I love how in Birds of Prey, Harley only has a full blown costume change when there are time jumps. For the majority of the movie she just adds and removes pieces over time as needed-like a real woman with a busy schedule! The director knew what was up.
Most of the time women wear the same thing unless A: the temperature changes and your old clothes are too cold/hot B: you have different places to go that day I wear the same clothes for 2 or 3 days on end, changing either pants or shirts. Most girls are like that. A shirt can be worn for multiple days (changed into pjs at night obviously) and so can pants. I loved the Birds of prey outfits, they seem to be more realistic.
And that she only changed her bra twice. I know some might find it unhygienic, but many women (myself included) use the same bra unless it's really dirty or sweaty.
i’m glad you talked a lot about the pigtails. i really wish high pigtails weren’t so sexualized in adults. i think high pigtails are a really cute hairstyle and fit harley’s character.
Completly agree! I love pigtails and space buns so much and Harley looks so cute in them tho I dislike they are seen as something that is both childish and sexualized because those two are terms that are kinda... Uncomfy together
My favroite version of her pigtails are her new 52 pigtails/roller derby harley, but not the dyed ombre blonde nonsense, half black and red to the root. I feel like those look less childlike because of the color scheme, and because them being straight instead of having bouncy soft curlz UwU
@@octabodemes exactly!! i do think space buns don’t hold the same connotation as higher worn pigtails. and i really hate how pigtails are seen as childish and are sexualized. i know women with shorter hair who can’t wear ponytails, but can wear pigtails. it’s a convenient hairstyle that keeps hair even and out of the face! and i find it fun to have pigtails bouncing around while i’m walking or doing chores, and im in my twenties! i wish in the modern day we could accept that some people just want to style their hair in pigtails just because, and not for sexual reasons. (there’s probably cultural reasons as to why we see pigtails this way today)
Every time I wore my longer hair in pigtails or space buns because of the Aesthetic ™ I would get gross "handlebars" comments from men. From highschool through my mid 20's. Like. No. Why do they inherently view this as sexual when people are just trying to be cute? Young women aren't there for the sake of men.
You can clearly see the difference between the movies, where one was made with the male gaze in mind, portraying Harley as eye candy, and the other from a female point of view where she's the main protagonist, and not just something nice to look at.
While I still really like the suicide squad costumes one can just tell that both Harley and Margot look and feel way more comfortable and happier in the birds of prey outfits. She just shines more in them. And they have way more character too. And I gotta add that even the leaked outfits for the new suicide squad look awesome, my favorite being her red tule dress
I do like that the outfits are less sexual. But they are too busy. The Suicide Squad outfits became iconic due to their unique style and simplicity and not just because they were revealing (the Halloween costumes women wore were often less so). The Birds of Prey costumes have million things going on at once and they are often still impractical and not aspirational for women either (some are but not many of the trailer outfits).
@Blashtifin completely agree. her clothing is a great physical representation of the person she at that moment! its also less sexy which is a good representation of her evolution 🧚🏻♀️
I love that they put her in overalls after the quote about Harley not being someone that would wear denim overalls from David Ayer. Maybe that was intentional, maybe not but I love it
You can clearly see the difference between the movies, where one was made with the male gaze in mind, portraying Harley as eye candy, and the other from a female point of view where she's the main protagonist, and not just something nice to look at.
Especially that it's such a bullshit thing to say. How are not denim overalls Harley's thing? They are a bit childish and fun looking but also practical, that's perfectly in line with Harley's personality!
I was searching up a storm before I came down to the comments and saw this. I thought it most closely resembled an inverted look to a Julia Roberts look in Oceans 12 movie tho I’ve never see it. I thought Harley’s hat/scarf combo was more elegant/charming like Audrey Hepburn’s hat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or a scarf Joan Crawford would use to keep her hair flawless. Oh, the wasted Google searches. 🙃
Idk but for some reason the scene where she takes off the scarf/hat and flips back her coat to get out the gun reminds me of the scene in the mask where during the shooting in the nightclub Jim Carrey gets out the super gigantic guns. I can't shake off the feeling that the shot is also referencing this due to the comedic/cartoonish tone in both movies.
