I used to do that, when I was in the Navy and had a really stressful day, I would grab a small hook and spool of thread and it helped me to calm down. It's hard to crochet something that small when you are angry.
You are insane, this is insane. Don't get me wrong I'm jealous of your talent and skill but lord I can barely count my stitches on regular size crochet. Go You! I love watching miniatures videos
I’ve been crocheting for 50 years, always in the finest threads. I’m also a dollhouse miniaturist (1:12 scale) and recommend using either cotton or silk threads, as we do need the drape in what we make in miniature.
Will you look at that! I used crochet hooks of that size to embroider handkerchiefs with crochet lace - a very long time ago-, I still have all of the hooks I used 40 years ago, because I'm kind of a hoarder with crafting tools. The smallest size I ever used was 0.6mm, that was perfect for lace. But I never thought to use them for granny squares! Very cute! This I have to try, I just bought a neck lamp for knitting, that will come in handy for this.
Ooh I love when the crafting hoarding pays off haha - everything is always useful again one day! Glad I'm not the only one 😅 Hope you enjoy making mini granny squares - it's very addictive! ❤️
Your camera is very sharp and clear. Most people when they try to crochet in front of us it gets very fuzzy so congratulations on such a great clear picture. I have bad eyesight so I have started sticking my iPhone in front of my shirt with the flashlight on. It really helps especially on these days for the clouds are moving in and out in and out in and out.
did I need a tutorial on this? no.. am I ever going to do this? no... did I still watch this all the way through? absolutely! and I loved it! its satisfying to watch I just don't have the patience to do it myself.
So many people make "magic rings" look so complicated. Just start with a loop like you would any other time you start a chain, but instead of pulling the first loop tight around your hook, just leave it more open. Just keep working your stitches in that loop for the first round, then pull the tail tight. That's all you really need to do.
This is just the easiest method I've found that allows me to get nice tight stitches, so I thought it worth sharing. I use your method with regular yarn but I've found working with thread is too fiddly to just work into a loop. Everyone is welcome to research their own methods though and find what suits them most 😊
that doesn't really give me the look that i want with regular yarn though. i dislike the hole that that method leaves and the magic circle isn't too difficult for me anymore
I had to chuckle at your warnings about thin hooks. I was a quilter for many years and a thimble on one or many fingers was essential for protection. Lovely video, and good basic how to get started.
Only thing different I do is going over only 1 thread & I go over the other 1 on the other side so it’s not so thick. Probably because I’m 70 & a perfectionist. I like your work. It’s been a while & you’re giving me the desire to get back to it. Thank you.
when my Grandmother died i got her tiny crochet hook and we got to see the edging she did for pillow cases made out of sewing thread. It's really fun to crochet with thread and to do patterns like doilies soooo tiny with thread, Glad youtud recommended you to me Today!!!!!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment! 😊 My mum also has some of my grandma's doilies she made when she was younger and they're so lovely! Such fine work. ❤️
I just call it crochet. My mum, Nana and I make table clothes with very fine thread. My mum will be making my wedding dress with size 30 crochet thread. I find it more fun that crocheting with wool. Thanks for the tutorial ❤
I am just now trying to pick this up. I have knitted and crocheted for over 50 years. I prefer knitting. I am so grateful for your tutorial. So I am off for an adventure into micro crochet. Thank you.
Wonderful tutorial! I've recently gotten back into crochet after a *gasp* 25 year hiatus, and find that I'm more drawn to finer versions of it, like lace and mini-amigurumi and now your darling micro granny squares. How adorable! Looking forward to more tutorials of your micro creations!
