know Jason she may have four tiny babies nugget is a cutie pie.🌷
We’ve started using Rabbit water era for our chicks! Great video!
I can't wait to see the baby goats. 😊
I can feel any breeders anxiety flare up when he said I wish all 14 hatched =)
The ducks said yess. Get nugget a large kiddie pool. That way they can steal it. Lol
We would love to buy the Silky shirts that Mary Carl designed
Nugget's looking good. I can't wait till he meets the baby goats.
That Emu loves you guys so much. It will be fun watching her grow. I'm so sad about MC's eggs that didn't hatch. I'm sure there will be more to come in the near future. Looking forward to goat baby antics! BTW - how's Rod? I saw where he got better, but haven't seen him highlighted lately (unless I missed something). .
Rod is good, he has retired permanently in the MC's coop :)
Nugget enjoyed that bath.... awesome guys...
🎉Good Morning Cog Squad🎉
too bad about hatch, hopefully get some breeders from 3, going with 2 kids a coming, lol.
Wow, nugget was really loving that bath.
great video, Thanks
I love your dedication to building a resolution to the problem of getting shavings in feed and water but chicks can easily be taught to drink water from a rabbit bottle. Keeps poop, shavings and feed out. Like $4 at Wal-Mart and reduces the risk of some folks cutting off fingers with power tools lol
Vote: Bootsie will have triplets!
I THINK twins..
Yea
Two on the side one in the middle
I was watching Hoss Tool they mentioned cog hill that’s how I found you’re page just subbed
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video Jason. Y'all have a Happy Thanksgiving
Oh my god it works I just hatched a little chick he's so cute you can do it with a Supermart egg too that's what I did mine with
Necessity is the mother of invention! ☺️
I enjoy the Nugget footage!
I hope y’all are doing well ! I’m scared half to death of this covid we have not been feeling well so we are quarantine at home
You guys are the best.❤🌻❤
Im from Australia and that is cool how you have a emu over there haha
Thank you I was going egg in lucky they sent that way and I have pointed down good luck on hatch
Uww! Yay. I like that raised feeder thingy.
Nugget !! Love the fan 💡 idea I did that for my chickens
I am sooooo sorry to hear that I know that they are very special to mary carlson! XX
Goats carry their babies on the right side, that’s why Bo’s right side is bigger! 😊 I just love Capris colors too! I’m partial to darkly colored goats though 😂
I LOVE black and white.
Seconds brownsssssss and whitesss
They are such gorgeous COLOURS.
Sometimes they look like they have eye makeup. Just BEAUTIFUL.❗💖🌹💐🌷🌹🌹💐🌹🌹💐🌷💖🍪🀄🌷
I love your channel it just popped up about 3 months ago i love nugget oh i love it all God Bless from Oregon
Check your goat's ligaments every morning. There are two pencil sized ligaments running just under and alongside the tailbone. When she is ready to kid, you will no feel those ligaments. The other thing to watch is the udder. Her udder isn't very big, so you still have time. She should get an enlarged udder within a week of kidding. Their belly will drop when the kids get closer to the birth canal. This means that there will be a caving to the side.
Three! It is hot here in TX also but we’re getting breaks with summer showers.
Y'all just delightful 😊
Twins for both.... I’m with you I love the darker of the new goats, that’s sad more silky didn’t hatch... did you build nugget her own crib/ pen?
Having watched many a goat birth from Blue Cactus, I can say you never know with goats. They carry so oddly.
Peaches seems to be ready to hatch !! Hehe
It is understandable, excitement took over the thinking part of the brain. I think we have all made that fatal mistake! Lessons learned and MC has that filed in her brain of facts to not be forgotten! Just look at it like a positive, 3 hatched!
I had a horrible hatch rate from my silkies too. Out of 16 shipped from a reputable breeder, only 2 hatched😞
Denise Kirk wow. I don’t hatch silkies, but breeding Cochin Bantams. Have never shipped eggs before, or used an incubator (only broody hens). I think shipping is just the main problem. So far, I’ve had 95% fertility from my girls. But I have the parents here and such. It may just be silkies as well. But I know lots of silkie breeders with high fertility rates for their silkies. But again, they don’t ship eggs, they have the parents there. 🤷🏼♀️
I’m unsure about this. Some people have suggested humidity issues, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the shipping part.
Ah that’s sad, but at least you had 3. ❤️🥰 is it me or is peaches gained wait. Can’t wait to see the baby goat.
Oh nooo... So sad about the silkies. But thats what happens when you don't let Miss P. do it. It never gets done correctly if she's not supervising..... Fingers crossed it works this time!
7-21-20, Hey everyone, Jason, Mrs, cog hill, and Mary Carl and nugget and Boss peaches, I finally got my new drivers license that I've been waiting for, I dropped my CDL, after 41years, with no tickets and no accidents, safe driving, I had to stop driving because of my diabetes and other health problems, now I'm waiting for my birthday in August, 15th, for the big 65yrs old. Anyway hello my new friend nuggets, I see you are getting big, and hello, boss peaches and tipper and topper and Scott and Mrs. Scott and foxie and the dogs and the cat's and all the other animals, I hope you all are doing well, it's been super hot here in Chicago and in Selma, stay cool and tell boss Jason to sprinkle all of you with some water to keep you all cool.
I am you but a year older. Enjoy retirement. Change makes you anxious but enjoy it.
Rcom r the Best...I have a MaruMax 1000 holds 576eggs...only had to replace the pump in last 7yrs....the bs hatcher is the problem but sorted...I don't use Chinese thermostat anymore only Inkbird made in USA. ..new sub..🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺😎
So sorry about the silkies, lesson learned. Is Nugget still sleeping with Mary Carl? Our goats would have chewed the fan cord if we didn’t put it up and over the roof! Platform for water/food, that’s a game changer, way to go.
Yes. There is a pig show. Every time you show peaches she steals the show. 😆
Love your vids
Awesome video. "Silkie Silkie Silkie"
What i believe is that when people wrap there eggs in plastic they forget that the eggs still need to breathe. Also the post office needs to treat every package as if their is life in every package held responesable when the box is destroyed
I think maybe you need to visit a UPS or USPS when they are sorting and loading packages. We all expect 2 day shipping. There is simply no way to expect fast shipping and careful handling. I’ve worked at both and the packages that come in to be sorted is absolutely crazy. I’m surprised we get packages on time and mostly undamaged as it is now.
that was a fun video :-)
3:28 the rooster made a beautiful sound
Is nugget water habit a natural habit for cleaning?
Hatched 7 out of 12. First time in the new incubator
I like how he sounds like that man from family guy whoose always after Chris 😂
THAT UPS GUY!! LOL
love the vlogs
Nuggets got it gooood, real coool.
Bootsie was counting 2. One on each side. Be careful she might know what you are saying. Lol
Nugget has grown so much. Sorry about the silkies
great video
I can always count on your videos to make me smile. Except maybe that time Peaches was sick, or you kinda set yourself on fire, or . . . well, almost all the time. Thank you.
Our bantams hatched on day 19, so I may expect a bit earlier for them to hatch.
Just a heads up, ya know?
I was surprised when that happened. (Millie Fluer Cochin Bantams) But silkies can also come in regular size, it’s just really hard to find them, but just saying anyway.
Hi..... Jason, Cog Hill Family Farm. I love your video and I really enjoyed, thank you for sharing your video homestead chicken farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🦃🐕🐖🐈🌱🐐🎥👍👍👍
