While all of the actresses brought their own unique take to Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer is the most iconic for me. She brings a certain vulnerability to Selina, and is excellent at portraying her confidence following her transformation too. 😻
YES! I love Michelle Pfeiffer and anne Hathaway's take on cat woman. Michelle... iconic Anne....amazing They gave the character Catwoman such depth and personality and made her more than just some hot woman in leather.
Fun fact- Eartha Kit was Catwoman for only 16 minutes during the one season she had the role yet maintains one of the most iconic iterations in history 👏
I tend to score Eartha as the #1 Catwoman, her immersion into the role made it the perfect balance of threat, intelligence and ability that this villain required. No rocks being tossed at Pfeiffer or Hathaway but neither one of them had their threat level up to par when it comes to facing Batman.
@@Inkpinkierosie I think in the 60s the shows were short and sweet. She made appearances everytime the role called for it. She was cast for only the last season of the show. They couldn't offer her anymore screentime as she was only one of many 'villains' that had to fit the roster.
One detail I really like about Pfeiffer's catwoman that I don't really see mentioned often is how the stitching on her chest looks like an autopsy scar.
While your criticism about how Batman and Catwoman's chemistry in The Batman (2022) fell flat is totally accurate and fair, I think that was the point. Before seeing it, I was expecting a passionate sexual whirlwind romance. After seeing it, I understand that everyone in this new version of Gotham is only just getting started. That being said, if/when Bruce and Selina meet eachother again, I imagine there will be much more romantic/sexual tension at play because now, they have a history.
@@meko98743 yup the Bale Batman was already a fleshed out character both in and out of the costume. The Pattinson Batman is kinda an egdy recluse that's just starting to see how he's supposed to be as Batman or Bruce.
when i first heard that Anne Hathaway is going to play Selina i was kinda sad, cos at the time Anne held this "romantic-comedy" range, and i was not sure if this kind of actress could play such iconic femme-fatale character BUT when i saw the movie i became literally obsessed with Anne as Selina and after all these years I still am
Michelle as Selina/Catwoman >>>>> Halle was done so dirty because if the movie was good, she would make a fantastic comic accurate Selina imo. (I was 9 when the movie came out and was obsessed with it anyway).
Same. Me growing up as a black latina from the 3rd world i was so amaze when I saw this beautiful black woman and that was a hero/villain but was so cool. I just love the entire movie and every scene but people there hate it.
Michelle Pfeiffer. She embraces the role better than all put together. She wanted that role more than anything. She said she would have done it for free. I can't believe how no other actresses haven't nailed that fantastic character. They all fall short and lack the over all feel.
The relationship between Batman/Catwoman 2022 made sense to me. They're both deeply traumatized, lonely people and the movie makes it clear the effect it has on their interactions with others. They're surviving on autopilot fueled by a rage that's emotionally, socially stunted them. So naturally their relationship wouldn't be a "healthy" "romantic" one full of deep chemistry and whitty banter but the healthier version of an unhealthy thing because it's all they're currently capable of emotionally.
I doesnt make sense to me. Just because they are traumatized or something doesnt mean they have chemistry on each other and would make them be attracted to each other. Especially that Batman isnt lonely but only socially awkward and Catwoman is the only lonely character makes the romance more unnatural. To me Catwoman is only trying to manipulate Batman to help her by her sex appeal and is not really attracted to him, but if they do plan to make a sequel to the film and they would include Catwoman again i hope they would actually put a reasonable reason on why she really is attracted to Batman.
I was surprised at how much I loved Zoe's Catwoman. I'm a HUGE Batman fan and its always disappointed me to see Catwoman delegated to the sidelines or to merely the role of the romantic interest. She's a very iconic, essential part of the Batman mythos. I think she was given a lot of respect and agency in the new Batman movie and Zoe did a great job at capturing the troubled side of the character and her nuances. (michelle will probably always be my personal favorite, tho)
EXACTLY!! Zoë's version is the most comic accurate out of all of them. Anyone who has read Catwoman's comics would appreciate this version. Zoë's performance was amazing. Matt Reeves really did the character justice. 👏
@@luigilove254 so true. Reeves clearly cared about the characters and was familiar with who she is in the comics. Props to Zoe too for a great portrayal of Selina
Yeah. Zoë Kravitz is the most comic-accurate Catwoman and most perfectly suits the movie's overarching theme of vengeance. Michelle Pfeiffer is the Catwoman who most iconically defines the role and fits into her movie's style most perfectly. Eartha Kitt is the Catwoman who most perfectly embodies a woman with a cat-like personality and style.
"Women are like cats, so we drew her as a cat. Men are like dogs, so we drew men as a bat, penguin, robin, playing card come to life, and politician with multiple personality disorder. Obviously."
I havent even seen Batman returns and Michelle Pfeifer is still my fav. Lol. Her meow and her mannerisms are too iconic even in a trailer or a reel.. Anne Hathaway would be 2 for me too.. she was wonderful as Catwoman.
man, old timey Batman writers' views of woman made me roll my eyes so hard. "Woman are like cats because they're mysterious and aloof, unlike men who are like friendly dogs". Sure buddy, whatever.
yeah, i've never really understood why so many apparently heterosexual men like to spend so much time with other men talking about women in a clueless manner instead of talkling to women.
Anne Hathaway is probably the best dressed Catwoman. Apart from her catsuit, the outfit she wears to the Airport really captures Selina Kyle's elegance from the comics. But personally, I think Michelle Pfeiffer reigns supreme. Her performance is so fin, since it combines the darker elements of the comic book character with the fun campy stuff from the 60s show.
I love the airport outfit and the way she walks and acts wealthy in it even though we know that she’s secretly dirt poor. The police are looking for Selina Kyle, a poor criminal trying to escape from the airport. Therefore she tries to make it appear that she’s a pampered lady in expensive clothing, even though she just came from her run-down apartment in the rough part of the city. The grifter/con artist aspect of the character is best explored in The Dark Knight Rises. They ignored this part of Catwoman in Batman Returns. They somewhat attempted it in The Batman by regrettably putting Zoe Kravitz in colorful Party City wigs in a club setting where she doesn’t even need to be disguised.
while I hated that they kept calling Selina’s girlfriend her “friend”, I disagree about removing the romance. actually, I was very impressed by Robert’s acting in the first moment he sees Selina in the club - tho he plays it off as her being useful to his investigation, I found his look at her was clearly one of lust, and interest. he is always unsettled by her. and it shows to me that Bruce is young, and that he craves human contact and being able to just be with someone he likes. it also makes his choice to stay at the end more powerful, because he clearly *wants* Selina, but not enough to abandon his vision for Gotham
I was so disappointed and confused when I watched it. My sister asked me several times if she was her girlfriend or not and I couldn't answer until it was clearly stated. I felt a bit queerbaited lol
They were never romantically involved, they're really just friends. Even the director said Catwoman has a sort of mother-daughter protective relationship with her. I'm in a friend group where we all call each other "Baby, bb, b" and I honestly thought this was pretty common. We'd crack up if people thought that we were lesbians over that lol
I mean, I call my friends ‘baby.’ It’s not just for romantic use. And throughout the movie, I always felt that it was a mother/ daughter type friendship. But this is just my opinion.
