- In this video I go over what lights I use to flounder gig and what has worked for me. I show my new Milwaukee M18 powered cordless light and give some info on my design. The PVC is 1" in diameter.

I grew up gigging flounder in Alabama with the original "cordless" flounder gigging light, a Coleman lantern with a dish reflector! ;-) Coleman lantern in one hand, gig in the other, with rope around my waist to tow my jon boat. Great memories.

Hello Fixin and Fishin, I have been building cordless gig lights for about 20 years, an gigging for around 40 years. I'm using a 3/4 inch diameter led that is totally waterproof powered by 8 double A batteries output is 3000 lumen run time about 6 hours. all of my on/off switches are waterproof. total weight less 3 lbs. It is really state of the art and my design. I am almost 70 still gig but a little slower now. I will be more than glad to share my design with you and the way I gig with a single 1/2 inch aluminum rod. No one else has this design. I don't know how to contact you or you me other than your site here. I understand flounder lights not computers. Anyway if you can figure out how we can communicate let me know. Absolutely! They run a long time on these batteries too. One 6ah off brand m18 battery is good for me for the night. I just recently found that out after going a couple times.

I added silicone around the back of the light where the wire goes on. I have done the front before as well. It sure won’t hurt anything to make them just a little more waterproof. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for making this video. My girlfriend and I just moved down to Houston and she wants to get into gigging and so here I am lol. After using the new set up a few times do you have anything you wish you would have done differently? Any advice on how to attach the sling?
Thank for the comment Josh! It has been awesome with my experiences so far. The lights last a long time! It takes one battery for me all night. That’s the 6ah battery that I was using. The difference is unreal vs the cordless and the corded. Something I might change, I might make a new one with a length that I don’t have to bend my arm and I can hold it straight out. Some places I find my self reaching in front of me so I like that extra length in some areas. I have taken it a half a dozen times or so and I have not put a strap on it yet. If I do in the future I would probably tie one below the battery on the pvc and then tape it in place.
If i get to make one, i hope i do, im going to use a T for the light so i can use it like a cane....
I have helth issues with my back and legs.
Now that you have used this new version several times, how long will the battery old up thru the night?
As, what voltage and make was your battery?

I didn't realize that an 18v battery would power 12v lights. Did you hook this up directly to the lights? How bright are the lights compared to running them off a 12v battery? I'm going to make one using a 20v dewalt battery.
The lights have a 10-30volt working range. They do fine on 12 volt batteries and there is no difference that I notice on 18V batteries. That should work fine!
Does the 18v battery not hurt the 12v light?
Does the m18 not burn up a 12v light?

Anything gets heavier as you carry it over time it seems. This just eliminates wires and the use of a backpack for the battery. The M18 5AH batteries aren’t really that heavy. I think the compromise between the corded lights and one with a battery directly on the lights is worth it for my application.

Pull the wire ends out the short / bottom end splice and pull back in 😉
What’s your favorite style gig ?
For walking, straight rod with sharpened tip with stringer on one end going to a float. Going out the boat, a 4 prong gig with barbs. It’s a homemade stainless steel one.

I’m not understanding how you wired the adapter to the switch then to the light. It’s super hard to see on the video.
From what I can see… the red wire from the light connect to the red wire of the adapter, then the black wire from the adapter goes to one side of the switch and the black wire from the light goes to the other side of the switch to complete the circuit. Is that correct?
How long did that milwaukee last for ?
One battery would have lasted probably 4 hours non stop from what I have experienced so far. That is with a 6AH battery.
