I believe partially because there was a very popular site among comic book fans named Superdickery that was just these silver age scenes of Superman being a dick to Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. Pretty much every comic book nerd from early to mid '00s knew if that site.
I love that the Superman episode went full Silver Age and still had a reference to Dark Knight Returns, aka the start of the Dark Age. Its so wild how the shots of Bats in that iconic armor did not stick out like a sore thumb.
We all know how it would play out. Lois would woo him, marry him, and he'd find out his wedding ring caused irreversible rusting and die, or something similar. It would end with Lois dressed in black, sobbing into a hankerchief, and bemoaning how she never knew she could "fall in love... with a robot!"
They really made an entire episode based on Superdickery and actually made it work in-universe. God, I love this show. I hope you get the chance to do a full episode breakdown on the actual Superman TBATB episode cus it's hilarious and chock-filled with references.
In the episode, Jimmy even says that Superman is acting like a "Superdi--" before being cut off. (Obviously he wouldn't be able to say the whole thing in a children's cartoon.) They were definitely referencing the (now defunct) Superdickery website.
@@Derp-rz1nn When I left this comment, the video hadn't been out long enough for me to watch it. I assumed from the title and the first few seconds that it would be about that episode. My favorite part is after the BTBAB clip it cuts back to Lois where she just blankly stares at Batman and says "I have no idea what he was talking about." It's just the perfect delivery and animation for that "who me? I would never do something so crazy as try to make him fall in love with me hahaha..." vibe
Best part of that episode is when Jimmy reminisces on his good times with Superman, and it flashed back to him as a Kaiju destroying the city and Superman vowing to destroy him
Between Silver Age Lois’ marriage schemes and Silver Age Superman’s blatant gaslighting of Lois (while also keeping a stalker’s shrine of her at the Fortress of Solitude), it’s amazing that ANY comics fan would have been able to root for them as a couple.
The period of time of the silver age comics. Was during a transition period for gender roles. Between the old idea of defined jobs for each gender and the more modern idea that gender isn't a factor of they should do a job or not. As the adoption of household appliances and moving to suburban life style. Woman raised to follow the tradition life style is no longer possible, but somehow wants to fulfill the roll they were brought up to take. This period of roll uncertainty, actually created a lot of sexist tropes. Such as the woman's job is to please the husband, and the ditzy behavior to show they are not as smart as the man.
Superman and Lana actually dated in the last years of the pre crisis continuity. They started dating on Action Comics issue 541, although Lana started showing interest on Clark Kent in Superman issue 380. They actually seemed to have a happy and lovely relationship, which can be seen in Action Comics issues 542, 543, 544, 556, 559 and 562 and Superman issues 383, 388, 390, 401, 403, 410, 412 and 413 and the 1986 Lois Lane miniseries also showing them having a far more healthier relationship than with Lois. It was an interesting time period.
I see Superman's dilemma here as similar to Tarzan in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. He never wanted to go back to England to claim his title as Lord Greystoke because he wouldn't be special in England. He'd just be a plain, old Lord. He couldn't be Jane's hero in England, so he stayed in Africa where he could be the super hero that rescues her from danger.
"Superman's crusade against crime and injustice is too important to be spoiled by a mere scoop" Quick, someone send this panel to Brian Michael Bendis!
I do think its interesting how one of the shows very few appearances of Superman in Batman: Brave and the Bold had Superman presented as a jerk and later dictator because he was being exposed to Red Kryptonite from Lois and Jimmy's gits they received secretly by Lex Luthor. Even though Im very much not a fan of whenever writers make Superman evil or a dictator, I will say this show's take on an evil Superman is actually kinda funny since they don't take the concept too seriously and actually have fun with it making Superman a toxic troll which is funny 😂
Well, "Evil Superman" from _Superman III_ wasn't that evil, he was just a prick and a drunk. They even thought of using the Leaning Tower of Pisa gag in _Superman II_ when he was in love and went to the tropics to get her some food.
Clark should have had a heart-to-heart with Steve Trevor about living with a more powerful partner. Steve seemed to be happy enough with Diana fighting for our rights, in her satin tights.
Not true. Silver age Wonder Woman is full of Steve Trevor trying to gaslight and control Diana. Like every third issue is him saying "if you fail to achieve this arbitrary goal I have just set then that means you must marry me, give up being a superhero, and make my dinner".
The image of Supes just trashing his "Lois Room" _in front of Lana_ just to avoid having an argument is incredibly amusing to me 😄 Y'know, the more you cover these, the more I am becoming genuinely surprised that DC didn't try to do a Superman sitcom in the vein of Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie back in the day now, what with them having *so many ideas* for all the wacky ways Lois and Lana could inject themselves into his life.
Well, yeah, that was much sadder than I was expecting. Goofiness and period appropriate conflict aside. This sort of internalised self loathing themes are a timeless sort of conflict. Also, please cover the one with king superman and his terrible crown XD
Robot Clark reading Lois mind and then shutting her down in his mind with a "hum, actually I'm a robot" is the funniest most silver age thing I have ever seen.
It would have been interesting if he'd used a robot to take the place of Clark Kent when he left the Earth during _Supergirl_ and returned for _Superman IV._
9:24 Where are all of these petty crooks getting Kryptonite? I thought it was still relatively hard to come by in the Silver Age, though the Earth was lousy with it.
Back when the Superman franchise could support two spin-off comic books: _Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane_ and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. The former ran for over 16 years and the later for nearly 20 years.
This is such a great example of internalized misogyny. Love that you highlighted it. Really enjoying the Super-Lana spotlight. I'm more and more convinced that she's got a lot of potential, even if the writers aren't interested in using her fully.
I was waiting for The Brave and the Bold to make a Superman team up episode for so long, especially being the most obvious team up for them to do, and we had to wait for 3 seasons for it. Like, man did they made us wait, but it was worth it.
How much of the Silver Age was all non canon imagery or "impossible" stories? Did the writers just hate building canon so much back then they felt the need to make every comic a fake what if story?
While continuity wasn't really a top priority for them back then(they just wrote as things went along, taking an episodic approach), they didn't want to make too big of changes to the canon that would affect long-term story telling If they wanted to have fun with a story without disrupting too much of "main canon", they'd just make an 'imaginary/fake' story, a pseudo-What If...? That way, they wouldn't affect the 'main canon.' It's like _Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow_ by Alan Moore, another 'imaginary story' that told the end of the Pre-Crisis Earth-1 Superman. This was before CoIE was published and pre-Crisis Earth-1 Superman was rebooted into post-Crisis New Earth Superman.

