    A lot of people miss: Adrian actually chuckles at Rocky's "shell shock" joke. This, plus her quiet, awkward, yet confident, "Goodnight, Rocky" and glance.. speak volumes about her hidden feelings for Rocky. Talia Shire was amazing in this movie.

    Paulie does do one good thing at the end. When Adrian wants to get in the ring to hug Rocky and tell him she loves him Paulie distracts the officials and lifts the ring ropes so she can get through. It’s not much but for Paulie that’s a grand gesture.

    • @jessecortez9449
      @jessecortez9449 4 місяці тому +25

      I remember reading years ago that Gazzo was originally going to be a half brother to Rocky in the earlier drafts of the script. A "brother from a different mother" situation. They grew up together becoming rather streetwise with Gazzo hustling for money and Rocky just being intimidated. They had to trim off the backstory since the budget was so tight. I don't know how in depth they wanted to take that backstory but it would have been nice to have since Gazzo is so cool with Rock it is almost familial beyond the whole Italian loyalty.
      A similar trimming of backstory happened with Paulie being a combat veteran thus explaining why he drinks and is so bitter. They had Burt Young's real life Marine Corps enlistment photo in the living room since he was actually in the Marines and even picked up boxing there.

      Gazzo reminds me a lot of the Danny Aiello character in "The Professional." Tony's absolutely a gangster, and definitely a bad guy off-camera, but in the few scenes we get with him we get some subtle cues that he really does have a heart too.

    • @therewasacrookedman5892
      @therewasacrookedman5892 4 місяці тому +8

      I like to think that Mickey's "cheap second rate loan shark" is an apt description for Gazzo; not in a bad way, but because Gazzo is a bit softhearted.
      Him having a big heart for Rocky makes me think he cares about other people too much to have a bigger slice of the game. The $500 he gives Rocky is probably more because he likes Rocky and genuinely wants to see Rocky do good.

I'm sure I speak for a lot of subscribers when I say that your outros are just a big a part as your reaction, and greatly appreciated. As to your query when Micky told Rocky that "women weaken legs": It was a common conception that anyone that was involved heavily in sports (especially back then, and perhaps still) needed to refrain from being amorous with their ladies while training because it was thought that "bedroom activities" would literally take a toll on the guy. Stamina-wise, desire-wise. You were supposed to be focused on one thing and one thing only. I can't wait for your continued journey through this series. 😊

    Fun facts: Stallone's brother Frank was the street singer.
    -Sylvester owns both the dog and the turtles... They're HUGE, the turtles I mean.
    -Burgess Meredith (Micky) had to be made to look older because this was only 10 years after his run as the Penguin in the TV Batman series and he looked to young.
    -The bit about Rocky's poster was real. Because it was a 40 foot tall hand painted poster they couldn't change it to fit the continuity so added this scene to explain the error.
    -The soulful scene with Rocky and Adrian on the bed before the night of the fight had to be done in one take due to lack of film, the wouldn't have been able to do it over.
    Also...
    The fight scenes had to be shot in reverse order because the effects people found it easier to remove the makeup than it was to add.
    So they started with the last round, where Rocky and Apollo are all busted up was the first scene shot and the opening round, where they're all clean and beautiful was the last scene shot.

    Everyone is broken, but the spark of Rocky never giving up, his chance becomes everyone’s chance, and even though he loses, everyone wins. I think this movie invented the sports montage. Technically, yes, a sports movie. But really a film about perseverance and heart.

    burgess meredith was playing old-man characters by the early 1950s, but kept acting until the early 90s. some of his best work is in a couple of the old twilight zone episodes. the actor who played gazzo was also in "taxi driver", which was from the same year as rocky, and was one of the closest races for best picture (taxi driver vs. rocky). im surprised your research and outro didnt mention the chuck wepner connections, the resulting lawsuit, the eventual settlement etc. the 2017 film "chuck" shares the story of the "real rocky balboa". wepner was not an unknown but he was the highest ranked white boxer in the mid 70s, and, as a publicity stunt, muhammed ali gave him a title shot on those grounds. wepner worked as a collector for the mob, knocked ali down once in the fight, and lasted until the 15th round ( but not all the way through the 15th). stallone obviously lifted several ideas from the fight ali vs. wepner (1975), and this was how he wrote the script so quickly. all he wrote was basically "what if wepner was a nice man, and fell in love with a nice girl, his story could be an inspiration". also since you were surprised by the unusual name "butkus", stallone named him after the football player "dick butkus". (which has to be one of the best sports names of all-time.