I was rewatching birds of prey a few days ago, and I noticed that Harley wears that pink sports bra throughout the film and it was like I had a revelation! Well, apparently she didn't shower at all from the moment she went out with her friends before exploding the factory, and that's very understandable since she had to start running and fighting a lot of people all of a sudden. So it makes sense that she would only change her clothes depending on what she's about to do but keep the underwear for timing purposes. And now it makes complete sense together with what you said in the video
@@jrivers6077 from experience having dyed my hair a lot over the years, a shower would wash the colour out of your hair rather than making it look brighter
I think its telling how many guys thought Harley wasnt hot looking in birds of prey. So much of what shes wearing is cute, it is attractive, but men are Really Really used to seeing women Perform, and not Be Themselves kinda cute
Right! Margot Robbie is more beautiful than anyone you'd be likely to see on a daily basis in real life, but these neckbeards had the nerve to say she wasn't "sexy enough", when wearing these fantastic outfits, that looked like something a woman would wear and not something a man would put her in. I loved that Cathy Yan let Harley's makeup not always be perfect, and not just to illustrate that she's crazy or bad or whatever. Her foundation looked normal but visibly cakey and not "fresh" in the closeups when the bad guy had her tied to a chair. Like, of course it would be in her situation, it was a visual storytelling device anyone who wears makeup would recognise. It really struck me how differently the camera looks at women with a female director at the helm.
The amount of men I saw saying she looked “an ugly mess” in her club outfit when she is literally having a drunken meltdown over a breakup. And also Margot Robbie can’t look ugly, it’s scientifically impossible
@@susanalopez5052 Margot Robbie's "ugly mess" looks are more gorgeous than my best days, I stan her so hard 😂 I can't help seeing the parallels between this movie and Jennifer's Body with the reception, I truly hope it finds its audience and becomes a cult classic.
I really love all her outfits in BOP. It's very chaotic but also eye catching. It shows you don't have to wear something revealing when playing Harley. She was never that type of character yes, she can and has wore revealing clothes but never to the point were it's like Poison Ivy. In my opinion
Even Poison Ivy is covered up. In her New52 look in the comics, she's completely covered up in what looks like black latex suit with green pattern throughout. She looks just as sexy without revealing half her ass like what Harley Quinn looked like in Suicide Squad and even Wonder Woman in Justice League.
I feel peace remembering that after such a sexist movie like suicide squad, that the director intentionally focused on her privite parts, Margot had a chance to shine in birds of pray with the character the she's eternalizing.
@@princesssparrow4530 yes she did! I’m glad we got birds of prey. Suicide Squad made Harley seem like she can’t live without the Joker, but now we got to see her finally break loose and become a more independent woman
I don’t usually comment that much, but I want to say one thing. Harley’s outfits in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey show the difference between a male and female director. David Ayer is a director that usually sexualizes the main female character to make her appealing to the male audience. A female director would focus more on how the character looks and how her character reflects her fashion sense. I know that Margot Robbie said that she found the Suicide Squad costumes uncomfortable, but she had to endure it because she was working with a male director that hyper sexualize female characters. It’s an observation that I had that I think should be noted. Edit: I’m surprised at the amount of likes and replies my post gotten. I do see that many of you say your opinions on the matter. I have done some research and both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey had female costume designers. I based my observation on the information from the video. I also don’t agree with not having more male directors. I think male and female directors should be more equal in the number of them. Male directors should create female characters with more respect than just making them objects of desire. I also understand that the costumes reflect on Harley’s character development from each movie. I wanted show what I considered the creative process behind the scenes.
i agree! i think movies with female leads, esp a movie like BOP with a big female ensemble cast should have a female director, cathy yan is such a good director but i dont think dc will be working w her or making more stuff like BOP since it wasnt received well :((((
I think a lot of people tend to forget that Margot was part of the process for her suicide squad costume design. She's the one who said she wanted her Harley to look like the main singer of Blondie as she didn't like any of the comics costumes. So I don't think it's accurate to blame the male director when Margot and the costume designer, also a woman, decided on what to wear.