I was one of those (Idk how many lol) that found the casting of Zoe as Catwoman totally perfect both physically and "vibe" wise since she's so feline-like. Her stature (I think Michelle and Anne were a bit too tall for the role) way of moving, her eyes and face are very similar to a cat.
@@Emietmolaisa2012 When I think of a cat or something catlike it's usually something small. A smaller stature also makes the movement look more fluid and precise because the limbs are shorter.
Disagree. Cat woman is supposed to be long and slender, like a cat. I thought Zoe was perfect face wise but too short. It was like kitten woman not cat woman
Halle Berry's cat woman has a special place in my childhood. As a little black girl seeing a black woman in a role that was seen as powerful and sexy while being the main character resonated with me.
I'm not black, but Halle Berry's Catwoman still has a special place in my heart for fairly similar reasons, because she got a super-powered/animalistic/heroic/lead-character storyline typically given to male characters-and I think she was actually my personal introduction to the Catwoman character in general as a young early-teens-aged girl too. I became obsessed with seeing just about every other iteration of the character I could get my hands on after that, but Halle Berry's version is still first in my heart. (I also _really_ don't understand, personally, the current modern take like being sexual and being objectified are inherently the same issue. You can absolutely be sexy &/or sexual without merely being objectified. ..But maybe that's just me.)
@@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 I agree, she was also my first live action introduction to cat woman and I really liked that she had supernatural animalistic powers. With the sexy=objectification thing i think part of the issue is that when writers (especially male writers) create a sexy female character she's often only allowed to be sexy and is deprived of depth and complexity which seems to make it easier for the audience to only see her as a sex symbol
@@KIJO2696 As a little kid I pretty much used to only read or watch stories IF there were animals in them, because I'm an avid animal lover and I just found animals way more interesting to me than human-people, but stories where the animal characters were anthropomorphized a bit or where the human people were a little bit animalistic[ like Halle Berry's Catwoman] really helped me gradually start to realize and come to appreciate a lot more as I grew up that human beings could be interesting too. (And it was so rare to see that kind of a character not be a guy! Outside of books, I think it's still more rare than it should be, honestly.) Lol She was powerful, she was beautiful, and she started off basically as a nobody who just finds her way to really come into her own and become an individual somebody(with a little supernatural help - kind of as if the supernatural or whatever saw what was already special in her even when everyone else overlooked or underestimated it) and she learns to stick up for herself and fight to get justice like she deserves when people wrong her in ways that shouldn't happen; I really loved it. True enough about the sexy=objectification thing, though-I suppose it often can/does. I guess I was just trying to say, I think sometimes it feels like people think of it as somehow making a character automatically less 3-dimensional JUST because they ARE sexy/sexual[ or such] even when that character isn't actually all that flat or shallow or 2-dimensional of a character or whatever overall, and I just personally find that kinda sad...like, you should be allowed to be a sexy/sexual/ person or character AND _STILL_ be seen as also being a deep or complex or layered character at the same time too. (If that makes sense?) Like, I don't really remember feeling personally as if "sexy" was literally *ALL* there was to Halle Berry's Catwoman myself, even though she was also obviously very very sexy too[ and looking back on it now in some of those clips shown in this video especially perhaps it was accentuated unnecessarily much sometimes] .. but maybe that was just me?? (idk) 😅🤔🤷♀️ Lol ((I mean, perhaps it helped me a lot that I didn't really entirely care yet if people were sexy or not, so I kinda just mostly ignored that aspect anyhow .. so maybe I just only saw everything else about the story & character instead without even really thinking about how sexy it was or wasn't whatsoever, myself, until later on.😹 .. I dunno. 😁 🤣🤣)) It's been too long since I last rewatched it, I should really give it a more recent rewatch soon! ^-^ 😊
I was SO worried you were going to downplay Anne Hathaways performance as Catwoman. People hate on Anne Hathaway for essentially no reason, but I’m so glad you saw how absolutely great her performance was
Hmmm looking at the movies that came out in 2012, I bet that movie got overshadowed thanks to Avengers coming out that same year. I also checked the release dates and Avengers came out a couple months before The Dark Knight Rises.
There are also subtle nuances to Anne's performance that most will not pick up on during the first viewing of TDKR. Anne goes through a wide range of emotions in a short amount of screen time.
@@turtleislandlac1490 no argue , Ann is GOOD but to me THE BEST cat woman was Michelle, her combination of streangth and vulnerability. sexy and innocent sanity and insanity she capture cat woman duality perfectly.
They all were good, but Michelle Pfeiffer‘s/ Tim Burton‘s take on the character is ICONIC! The costume design, the performance, …. Everything about that version is unbelievably good.
I feel like if we get more Zoe Kravitz in the Batman movies, then she has the potential to be the best Catwoman ever. I'm so excited to see more of this story
@@sonorasgirl Right! Some people based chemistry more off the writing than the actual characters/actors, which is not fair. It was written to be awkward, but anyone with common sense could see how well Robert played the lust in his eyes when he was around Zoe. It's a slow burn. Same thing with Bridgerton 2, many karens thought the couple didn't have chemistry but the plot was an enemies to lovers narrative that was written.
I really think Zoe's cat woman could have been improved on, BUT I actually liked her weird relationship with Batman. This is a woman who is probably a survivor of sexual trauma on top of the other traumas in her life. This could have a drastic influence on her as a person and affect all of relationships greatly. I would LOVE to see her come back after better figuring herself out. And getting a new mask because...yikes.
I don't understand why people are surprised that someone lonely, abused, and cynical would decide seduction is an easy way to solve social awkwardness. It automatically gives you a script to work with, and a goal to aim towards. Especially if you really want to get a reaction out of someone. Or just to figure out where everyone's boundaries are. You go with the options you know, not the ones other people wish you knew.
if there is a sequel to the Batman, I hope they give Zoe's cat women the iconic whip and a new outfit to show how she's evolved while she was away from Gotham, it also gives opportunity to work on the chemistry and make her more as a foe to batman.( also you could you please do a video on the Disney Descendants fashion I'd really like to see your opinion on it.)
@@marlonclark1896 yeah like in this movie Catwoman doesn't have a proper whip but instead a bike chain.... and that's on purpose. To show some development when she comes back. Same with the mask.
Camren Bicondova is one of my favorites, I thought she had a great presence and attitude. But I think she was pre-emptively hampered by the frustrating idea of being a middle-school age version of the character. Some characters childhoods are best left unexplored; it can be hard to watch the world break them down, or if the writer coddles them as kids you don't buy they become the adult we know. Points for the actress Doing amazing (especially for a kid), but she'd always be at a disadvantage.