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I've been interested in micro crochet for a while for earring and other jewellery-making. It is so wonderful to find a kiwi crochet channel! Also low key loving your plants 🥰
Outstanding! Most of us would be hard pressed to speak while executing complex maneuvering. You’re cool as a cucumber and do a marvelous job of explaining important tips. Wonder of wonders. Thank you…
I’m an experienced granny square maker. I’m following your video and have completed the first round. I’m using craft thread because I ordered it by mistake but it has many colors! I’m pretty sure my first round is the same size as your whole earring. I’m thinking that since I first started crocheting I’ve been trying to crochet loosely. Now I’m learning to tighten up! Your magic ring method is magical! Thanks
Re: alternative threads. You might have better luck finding it online than in person but i find that tatting thread works well for micro crochet and does come as thin as sewing thread. The kind i like and that is fairly popular with tatting is by a company called Lizbeth. Its mercerized cotton so no fluff, has good sheen, is very durable and holds up well. Aunt Lydias crochet thread is a good one to look out for. Also Mercerized cotton is almost on par with synthetics when it comes to durability and ive gotta say having used sythetics vs cotton i really prefer cotton for crocheting tiny things
I really enjoyed your tips for micro mini materials...going out to purchase the Gutermann top stitching thread kit at Joann Fabric with my 50% off coupon today! I'm working on a mini gnome with a Christmas tree hat for my son using 10 thread and will be making the micro mini ornaments for the tree decorations! I have one suggestion for you is to try the "invisible weave" for your last stitches...it makes them neater and more secure. Thank you!!!
I'm not great at crochet but have been able to do it since school, us Boomers didn't get a choice, boys did wood and metalwork and technical drawing and girls had to do home economics (cooking etc.) and needle work, sewing, knitting and everything related to that like embroidery and crochet. So its something I do while watching UA-cam and as I am into miniatures I started getting smaller hooks and using embroidery floss to make things for dioramas etc. I will basically crochet anything, as I find it really relaxing but definitely prefer small things although my eyesight isn't quite up to doing 1/12th scale cushions, thats just beyond my ability. I am going to follow this as I always have thread of various types in the house and I think I have the small needles somewhere.
I don't recall learning to crochet, but I was taking it to school in 1st grade. I also use embroidery thread for tiny things, and sperate the strands. :-)
Love these mini pieces of art. I use the same size hook and gutterman thread for bead crocheting. You might love making beaded crochet bracelets. Lots of slip stitches, around and around. Thank you for sharing with us.
My favorite crochet is threadwork! Thank you I have somewhere for people to go to learn lol. I am always getting requests for teaching. I just don’t really know what the issue is other than being a lot closer to your work.
This is a great tutorial. I’ve been through the initial hazing of the couple of first attempts. This video has given me the confidence and tips I need to make micro crochet things.
Thank you!! You're a fantastic teacher. I've been wanting to get into this and have been trying but my problem has been trying to hold the working yarn like I do when I do regular sized crochet. This has made a big difference!
Great tutorial! All the information is so clear. I had a go, trying to use up some old tapestry wools that have been given to me. Definitely practice practice practice. But very satisfying result! Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial and for the inspiration to give it a try. With the right glasses and your recommended thread I managed to make an itsy bitsy granny square too. Sent a pic over on ig. I'm surprised and delighted cause I've got quite big hands and wondered if I'd end up giving up, but I didn't. You've added a whole new element to my crochet world. Time to make a cup of coffee and have another go methinks. ☕😊👍
When I didn't have any yarn there was a poncho made by Bag-O-Day Crochet that I really really really wanted to make (and wear and make for others) And, I DID HAVE some crochet thread so I proceeded to make a few of her designs using thread. I didn't know using even smaller thread 🧵 or that micro crochet was even a thing... Your micro mini crochet is SO CUTE!
I look forward to trying this. I've crocheted for decades, but especially with older eyes have hesitated trying this. I have a set of magnifying lenses and lots of variously sized yarns and threads, so I'll be working my way down to tinier and tinier hooks and thread. Thanks so much for your tutorial! I've subbed and can't wait to see what else you teach us.
I thought this was a great tutorial! I love your method for weaving in most of the ends as you go, I hadn't really figured that out so that was really helpful. I've already crocheted a lot before starting to do micro crochet and I'm going down gradually as you suggested and I think that's really helping. Thanks for a great tutorial!!
goodness me they are lovely, and may I say so are your eyes, your cardi was the same colour and I couldn't stop staring at them, green is my favourite colour
That is really really cute, I’ve often wondered about crocheting with fine thread like that. I would definitely try to weave in that last thread with a needle though, you’d be surprised what you can manage to thread into fine needles, I’m sure that thread would go into a fine needle
I have my grandmothers tiny crochet hooks, also some lace tatting stuff with spools and very, very, tiny hooks (sadly one is bent), I have been giving them the side eye lately... might have to do this. Maybe make a dolly bedspread for my niece.