i disagree. the change in the character is also a big role. in suicide squad she dressed along the lines of the comics for her role as joker's girlfriend and honestly his property because of their toxic relationship. i think the change in clothing helped signify her new independence
As I guy, I personally think that her birds of prey costumes are better. Full of personality, creative and just because she isn't in a push up bra, booty shorts and strategically torned shirt does not mean Margot Robbie is not still attractive. Personally, her main birds of prey outfit with the harley shirt is my favorite.
this is the thing so many men are forgetting! its margot robbie as harlequin... she isnt wearing a massive burlap sack either. shes still objectively gorgeous in BoP. its scary how clearly the the porn industry and sexualisation in media has influenced them that they think an actress needs to be practically naked to be attractive.
unfortunately people aren’t supporting them tho. wonder woman and captain marvel are like the only ones that did big box office numbers. come on y’all we gotta support these films so we get more 😭😭
@@madelynbisset1962 nah, not all women think the same, also many feminist hated that ww wore a skirt and had shaved armpits ! you got feminist loving songs like wap!!! feminist are not the same as women! patty jenkins is a woman! Bri Larson is a feminism so is captain marvel!
@@kicknowledgesmith8608 Sorry for the paragraph but, here is my take as a feminist: Not all women are the same, and neither are all feminists. As a feminist myself, I did not mind Wonder woman's outfit. It wasn't amazing but it was at least more armored and practical than some earlier renditions. Also, it was somewhat true to her character to wear a skirt. And shaving is a woman's personal choice. As a feminist, I do not believe that all women should skirt gender norms, only that they should be allowed to do so if they wish to. And the reason feminists, like wap, is because a woman is taking control of her own sex appeal, saying that she likes sex, being vulgar. Not every woman has to like the song or to be provocative. But they should always have a choice. Just like men very often rap about sex, women should also be allowed to do that, encouraged to do that if they wish to.
i think it's so notable that harley's shorts in birds of prey are HIGH WAISTED, truly a woman dressing for herself rather than the male gaze EDIT: i did not say that everyone who prefers low waisted is catering to the male gaze, i was pointing out that this particular film character switched to high waisted when she stopped being designed for the male gaze. chill guys
@@reneeleese I hope that they'll still be a good chunk of high waisted jeans too. Low waisted jeans make styling things a lot harder when you're plumper.
Wow thats really sad that the actress was super uncomfortable with the clothes. They could've accommodate her even just by giving her an inch more of covering 🤦🏾
The movie was made by men. They make it appealing to men. It's disgusting how sexualised she is and very sad to think that men like that. It reminds me of porn producers. Also I believe that birds of prey would've done better if it wasn't for covid. It was a much better movie than suicide squad and also directed/produced by women.
@@aylennarbaes A big factor of Birds of Prey is a lot of people thought it was a renamed suicide squad 2 and I know that put a lot of people off because let’s face it Suicide Squad was a terrible movie. I’m torn between hoping the actual suicide squad 2 will be good so we get more of them and they improve and hoping they just give up and make more Harley/birds of prey movies.
@@aylennarbaes you have to agree that, the emphasis of the fashionable brand labels in Bird of Prey is a new statement of Harley's representation. her outfit choices are so much more bolder in comparison to Suicide Squad. it felt like a very trendy incantation motion in place, kinda like Cinderella/Elsa transformation.
@UCP5s5jBgwAZKYnf1AVTh5qA saying that she “signed the contract” but also that she “could have left” is kinda contradictory. Loads of actors have done movies they didn’t want to do because they had already signed the contract and couldn’t afford to leave the project when things started to go down hill (breaking contracts tends to cost money. Sometimes a lot of it, and that’s not counting the cost of lawyers) it’s highly likely that Margo Robbie had already signed the contract before she got to see what costume they were expecting her to wear. Also, people are allowed to not like aspects of their jobs and are allowed to talk about those negative aspects. I don’t think I’ve met a single person who hasn’t complained at least once about their job, even if it’s a dream job of theirs.