Michelle Pfieffer is the obvious most interesting one. With the most original and striking costume. I like every choice and outfit from that movie. Her voice, her transformation, I like her as Selina pre and post resurrection and the chemistry was believable Halle deserved better, I hated the brasierre with ripped up pants look and the headpiece. Her initial Catwoman outfit with the domino mask and tight leather body covering outfit looked great, changing it to that mess was a downgrade and Patience Phillips being TOO catlike was a weird choice with her eating catfood out of a tin, licking herself, eyeing fish like a weirdo. and sniffing on a catnip toy... I mean Michelle Pfieffer's Selina didn't run around doing that silly crap, they should have dialed it back, but the movie is a guilty pleasure watch cause it is weirdly entertaining. I think Julie Newmar deserves more credit, she had great comedic timing and line delivery that made her rendition really work. I liked the reparte she and Batman had best of the 60s Catwomen. That being said Eartha had the most attention-grabbing presence and the best voice, it's like she was made for the role and her scenery chewing is the best and perfect for the campy fun of the 60s show. Zoe Kravitz in The Batman felt more like a plot device in terms of her role in the movie since her presence was more needed so Batman could solve the mystery in ways he wouldn't have been able to without the convenience of her being connected to Penguin and Falcone. Independent of her ties to them we have nothing really about her noteworthy outside of being a little snarky. The mask was ugly I kept hoping she'd pull together a good mask. Anne Hathaway is great, I wish she had the bullwhip though, and her outfits in the film were all perfection and timeless. You can tell that Nolan was inspired by the 60s show and Julie Newmar with the domino mask, cat ears, brunette hair color, and high heels.
I think Zoe Kravitz’s catwoman isn’t yet going by the moniker of catwoman, which is why she doesn’t have a proper mask, but I do feel like it would’ve been nice if they at least gave her goggles or something to make her disguise more of a disguise. I have a feeling she’ll get a more proper mask in a sequel batman film.
Halle Berry's Catwoman is basically a superheroine/cat-version of a werewolf. I personally think it's actually kind of fantastic. And I kinda suspect most people largely dislike it just for deviating so far from the original canon source materials. (But that's just me. Lol)
Her acting was pretty good but Anne just doesnt have the look. Come on. With her baby face and big, doe eyes, she gives me more puppy vibes than anything remotely feline.
Michelle’s Cat Woman is iconic for me b/c even tho the outfit sounds like a nightmare it looked like a dream and her role in the film was mesmerizing. Oh, and I grew up with Halle’s Catwoman and it is a bad movie (was it this movie AND the Affleck Daredevil with weird romantic interest physical flirting in NY public parks?), but it did give us a fantastic Razzie award acceptance speech.
Oh and I feel bad for never feeling too strongly about Anne Hathaway’s portrayal, but I think it has to do with the messiness of that third Nolan movie and I like the sassy and more unhinged version that is difficult to coexist within a “grounded” Nolan Gotham city.
"Does this mean we have to start fighting?" Julie Newmar certainly caused curious stirrings in our utility belts, and she's still my favorite, while Eartha Kitt's performance grew on me after I got a little older. She'd absolutely scared the hell out of me as a kid. She was so good with her eyes, going from zero to fifty-five, 7:44 to 7:48, and of course, the purring and how she rolled her r-s. An amazing performer, and a remarkable coincidence that she passed away on Christmas back in 2008, known by so many for "Santa Baby." Aside: It's not hard to find a photo of Captain Kirk posing with The Reactor, 8:17, dressed up for the show.
Michelle Pfeiffer will always be the most iconic for me. She was the one I grew up with! I respect what all the other ladies brought to the screen, however, Michelle will always be the most iconic for me!
Ok I gotta rant. I really don’t get why a lot of people shit on Halle Berry’s cat woman. Yeah her transformation into catwoman is silly but a man being bitten by a spider and getting spider powers is silly yet I don’t hear any complaints. The movie did a great job at portraying ageism in the modeling industry and how men treat women for getting older. Not to mention Sharon Stone’s very accurate portrayal of how white women weaponize their tears. I love both Halle and Sharon in the movie and I really wish their performance was appreciated more.
The Spiderman comparison is such a false equivalency lol. But have you seen the movie? The directing is horrible and the script suchs too. Lets be real if Halle Berry wasnt the lead we would of forgotten then movie. Its just really bad structurally.
My fave is still Anne's version, she is just relatable with her duality and struggles. Michelle's version is memorable and iconic, like when ever cat woman is mentioned she will be the first that will pop in your brain. Halle's version is also fine, but the take on being super powered is meeeh. So the ranking here seems fine.
I feel like Zoe was a perfect choice as Catwoman but my god did I hate that ski mask. You mean to tell me that she plans out her whole leather outfit from the neck down but just said eff it and lazily cut a mask that shows 70% of her face? A professional cat burglar would never!
i actually wish that the suit would've been changed to fit the balaclava, not the other way round! i fuckin loved the balaclava, it seemed like something more along the line of what 2022 selina would've gone for - i mean, she isn't bruce wayne, who's rich and unhinged enough to buy an entire custom dramatic suit. she's a burglar, and not really super wealthy, she'd probably use something more accessible to obscure her identity. i wish they'd given her something more similar to a tight-fitting motorcycle suit or something like that, since she rides around on her bike.
Julie Newmar embodied that character body and soul. No one else has come close! Her Catwoman was intelligent, dominant, sexy, nefarious, sadistic, and enjoyed herself immensely. A smarter and more subtly nuanced performance than the other ladies. Hardly just eye candy, although Julie sure knew how to wear that catsuit!
For me, Michelle Pfeiffer is the best Catwoman because Batman Returns is one of my favorite movies of all time. Eartha Kitt’s Catwoman is the most classic and iconic, but Michelle brought so much to Catwoman. She brought an element of Lovecraftian horror to the character that I don’t think was ever considered before: the idea of Catwoman being part of the living dead. When her Selina Kyle was murdered it was like something completely different took agency of that body and brought it back. Michelle captured that so perfectly! Her performance was a true cinematic roller coaster: she was powerful, sexy, hilarious and downright scary in some scenes. Her Selina before death was this innocent little shut-in who let men walk all over her and let her down. When she was murdered by Max Shreck and came back as Catwoman, she was a true force to be reckoned with. Completely unstoppable until she had her revenge. But there was also a fragility and childlike nature underneath all that pain and anger. Her Selina just wanted respect and love, but she never got that in life. So as Catwoman, a living dead woman, she made sure her journey wasn’t over until she had made those who wronged her pay.
Not very fair to Zoe Krawitz's Catwoman, I have to say. Her clothes (leather corset and leather pants) are a nod towards her comic counterpart in Batman Year one by Frank Miller; her Catwoman costume is practical and, thank god, she has a comfy and practical low heel boot; she's acrobatic and her fighting style is very cat-like + it's perfect for her small stature. Also, they ARE meant to be awkward in their romance - she's trying and failing to charm him because he's socially awkward; they're both attracted to each other, but neither is 100% sure what the other is all about, so they don't know what to do . Also also, something you might not know - when cats are threatened, they try to kick with their hind paws as their hind legs are their most powerful body part. You see Zoe's Selina do just that. Her fighting style comprises of low, spin and high kicks, and tactical sambo-like takedowns which are perfect for someone of a smaller stature. In comparison, Bruce Wayne/Batman in the movie is more like a tank, facing opponents straight on with punches, using his weight to the fullest. So no, her character isn't underdeveloped, it's in the smaller details. She did great!
