The Summit easily - sounds sooo nice
I just love how much joy is clearly being had in these videos! I'm glad to see this channel take 'gear content' in a direction other than your typical reviews/analysis. More like this please!
'joy' is indeed the word, Alex…Just got my Osmose and I'm loving it…Truly moving playing some of the sounds.
Your Hydrasynth has its mod wheel set halfway in rounds 1-3, so those patches are likely being mangled with 50% vibrato (the default mod wheel setting for most factory patches).
it sounded ropey!!
Ha ha, oops.
Glad someone else noticed this too. Those first few patches sound awfully sea-sick!
The guys seemed high, so he never noticed.
Numpties! OMG - thought this might be helpful - it wasn't...
Novation Summit just sounds so lush, definitely next on my purchase list
All three of these guys are absolute monsters on keys!!!
Great video! Mike and Dan are such fun people and good players. My vote goes Summit here.
Hydrasynth is a cool synt but the Summit is a class of its own 😃
Hydra is capable of all the sounds the Summit made here really
Summit costs $500 more.
@@Ori0n1975 Note, it's a top of the line Hydra, more inline with Summit by polyphony and with large pAT keyboard. It's more expensive than Summit, at least in Europe.
The Reverb on the first patch on the Summit, absolutely delicious sounding stuff!
Novation has won it for me in terms of richness of sound. Great job gentleman. 💪🏻
I bought a Novation Peak and fell in love with the synth. I’ve had a Novation Summit for a few weeks now. You have to be there to believe it; the sound of the Peak is awesome, but the Summit is on another level. It’s the first time a piece of gear has brought me to tears.
Wow this was amazing! Both synths have so many great sounds. The jam session was dope!
YES!! More jams with 2 or more people please! That was amazing and shows two synth players can have a lot of fun jamming together!
Loving the Summit! 🙌🏽 The guy playing it is mad, Hydra was cool on R3-4 too
I really thought the Hydrasynth was going to win this hands down but as fara as I am concerned the Novation had the best sound. Something about the deep of the sound really impressed me.
UA-cam algorithms don't do either justice I walked into the store and was blown away sounded so much better
The Hydrasynth is praised for it's versatility and keybed. Not it's sound. Which is some of the worst out there. It simply doesn't have the voices, filters or otherwise to get rid of it's characteristic sound. Once you hear it - you have to get rid of it. As it's literally present in everything it does.
On the other hand, Novation like certain other legacy brands - speak for themselves in the beautiful sound.
@@ErraticFaith Very well said!
@@ErraticFaithAgreed, I sold my Hydrasynth because of that.
Your right, it has a tonal character that's hard to like. I fooking hated it.
Didn't think much of its digital filters, LPF was ok but not the others.
Lots of digital waveforms to choose, but again, only a couple of useful and usable ones, the rest where just weird crap and not of any use.
Also a hard tonal character to fit into a mix.
It's got some nice reverbs and delays and a very good ARP, but the sounds always sounds to metalic and digital for my taste.
And if I'm honest, too much menu diving, you have to spend a lot of time in the screens.
More videos of these guys please. Thanks.
I'm really enjoying these battles.
We need more battles of this guys haha awesome content guys
I like this series 😭great vid man this was excellent
I love these type of videos! My current fav synths too
That HydraSynth should have been a Dexibell. That novation sound is just too darn good! Fun!
I love these “battles”…so cool to hear how different players interpret these instruments with literally no time to prep. Please keep these videos coming, Jack.
I have lusted after both these synths. The ribbon controller is a huge selling point for me on the Hydra but the Summit has such a huge and somewhat more traditional sound. It's the Summit for me...
The hydra lacks a certain ‘weight’ in the notes, it’s so versatile, best used for the crispy icing on top more then a main sound
These patch battle videos are great. tbh i'll watch anything with Mike and Dan
Love these videos!
Aaaaaand you see the difference when a synth has true analog components like filters. Summit sounded so much beefier. I've owned both the Peak and Hydra and they're both great, but the Peak/Summit is definitely more immediately rich, while Hydra has more overall sound design possiblities
At 1:50 i felt right back playing with friends in high school with those big smiles and that enthusiasm. Adertons Synths has the best product demo videos without seemingly even trying. Great work.
These are the best.. I want them to be longer!!!
Summit. All the way
Agreed. I own both, but my Hydra is on sale.
