I think Bruce does feel he's at a major disadvantage and that the theatricality he employs shows it in the same "Zoo" metaphor the story's been using. Spikes, loud sounds, chemicals, and making oneself appear larger are all techniques used by prey animals to survive. Maybe while he's trying to be viewed as a predator he actually feels like the prey
Eddie talking to his Brainiac looking Riddler designed robot reminds me of the Jim Carrey version of the character, which I always appreciate a good Batman Forever reference
Selina and Martha were the real highlight characters for me and it showed that Bruce does reach out to others but is often reluctant to. I think that Black Mask deal is a fakeout but who knows how much resilience this Batman has at this point in his career.
Oh yeah it's obviously just a fakeout on Bruce's part, he's 100% using the "deal" to gain Sionis' trust so he can take down his organization from within, but it's still really a really risky play and I'm anxious to see if it'll pay off
On a meta level, I really enjoyed how this issue sets Black Mask up as a foil to Bruce by effectively giving him the offer to become more like his prime universe self, with all the money and resources to make him a "true hero" who doesn't have to struggle to make a difference, while also effectively threatening to take away his underdog status which makes him and the rest of the Absolute Universe unique in the first place. It's a great thematic beat which feels like it has genuine consequences for the characters involved! Obviously Bruce is only pretending to go along with the offer as a way to get more information and take down Black Mask's organization from within, but I'm still very excited to see where it goes! Also, Sionis mentioning that he's part of an organization of wealthy benefactors with an interest in Gotham...some kind of court, maybe? Perhaps one consisting of owls? Just a thought
Even just pretending to go along with Black Mask's deal could be dangerous for Batman, because you can be sure that Sionis will use that footage for blackmail... When it comes to Black Mask, well I must first admit that I'm a huge fan of that character, hell I just watched *Batwoman* season 2 because Roman Sionis was the season's Big Bad (and Peter Outerbridge really nailed that role, it's a shame that the show sucked in general because this was a waste of a good casting + good performance + good adaptation). ... buuut, in *Absolute Batman* , I'm not too sure what to make of him. Since issue one, I've bet on Roman Sionis, who is usually the same age as Bruce and whose parents know the Waynes, should have been there at the Zoo during the shooting. But instead of being traumatized like Bruce, the mass shooting inspired him into creating gangs with animal faces (Maroni and Falcone talk about other groups led by him with guys with goats and giraffes masks). But if he really grew up in a city torn by war, then it wasn't Gotham, and that whole line of thinking goes up in smoke. Plus, you'd think Bruce would remember a kid named Roman Sionis going to his school, but...
What bothers me the most is the need to hide his face if he's really Roman Sionis, why go out of his way to let people like Bullock know his real name while hiding what he looks like? As a big Black Mask fanboy, I really, really hope that they won't pull an *Arkham Origins* again and have Joker be under the mask. I just find it a bit suspicious that after 3 issues, we haven't been given a single suspect that could realistically be Black Mask, and that we only got a single glimpse at Joker's face. Let's hope Snyder remembers that this is not exactly a nostalgic call-back for most fans ^^' I loved the hommage to *Batman Begins* in *Arrow* season 3, and the hommage to *TDKRises* in *Gotham* season 5, and the later in particular was risky, with Bane having been turned into a meme, the Talia reveal falling flat, etc... I'm impressed at how they made it work back then. But that's not what I was rambling about, soze! Black Mask FTW but if under the mask it's Joker or Penguin, it would really rustle my jimmies.
I noticed an emphasis on "seeing," but I'm not quite sure what to make of it. We have the "cat-eyes" and "eyes ahead" from Selina, Eddie's "oldest know riddle" about a blind man gaining sight, the "bats are not blind" poster, and Bruce's statement, "Look [bolded] where that got him" in reference to his father's death. The latter may not be meant to contribute to the theme, but the others seem quite purposeful. Summed-up, Selina seems to say, "Don't worry about what you can't see," while Eddie seems to say, "Worry about what you can't see (or don't know)." Perhaps this contradiction is supposed to foreshadow the conflict Bruce will be facing over how to proceed. Bruce's statement about his father and the bat poster both come near the end when Bruce agrees to take the deal. I think he's worried about losing his mother too, and that he's afraid this war is too big for him. Maybe next issue Selina's philosophy will embolden him to continue the fight. We'll see. I could be totally off-base in my interpretation, but I'm pretty sure these story elements are meant to add up to something.