Thank you! People seem to miss the fact that this version of batman is supposed to be a grounded take on him rather than the male power fantasy we are used to seeing If a millionaire who saw his parents get shot infront of his eyes were swinging around in a bat costume beating people up against the law in the name of vengeance, ofc people would think he’s mentally unhealthy and this movie shows that perfectly! It exposed Gotham as this a grim city where the citizens have been so twisted and abused by corrupted higher-ups that actual love seems impossible instead of just a dark Pinterest aesthetic (not that there’s anything wrong with that Tim Burton, it’s just a different approach) Edit: ALSO What makes their relationship special is that they both give eachother something the other isn’t used to Cat woman: a man who won’t immediately fall for her charm Batman: vulnerability form someone equally as strong (and maybe damaged) ANOTHER EDIT OOPS: also the sock mask thing pays homage to her burglar-ness and isn’t meant to be a disguise, just to hide her face while doing crime I’ve seen people say the mask covering only half her face was only to sexualise her even more but she’s CATWOMAN, she’s meant to be hot (if u had a jawline like Zoe it’d also be a crime to hide it) + her entire head being hidden in black would hinder acting and she’d blend in to the darkness of Gotham too easily
@@yenzi930 The Batman with an indestructible suit that tanks gunfire and survives explosions to the face, I liked this move I really do but the idea that this is the first time or only time that Batman or Gotham has been depicted this way is insane
@@oswiroa4973 Yeah. Her story is that she had daddy issues. And she is literaly the same character at the end of the move as she was at the begining. Atleast the dark knight rises catwoman really had development to her character. And she also didn't had cringey lines
I really like how this channel approaches all the material it is analyzing with respect and giving props to the work that went into the art and craft of it, even with properties that are usually dismissed and mocked.
I think her Portrayal was a better match for the Show's tone than Newmar's. Though that may just be my Bias to anything Eartha Kitt Related. A truly remarkable woman both onscreen and Offscreen.
I always liked Catwoman's portrayal in Batman TAS the best. She has my favorite design, and I love the chemistry between her, and Batman. She could throw him off his game in a way none of his other villains could. I also found her being torn between the thrill of being a thief, and just a law abiding citizen very intriguing.
Unpopular opinion but Halle was actually s favorite of mine. Not only did I get to see a transformation in her character (yes, I liked the movie so don't judge me) but she looked fabulous in that catwoman suit.
Anne Hathaway's Catwoman is heavily underrated. People who say she doesn't seem like a cat are just like Bob Kane- WOMEN AREN'T CATS 🤌🏻 why I love this version is because instead of being a literal cat that people wanted to see, Selina was quick-witted, agile and sassy like a cat. I am with you on the ranking, I wouldn't change a thing about the top 3 cat woman 😩❤️
I LOVEEEE the Michelle Pfeiffer one, I also grew up with that one so maybe I am bias but it really is amazing. She does such a good job in the movie, and the costume is my favorite.
I personally think Julie Newmar is the most iconic Catwoman. She is classy, sassy and Julie is just statuesque. Second on my list is Ertha Kitt, she just made that role hers in the few episodes she was in.
Everything about Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman completely mesmerized me as a child. That character shaped my identity as a woman. If I recall correctly, the scene where Catwoman whips the heads off the mannequins was all Michelle, and she did it in one shot without editing.
The costume for Anne Hathaway was designed by Lindy Hemming. Not a man. The stilettos were serrated on the inside like a hunting knife and had a scalpel blade on the outside. I think she did a great job
My favorite catwoman will always be Julie Newmar- I love her sense of humor and the relationship between her and Adam West’s batman was always so delightfully goofy. She always seemed like she was having the time of her life while playing the character. I adore Eartha Kitt’s catwoman too though.
@@nekusakura6748 She’s definitely my least favorite of the three, but she wasn’t bad by any means. I enjoyed her more when she was playing as Miss Kitka than when she was actually in costume as catwoman
I think having a one-sided attraction on The Batman (2022) would've worked way better, and it seemed that the movie was heading that way, with Bruce being a barely functional person falling for Selina, who at first wasn't even interested on him. It would've led to a pretty interesting exploration on Batman's loneliness, vulnerability and kind of clinginess on someone who was clearly the victim, but was getting herself in danger more and more, kinda like a deconstruction on the superhero damsel trope and why the protag falls for her
(I never really leave comments but it was honestly weighing on my mind lol) in defense of Kravitz-Catwoman: The Wigs. I don't think the use of wigs was an aspect of non self-assurance/escape but I felt, as a POC, I felt it was black-girl superpower, which I don't think we've really seen yet as an audience. Being able to blend, shift and change. I think its also a significant part to note that she only really wears wigs when she's at the club: where she's trying to deceive & score revenge, she's playing a character. It's when she's in cat-burgeler mode/working with Batman does she reveal her natural hair -- which I can't help but read into as a POC as a significant nod to trust. You can probably hear my bias lol but just wanted to share this lil black girl's opinion/love for this film lol. Love these essays, thanks for making them!
@@witchplease9695 This is a really fair point: melanin rich women aren't cast enough in these roles, and that loss of representation can be so harmful. i think it's equally unhealthy to validate or invalidate someone's blackness; though it's fair you don't identify with Kravitz. Light skin allies have a duty to use their privileges where they can, but to pick and choose who is and isn't black enough for you (biracial, "white-passing," afro-latinx) I don't feel is the best use of power. That opens the door to discredit/invalidate the voices & experiences of community members like President Barrack Obama, Zendaya, Tracee Ellis Ross to name a few. ALL of this to say, yes, I agree with you, there needs to be greater casting of black women (other than/in addition to light skinned), I just don't want to discredit anyone's black experience, whether they look like me or not.
Cool but she's still only half, and so is Halle berry now that I think about it. I wouldn't want a mixed person representing black women's ability to pull off multiple hairstyles.
I see what you mean @@material-cheshirekhatter2413. The point of my original comment was: the use of wigs shouldn't necessarily be seen as an aspect of escapism but a mode of expression/power/agency for the wearer. Experienced most commonly in my own, personal specific scope: black women. A white author may not see the significance of a wig the same way we do. And I don't want that scene or act of power to be misread and therefore stolen, that was the hope of my original comment. Also I have to reiterate again, Biracial-black people are still black people; They are part of the beautiful spectrum of color and rich diaspora we share as a community. I have No interest in validating or invalidating anyone's blackness (people like Vice President Kamala Harris, Saweetie, H.E.R., Yara Shahidi, Jordan Peele to name a few more). Lets agree, perhaps we are interested in seeing a darker, richer melanin actor take on this role, as we've already seen Eartha Kitt & Halle Berry. Yes, let's encourage that, but let's not discourage any black person's (whether "full" or "half" / light or dark) black experience or black hair experience. That is also my hope
I will always love Michelle as Catwoman but I also enjoyed Zoe's performance as well! I believe that Zoe's Dominatrix look was actually inspired by the looks Selina wears in the comics which you showed earlier (she was a SW at one point in that run) and she often sported wigs in the comics as disguises to track down anyone who threatens the SW of the East end. Thank you for making a video on Catwoman, she's my all time fave fictional character
19:04 Like you said before, Catwoman had her backstory kept secret on purpose for the mystery. She was eventually given a backstory by Kane and Finger. She was a flight attendant who had amnesia and was forced to turn to crime.
Part of Michelle Pfeiffer's huge success in this role is her great chemistry with all other characters, not just Michael Keaton's Batman. The Penguin lusts after her and she scorns him, Max Schreck is alternatively surprised and aroused after her transformation. Also, the kiss-m*rder-s*cide near the final?? I never got over how much sexual tension this superhero movie had.
