If it doesn't pip after day 23, you can break it open a little and look. One day I threw the unhatched eggs in a garbage bin after 23 days, then 1 was actually alive. I kept it alive with a warm waterbottle and towels cause his mom, brothers/sisters were already on the move. Then after 1 night I put it in the same pen and the mother looked at it strangely. But accepted her baby. It grew up healthy.
I had a hen hatch out eggs and I wrote her first day down and she hatched our 5 eggs in 18 days, I was a bit shocked they hatched so soon I thought three days early was a lot but apparently not if 5 eggs hatched.
this was so very helpful for me. I water candled 8 eggs, 5 are alive - 3 were not... when I opened 2 of the dead ones they EXPLODED! chicks were dead maybe a day or so, fully grown and feathered, must not have been able to pip. What does it mean if an egg sinks to the bottom completely? I know for a fact that there is a baby in it, I've candled it throughout the process of incubation, but now I see no movement and it sunk during the water test. It's also a duck not a chicken so that may be a factor.
If the egg sinks, but still moves, if you are very watchful, and know what to do, the chick can still survive. It is not floating because the air cell is too small. So if you can tell when it internally pips, you can then make a small hole in the end where the air cell should be. This will allow more air to be able to enter the shell, for the chick to breath. as long as the chick can get air, it will survive. I have had this happen. My Great grandpa owned a chicken farm. ANd we have had chickens our whole life. And this is more common than people realize. Most will discard the egg the minute it sinks. When they should just wait to see if it moves. The chick could very well still be alive inside. And with just a little bit of intervention, can survive! and with really very little effort! Just the time watching is all it really takes. Takes just a minute to poke a hole through the shell. ANd the chick will do the rest!
Hi, sparrow laid three eggs but one only egg was hatched but the other two egg was not hatched and the mother sparrow left the two egg and got left with the one little bird.
+Adam R That is called candling and at this stage of development it yields little results. Once the chick grows large enough to press against the inside of the shell you will see nothing at all except where the air pocket is. Plus dark colored shells like what I have are harder to candle even at earlier stages.

I found your channel on my search for the egg float viability test. My incubating hatching eggs are on Day 24 and I've decided to give them til Day 25. Today I'm considering this test. Appreciate the video. Just read the comment below. Perhaps this test is not reliable??? Did you build the small poultry house? If so is there a video? This would be perfect for broody bantams.

In response to your question about reliability. The reliability of the test (or lack there of) would be if it indicated an egg was NOT viable. Then when I cracked it open, found a live chick inside. That would indicate an unreliable test. What happened in my instance would not reflect on its reliability because as I state in the video this test will not tell you if a chick will or will not hatch. It sorts the not viable ones from the potentially viable ones. Plus their is an element of subjectivity to it in relation to how high or low the egg is sitting in the water. I have had success with late hatching eggs in the past even manually assisting a few but never with eggs that were sinkers or bobbers. With that said however, it is definitely not a foolproof test. If you come across one that is please share. Thanks.
I appreciate your response. I don't believe there is anything 100% full proof other than an ultrasound machine. Even candling is questionable on viability during the later stages of incubation. Sometimes the chick doesn't move. I couldn't find the video on the tiny coop 7:05 although I did see two others (Simple & Easy Coop w/green roof and Chicken Coop Part 1 & 2).
+LilBit AtATime My thoughts exactly on all those points. Yeah the tiny one shown in the video at the time stamp you gave me will be the chicken coop parts 1 and 2 videos. It was built to double as a transport carrier so it fits in the back of an SUV. We no longer use it as a dedicated chicken coop anymore. We use it for broody hens and nursing rabbits. Hope you enjoy the videos.
I have a broody hen and the 10 other hens are picking on her now she is staying in the box . Ts snowing and cold so what do I do with her in the crate. To break her . Inside the run?

Candling just shows the size of the chick and the air sac. Not all chicks move around at the end before hatching. It's not easy to tell if a full term chick is still alive.
It's also very difficult to see into a late term egg as the chick may be taking up much of the space of the egg and as James said may not have visible movement.
I have an incubator but fertized eggs complete their 21_ days so I also wait 3ndays mornbon the morning 24st day it start hatched and it was too late for incubating them

put the chicks and the eggs in a box high enough the baby chicks can't jump out with a little bit of food. and just capfuls of water so the mother can show them how to start eating but she'll stay sitting on the chicks and the eggs a couple more days

Two of the other eggs had chicks in them at entirely different stages, but they didn't seem to be moving. They both had a vein network, that seemed fine. What causes baby chicks to die in the egg? Temperature changes that last too long?
First this isn't "my test". It is simply a test. I in no way developed it. Second you may want to visit www.backyardchickens.com and post your question(s) there. This test is widely known and dependable. I'm sure someone over there will be able to assist you more thoroughly than I. I find interpretation of the test results to be the biggest issue. Many causes can contribute to the demise of an embryo. Yes, temperature changes can and will do it among many many other things.

If it sinks it's a dud. If it floats high and bobs around it's a dud/dead. If it floats nose down or up vertically, it's dead or dud. If it floats low (1/4 of shell exposed out of water, egg horizontal) then you should dry it off and put it back, viable chick inside.
We should’ve done that, we had fallen robin egg, we put it into our incubator, (we tried to hatch chicken eggs before) it worked! But the babies died, maybe 8 or 6 days, after maybe 17 days I took them out so maybe a cat or something could have a snack, I didn’t want to waste it, if there’s no birth, no reason to not feed a mother or father cat or other creatures.
does this test work on peafowl eggs? I tried it with my peafowl egg and it sanked all the way towards the bottom, so im hoping ot means it is fertile and still growing but I dont see any veins when I candle my egg
I did that and it floated about 20% i think of the egg surface and I also did candling and i saw that the 20% is the air cell of the egg. The chick is moving inside weakly but I don't know if I should help with the hatching. Is it it ok for the egg to have that large air cell? Its the 23rd day but originally the other eggs was hatched by the aid of the mother hen and I put the other two unhatched eggs in the incubator.

I just used an incubator with 8 eggs and 1 hatched at 20 days, 2 at 21 days. And then one a day till day 25.
Your temp was too low. Adjust slightly up. Very close.

The water can flow through the egg and drown the chick if it is close to hatching

what does this do in regards to the protective bloom of the egg?
It might wash some of it away but this late in the game it won't matter much anyway.
I wouldn't do this test, I'd to the flashlight test. Washing egg can introduce bacteria into the shell and kill the baby chick.

It SHOULD sink. A floating egg is old and probably dead. I'd use a flashlight to look at it in a very dark room
What about an intense light shown on the backside of an egg in a dark room? I saw it on a show. It was for sizing the yolks.

of the liquid if filly red and bloody then it is dead

Wouldn't the air cell cause the egg to float? It wouldn't mean it's a dead egg

BTW use 100F temp water. Same way you check a baby bottle. Just put some on the underside of your wrist until it is barely warm. DO NOT USE COLD WATER