Another thing I think not enough people are bringing up or just didn't pay attention to is the "Ceremonial Beacon" meant to honor the victims of the Gotham Zoo shooting, because I'd bet actual money that that is gonna become the Absolute universes Bat-Signal, possibly even next issue as a surprise turnaround on his deal with Black Mask, maybe even rallying Gotham to his side to fight back against Sionis and the Party Animals.
7:33 It hasn't been said outright in the story, but I feel like all of Bruce's resources in this story are solely based on his ingenuity, intellect, connections to Gotham through jobs, and... stealing stuff. I feel like Bruce has stolen a lot of things from the various city jobs he's had to build things like his suit or the Bat-Dumpster Truck. And im totally down with that.
If I had to write why he would consider it... suggest this is EVERYTHING he has. Bruce has thrown EVERY single thing he has at the Party Animals... and he's out. Years of setting up gear, equipment, chemicals, armor, and the like... and he's run out. He's still got equipment, but only to fight a few days left. He can't be Batman, long term. Thus, we see what Batman is without any money. He can be Batman... for a few weeks. I'm reminded of an arc from Robin where Tim found he and his family were broke, and on a mission with Batman... he sees the dollar worth. He asks Batman how much he spends a single night, and Batman admits... 2.1 million a day. For reference, that's over 750 million dollars A YEAR. How much has this Bruce spent and stole and built to be Batman for, what we know, a few months? It would be nice to actually have the veil removed and despite how invincible Absolute Batman is, it's all smoke and mirrors in how invincible he is. Huge fan of the Absolute Batman run, but it is something I wish Snyder did, cause he barely feels changed, money wise.
This would really shift the story in an interesting way with Batman eventually running out of resources. Also could help explain why Alfred was able to find out Bruce’s identity relatively easily. I do think Scott is building towards this with Alfred’s advance forward reference, I think Batman has been planning this for years and this is his (first) all out assault.
I love how close he is with his friends Eddy doesnt want bruce getting hurt, I think they either already know or will figure out hes batman, they just aren't gonna talk to him about it, until he tells them on his terms. I think they will be his bat family
I'm still not sold on this version of Batman yet , it feels like it's something out of the 90s Edgelord Grim Dark and over the top in this Absolute Universe that has me still on the fence if I want to read it or not
hello! Love the comic and your reviews. That said, you have pointed out my main issue with this series: being lower class doesn't look like it has affected him in the slightest in his efforts to become Batman. He learns, steals, or builds whatever he needs. The thing is, I don't have a problem with Bruce being hypercompetent and resourceful, but it needs to be balanced with the new economic situation. Maybe I missed something, but so far I haven't seen any real reason why he would need to take the deal. The only thing I can come up with is that perhaps he has spent everything he had fighting the party animals and he's now realizing that he may be able to win every battle, but he can't win a war of attrition. If that's the case, it would be really cool but they need to show it.
something i really appreciated about this issue is how Eddie talks about how he admires Bruce because of how he feels he’s the only person who’s able to match wits with him. this is something i hadn’t even considered until now and it has really tragic implications for their relationship in the mainline. such a great, bittersweet moment.
This Absolute Batman run is really impressing me with how engaging and fresh it's been to someone who usually stays away from comics due to bloated continuity. Bruce's friend watching movies together with him is my favorite panel for how endearing it is, and you know it's gonna be used as emotional leverage if things go sour in the future.
TBH, I don’t think Absolute Batman is living up to and committing to its premise. They removed Bruce’s wealth and resources, but then basically gave them all back again but under the excuse that he builds them all. He has so many bases and that Batmobile is ridiculous. Oh he just built 2 functioning rockets by himself with junk? If the end result is still the same then why even give him the handicap? Absolute Batman seems to just be naturally smarter and better physically built than classic Bruce. Balancing out his disadvantages of not being rich.