I got my hands on some old darning thread. It had 3 strands together, which I separated. This thread was amazing for micro crochet. It is durable, tolerated rework well and took well to the tight stitches: I've found that polyester does not curve around the tiny hook the way I like.
Omg u have helpd me out so much i want to learn to do and i was not able to get is going and i did get a 3 Thread crochet temperature art going i can't wait in tell next. Wish i can post a pic of what i doing
Thanks SO MUCH! This really helped. I want to do mini doilies for my junk journals! Am going to get threads first thing tomorrow. I already have a varied of small hooks.
I got the metal only hooks in my set but wanted a grip. I found that wrapping a rubber band round and round it was a great solution just for trying this out.
I am doing this too, the same needle but a lot thinner thread. I starch them with hairspray to make them hold shape. (I also make all the silverwork, gives them even more "handcrafted" vibe.)
I love this . I think your work and program is wonderful. I am fiber artist and so also spin and thought what a great venue for silk . But if you don't spin you could likely use silk thread . I think it would be a mush better alternative for your time skill and effort if you are selling these charming things to get a better return . The type of fiber used commands great differences in outcomes and return. Many of the places that sell luxury yarns sometimes sell cobweb silk that would work. Colormart in UK also has cobweb weight in cashmere and silk for a little more luxury . Knit picks has a lace weight 2 ply silk yarn that you might separate into sicles (crochet will correct the slight imbalance of a spun single yarn ) but probably the best place to acquire pure silk for this purpose, is from Treenway Silk, that specialize in different silk threads, fiber or yarns and ribbons. I see they have a 4 pack of silk thread for fine cross stitch that would be perfect and looks about the same weight as your polyester but would lend itself to this art form much better than synthetic. So do give it a try . Make sure you don't get silk noil though as it doesn't have sheen. You want either glorious reeled silk or beautiful spun silk. Both have sheen but reeled has the most sheen.
I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned it (with over 350 comments on here already it would take a while to read them all) so please forgive me is somebody has already mentioned this. For the 2nd round onwards you might like to try starting with a "standing" double crochet (or the "standing" version of whatever stitch you are using in any other patterns that have you change colours). You get a "real" stitch for every stitch (no chains that are used in place of the first stitch) which looks great and functions just like all the other stitches. As a bonus is it is also easier to work over the starting tail against the same colour rather than the colour of the row/round below it. When I use this technique in granny squares I make the standing dc the middle one of a group of three as I get a nicer join at the end of a round when I join a dc to a dc rather than the corner chains to a dc. The technique has been around for quite a long time now but not many people know about it. Your vids get a lot of views so if you try it and decide you like it perhaps you can do a video about it, or incorporate it in other videos? :-)
Just ordered a 0.75 clover hook and some top stitch thread! Bc sizing down gradually is not the way I do things! LOL I probably need something to magnify...I just had to start wearing glasses though so maybe just those will work. Hahaha.. jumping in head first! (I do crochet and amigurumi already.)
I wish I had seen this video 35 years ago! I have been crocheting so long and I don’t think my eyes and hands can manage such small thread or hook….it is amazing watching you….
Super great tutorial! I don’t know how to crochet but your tutorial is really great ! I’m going to get some material and hook to try ❤ thank you so much !

It is a lot better than crocheting doilies and tablecloths. I have crocheted this way for many years. I am 89 years old. Regards from New Zealand.
You give me hope that I might be able to do it at 60 then 😊
If you don’t mind me asking, How many years have you been crocheting?

Oh my word, this is amazing, there is no way that I can do that. Well done, so cute, so beautiful

Went from beginning crochet two weeks ago by finishing a beanie to now thinking I’m able to begin my micro crochet journey.
Oh my gosh, amazing! So glad you’re enjoying crochet! ❤️
Thank you its nice to see your work , I made a small peace for a doll's house I think I've leaned a little more from you😊
Glad you enjoyed!
I luv this ❤ I can make it for my Barbie
You did excellent! Thank you.
Thank you so much!! 🥰
This tutorial alone is worth my subscribing! How fantastic! Hugs from Orlando, FL. ☀🌴🏖
Just ordered a 0.75 clover hook and some top stitch thread! Bc sizing down gradually is not the way I do things! LOL
I probably need something to magnify...I just had to start wearing glasses though so maybe just those will work. Hahaha.. jumping in head first!
Yay, so glad you're going to give it a try! 😊❤️