People expect too much about the relationship between Selina and Batman in the new movie. They both are young, broken, and lonely, so it’s obvious that the interaction was awkward. And I would not call it a “romance”, they just have strong feelings for each other. Again, both are young and lonely, barely have relationships with peers. Selina is impressed by Batman as he is different than most of men in Gotham, and she also appreciate Batman’s goodness. Batman can see the good in Selina, and he hopes that she would change. I know many women like this in real life, and I was not surprised when she gaves him kisses. Some people have been through a lot, so they show appreciation differently. And one more thing: Awkward people DO exist! As an awkward person myself, i hated myself and the awkward interactions that I have with people, including the person I love. But after watching this movie, I truly appreciate how they were depicted; it’s inspirational and I can see myself in it.
THIS! It is the most naturalistic mainstream movie depiction of the messy awkwardness of a blossoming yet undefined relationship with some sort of intimate tension between both characters - IN YEARS! - and to have it take place inside a comic-book super-hero movie franchise (of all settings thinkable) says a lot about the current state of Hollywood.
Michelle pfiefer will always be the best Cat Woman!! Obviously she was a hard act to follow because even a great actress like Halle couldn't stand up to the challenge! Her costume was the sexiest and best, her seductive voice was flawless and she was absolutely beautiful! Also, loved her chemistry with Michael keaton! Shes my fav Catwoman like he's my fav Batman
halle's version of catwoman stays my favorite of all time because it's my childhood movie, and i've seen it a lot like a lot a lot, and to me most people are simply not interested in having another idea of the movie. even though the plot is not the best plot ever (and that's the case for a lot of superhero movies that are considered great), no one seems to actually be interested in the fact that this is the only catwoman movie where cats are actually important characters, their attitude and their history. i loved that from the very begining we see a lot of catwomen and cat history through time, i also loved the scenes with the cat lady who explains to her what is happening. in terms of character and fashion she also stays my favorite, everytime i watch this movie i get a boost of confidence, and seeing a biracial black woman like her playing two superheroes at that time was like amazing to me. i also don't agree with the character of sharon stone. in the movie she clearly is mad at her husband and not at other women, she doesn't mock her friend who is always bright and funny about her sexuality, her character is cold and mean yes but we do see that she is also a victim i didn't buy rob an zoeromance in the movie either lmao seemed like an after thought especially the kiss that was kinda cringe
I thoroughly appreciate the reasoning you give behind your rankings. I just found this channel the other day and I love the level of analysis/well thought out critique you provide.
I understand some of your criticisms for Zoe's Catwoman, but bro, I can't agree that they didn't have chemistry. My friends and I were literally freaking out in the theater every single time Batman shot her a single glance. Their awkward sexual tension was EVERYTHING.
Ikr! I’ve just learned to ignore people who claim there was no chemistry. Like c’mon! They are the minority. Just look at all the reaction videos on UA-cam. The vast majority ship Bruce and Selina in Batman 2022.
Right! I think it's mostly Karens saying they do not have chemistry because they usually say that whenever it's a black woman being desired by a hot white guy. lol
Literally! Not to mention they're both incredibly distrusting individuals from completely different walks of life who value their independence and have just met. You gotta let the romance build, it can't be fireworks straight away
Ranking Lara Croft outfits-as-character-expression would be a neat video to me, if I might make the request. Or ranking the Assassin's Creed outfits, as both character and period expressions. Maybe Final Fantasy protagonists? Something with a longrunning popular videogame series as premise, at least, since those characters also have a lot to expressively imply in terms of what players will be expected to do, how it'll feel to play. And having either those extremely iconic mascotte looks, or extremely pragmatic 'realistic simulation' looks is also an interesting aspect of videogame fashion, that seems somewhat specific to that medium. Thanks for this video anyways!
Anne Hathaway for me. Totally my number 1. I loved her from start to finish as Catwoman. It really modernized her and demonstrated the skill and craftiness a woman possesses in the world. Despite her petite frame, she was a force to be reckon with and to not be underestimated. I mean look what she did to the guy in prison trying to catch a feel xD
Michelle Pfeiffer version is the standard has no near to be rise, she was so beyond in every way. That one and Halley Berry movie is one of favorites interpretation of Catwoman
one of my favorites thing about Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman are her nails. And they are no problem for her. She scratches her opponents and her leather gloves are slitghtly fingerless so that you can still see her thick nails.
Michelle Pfeiffer is Catwoman, she's usually what I think of when I imagine Catwoman I know you didn't include animated versions but I love her in the animated series.
I appreciate that you included Gotham's version of Selina. People tend to forget about the versions of characters on that show, but they are some of my favorites. 😊
I'll never forget her. I bought her Season 1 and season 5 jackets and her blue one (but in black) that she wears in s4. And her maron one she wears in S4 too
Her acting was great, but the direction was abysmal. I saw it just the other week and I swear half the film was long, pointless "action*" scenes using bad CGI (*lots of this just being her running over rooftops). The basketball scene was also cringe. She didn't deserve a razzie for a bad script and director!
as a huge Catwoman fan, I was annoyed that it was the first (and so far, last) time a Catwoman movie was being made and it had nothing to do with the character I loved New character and background, new setting, new supporting characters… the ONE thing I was pleased with was they showed Catwoman using her claws to cut a circle out of a glass case
Maybe another factor was that it was the era of dark edgelord superhero movies. Like you were supposed to be serious and brooding over a rainy city, not eating tuna out of a can and being all sexy and corky at the same time
Hands down there is no true catwoman except for Michelle Pfeiffer!!!!!! She has such a psychotic character range that I haven't seen in any other actress!!!!! I think Zoe comes in second...I think she's got potential and the look but I wish they would've given her a more psychotic dimension..she definitely brings out a hard and soft duality
Julie Newmar was one of my bisexual awakenings tbh. Although not with Catwoman, instead as Dorcas in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Never seen a woman like her before
While all of the actresses brought their own unique take to Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer is the most iconic for me. She brings a certain vulnerability to Selina, and is excellent at portraying her confidence following her transformation too. 😻
YESSS LITERALLY THE MOST ICONIC CAT WOMAN😭
I love Michelle's interpretation but I also would put Zoe's Catwoman at the top because of her accuracy in her character to the comics.
I would agree the same for me
Hard disagree. Eartha Kitt is the most iconic cat woman.
YES! I love Michelle Pfeiffer and anne Hathaway's take on cat woman.
Michelle... iconic
Anne....amazing
They gave the character Catwoman such depth and personality and made her more than just some hot woman in leather.
Michelle is the best for me
She was sexy, crazy, menacing, flirty, unkillable, and iconic
She sew her own catsuit too
Fun fact-
Eartha Kit was Catwoman for only 16 minutes during the one season she had the role yet maintains one of the most iconic iterations in history 👏
I tend to score Eartha as the #1 Catwoman, her immersion into the role made it the perfect balance of threat, intelligence and ability that this villain required. No rocks being tossed at Pfeiffer or Hathaway but neither one of them had their threat level up to par when it comes to facing Batman.
Wow their trash 🗑 for that 🙄
You'r not the only one, love her music too...she is the original singer of Santa baby.. And the second black woman on TV..
Julie Newmar Nr1 with a long shot
@@Inkpinkierosie I think in the 60s the shows were short and sweet. She made appearances everytime the role called for it. She was cast for only the last season of the show. They couldn't offer her anymore screentime as she was only one of many 'villains' that had to fit the roster.