Well considering that the absolute Batmobile is basically a modified construction vehicle and the fact that he would steal some supplies for this, with those bases I’m expecting that they will be found and destroyed at some point. Classic Bruce was already smart enough to make various gadgets, and absolute Bruce is just as smart just lacks as much funding for it. We’re at issue 3, I’m not going to expect the difficulty to surface immediately (I’m expecting it to happen in issue 20 tbh)
Batman actually compromising, especially THIS Batman, who we all see how committed to the Batman idea (making his blend of MMA, the caves making a bat, making every projectile a bat, etc) was super surprising for me, and I love it. I really want to see how this will affect him and what he'll do
5:22 I feel like thats the real strength of Absolute Batman so far. Its very intense, I'm going with the moment and because of that I'm not thinking to hard about little inconsistencies or unexplained things. And at the same time, the core of these characters is so well written that im still engaged with the narrative even after having read it and thought about it. Its a perfect blend of over the top comic book silly and grounded characters.
My hottest take: What if they just always keep the universes seperate? Like, yes they're all in the same multiverse, and maybe Batman meets Batman in a quick story at some point, but that's it. There's no big messy event that resolves everything coming down the road and ten years from now people kind of look back and go "Remember Absolute?" while none of the characters have been even mentioned in five. What if instead there were just always these three, and only three, ongoing linear stories that anyone can just pick up by starting at issue one and reading. A bit off topic I admit. But it inspired the thought.
I would love it if at least some of the equipment Batman uses here looked like it's DIY repurposed stuff. Like, idk, if the batmobile looked like it had parts of different construction vehicles or something like that 😊
So excited to see where it goes! I’m antsy to see when/if the comics converge. Will they realize who darkseid is? There’s just so much and it’s exciting!
This series almost feels like the main universe villains only became villains because of Bruce's wealth. Also, though they may end up as villains in this continuity too, something more shocking would be to create villains out of main universe Batman's supporting cast. Imagine if Jim Gordon and Lucius Fox became the villains this time around?
I liked the issue overall, but I have a petty grudge over the treatment of Bibbo. Edit: I never want to hear the words 'Absolute Jonkler' ever again./j
I think the main thing we learned from this comic that we always kinda knew, Batman is a horrible friend 😂 We knew when he literarly had plans how to kill his best friend, but before we could have thought because they are adult friends, not people he grew up. No it doesnt matter how close you are, how much you help him, he is a manipulating, monster who doesnt care.
Regarding Joker being "in love" with Batman. 1-Do people think it is true? 2-Do people think he´s just bi? 3-Do people think that Batman could feel the same way?
It's usually headcanoned by fans due to how playful Joker is, but sometimes the hints are super blunt in being suggestive. I think back on some of the conversations Joker has with Batman in Arkham Asylum & City.
Something you should consider: This is a Darkseid Universe. Evil reigns here. And Gothams Rouges are not your average criminals. Batman Rouges are anarchist and always will be. In good universe, they would be fighting the law and order. In a Darkseid world, they fighting against tyranny and oppression. Batman: at his core, will always fight for people to be safe. In the Darkseid Universe, His greatest allies would be the same people who would be his enemy in a good universe.
Commissioner Harvey Bullock and mayoral candidate Bibbo Bibbowski were a surprise. Apparently Bibbo becomes a jerk without Superman's influence. Also the tiny little PLOP when Alfred hit the water got me harder than it probably should've. And was that Lucius running with Bruce in his arms on that title page? I'm still very here for Absolute Batman. I'm having a lot of fun with it as well as the others. But I'm very curious to see how they eventually weave Bruce, Diana, and Kal's worlds together (way down the road because I want them all to be on their own for a while). Even though I know this is all taking place on the same Earth, it all feels very much like different Earths.
If Batman taking the deal results in his mom dying due to the mayor's office being attacked and Bruce being too slow to respond, I'm gonna be not surprised but hella salty.
