  • Mayim explores the neurobiology and neuroanatomical differences between gay and straight men while the beloved comedian Leslie Jordan shares his personal struggles with crystal meth and alcoholism. He discusses growing up gay in the south at a time when no one talked about gay rights and he reflects on starting his first serious relationship in his 50s and how sobriety has allowed him access to aspects of his mental health and love life he had never experienced.

Leslie died a few days ago and today I listened to this and cried almost ceaselessly through his portion of the show. He clearly had so many more contributions to pass on to this world in future years that our world will be noticeably poorer with his far-to-arly departure from it. My heart is broken.

I've always looked at sexuality and gender identity the same way I look at being left-handed. I'm left-handed; my brain has wired me that way. I didn't choose to be a lefty it's what I am. No one in their right mind would choose to be something that makes life difficult. People are what they are and can't help but be what they are. I'm no scientist that's just my take on it.

Good one! Btw. In my country in "the good old days" it was not done to be left handed. People learned to write right handed. Something that sounds ridiculous today.
Luckily most people in my country see homosexuality as a given today. Something as odd and normal at the same time, as being left handed.

When we start accepting lies, we stop recognizing the truth. Dedicated sinners live by their own rules, "they become a law unto themselves". God said, "Homosexuals, Adulterers, fornicators, murderers, liars, thieves, blasphemers, gossipers, usurpers, nor idol worshipers will enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (because sin is not OF God, evil is OF Satan). God set down laws, commands, teachings, & judgements, taught man what was allowed & what was forbidden, & WHY, then told man to CHOOSE to whom he would serve; good or evil, right or wrong, God or Satan. It's a CHOICE. It's impossible for God to contradict himself, therefore, it's impossible for God to create humankind into something that he calls an abomination! Is God a liar? OR is man a liar? We are made in the image of God (in thought, word & action). We are to imitate God in the ways he taught us through the Bible. We are to live our lives AS it is in Heaven, not AS it is in Hell. I grew up in Chattanooga and absolutely ADORE Leslie Jordan!! His sisters were counselors at the GS camp I attended (I found out later). This was such an informative, interesting episode! Thank you for exploring this topic deeper. As a heterosexual woman (a child of the 70's and 80's), one of the things I've always wondered was "What does it matter whom I love, when I love? Why must we be so stereotypically male or female? I don't often wear makeup, don't get all girlie (no clue HOW to even put on half of it anymore), but I'm not into man stuff (fixing things, cars, guns). I'm a widow, but don't date because I have no clue how to. I love getting together with friends and sort of see myself as an "Earth Mama": nurturing, accepting, caring.

Sounds like you have a nice life and are pretty comfortable with who you are. I'm a 63-year-old white male have similar experiences, I'm definitely not a "manly man" and not effeminate either. I went back to nursing school in my 50s because I love caring for others but I don't think of myself as a real nurturing person. No children, by choice, and been married just once (I pretty much screwed that up because I didn't know how to express my love and affection for my wife... and I don't blame her at all for the divorce, as a matter of fact I encouraged her to initiate it. I have more women friends than men, mainly because they are usually smarter, more intuitive, and have a better sense of humor than most men I know...but none of my friendships are sexual in nature, just good friends! I'm also a certified yoga teacher and kind of Buddh-ish, I garden to grow my own food, and am a vegan because I love animals and hate cruelty. I like my solitude and my favorite companion is a little Jack Russell rescue dog named Wally, I lead a simple life and just bought a lovely little casita in the mountains of Costa Rica where I plan to retire in less than two years.

How beautiful to be able to support kids like he did, so genuinely, with such empathy and inclusivity. Sounds like you were lucky to have had him as a teacher.
And Myam was lucky to have had him as a father. It speaks VOLUMES that she was able to be a child star and still grow up unscathed by the sick entertainment industry. I mean, I'm sure her path hasn't been perfect or anything, but she's been able to advocate for herself (and others), which is usually something child stars are groomed NOT to be able to do. It really seems like her parents protected her from the creeps, and taught her how to protect herself, allowing herself to truly "Blossom". (I had to. 😁🌼)

Hi Mayim, I'm a Bioengineering major at Stanford with an interest in molecular neuroscience who is heading to graduate school and medical school. Your podcast is absolutely phenomenal. I love the way you 'dejargonize' a lot of the terms and information that intimidate people outside the scientific community and convey content with empathy and compassion. The best example of science communication I've seen in the recent past.

How wonderful to listen and watch this episode. I learned so much. Thank you for your clarity and your expertise together on this podcast. Leslie is one of my favs over the years. I've known so many kids like him over my. 30+ years teaching middle and high school choirs and musical theater. My heart hurts so for them and I've counseled many over the years. I am a conservative Christian and have struggled with the Biblical teachings some along the way. The best thing I've told kids is "God doesn't make junk". "You are wonderful" and "remember if no one tells you I love you". today, remember I do". Life is too precious to waste years fighting against who you are. Again thank you for doing the show!

What a beautiful way to acknowledge human beings who have suffered for centuries. Being Cherokee and gay, this has become an issue as well. Gay people long ago in the Cherokee tribe and many others were considered two spirited and a blessing to the tribe. They were councilors and sought-after for spiritual advice and now because of other influences we are now pushed aside and considered an abomination; however, there are those in the tribe who still consider us a blessing and that is awesome.

