Since you said you didn't have much experience with towns and didn't mention it in your brief talk about them, I'd like to highlight the fact that Farming Villages (or Fishing Villages if they're coastal) send all the food they produce towards the city (or cities) they are connected to. Which means they don't grow any of their own pop, instead boosting the pop of a city.
Also, since town connection is a bit weird, the way it works is that it needs to have a direct road connection that does _not_ pass through any other settlement. For example, for the purpose of shipping food to Baak', Coba would be unable to do so as Xunantunich is between it and Baak' roadwise.

LOL good catch. tbh i totally forgot that aspect of the building and my monkey brain just clicks whatever seems like has the best yields. However, interestingly, that tile also got +5 science, so maybe that tile also counted as vegetation? Not sure tbh