It's interesting how the sexist fanboy claimed that BOP bombed because Harley was less seductive. Wonder Woman was under sexualized in her film and did amazing at the box office. Objectively, Wonder Woman did way better than Justice League, which arguably over-sexualized WW and the other amazons. Besides, BOP is a girl-power movie. It would be ludicrous to make a girl-power movie that appeals to the male gaze because it is not written for heterosexual men.
The movie bombed because it had the wrong name, weaken characters whose origins stories were all fucked up, the directors didnt know anything about Harley expect for the animated series, she is fucking boring as hell in the movies but in the comics she is an amazing 3 dimensional character who has her faults but makes due. She isnt some ditzy blonde who let Joker kick her ass. She killed him. It fucked her up sure because love is a hell of a drug but fuck.
I liked that she was comfortable in them but I kinda didn't like the look of them. like I wish her outfit didn't look so cheap and the colors clashed so much.
ughh i love everything about her "drink away the pain" club outfit. the long open glitter coat, the swaggy high waist pants, the layers and textures of velvet and glitter, slightly dark lip and the updo... i WISH the entire wardrobe of the film came out as an affordable chain store collab or smth because i honestly crave these pieces...
I absolutely loved the outfits in birds of prey, as a woman watching the movie i didnt felt the disconfort that i felt while watching margot robbie in those horrible underwear shorts on ss, you could just tell those were unconfortable as hell
Honestly though, like I think just wearing normal underwear would've actually been more comfortable. Those shorts look like they'd instantly give you bad chaffing or just cut right into your thighs.
I love all of your analyses of different movie costumes, it's clear that you put so much research, time, and effort into every single one! My favourite Harley outfit isn't featured in the films, it's the Harley Bombshell outfit. It's very pin-up inspired and I like the aviator glasses that are on her head.
honestly up until this video, i didn't notice just how much of a fashion icon she is. and they're so recongnizable which also makes them so good, you instantly know how we're talking about if you see blonde pigtails and a blue and red color scheme
I love how, in her chaotic fringe hangover look, her natural hair color is showing. Maybe its just me but I saw it as a reference from a joke in BTAS. Harley accuses Batman that he underestimates her as a "blonde bimbo" and then chastises him by telling him that she doesn't have blonde hair
What I like about Harley's costume in the 2019 tv animated tv show is that her body is not the main focus unlike the comics. The outfit shows skin but is not meant to be sexy.
The club outfit after she and the Joker broke up and the gold overalls are my favorite outfits. I also really like the outfit she wears during the break up scene, you don't really get to see it in the movie but in the set pictures it just looks really cool and casual.

And trust me, no one is thinking about what you wear more than you are, because they're all thinking about themselves👍edit:spelling
I ADORED the gold overalls, I also loved when Harley handed another one of the ladies a hair tie during the big fight scene!!! She felt so much more like a real person in Birds of Prey, and not a caricature of the male gaze, like you described.
I was talking to my friend a while ago about Harley being the most popular halloween costume, and we agreed that a big part of the reason is she's "Cute sexy." A lot of women want to feel hot, but still have fun with their look. I think Suicide Squad leanss more on the hot side of it while Birds of Prey goes in hard with the fun and cute aspects of Harley. I love how bright and colorful her outfits are in birds of prey, there's a lot going on but it still all works together.
Before the Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend scene, she was focused on the topic of finding the diamond for Roman, and when she then dreams into Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend scene, she holds on to the diamond topic. Ya get what I mean?
@@lucentish2458 The actor should still feel comfortable in their outfits even if it sacrifices what little story you can tell with needless sexualization.
On the subject of pig tails. I wish people would stop saying there inherently sexual. Anything can be seen as sexual if you want it to. So instead of saying we needed to get rid of them, just stop seeing as sexual in nature
Suicide Squad vs. Birds of Prey really shows the difference between directors working to favor the male gaze vs. directors working to favor the character, and it's incredible.
All 3 movies had female costume designers tho. A characters wardrobe is part of the story telling. Harley had a major visual change because of her character development. Kate Hawley did Suicide Squad. Erin Benach did Birds of Prey. Judianna Makovsky did Suicide Squad 2.