One detail I really like about Pfeiffer's catwoman that I don't really see mentioned often is how the stitching on her chest looks like an autopsy scar.
Nine lives! Well played.
Woah
Halle Berry as Catwoman was so iconic. she was just in a situation where the movie script was badly written
Agreed, with better writing she could have killed it in that role.
Sidenote, I love your content 👏🏾🖤

I remembered loving that movie as a child
@@theprettiestleoxoxo she was awesome and I like that costume.
"I'm a woman, I'm used to doing all kinds of things I don't want to."
That line is SO ICONIC
While your criticism about how Batman and Catwoman's chemistry in The Batman (2022) fell flat is totally accurate and fair, I think that was the point. Before seeing it, I was expecting a passionate sexual whirlwind romance. After seeing it, I understand that everyone in this new version of Gotham is only just getting started. That being said, if/when Bruce and Selina meet eachother again, I imagine there will be much more romantic/sexual tension at play because now, they have a history.
Especially because Bruce being a barely-functioning human being was kinda the point of his character.
agreed
Yup !
@@meko98743 yup the Bale Batman was already a fleshed out character both in and out of the costume. The Pattinson Batman is kinda an egdy recluse that's just starting to see how he's supposed to be as Batman or Bruce.
@@peteartieda58 Pattinson batman is basically Rorschach with a no-kill rule except less sexist and with a good end.
when i first heard that Anne Hathaway is going to play Selina i was kinda sad, cos at the time Anne held this "romantic-comedy" range, and i was not sure if this kind of actress could play such iconic femme-fatale character BUT when i saw the movie i became literally obsessed with Anne as Selina and after all these years I still am
Michelle as Selina/Catwoman >>>>>
Halle was done so dirty because if the movie was good, she would make a fantastic comic accurate Selina imo. (I was 9 when the movie came out and was obsessed with it anyway).
Yea, they focused too much on making her sexy when a cat suit would get that point across easily
Me too
Same. Me growing up as a black latina from the 3rd world i was so amaze when I saw this beautiful black woman and that was a hero/villain but was so cool. I just love the entire movie and every scene but people there hate it.
OMG. So true, I was around that age too and remeber watching it every time it was on TV and loving it!
But in the movie she isn't Selina she's another character
That’s how I felt too - the awkwardness was real lol, but it fit them more than being suave
That’s what you call boring shit, healthy 🫢🤣
Yes! Exactly!
Their relationship is based on mutual respect rather than desire. It feels weird to me that that confuses people.
Michelle Phifer definitely the best catwoman. Best outfit!!!
"Im catwoman, hear me roaarr." Michelle no doubt...
"Women are like cats, so we drew her as a cat. Men are like dogs, so we drew men as a bat, penguin, robin, playing card come to life, and politician with multiple personality disorder. Obviously."
😭 I’m like pretty sure those writers had mommy issues
Also I think he has more of a mix of dissociative identity disorder and bipolar disorder.
playing card come to life lmaooo hilarious comment
to be fair, the 40s was a lifetime ago
LMFAO that's awesome🤣🤣🤣🤣 and yes, with only a cat option? Naay, what if I want to be a wolverine🤣🤣🤣
@@darthtepes ikr!?!! I wish I could have grown up with a female wolverine type character^---^ 💜💜
That shit made laugh out loud I swear 😂😂😂😂
there are boomers out there that grew up believing all dogs were male and all cats were female 🤣
Also that’s not even true for cats - it’s like he never met either a woman OR a cat. Maybe he’s an alien lol
Dog understand no better than men
yeah, i've never really understood why so many apparently heterosexual men like to spend so much time with other men talking about women in a clueless manner instead of talkling to women.
They somewhat attempted it in The Batman by regrettably putting Zoe Kravitz in colorful Party City wigs in a club setting where she doesn’t even need to be disguised.
while I hated that they kept calling Selina’s girlfriend her “friend”, I disagree about removing the romance. actually, I was very impressed by Robert’s acting in the first moment he sees Selina in the club - tho he plays it off as her being useful to his investigation, I found his look at her was clearly one of lust, and interest. he is always unsettled by her. and it shows to me that Bruce is young, and that he craves human contact and being able to just be with someone he likes. it also makes his choice to stay at the end more powerful, because he clearly *wants* Selina, but not enough to abandon his vision for Gotham
agreed i dont call my “friend”, BABY like that
I was so disappointed and confused when I watched it. My sister asked me several times if she was her girlfriend or not and I couldn't answer until it was clearly stated. I felt a bit queerbaited lol
Yea,agreed!! I was like omg she has a gf!!! And she was like "annika is my friend" i was like "wot mate""
Michelle Pheiffer is my favorite Cat Woman too. That “Meow” after the flips was amazing.
I was one of those (Idk how many lol) that found the casting of Zoe as Catwoman totally perfect both physically and "vibe" wise since she's so feline-like. Her stature (I think Michelle and Anne were a bit too tall for the role) way of moving, her eyes and face are very similar to a cat.
what does height have to do with it ?
@@Emietmolaisa2012 When I think of a cat or something catlike it's usually something small. A smaller stature also makes the movement look more fluid and precise because the limbs are shorter.
Disagree. Cat woman is supposed to be long and slender, like a cat. I thought Zoe was perfect face wise but too short. It was like kitten woman not cat woman
There are many small and tall cats - so that’s a moot point, it’s about the way the actresses carried the character and their mannerisms
@@SoWhosGae catwoman is tall and slender. end of discussion
Halle Berry's cat woman has a special place in my childhood. As a little black girl seeing a black woman in a role that was seen as powerful and sexy while being the main character resonated with me.
That was Erica kit was haillie bery
I dunno. 😁 🤣🤣))
It's been too long since I last rewatched it, I should really give it a more recent rewatch soon! ^-^ 😊
But she’s biracial 🙃
I was SO worried you were going to downplay Anne Hathaways performance as Catwoman. People hate on Anne Hathaway for essentially no reason, but I’m so glad you saw how absolutely great her performance was
Anne Hathaway played a role as a Catwoman? Get out of here! Really???
Hmmm looking at the movies that came out in 2012, I bet that movie got overshadowed thanks to Avengers coming out that same year. I also checked the release dates and Avengers came out a couple months before The Dark Knight Rises.
Ann was GOOD , Michelle was GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!
think the ranking been VERY accurate
There are also subtle nuances to Anne's performance that most will not pick up on during the first viewing of TDKR. Anne goes through a wide range of emotions in a short amount of screen time.
@@turtleislandlac1490 no argue , Ann is GOOD
but to me THE BEST cat woman was Michelle, her combination of streangth and vulnerability.

Yes! I think so too. I kinda liked the awkwardness in it - they’re both young, broody, and broken people, do not knowing how to flirt made sense lol
yeah the batman 2022 does a nice job in setting the foundation for their relationship.
you will get your wish ,a sequel for the batman was anounced and Zoe Kravitz was confirmed to be returning
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
This is technically the beginning of catwoman
if there is a sequel to the Batman, I hope they give Zoe's cat women the iconic whip and a new outfit to show how she's evolved while she was away from Gotham, it also gives opportunity to work on the chemistry and make her more as a foe to batman.( also you could you please do a video on the Disney Descendants fashion I'd really like to see your opinion on it.)