I could watch hundreds of these
Always check your mod wheel before playing. :)
THIS IS AWESOME! THXXXX
novation it is
I’ve got the Summit not for 2 months I think and had already the Hydrasynth desktop.
I think a perfect combination.
But the Summit is just soooo awesome in his sound and warm and 🤗🤗
Another one, TY!
Love to see it where they race to MAKE a patch in these categories and see which is easier/more intuitive.
I have both.
The Summit hands down is by far quicker to make sounds on.
No menu diving unless you want to get deep into heavy modulation.
Everything is immediate and right on the panel.
Hydrasynth requires a lot of different menus and pages to do that.
Very different synthesizers.
The Hydrasynth is a nice synth for sound design, however I absolutely hate the amount if time it takes on it.
You can also spend that long on it that you forget what you started out doing lol and then after 3 hours thinking "hold on...how did I end up here":) and you've got nothing done.
Love my hydrasynth deluxe. If you have ever played with an intellijel shapeshifter, it kind of reminds me of it. But polyphonic, and like 4 shapeshifter engines. And with poly aftertouch. It’s insane
A list of the presets used would be great for us to look for them if we have one the synths!! Great battle!
Over head cam! Front fixed cam!! Floating free cam!!! Love it!!!!
LOVED this video! All three guys are excellent for this concept. Love the energy. Synths: I’m biased. HydraSynth all day! But I’m positive Novation has some beautiful patches. However, hands on with the HydraSynth is mind blowing.
I'm saving for a Hydrasynth so probably biased too but I don't think this showcased the Hydrasynths strengths
What a combo. I would take both of them. I already have a Hydrasynth and love it. When I was looking it came down between these two. The price point of the Hydra swayed me for what you're getting.
Sounds like icepicks in my spine. Guess I’m old.
this is quality youtube content, synth fan or not
I love the clunkiness of your rhythm sound in the final jam, Dan! I've liked both your rhythms of this and the previous jam! :)
Always entertaining when these guys meet in a room with keyboards!
Love these battles. Hydrasynth.
My goodness. Seeing that these two synths are on my short list (along with some VCO offerings), this just shows how good they both are! Maybe the Hydrasynth with the Peak, or the Summit with the Hydrasynth module? All I know is that I want some sort of aftertouch on my next board.
Hydrasynth is just ridiculous with the aftertouch. I highly recommend it. I love it.
I am a hydrasynth owner I've had the keyboard now for two years and it is a beast!!! I was looking at getting a new scent for my studio I researched for at least a year and hands-down the ASM is the King !!! In 15 to 20 years it's probably going to be one of those keyboards everybody wants to have
Damn, Dan took me to space church with that last one!
Quality. Notation more solid sonic footing
The aftertouch is very well adjustable.
Seeing the size of the Hydra Deluxe, I’m glad I got the smaller original. The Summit is low enough profile to sit in the pullout drawer of my studio desk as main controller.
I love the hydras keybed, and touch strip. The sounds from that synth, not so much.
I think with proper tweaking the hydra can take you places very hard to go with other instruments. I also think that the novation just sounds thicker and richer as it is. These videos are awesome but you got to give the guys at least two or three minutes to edit their patches better.
They are not suppose to edit the patches..... rule of the game
Or a patch from scratch with a 10 minute limit?
I totally agree with you. That hydra is unreal. He didn’t even get to the more interesting patches
I wanted both, but got a Hydra. With that and Montage and Deepmind 12 I have a crazy amount of possibilities. I have done all my albums with these and I am so in love with them all.
@@OswaldoVonSchnoobenstein montage is actually the key word here. great choice.
I love these things because they help me hear boards I’ve not got to use yet! I will say, I’ve been eyeing that Hydrasynth but man does that Summit sound like butter!!!! 🧈
Before watching I was betting on Hydrasynth, but I was really shocked how big the Novation Summit sounded!
Maybe with hydrasynth you can dive deeper and make more complex sounds, but the winner of sound for me is surprisingly the Summit!
Have to say the Novation for me, sounds richer and more vibrant , but the HydraSynth looks so flexible.
The hydrasynth has no analog filters but from my personal experience, a quick trip to voice settings to setup a tad of pitch drift and analog mode, along with some poly aftertouch and some ribbon settings, it can come alive in a wonderful way that’s absolutely comparable to the time ive spent demoing the peak/summit.
