Why you are wrong about watch brand ambassadors

    For your awareness some things about me and the channel.
    I'm an engineer who's into human behavior, loves the ideas behind art and sees watches as a mix of science, craft, art, business, history, technology, philosophy, and psychology. As a result, my videos cover all that ground. (Oh, and I overthink everything).
    In my opinion a $15 Casio or a $50 G-Shock are probably the only real tool watches and pretty much everything else is jewelry. So as we are talking about jewelry I think style is substance and I tend to believe history, brand, style, design, execution, and aesthetics are more important than specs. A dull design with a good movement is a dull watch, and an exciting design with an average movement is an exciting watch.
    To be clear, I hate the expression "it's just a watch". If you got this far, watches matter to you and represent a bridge between us - dismissing them as unimportant seems wrong and disrespectful. That doesn't mean we can't and don't have fun, it just means we should not be totally mindless of others.
    I'm a watch collector and curator - I like my collections to have a theme. My collection has several themes:
    1. Vintage Alpina watches
    2. Travel watches (GMT. UTC, world timers, home times, dual times)
    3. Seiko Prospex dive watches
    4. Breitling chronographs
    5. Stuff I just really like.
    I don't do wrist checks so if you want to see what I'm wearing, my collection, and other random bits of my life check out my Instagram:
    @not.so.obvious.watches / not.so.obvious.watches
    You can email me at not.so.obvious.watches@gmail.com
    virtually all the music you'll hear on my channel I get from BenSound - www.bensound.com/
    also, my stock images and videos tend to come from either snappa (snappa.com/app) or pexels (www.pexels.com/)

    An important effect of advertising is to validate the purchase you've already made. It can increase satisfaction with your purchase and build brand loyalty, thereby increasing the chance you purchase the brand again.

    Caspita! There is so much here to talk about here, I don't even know how to respond. May I ask where you got all the diagrams at the beginning please? I didn't see any accreditation on screen, unless I missed it. This is like if Rob Ager analyzed watches 🤣🤣🤣 "celebrities are not real people, they are avatars, little containers our ideas about people". Very interesting, thank you for sharing.

      Sorry, I'll try and track down where those diagrams come from but to be frank given the size of my channel and that this is a hobby not a job I tend to be a bit lazy when it comes to that sort of stuff - I generally do the research in moments of free time, jot notes, turn it into something that mostly flows, present to camera and then go looking for supporting images during the editting process (that I hate and try and get through as quickly as possible). If I can find something I'll post an update.
      oh - and thanks for the kind words.

      @@PeteMcConvill I totally understand, I just find this stuff fascinating and it left me wanting to really study those diagrams more. I am exactly the same btw, I do UA-cam videos too, started as a hobby in my free time, donkey years ago, painfully rudimentary stuff back then, now it became a part time gig, as much as it pains me to say. Hopefully not so embarrassingly simple as I was now. But nowhere near as good as the way you communicate, I still find it hard work. But this video is far more interesting and thoughtful than the endless speculative boiler room watch talk by those that have never produced a watch from start to finish, and I refuse to read/listen or even strain my eyes in the general direction of the so called watch "publications". It''s all just advertising now, either a front for a watch store, or directly from a brands paying for articles. All corporate BS and lies. Thankfully, there are a handful of channels, mainly non-english language interestingly (thank you caption translator), but others like yours too, for those with half a brain left. I may not be the sharpest out there, and god knows I despise the photography/editing part too, so I totally get it., But I do love watches and it is clear you do to, so stay free and keep up the good work. KBO!
      Best regards,
      TGV
      P.s. If this reply is illegible, forgive me, I battle a with dyslexic mind too, it seems to makes sense as I type this... 😅😅

      1. I was well aware you do youtube too - its always nice when a big fish swims into my little pond.
      2. Like you I've found the non-english speaking channel a lot more interesting - I wonder if:
      a. not as much money gets thrown at them by brands/advertisers so it a little more authentic
      b. along the same lines, the audiences are smaller no matter how big you get so there's less incentive to chase the algorythmn along with the rest of the herd.

    I avoid advertising to such an extent that the only two specific watches I can remember a celebrity wearing in recent times are Brad Pitt with the VC 222 (I can't afford it) and Lewis Hamilton with the IWC AMG-Petronas Pilot's watch, which I do like, but hasn't made it to the 'must buy' list at this point.

    • @PeteMcConvill
      @PeteMcConvill  5 місяців тому +3

      doesnt matter if you remember it or not - 90% of this is operating at the subconcious level. That said if you are truly and actively managing your media exposure you might be really avoiding this but thats a) extreme and b) shockingly unusual and remember - its not always about you.

      @@PeteMcConvill Yes, of course, I've been avoiding ads since the days before remote controls, when I had to get off the couch to turn the sound down when the ads came on :) I know that's not how most people do things. Apart from UA-cam, I'm mostly a reader.

    I’m obviously not a normal human! Celebs don’t have a positive influence on my views of any brand. What defines Tiger Woods? Marital infidelity, smashed car windows, car crashes, a bad back, and I’ve been told he used to be quite good at hitting a small white ball with a golf bat (the same one responsible for the smashed car windows?). Ah, now I see why it doesn’t work on me! 😆😂🤣

  • @markwheeler4417
    @markwheeler4417 5 місяців тому +1

    The science behind marketing is quite frightening. That's why successful marketing is so powerful. It's a way to subvert the "lizard brain" to influence the "monkey brain" that is part of everyone's cognitive process at some level. Kahneman's "Thinking, fast and slow" is a great book to read if you want to understand your decision making but it's only part of the story. Unlike much of social science the psychological work that underpins much of this video is repeatable and statistically significant. It doesn't matter whether or not you or I are influenced by celebrity endorsements or not. The brands have the science and, by now, the sales data to show that it works.

    Nice in depth vid Pete. People are complicated , ad people know this as is the thought process. Ambassadors matters not to me and never will. I pay no mind to it. Watches are tools to me. Pure and simple. I do not relate the watch to anything or anyone.

    This so called ambassadors are simply well paid, well known people who just plays in commercials.
    I don't think there is anything wrong with it but this is why very well made watch we would pay let's say 2K we will need to spend 5K
    I have many watches that are in. my opinion well made but I didn't loose fortune on any of them and most of those brands are very little known to masses.
    Alpina is very good example how very known good quality watch is not as expensive as Oris which is spending a lots of money on advertisement and someone will need to eat the bill.
    I stiłl like Oris but the budget isn't there anymore...

    It would be interesting to apply this decision making/conversion journey to your earlier idea about watch features you like, but never buy.
    What would it take to get someone who already likes a watch, or design/feature- and increase the likelihood of converting that interest to an actual purchase?

    My most recent purchase was a Breitling and I do think I was a little influenced by the fact that it is endorsed by Charlize Theron (who I'm deeply in love with!) and Brad Pitt and Adam Driver (both of whom I'm more than happy to watch in a movie.). better again was their use of the Roció Gonzales - the Spanish woman fighter pilot and others. I think your endorsement also influenced me! As did the various interviews with their designer on A blog to Watch podcast. It is also one of the first watch brands I remember seeing in the window of a shop.