I like that you're putting the onus on HIM when that's not how the story frames it -- he's trying to deal with his own feelings of inadequacy without letting it hurt their marriage, but SHE decides that their marriage couldn't survive her superiority to him, then SHE declares that she is leaving. He tries desperately to stop her, but she refuses to be swayed and in the end (as the narrator states) he "obeys" her and accepts her reasoning, internalizing her contempt for him. SHE is the one who calls all the shots and leaves him.
With the early appearance of Lois and the Clark Robot, I'm surprised neither ended up playing a bigger role. (I wish they had had their own concurrent storyline) It's interesting that aside from the ensuing storyline, the whole thing happened in the first place because Superman couldn't be with someone who was powerless/helpless. So the rest of the story is like a monkey's paw tale with the ultimate point that Superman is doomed when it comes to romance either way, whether his wife is powerless or powerful.
Literally, if she wasn't around Metropolis would have been destroyed. She isnt saving him, she is dooming the world to him inevitably dying to green kryptonite or ending it himself after another red one
Remember kids;"warner bros didn't start hating and abusing all their intellectual properties with zaslav". And this show, still living proof(g.o.a.t.)!
Idk why Superman dosent feel pride for a hero he was responsible in creating, its not like Lana was a vigilante helping people as a hero berfore the powers. Instead of feelinf insecure he should be Proud that he chose sucha good candiDATE for this potion
I like to imagine Robot Clark spent the whole wedding like “Lois doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT” “Jimmy doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT” “The priest doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT” “That man I see out the window crossing the street doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT”

Sad thing is this story holds more truth than most people want to admit. I've seen a lot of relationships ruined by a dynamic change like that.
That opening joke made me cackle, like straight up cackle!
Watch Brave and the Bold it's worth it. Absolutely hilarious and action packed with a lot of heart.
Always thought Kryptonite was supposed to be rare, but in that issue, it's all over the place.
That panel of the robot thinking just takes me all the way out!
Love the ominous music and zoom in when wondering whether this is the first time Superman's erased Lana's memories.
Working that red wig....ode to Lana Lang?
Idk why Superman dosent feel pride for a hero he was responsible in creating, its not like Lana was a vigilante helping people as a hero berfore the powers. Instead of feelinf insecure he should be Proud that he chose sucha good candiDATE for this potion
The only problem with dating hero is that neither of you will have time to be intimate because you'll be to busy saving people

Superman’s fists and laser eye may break bones and burn skin, but his words cuts deep, very very deep since he rarely lies.
I’m just hearing Robot Clark with a Dalek voice.
I like to imagine Robot Clark spent the whole wedding like
“Lois doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT”
“Jimmy doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT”
“The priest doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT”
“That man I see out the window crossing the street doesn’t know that I am… A ROBOT”