@@okayfloatstudios3097 remember that costume designers are still directed by the directors. Birds of Prey was directed by a woman- Suicide Squad wasn’t.
@@annamageste i still find it more believable that the costume change has to do with the change in harley's independence and mental state. in suicide squad she was "Joker's", he basically owned her and controlled her. in BoP, we see a new found identity where it seems like she actually chooses her clothes and hair, breaking away from the comic book costume look.
@@cait3196 but she did ask and complain to make small changes to the outfits bc the shorts were too short but the director of ss refused and also bop and ss aren't sequels of each other
@@annamageste Yes like I said the wardrobe is part of the story. The directors dictates the visuals but the female stylists are the one suggesting the outfits to go along his vision. Harley was brain washed and enslaved by the Joker in Suicide Squad. She wore male gazey attire yes but that was part of her character. She dressed for a man. “Property of Joker” was literally written all over her. Birds of Prey she gets emancipated. Her personal style starts to come out in fun colors and random outfits as she’s experimenting & finding who she is as a single woman without the Joker. Suicide Squad 2 it’s a time jump. She’s found herself and established herself as Harley Quinn. She has her staple red & black color scheme. She is sure of who she is now. She’s definitely no longer “the jokers girlfriend”.
When i watched birds of prey i was so blown by all the outfits. From Harley's change of fashion (going from the sexualised version to a style where she's dressing for herself) to Huntress's comfortable clothing that looked amazing and enabled her to fight- all of it is just mind-blowing! Shows how good costume design can make a movie enjoyable. No where during the movie i was questioning their outfits, specially during the action scenes!
As a male i actually love the idea of her evolving. dressing more for her than the joker however i do like her blue and pink hair than red and black not all dc fanboys are weird
@Ocean Blue what did I do tho? I just stated my opinion what the comments are for but you clearly want some attention so I'm glad I made your day I dont know who hurt you but hope you can get it together and thank you for the applause 😄
@Ocean Blue okay... still kind of unecessary. Seemed he was just sharing his opinion and agreeing w/ the video, he even told you he doesn't want a pat on the back. appreciate what you're doing, but this one ain't worth it.
I love all of Harley’s costumes but i definitely like the birds of prey costumes more they just feel more unique and I’m happy Margo Robbie was happier in the birds of prey movie.
I think the pigtails serve a purpose. They are to show her regression at the hands of the joker due to his torture and abuse. They are supposed to make her seem more childlike, because at this point, as also illustrated by the daddy’s little monster tattoo, she sees herself as his “babygirl”. They are supposed to be there to make you uncomfortable. She isn’t a sane person, she’s being hurt by the joker, and even her hairstyle choice proves it.
I just want to say how much I appreciate you analyzing/including comic book characters in your analysis videos (I'm a huge superhero fan). Most people overlook or negatively regard these films when they offer more than mindless action & quoteable quips.
I have to say that I love her outfits from Birds of Prey, especially the chaotic "drink the pain away" outfit, femme fatal outfit, and pink pajama onesie, which is as cute as cute can get
I know many people disliked Birds of Prey but personally I freaking loved it and the outfits are so bright, cute and iconic. And that's coming from someone who prefers dark colors.
Birds of Prey did such a fantastic job giving a nod to the roots of Harley’s character while also reinventing her. One of my favorite details is 92 as her roller derby number to pay tribute to the year of her debut.
YESSSS! I had no idea how much I wanted this video from you but it's made my day, thank you 💖 I love how Birds of Prey recontextualised Harley's Suicide Squad outfits. She talks about losing herself while she was in a relationship with the Joker, and I think that's beautifully illustrated with her silhouettes. In Suicide Squad, her clothes are skin tight and barely there. Her silhouette is just her body, which is obviously gorgeous because Margot Robbie is beautiful, but it's the least personality you could show with a silhouette. Then, the first outfit she's wearing in Birds of Prey is that huge sparkly caution tape jacket. She's taking up space. It gives her a big-shouldered silhouette and an impression of bulk. She's asserting her presence and strength, but also keeping other people at both a literal and emotional distance. By the time of her funhouse fight outfit, she's finding herself. It's both practical and whimsical, the overalls are utilitarian but the triangular shape of the plunging neckline is cartoony and fun. And her last outfit with the gorgeous tailored blue blazer is her most mature silhouette yet, illustrating how much she's "grown" over the course of the film.