    Great reaction, Whimsory. This one was before my time, but it's one of my favs, especially after I learned about some of the backstory behind the making of the movie. The thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown, but he wrote the script, and somehow not just convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play the title role in the movie. Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
    Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage'-with-the-music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage with short intercutting scenes in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout-with-music-montage.

      Rocky’s character is based largely on Frazier, who was also from Philadelphia, also known for working the body, also known for taking punches in order to get in close range, etc, etc., except rocky is light skinned whereas Frazier wasn’t. But the final fight scenes were inspired when some guy named Chuck Wepner almost made it to the final bell in his match against Muhammad Ali.

    • @rayhunter-o3w
      @rayhunter-o3w 4 місяці тому

      @meminustherandomgooglenumbers I doubt this, since other sources claim he was down and out, watched the Ali vs. Wepner fight on TV, got inspired, wrote the script in 3 days, then sold it to a movie studio for $35,000 on the condition that he star in it. Frazier lent a sense of authenticity to the project with his cameo, but I've never heard that he contributed any more than that.

    Unlike a lot of "serieses" Rocky is truly one long story told over the several movies. they really all relate to one another and just continue to tell Rocky's story. Seeing the growth of Rocky/Adrian relationship is worth watching them all

    I really like the way you take time to do research and rewatch the film before coming back to do an outro on your reaction. It's nice to see Joe Frazier get some respect from someone like you who isn't anywhere near old enough to know about him they way those of us who were around when this movie was made do. My take on Mickey has always been that he wasn't really trying to profit off of Rocky's good fortune, he just wanted to be a part of it. His story is in some ways similar to Rocky's - he's been in boxing his whole life and while he eventually managed to get his own gym he was never part of the high class, big time part of the sport. He really wants to be part of a big fight. And he does care about Rocky - if he didn't, he wouldn't be so disappointed in him for becoming a leg breaker for Gazzo.

    18:26 Back in the day drinking raw eggs is what lots of athletes did. I remember when my brother was in high school back in the early 80's him and his friends would all drink raw eggs before football practice. They thought drinking them raw makes you absorb the protein easier and faster.

    You are a pleasure listening to! I love your format that you have created. Excellent job at the end of your reaction in terms of breaking down certain scenes and characters to understand what's really going on. I've watched a lot of reactors and no one does it as well as you do. You've done your research, which is so essential, especially on the actors and the production of the movie. Certainly watch all of the Rocky sequels, best movie series ever. I would highly suggest reacting to Rain Man, Scarface, Goodfellas, The Godfather, and Born on the Fourth of July with Tom Cruise. All academy award winners. Can't wait for your next one. Keep up the great work!!!

    Great Reaction...... Some of these might have already been mentioned.......
    The "Rocky" Movies are movies about Relationships and Personal Growth, with a little Boxing thrown in......
    Actually Butkis was his dog, he had sold the dog before the movie and bought it back when he got the movie deal.......
    The scene where Rocky points out the shorts are the wrong color, was added cause the printer messed up the poster/prop and they didn't have enough money left in the budget to correct it, Same thing with Rocky's robe being the wrong size..... So they wrote in dialogue to address it.....
    The Creed Movies happen after the Rocky Movies, the Creed Character is Apollo's Son......

    Great breakdown in your outro, I think the relationship between Paulie and Adrian is very complicated. Even though they are brother and sister they are almost like an old married couple (he is the primary bread winner, she cooks, cleans and does his laundry) because even though their parents are not mentioned I get the feeling that they have been living together and supporting each other for a long time, it feels like their parents have been gone for awhile. And unfortunately with his drinking Paulie is very dependent on Adrian to take care of him but he is too proud to admit that and instead puts her down every time he can because deep inside he is afraid to loose her because it will force him to take care of himself for once.