@@nebulance4289 nice, always liked it
Summit for me
Summit absolutely smoked the Hydrasynth IMO.
It's literally the player. Swap the guys around and you'd think the opposite.
@@poison7512 could be, that dude was 🔥
Summit 💯. What a sound!
I went back and forth over whether I wanted a Hydra or a Peak recently, and i am glad I went with the Peak. The hydra sounds thin, comparatively speaking.. but this is because the Peak has that analog filter adding a good bit of warmth. But, I still want a hydra desktop module to play around with. Looks fun and with crazy possibilities
Whoa!
The summit
Need subtitles.
Love both of those synths.
I still have never heard a patch on the Hydra that I love…..
Ah, the mod wheel on the Hydra was at almost 50% the whole time -- explains the huge vibrato 😅
6:50 - Monkey Island vibes!
I have the desktop version of the novation Summit, which is the Peak. Obviously for this challenge, they could not do any “tweaking.” To really appreciate the Novation, knob and fader tweaking is the secret sauce. Sounds are absolutely supreme when you utilize all of the knobs and faders. It is meant to be played with, not treated like a “preset” board…even though there are great presets.
Peak & Summit are different. For starters, Summit is two-part, 16-voice.
@@vaiman7777 the summit is basically two peaks with a keyboard.
@@teddybearasaurus I know, I had one. It's like saying a Prophet 5 desktop is basically a Prophet 10. It's not, neither is Peak.
novation for me
I bought both, and they complement one another nicely. To be fair, slamming through presets doesn't do the Hydra justice. So much of the magic of the factory presets is in the macros, and you often don't notice the amazing gems that are there until you dive in deeper.
I've also been using the Hydra to teach my 13-year-old synthesis. The visualizations, particularly of the envelopes, really help things click for him.
Summit for sure - it's freakin' great
I had to make the decision between Hydra and Summit/Peak and opted for the Peak in the end. This battle ressures my choice as the Novation Synth just sounds that tad bit better, warmer and more "analog" I am super happy with the Peak and even though Hydra has a little more to offer feature and modulation wise it needs a looong time and before you run out of interesting patch ideas for the Peak or Summit. (also the Peak and Summit have had gread updates in the past and folks at Novation really seem to care about their product, the software/web based librarian and wavetable creator are also a breeze to use!)
So the winner was and still are Peak and Summit for me.
Good choice. I have both Summit (since its release) and bought a Hydra recently. But right after I had it connected in my (very well equipped synth) studio, I did regret my purchase. The Hydra sounds ok, but in no way as good as the Summit. UA-cam is not the best channel to demonstrate that. If you only own a Hydra, that is a good choice. But if you have more than 20 hardware synths like me, the Hydra is about the worst in my entire collection...
That guy looked like he didn’t know the hydrasynth at all. I believe that’s the point of this video, but if you judged the hydrasynth off this…. I kinda wish the other guy was on the Hydra 🤷🏾
Hydra sounds bad natively and requires, as you'd expect, a fair amount of dialing to get to where you want to go. The hidden con if you like, of so much breadth of capability. The problem is that it can hinder you creatively if you're wanting something with a sweet spot and initial musicality. Combine that with its 'ok' sound and you're rapidly looking at something that is a PolyAT gimick. Which honestly most musicians (capable players) won't use all that much beyond novelty. Sometimes too much complexity is exactly that.
That doesn't mean it isn't capable. It's just a lot of busy work for what other hardware synths can do with a fraction of the tinkering. With what Summit/Peak have under the hood you'd expect them to be better sonically in many instances and musically they are more adept out the gate. With the advent of Osmose - which is a vastly more expressive and superior keybed; I'd likely not go for Hydra if I was shopping now. But that doesn't mean it's a bad buy. There's so much out there now.
This is a daft test. Give them 30 minutes to pick their favourite patches in each category. 60 seconds isn't enough time to explore each sound.
You have a point, but as jack says at the beginning of the video, this is how it would happen if you walked into the shop. You won't get 30 minutes per patch per synth unless you make an appointment and the shop are prepared to give you that much time.
I rather think that's the point. Silliness abounds. 😂
Summit outclasses the Hydrasynth with it's sheer tone. Hydra comes off plasticky many times and it's envelopes have soft attacks.