Unfortunately Sasha, it is now canon that in the mainline universe. Batman does make deals with criminals. Thanks to Tom King, he used the Penguin as an informant for top criminals and allowed him to rise to the top and become the criminal he is today
Batman has been using penguin for intel since the 2000s, but it’s not exactly a deal with a criminal, he uses an interrogates penguin for info, penguin was already a established top tier villain and has a establishment called the iceberg lounge.
@legoben98productions the last part you mentioned got retconned in the Penguin #6. Batman in flashbacks helped the Penguin become the criminal he is today apparently underestimating the Penguin and apparently beating up the Penguin as a ruse
Why are they called the "Party Animals?" Shouldn't they be wearing animal heads, or animal skulls? Guess they're not as on top of their branding game as Batman. (I knew Crypto was bad. Bruce will usurp them with his "Batcoin")
I'm sorry, we're not even mentioning the machine being built can only be described as an E. Nigma machine?! (I have not read the comic. It's probably only funny from that perspective. And I am easily amused.)
i am still super happy about absoleute comics setting not as good as new mravel ulimaite but A-superman and batma and wonder woman remind me why i love core DC trio even if the setting of this char is so differnt the core so well done
So far, this is my least favorite of the big 3 Absolute books, but it's still good. I think there's just more interesting directions being taken with Absolute Superman and Wonder Woman so far, but we still have more to go with this story.
Absolute Batman completely failed hook me, I feel he wastes all his best ideas. This Batman doesn’t feel like a underdog, we also doesn’t see him struggling with lack of resources so this dilemma of “imagine what you could do with money” means nothing to me. Also we barely started this story, I don’t even know this Bruce personality because he’s always wearing one of his two masks
Compared to the other 2 its disappointing BM has the least happening with its page count. Its taking forever to get to the point of this arc. Too much repetitive dialogue and aimless scenes
I really am enjoying Absolute Batman, except the noses. All the characters have Archie Comics noses. It's very odd when the rest of the art feels gritty!

I think it will be too, and it would add a nice personal touch to it for Bruce.

Genetic modification
Well, that explains how Waylon will become Killer Croc.
7:33 It hasn't been said outright in the story, but I feel like all of Bruce's resources in this story are solely based on his ingenuity, intellect, connections to Gotham through jobs, and... stealing stuff. My fav moment was Bruce's friends embracing him in the theatre. It's cool to see Bruce have friends at that age.
Are we gonna get a video of Absolute Superman #2?
I'm so late I'll combine it with 3.
If Martha gets injured or has a near death experience then it’s gg for Black Mask and the Party Animals
Catwoman is always welcome addition to the Batman lore! I love the premise of a blue collar city engineer Bruce Wayne it is an Interesting one.
If I had to write why he would consider it... suggest this is EVERYTHING he has. Bruce has thrown EVERY single thing he has at the Party Animals... and he's out. I actually think itd be cooler if his rouges remain more like the Batfamily of this universe.
I don't think Martha is gonna die in this first arc, it would be a waste of angst
Think how much more it could hurt if it happened later!
Right! The longer she stays, the deeper the cut. In fact I hope it is years before it happens. I want it to really hurt.
I'm still not sold on this version of Batman yet , it feels like it's something out of the 90s Edgelord Grim Dark and over the top in this Absolute Universe that has me still on the fence if I want to read it or not
Absolute Batman, absolute struggle... Also Selina's for is cute.
hello! Love the comic and your reviews. That said, you have pointed out my main issue with this series: being lower class doesn't look like it has affected him in the slightest in his efforts to become Batman. The only thing I can come up with is that perhaps he has spent everything he had fighting the party animals and he's now realizing that he may be able to win every battle, but he can't win a war of attrition. I'm not really into the absolute universe, but I do really enjoy watching your videos about them.
Love this take on batman...
Also are you using a new camera lens? Video looks great!
That Panel-To-Panel features looks really cool! 😎
5:22 I feel like thats the real strength of Absolute Batman so far. And at the same time, the core of these characters is so well written that im still engaged with the narrative even after having read it and thought about it. Why does he even need the money when he can just run Black Mask over in the Battruck?