I quite honestly don’t know where to begin. There is just so much about this topic that I would love to discuss with you. Thank you. Thank you. I am 54, gay, a recovering alcoholic, a recovering Catholic, clinically depressed (possibly unipolar), medicated, and have been with my partner for 31 years. I was an alcoholic by 22 trying desperately to forget I was gay. I stopped drinking and got into therapy (for about 25 years). So many people think that if you stop drinking the problem is solved. That is so untrue. The drinking is the symptom, not the underlying issue. I have never found my way back to organized religion but am constantly trying to help, others and be my best me. I used to think about killing myself every day for decades until my partner got me to finally ask for medication. It was a hard struggle to,find the right one, but I made it. You mentioned that many think a pill is a cure all. It is not. It is a tool to use to help (as you said) bridge the gap. It is a tool just like the tools learned in therapy and the tools you use in the garden. People need to know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of strength demonstrating that you have the courage to obtain the tools necessary to fight your way out of that dark lonely place and be the amazing, beautiful incredible gift that each and every one of us is in the world. Sorry for going on and on, but this is something about which I feel so passionately about that any chance I get I want to shout it from the rooftops. Anyway, I’m done. BTW, I saw the first episode of your new show and can’t wait until it becomes more about your character and less a repeat of Miranda (which I love). You and Miranda Hart are two completely different actresses and, in my humble opinion, you shine most in this show in all of the scenes that were not directly pulled from Miranda. I wish you so much luck with your show and Breakdown. You are truly a gift to the world in all your incarnations.

One of the last times I went to church (also a Baptist church) was when our pastor spoke in his sermon about how God hated all of the homosexuals in New Orleans and that's why he sent Hurricane Katrina there to kill them off. I remember being horrified that he would say such a thing, and even more horrified that so many in the congregation were nodding in agreement. I was raised to believe that we were all created in his image, and to my logic that meant that hating anyone for any reason was to, in turn, hate God. One of the greatest gifts he gave us is the ability to love and it comes with no qualifiers, no exclusions, no restrictions. As Mr. Jordan said, I am currently seeking faith and am finding it in all things from the love we all share on this planet to our remarkable ability to feel and show compassion for those around us. This was a wonderful episode and I hope that anyone watching it does so with an open heart to better understand that though our journeys in life are different we are all united by the fact that we are all moving forward, seeking and exploring and experiencing this world together.

(like Duhhhhh) i looked at my husband and said "and THAT is why i don't want him going to a church". i like to think if we just get all the "noise" of it out of the way, we will innately understand all we need to.

Then, you should pay more attention to what God says about the brain. Grew up in a very, very conservative area of the South. My family had actually founded the local baptist church generations ago. The only gay person I had as a role model was this older gentleman who was from a very prominent local family who when they found out he was gay sent him off to the local mental hospital for shock therapy. Then they kinda warehoused him off in a little house way off the beaten path, if you ever ran into him it was obvious his brain was completely fried. So growing up thinking I might be gay I was terrified that this was what I was facing. Played sports, had a girlfriend, did everything I could not to be that. When I went off t college and kinda got out in the world I just couldn't deny it anymore. But it did get me disowned and I had to leave home and school. Found out much later there were several gay people in my high school, all terrified of being found out, like the quarterback in the year ahead of me. I did go through a short "born again" phase thinking my problems were that i just wasn't praying hard enough or my faith was deep enough. The problem though isn't religion so much though as the culture of religion, especially in the south. the problem with homosexuality is cultural, just using weak religious arguments to justify that homophobia. I'm very CIS though, which often seems to really scare people more. They're ok with a gay person if they're very effeminate since it makes it easier for some people to dismiss them as "sissies" but a masci;ome gay person that seems "normal" makes them uncomfortable. All that heteronormative classification stuff is BS now anyhow. I remember once as a kid trying on my mom's dress and shoes and looking in the mirror thinking "mmm, I don't think so" but I"m probably lucky my mom wasn't more of a snazzy dresser, I don't think any gay kid has tried on a pair of sensible shoes and a frumpy farmer's wife outfit and thought "mmmm, yeah, that's who I want to be."

My brother was teased mercilessly for being gay when we were kids in the 80's. He was just a kid and thought nothing was wrong with liking Barbies, playing dress up and tea party. My parents let us play however we liked. I used to stand between him and bullies in elementary school. My brother learned what gay was when he was teased and thought it was a bad thing. He spent his life up into his mid twenties thinking this. He came out to himself in his early 20s and to the rest of us in his late 20s. I love my brother and just feel so bad for what he went through. When my kid came out to me they still faced bullying but came out when they were 12 and knew they would be accepted.

IT'S A CHOICE.

4:50 is so amazing.. he is 1000% right you can't have an open conversation any more. People have their belief and everything else is wrong... I love this ep and am super happy to have found this channel.

I love how your education about the brain informs your opinion on homosexuality and then how you pass that information to all of us. Thank you!

IT'S A CHOICE. There is STILL no PROOF that man is born into homosexuality.

I had the immense good fortune to work with Leslie Jordan through North Carolina Pride and Human Rights Campaign back in 2009/2010. He was exactly what he portrayed in this interview, charming, lightning-fast wit, gracious, and unbelievably kind. News of his passing was shocking and so sad, and watching this interview was just beyond uplifting. I can only imagine how much this had to hurt Mayim and Jonathan since he passed so soon after this podcast went online. Much love to you all, and fly free with that sparkling baton, dear Leslie.

Leslie Jordan makes me feel like its ok to be me. I too, haven't really had any serious relationships. Mainly because I really just don't care, I'm not lonely either, I'm perfectly content just being by myself. Sometimes lonely? Yeah? Lonely enough to have to put up with another person forever? Nah. Do I feel the compelling need to help fix everyone else, but not myself. You betcha. I have mental health issues, and that's ok.

This episode made me cry so many times, I lost count. What moved me most was how Mr.Jordan spoke with gentleness and eloquent reverence about his family. I got the sense that they're now a source of great comfort for him, and there's been a lot of forgiveness all 'round.
This was an hour well spent, and I learned valuable lessons. Thanks, everyone. 💜