OMG yes Descendants !

Camren Bicondova is one of my favorites, I thought she had a great presence and attitude. But I think she was pre-emptively hampered by the frustrating idea of being a middle-school age version of the character. Some characters childhoods are best left unexplored; it can be hard to watch the world break them down, or if the writer coddles them as kids you don't buy they become the adult we know. loved this video and can’t help but agree, Michelle Pfeiffer’s look is by far the most iconic
Michelle Pfieffer is the obvious most interesting one. With the most original and striking costume. I like every choice and outfit from that movie. Her voice, her transformation, I like her as Selina pre and post resurrection and the chemistry was believable
Halle deserved better, I hated the brasierre with ripped up pants look and the headpiece.
Eartha Kitt was made for the role, she is catwoman. Too bad she only appeared in 3-5 episodes and didn’t get a full story. She would have killed.
@@themelanatednomad6989 Very true. I think she left a big impact in spite of having not as many episodes as other villains.
Michelle Pfeiffer literally licked herself as Catwoman too. That clip is even in this video! Lol
Halle Berry's Catwoman is basically a superheroine/cat-version of a werewolf. I personally think it's actually kind of fantastic. And I kinda suspect most people largely dislike it just for deviating so far from the original canon source materials. (But that's just me. Lol)
Saw the title and literally said out loud “if Eartha Kitt not in this, I don’t want it”… thanks for not letting me down. Love these videos!!
I can’t understand why so manny people don’t appreciate Anne’s catwoman enough, like she does a perfecto job characterizing her
Ikr she was a very classy and smart iteration, In terms of emotional manipulation she was also great at that
Yes exactly! She will always be the best cat woman!
I disliked her the most as cat woman, her vibe didn’t match the character at all.
Her vibe was off. She was a cool, great character. But not a great catwoman.
Her acting was pretty good but Anne just doesnt have the look. Come on. With her baby face and big, doe eyes, she gives me more puppy vibes than anything remotely feline.
Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman in what landed her in 2 hit songs and every teenage boy's dream.
My favorites are Michelle Pfiefer and Anne Hathaway’s takes. Michelle is perfect and Anne is underrated.
We never got the rumored Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman movie we wanted so badly.
"Does this mean we have to start fighting?"
Julie Newmar certainly caused curious stirrings in our utility belts, and she's still my favorite, while Eartha Kitt's performance grew on me after I got a little older. She'd absolutely scared the hell out of me as a kid. She was so good with her eyes, going from zero to fifty-five, 7:44 to 7:48, and of course, the purring and how she rolled her r-s. An amazing performer, and a remarkable coincidence that she passed away on Christmas back in 2008, known by so many for "Santa Baby."
Aside: It's not hard to find a photo of Captain Kirk posing with The Reactor, 8:17, dressed up for the show.
I love the Gotham series version of selina, the whole aesthetic of that shows first season is memorable
I loved it too. She's my second favourite, coming up right behind Zoe Kravitz.
Yup she’s the best live action version of the character we’ve gotten so far imo

How do u feel about lilli Simmons as catwoman?

Ok I gotta rant. I really don’t get why a lot of people shit on Halle Berry’s cat woman. Yeah her transformation into catwoman is silly but a man being bitten by a spider and getting spider powers is silly yet I don’t hear any complaints. The movie did a great job at portraying ageism in the modeling industry and how men treat women for getting older. Not to mention Sharon Stone’s very accurate portrayal of how white women weaponize their tears. I love both Halle and Sharon in the movie and I really wish their performance was appreciated more.
i totally agree!!!!!
💯💯💯One of my favorite movies of all time. Only the elites get it.
you know what? i agree with you. i do.
The Spiderman comparison is such a false equivalency lol. But have you seen the movie? The directing is horrible and the script suchs too. Lets be real if Halle Berry wasnt the lead we would of forgotten then movie. Its just really bad structurally.
It sucks the script wasn't better halle wasn't even given a fair shot to make the movie somewhat tolerable
A professional cat burglar would never!
i actually wish that the suit would've been changed to fit the balaclava, not the other way round! i fuckin loved the balaclava, it seemed like something more along the line of what 2022 selina would've gone for - i mean, she isn't bruce wayne, who's rich and unhinged enough to buy an entire custom dramatic suit. she's a burglar, and not really super wealthy, she'd probably use something more accessible to obscure her identity. i wish they'd given her something more similar to a tight-fitting motorcycle suit or something like that, since she rides around on her bike.
but yeah, it does reveal a lot of her face lol. not very anonymous
It's because she's not actually Catwoman yet. She's not at her full potential.
She was not referred as Catwoman in the movie.
@@ellimendi5137 exactly
Julie Newmar embodied that character body and soul. No one else has come close! Her Catwoman was intelligent, dominant, sexy, nefarious, sadistic, and enjoyed herself immensely. A smarter and more subtly nuanced performance than the other ladies. Hardly just eye candy, although Julie sure knew how to wear that catsuit!
FINALLY SOME LOVE FOR ANNE’S CATWOMAN
Yes! She gets too much hate for that role, it could’ve been amazing if her character in that movie was written better :(
yeah
Thank you! People seem to miss the fact that this version of batman is supposed to be a grounded take on him rather than the male power fantasy we are used to seeing
If a millionaire who saw his parents get shot infront of his eyes were swinging around in a bat costume beating people up against the law in the name of vengeance, ofc people would think he’s mentally unhealthy and this movie shows that perfectly!
It exposed Gotham as this a grim city where the citizens have been so twisted and abused by corrupted higher-ups that actual love seems impossible instead of just a dark Pinterest aesthetic (not that there’s anything wrong with that Tim Burton, it’s just a different approach)
Edit: ALSO What makes their relationship special is that they both give eachother something the other isn’t used to
Cat woman: a man who won’t immediately fall for her charm
Batman: vulnerability form someone equally as strong (and maybe damaged)
ANOTHER EDIT OOPS: also the sock mask thing pays homage to her burglar-ness and isn’t meant to be a disguise, just to hide her face while doing crime
I’ve seen people say the mask covering only half her face was only to sexualise her even more but she’s CATWOMAN, she’s meant to be hot (if u had a jawline like Zoe it’d also be a crime to hide it) + her entire head being hidden in black would hinder acting and she’d blend in to the darkness of Gotham too easily
THIS THIS THIS 👏👏👏 PERFECTLY EXPLAINED!!
@@yenzi930
The Batman with an indestructible suit that tanks gunfire and survives explosions to the face, I liked this move I really do but the idea that this is the first time or only time that Batman or Gotham has been depicted this way is insane
zoe kravitz catwoman is easily #2. She has an actual story in the batman 2022 unlike the catwoman from the dark knight rises. This video is so bad lol
@@oswiroa4973 Yeah. Her story is that she had daddy issues. And she is literaly the same character at the end of the move as she was at the begining. Atleast the dark knight rises catwoman really had development to her character. And she also didn't had cringey lines
Michelle pfeiffer as catwoman is unforgettable
That's always been a trait I loved about Catwoman: femininity
I really like how this channel approaches all the material it is analyzing with respect and giving props to the work that went into the art and craft of it, even with properties that are usually dismissed and mocked.