Harley has stars on her helmet and outfit for roller derby because she's the jammer, the one that scores points, and they always have a star or a stripe. Blockers try to stop the jammer from scoring points. I mean, also stars because Harley Quinn.
14:04 That's exactly what happened. In the new 52 Harley Quinn comics, she was browsing for job offers to make some money to pay for the new apartment complex she got as a gift. She saw the roller derby add in the newspaper and when she saw the outfits, she was sold.
Was mostly feeling her BoP outfits. Especially, that one she was rocking during the final battle since it reminds me alot of Jolyne Kujo of the JoJo Bizarre Adventure series
I love how your analyzing is very much similar to what went through my mind when I watched suicide squad and BOP! to be honest, i felt very uncomfortable seeing harley's outfit in suicide squad because it was very revealing, unpractical for fighting, and the pigtails giving off that 'school girl' impression.. shudder. but in BOP, her outfit felt liberating. it's harley freely expressing herself through colours and texture and pattern- in a way, her dressing up for herself was like when i first started to express myself through my own choices of clothing to break away from societal standards (i grew up in a conservative family/country). also, yay for sports bras!! gotta take care of the girls, indeed! people may have so much to talk shit about BOP, but it will remain as one of those films that has a special place in my heart!
Speaking of Margot Robbie a cool video idea might be to speak on the outfits Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan wore, and how it played into their public image at the time.
The morning after chase scene probably is my favorite, but god, all her outfits in BoP are so good. I really enjoy that first drinking ensemble too; the makeup in that scene is amazing and I love the embellished eyebrow.
The Suicide Squad outfits are more recognizable in a way, but the Birds of Prey ones are more fun and though they do not scream "Harley Quinn" per say, they do have more personality and are more interesting to look at.
I think the reason to why that is is because the color scheme doesnt scream harley quinn but because its so wacky and absurd you could tell its a Harley outfit
i love your videos so much omg. they are literally so relaxing and calming but also so interesting at the same time. it just brings me a brief moment of peace where i can just forget about everything else in my life.
I swear, I could listen to your voice for hours. It's so smooth, knowledgeable, and light. I love to video and analysis as well, but your voice makes it just that much better!
I find it interesting how even though her costumes in BOP are kind of fantastical and even costume-y, they still make the character feel so much more real to me than the costumes in Suicide Squad. It makes sense why she would pick those clothes in the different situations, and it makes her seem much more like a real person. Honestly her night out-costumes remind me so much of my dream going out-outfits cirka 2016 with the sequins, velvet, bright pink eyeshadow. I love it! Also, I remember when the teaser trailer dropped, people (men) would comment that it looked more like an H&M ad than a superhero movie trailer. And honestly, why does that have to be a bad thing? Just because we are used to seeing female superhero characters portrayed through male gaze, and when the aesthetic diverts from that it is frowned upon (by men) because it's more coded by typical female interest like actual modern fashion. Sorry if I'm not making any sense, but this video was a bit of an eye opener honestly.
I absolutely loved Harley's outfits in BoP, they are something that you would see in a fashion show, over the top, lots of colour blocking and busy, but that's exactly their charm! And it reflects Harley's emotions and personality perfectly. My favourites were the club one and the last one. She looks so hot in the club scene with the interesting makeup and the layering of the star one piece, I kinda want to find a similar piece for me now. And the last outfit is just so beautifully coordinated in terms of colour, that blazer is something that I see in my dreams and will probably never manage to buy.
I've re-watched this three times and the amount of understanding you have for the character honestly far surpasses any I have heard from fanboys as my 6 years as a manager of a comic shop.
It's interesting that even in the trailers for Suicide Squad 2, Harley also has pigtails, but they're lower down and don't look girlish, she's wearing a dress that covers her pretty well, and has practical combat boots. It's still very Harley but it's way less sexual and respects what Margot said about not wearing skintight sexy clothing.