The wildcard for the Hydrasynth sounds like Sunday Service in space lol
Nice
Unfortunately, Dan appears to have inadvertently left the mod wheel up on the Hydrasynth for the first three patches, so his sounds were somewhat...wobbly. Not criticizing, I've done this more times than I can count, but it's still a bit unfortunate for a comparison.
was he not using his ears!
I have both of these synths, they complement one another quite well. When I have a classic analog sound I want to recreate, the Summit is my go-to. With close to knob-per-function on the controls, it's super fast to dial it in, and it is flexible enough to emulate pretty much any subtractive analog sound you can think of.
But for pure flexibility and creativity, the Hydrasynth is it. 32 mod matrix slots where you can route pretty much anything to anything, those amazing mutators, a usable wavetable oscillator source (unlike the Summit), it can do ANYTHING. Just not quite as quickly as you can do it on the Summit.
The Summit also has that GORGEOUS reverb, the best I've ever heard on a synth. The Hydrasynth reverb is...usable. The Summit's filters are analog, with an excellent, warm drive. Hydrasynth's digital filters also have drive, but the harmonics just aren't as warm and enveloping as the Summit.
Quite enjoyed your taking on these. Would you please elaborate?
@@RealmOfMelinoe Check out my UA-cam channel, I have videos there going into much detail.
Love the Hydra. Between that, the Montage and Deepmind 12, all my albums sound amazing to me.
Hmm. Ich würde liebend gerne mit Mike Patrick spielen, seine Musik groovt einfach sofort. Und offenbar ist sein Synth intuitiver zu bedienen. Sehr cool.
1< Summit 2< Summit 3< Summit 4 =Draw 5< Hydrasynth 🙂
Next time, it would be cool to see the players change seats and repeat.
Depending on what you want to do with the synth. Hydra is so flexible and someone with patience and editing skill can get more out of it. But, Summit is supremely smooth, easy to access, filter is better, reverb is second to none, and even the chorus/delay are good and have dedicated controls.
Either one is a winner. I have Hydrasynth, but I also want a Summit. They were both on my shortlist, but the price of the hyrdra won out. I still want a Summit.
Novation and by a lot.
I have both synths
Mike is simply a better musician no matter what is in front of him. No one asks a chef what type of pan was used to make an omelette. No one asks an author if the book was typed on a MacBook or PC.
Everyone knows that to write a REAL book you’ve gotta go analogue! If you didn’t write it by hand on sheets of self rolled vellum are you really writing?
What’s with the weird panning on the bass patch on the Hydra Synth?
How do you hear that sound an NOT immediately reach for the mod wheel?
Novation for me
I'm fortunate enough to own both, but if one had to go it would be the Summit. For me the workflow on the Hydrasynth is just bang on the money!
I do love what the ASM is trying to do .. but feel they tried a bit too hard ... the Summit feels more finished and dare I say more usable..
It’s ok to be wrong 😂
Hydra is exactly what it needs to be as is. All my albums use it and it's just an amazing synth. They nailed it.
I have both the Summit (since its release) and a Hydra (2 months) To me it's very simple. I'm selling the Hydra again. (I had my doubts even before buying, but I gave it a try)
That is because the Hydra sounds 'distant' or better said not in your face. And for me personally that is a basic feature that every synth should have. Yes, the Hydra has got some nice features, but sound wise, it can't keep up with the Summit. Which doesn't mean the Hydra sounds bad. But not as good as the Summit. 🙂
IVE GOT BOTH OF THESE AND LOVE BOTH OF THEM. I WOULDNT WANT TO PICK JUST ONE
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Novation ❤
The very first patch on the Hydrasynth is called Sawpressive, and would possibly have been a better choice! Also, Dan seems to have the mod wheel halfway up on the first sound, and it gives the sound way too much vibrato - don't know if that was intentional or not 🙂
I bought both when they came out and got rid of the Peak but kept the Hydra... I may have decided the other way if all I had to go on was this video - it must be hard to find a cracking patch in just the minute they have. Also, as Jack mentioned, the keybed of the Hydra takes some getting used to.
Love seeing these shootouts though - keep 'em coming!
they really need 2mins
Mike channelling Saint Saens
Novation Summit All day
Hilarious and Fun. I learned almost nothing and don't even care!
Hydra just about pipped it but Summit held its head up
Novation!!!!