I know 60’s Catwoman is super silly but I love Ertha Kitt’s Catwoman she’s the best part of that show.
I think her Portrayal was a better match for the Show's tone than Newmar's.
Though that may just be my Bias to anything Eartha Kitt Related. A truly remarkable woman both onscreen and Offscreen.
@@nekusakura6748 Hello there fellow Ms Kitt lover! She was a sensual force of nature
@@nekusakura6748 Newmar's catwoman looked more like the og catwoman while eartha kitt appeared only for 16 minutes in the series
@@alessia1940 ok and? she's still iconic.
Well the Catwoman does not have to be serious and neither does Batman, so I completely agree
I totally agree
Thank you for posting, yup 'n yes :-)
This! Thank you.
Pls the section of men being dogs made me laugh, since tons of the men I know aren’t loyal or friendly
It’s so underrated that Eartha Kitt WAS Catwoman. Her look, her voice, her moves. Brilliant!!!!
My favorite catwoman will always be Julie Newmar- I love her sense of humor and the relationship between her and Adam West’s batman was always so delightfully goofy. She always seemed like she was having the time of her life while playing the character. I adore Eartha Kitt’s catwoman too though.
What do you think of Lee Merriweather's portrayal?
@@nekusakura6748 She’s definitely my least favorite of the three, but she wasn’t bad by any means. I enjoyed her more when she was playing as Miss Kitka than when she was actually in costume as catwoman
@@cozytheoverlord4905 She's also the voice of Solid Snake's mother in Metal Gear Solid 4
Agreed! Love Michelle Pfeiffer, but Julie Newmar has been my favorite since I was a kid.
Newmar was amazing, and Lee Meriwether did a great job in the movie.
I think having a one-sided attraction on The Batman (2022) would've worked way better, and it seemed that the movie was heading that way, with Bruce being a barely functional person falling for Selina, who at first wasn't even interested on him. It would've led to a pretty interesting exploration on Batman's loneliness, vulnerability and kind of clinginess on someone who was clearly the victim, but was getting herself in danger more and more, kinda like a deconstruction on the superhero damsel trope and why the protag falls for her
I actually loved the romance between zoe's catwoman and batman!!!
Kravitz is half white. I don’t see her as a representation of me or any Black woman tbh.
@@material-cheshirekhatter2413 This is just dumb. GAWD.
Earths Kitt is my absolute favorite. It’s just… purrrrrrrfect
Yep! That dominatrix look was inspired by Selina's look in the "Batman year one" comic
I loved Carmen version of Catwoman. The brother-sister relationship is there. Especially Bruce looking up to her
19:04 Like you said before, Catwoman had her backstory kept secret on purpose for the mystery. She was eventually given a backstory by Kane and Finger. She was a flight attendant who had amnesia and was forced to turn to crime.
One thing about Anne Hathaway’s stilettos they were still somewhat practical bc they were razor sharp knives
Im so glad that you included Camren Bicondova's selina! I love Gotham😅
Plus when they reunited, it'll be filled with sexual tension cause they'll have a history
Great analyses and lines of argumentation!
My ranked favourites are:
Michelle Pfeiffer (icon),
Camren Bicondova (origin),
Zoë Kravitz (backstory),
Eartha Kitt (catiness),
Halle Berry (campness).
Shes my fav Catwoman like he's my fav Batman
halle's version of catwoman stays my favorite of all time because it's my childhood movie, and i've seen it a lot like a lot a lot, and to me most people are simply not interested in having another idea of the movie. even though the plot is not the best plot ever (and that's the case for a lot of superhero movies that are considered great), no one seems to actually be interested in the fact that this is the only catwoman movie where cats are actually important characters, their attitude and their history. i loved that from the very begining we see a lot of catwomen and cat history through time, i also loved the scenes with the cat lady who explains to her what is happening. in terms of character and fashion she also stays my favorite, everytime i watch this movie i get a boost of confidence, and seeing a biracial black woman like her playing two superheroes at that time was like amazing to me. i also don't agree with the character of sharon stone. in the movie she clearly is mad at her husband and not at other women, she doesn't mock her friend who is always bright and funny about her sexuality, her character is cold and mean yes but we do see that she is also a victim
i didn't buy rob an zoeromance in the movie either lmao seemed like an after thought especially the kiss that was kinda cringe
I thoroughly appreciate the reasoning you give behind your rankings.
I just found this channel the other day and I love the level of analysis/well thought out critique you provide.
What I’m getting is that Catwoman was the DC version of Irene Adler in ‘Sherlock Holmes’.

Michelle Pfeiffer was incredible as cat women. Eartha Kitt was truly iconic!
I literally had this conversation with my husband a while ago. Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman for life!
Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman was my first introduction the character. Eartha Kitt and Anne Hathaway's interpretations are my favorites. 🐱
I already loved this channel, and the fact that you've talked about Comic Book/ Superhero stuff, makes me love it even more!!!!
The fact that I JUST watched the new Batman movie yesterday and this video comes out.
same!
I just watched it now 😭
did you like it?
@@emilyanneflores it was interesting but long
I rate it an 8.9/10, i personally think it’s better than no way home as a film

Halle Berry's razzie acceptance speech was wonderful!
Honestly, my favourite Catwoman interpreters are Michelle, Anne, and Camren.
Michelle Pfeiffer version is the standard has no near to be rise, she was so beyond in every way. That one and Halley Berry movie is one of favorites interpretation of Catwoman
To me, there has never been a catwoman better than Michelle Pfieffer!
one of my favorites thing about Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman are her nails.
Michelle Pfeifer and Halle Berry honestly are my favourite Catwomen ever, I don’t think anyone can beat them for me ever
I appreciate that you included Gotham's version of Selina. People tend to forget about the versions of characters on that show, but they are some of my favorites. 😊
I'll never forget her. I bought her Season 1 and season 5 jackets and her blue one (but in black) that she wears in s4. And her maron one she wears in S4 too
Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman is the most iconic 🖤✨️
8:05 I would argue that Lieutenant Uhura was the first Black Woman to be “romantically involved” with a white man in a lead role.
..yes, in American television
No, Lt. Uhura and Capt. Kirk, we’re the first Black/ White interracial kiss on American Network tv.
I love Michelle Pfieffer and catwoman from Batman the animated series.
I don't get why Halle's version was so hated, she played her like a queen, but i guess awards are based off scrips.
I think because the script and the fact she wasn't "selina kyle"
Her acting was great, but the direction was abysmal. I saw it just the other week and I swear half the film was long, pointless "action*" scenes using bad CGI (*lots of this just being her running over rooftops). The basketball scene was also cringe. She didn't deserve a razzie for a bad script and director!
as a huge Catwoman fan, I was annoyed that it was the first (and so far, last) time a Catwoman movie was being made and it had nothing to do with the character I loved
New character and background, new setting, new supporting characters…
the ONE thing I was pleased with was they showed Catwoman using her claws to cut a circle out of a glass case
also because it wasnt even selina kyle, had horrible writing and a bad plot with an even worse main villain lol
Michelle Pfeiffer. There was an elegance in the way she played the role.
Julie Newmar was one of my bisexual awakenings tbh. Although not with Catwoman, instead as Dorcas in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Never seen a woman like her before