I love how in this movie they also use gymnastics in her fighting style. Because in the comics when she was a child she did gymnastics and seeing how they use more of it in this movie is cool because this is who she is and not someone else’s.
With her outfit in the police station I thought of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s harleys interpretation of a classy woman. Audrey and Marilyn M Different Styles and the views on both of them are major
The outfits in Suicide Squad 1 were fun and raunchy but intentionally performative. The outfits in Birds of Prey were free and silly and captivating. All of them use so much visual storytelling, it's a treat to watch her journey illustrated by them
im so amazed at how you arent a so called regular yet you managed to fully understand the costumes. you really nailed and got what the designers were going for! great video
i gained so much respect for cathy yan (the birds of prey director) in the table dancing scene. for those who didn’t see the film, a woman is forced to dance on a table w her dress cut off. the camera only focusing on her lower legs, but it mostly shows her face. a lot of male directors would do the body panning, but cathy yan avoided it. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Every time I wore my longer hair in pigtails or space buns because of the Aesthetic ™ I would get gross "handlebars" comments from men. From highschool through my mid 20's. Like. You can clearly see the difference between the movies, where one was made with the male gaze in mind, portraying Harley as eye candy, and the other from a female point of view where she's the main protagonist, and not just something nice to look at.
Waw only one comment wow
Soon enough it will have more

and she is something nice to look at anyways, she pops up with the bright colors and funky outfits, harley it’s such a great character
I preferred her look more in suicide squad
While I still really like the suicide squad costumes one can just tell that both Harley and Margot look and feel way more comfortable and happier in the birds of prey outfits. She just shines more in them. And they have way more character too. And I gotta add that even the leaked outfits for the new suicide squad look awesome, my favorite being her red tule dress
@@Sp1ritB0x that one is awesome too!! And I love how they gave her braids
It's still looks féminine but also combat ready, I love it!
so true i love the evolution of her outfits into birds of prey- it goes with her personal character development! 🧚🏻♀️

Especially that it's such a bullshit thing to say. How are not denim overalls Harley's thing? They are a bit childish and fun looking but also practical, that's perfectly in line with Harley's personality!
the hat and scarf outfit its a reference to Batman the animated series Episode - Harley's Holiday where she wearsa similar outfit.
I think its looks like Bonnie and Clyde
Ooohhh! I was gonna say Tim Burton but you’re totally right!
I can't shake off the feeling that the shot is also referencing this due to the comedic/cartoonish tone in both movies.
it looked very comic esque to me
I just realized, I thought Harley put holes in her derby helmet for her hair but no... she duct-taped her cut pigtails to the helmet. WE STAN!
:0 that’s so cool
Lol!!!! I thought that's what I was seeing! Omg!
Okay that is really really cool!
It makes so much more sense!!! I never understood how Harley redyed her hair after she changed her prison clothes in Suicide Squad
Well she took a shower at the police station lol
@@jrivers6077 from experience having dyed my hair a lot over the years, a shower would wash the colour out of your hair rather than making it look brighter
and she just added some items or removed /such as the shirt/, like an actual person who hasnt been home or being able to shower and change clothes

@@alenavesela2213 lmao that is clearly a personal opinion and one that you are in the minority in if you look at the comments here.
True. Harley is the type of gal who doesn't mind a crop top every now and again, but isn't the kind to just walk around in a bikini 24/7.
I feel peace remembering that after such a sexist movie like suicide squad, that the director intentionally focused on her privite parts, Margot had a chance to shine in birds of pray with the character the she's eternalizing.
It's amazing seeing Margot fight for this character, she really saw potential!
@@princesssparrow4530 yes she did! I’m glad we got birds of prey. Suicide Squad made Harley seem like she can’t live without the Joker, but now we got to see her finally break loose and become a more independent woman

@@jovamoment that may be true but it's really good that Harley finally got a chance to be her own character instead of an object for male gaze!
@@Angel-pk6wn yah of course
Couldn't agree more!