My hottest take: What if they just always keep the universes seperate?
Like, yes they're all in the same multiverse, and maybe Batman meets Batman in a quick story at some point, but that's it.
There's no big messy event that resolves everything coming down the road and ten years from now people kind of look back and go "Remember Absolute?" while none of the characters have been even mentioned in five.
What if instead there were just always these three, and only three, ongoing linear stories that anyone can just pick up by starting at issue one and reading.
A bit off topic I admit. But it inspired the thought.

Did Batman actually just turn a 600 ton industrial dump truck into the world's largest Indy race car?
Love Sasha describing shipping with "I don't make the rules - I just live in the zoo."
Absolute batman just keep getting better and better
The money feels empty when this Batman does seem to struggle with being working class, like lack of resources or work/life balance
I may actually love explosive, over-the-top, Bull Dozer Batman. Reading this run makes me feel like a little kid playing with action figures.
You hear that, Nightwing? In this universe, Batman is the one with the *DUMP TRUCK.* 🤣😂😅😆😁😄
(Someone had to say it)
I think they will throw a curve ball by him taking the deal to really distance him from the main stream Batman.
They have to bring the BAT'leth back. I think it was only seen in one or two panels because, you know, lawyers.
Nice analysis
I liked the issue overall, but I have a petty grudge over the treatment of Bibbo.
Edit: I never want to hear the words 'Absolute Jonkler' ever again./j
This is what happens when Superman is off the grid, lol.

It was not Bibbo's day this issue!
To me the palace burning is not Batman. Its darkseid face looking at Bruce suffering.
If Batman taking the deal results in his mom dying due to the mayor's office being attacked and Bruce being too slow to respond, I'm gonna be not surprised but hella salty.
I want absolute Bane to be a small guy that can still absolutely wreck Batman.
@ oh the penguin title, I honestly didn’t know about it, I’m not sure if it’s going to be a permanent thing or if it’s just for that title tbh
Thanks again for another great review also please more superman 's girlfriend lois lane 😂😂
Lol, there will always be time for more Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane.
Absolute Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane? @@CasuallyComics
Why are they called the "Party Animals?" Shouldn't they be wearing animal heads, or animal skulls? Guess they're not as on top of their branding game as Batman. (I knew Crypto was bad. Bruce will usurp them with his "Batcoin")
Lol Bruce and Eddie lure them out by launching a rival coin.
@@CasuallyComics Don't tell Harvey - best to keep him away from all coins.
I thought it said in issue 2 they were wearing ape skulls?
@ladeladel3376 Did they? That makes sense then.
I'm sorry, we're not even mentioning the machine being built can only be described as an E. Nigma machine?!
(I have not read the comic. It's probably only funny from that perspective. And I am easily amused.)
i am still super happy about absoleute comics setting
not as good as new mravel ulimaite
but A-superman and batma and wonder woman remind me why i love core DC trio even if the setting of this char is so differnt the core so well done
I felt dc owes me $5. I actually skipped ultimate Spider-Man because it was an all talk issue but this was same. Not 1 full Batman scene in the book.
So far, this is my least favorite of the big 3 Absolute books, but it's still good. I think there's just more interesting directions being taken with Absolute Superman and Wonder Woman so far, but we still have more to go with this story.
Since the finale just dropped today, Do you think you might take a look at the team fortress two comics?
I never was (comment for the algorithm)
reply for the algorithm
Still cool.
I want an Absolute Bratman. 🦇💅
7:36 Bruce came in like a wrecking ball
He never hit so hard in love
....i'm sorry :P
Absolute Batman completely failed hook me, I feel he wastes all his best ideas. This Batman doesn’t feel like a underdog, we also doesn’t see him struggling with lack of resources so this dilemma of “imagine what you could do with money” means nothing to me. Also we barely started this story, I don’t even know this Bruce personality because he’s always wearing one of his two masks
Is black mask joker? Like arkham origins
Bat brick
Absolute Brickman
With his brick up bat bulldoze
Nope. not "in" -- "all" or otherwise. Also, what with all those stubby, little Swamp Thing noses everyone has?