Reminds me of how Wonder Woman was filmed in Justice League versus her standalone movie that was directed by a woman.
i agree! i think movies with female leads, esp a movie like BOP with a big female ensemble cast should have a female director, cathy yan is such a good director but i dont think dc will be working w her or making more stuff like BOP since it wasnt received well :((((
I think a lot of people tend to forget that Margot was part of the process for her suicide squad costume design.
Same. I kept replaying the part when she has a showdown with the prisoners only to see that outfit in action 😝

@@kicknowledgesmith8608 Sorry for the paragraph but, here is my take as a feminist:
Not all women are the same, and neither are all feminists. Just like men very often rap about sex, women should also be allowed to do that, encouraged to do that if they wish to.
i think it's so notable that harley's shorts in birds of prey are HIGH WAISTED, truly a woman dressing for herself rather than the male gaze

Objectively, Wonder Woman did way better than Justice League, which arguably over-sexualized WW and the other amazons. Besides, BOP is a girl-power movie. Suicide Squad vs. Birds of Prey really shows the difference between directors working to favor the male gaze vs. directors working to favor the character, and it's incredible.
It’s so easy to tell when a woman’s dressing her vs a man haha
All 3 movies had female costume designers tho. A characters wardrobe is part of the story telling. Harley had a major visual change because of her character development.

I'd also like to point out that Harley taped the pigtails she cut on the roller derby helmet 😂 love her

I absolutely LOVE the outfits in Birds of Prey! They’re so uniquely flamboyant

Especially, that one she was rocking during the final battle since it reminds me alot of Jolyne Kujo of the JoJo Bizarre Adventure series
she’s probably the best harley quinn i’ve ever seen.
I think the reason to why that is is because the color scheme doesnt scream harley quinn but because its so wacky and absurd you could tell its a Harley outfit
i love your videos so much omg. they are literally so relaxing and calming but also so interesting at the same time. it just brings me a brief moment of peace where i can just forget about everything else in my life.
i love the black trench coat look with the fuchsia scarf sm
I swear, I could listen to your voice for hours. It's so smooth, knowledgeable, and light. I love to video and analysis as well, but your voice makes it just that much better!
I honestly lost count how many times I’ve seen this video for pure enjoyment!
Me too! Harley is also my fav character
I love how female centric birds of prey is and how it really feels like Harley is finally allowed to dress herself
I only just watched Birds of Prey and I'm so happy they made it this way, and that Margot got to feel much more comfortable in it.
My fave Harley Quinn outfit is definitely the last one in Birds of Prey. It’s so incredibly glam rock I love it
I love how in this movie they also use gymnastics in her fighting style.
I am so in love with Harley's drinking outfit and styling!
I didn't expect you to post a video about this, but I'm not complaining. :)
It's a tiny detail but I enjoyed that Harley gave Dinah a hair tie when she was having trouble fighting with her hair flying about!
The outfits in Suicide Squad 1 were fun and raunchy but intentionally performative. The outfits in Birds of Prey were free and silly and captivating. All of them use so much visual storytelling, it's a treat to watch her journey illustrated by them
im so amazed at how you arent a so called regular yet you managed to fully understand the costumes. you really nailed and got what the designers were going for! great video
As a comic fan, I adore the costuming of Harley in bop it really captured the spirit of her solo series books to me
I honestly just really love birds of prey, especially it's outfits, I really hope it gets a sequel
I bought the birds of prey boots and I absolutely LOVE them
i gained so much respect for cathy yan (the birds of prey director) in the table dancing scene. for those who didn’t see the film, a woman is forced to dance on a table w her dress cut off. the camera only focusing on her lower legs, but it mostly shows her face. a lot of male directors would do the body panning, but cathy yan avoided it. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The last scene outfit is personally my favorite ! So much David Bowie inspirations !
I also love the fact that Harley not only cut her hair short but gave herself bangs! I think she looks so good in them!
I LOVE Birds of Prey outfits, like, all of them and I would love to be able to have any of those pieces
I absolutely loved all the outfits in this movie, and I don't remember the last time a big budget blockbuster used costumes to add so much personality
I started cheering when she finally got to eat her sandwich in the end 😂
"I been WAITING for this one! turn it up!"
