    Hi, fellow ham. I am a fan from Japan. It's nice to see someone eles make a hole on the top of brand new truck for antenna! I have a 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser Dubble cab truck and made two holes on top of the roof for ID-5100 and FTM-400DH!! 73 de 7K2LGO (NY6A)

    This video was NOT boring at all. I really enjoyed it as I too will be installing a VHF/UHF Antenna (same brand and model number) on my truck, although I have a Ford and a Yaesu FT-7900R radio. Either way, watching someone go through the mounting procedure is always interesting.

    Hello, Earl W8CEO here. And I want to say that I certainly appreciate this video. Why? Because I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado Crew-cab pickup Myself As your’s and I have a ( Icom 2300 H ) 2 meter mobile that I have been wondering just how in the heck am l going to install this 2 meter mobile radio? Just by chance I was surfing through some amateur videos on here. And came across your installation video! And I’ve got to say thank you so much for making this video on your 2018 Chevy Silverado Truck! Your absolutely correct in it’s a total pain in doing any type of installation of any type of Amature Radio’s into this newer vehicles! I’ve been under the hood, under the body looking for some where, and how to run the power cables from the battery to inside this truck cab? And Man! You just Save this Ole 70 yr’s old man a bunch of headaches, and fretting in how to get this accomplished! Thank you, thank you for making this video! It’s a God Sent unto this ole man! Lol I’ve currently have a comet mag-mount on the roof. And I don’t like the idea of the coax cable running over the outside of this vehicle. But after seeing this video I believe that I’m going to go with the CA-2x4 4SRNMO BROADBAND VHF/UHF Antenna. It’s has the Spring that comes with it, and since your video I know now! How to install it as well. Just wanted to Say Thank You Again for Making This Video!
    God Bless and 73’s
    Thanks again
    Earl W8CEO

    One of the better install videos because it was real world, including the decision making process and a bit of “we’ll see if it works” stuff. That’s better than those where everything is already planned out. Oh and the 5100 is a great radio so great install all around...even though I know it’s not a recent video.

    I know its been a while, but may I suggest to first cover the work area 12x12 with duct tape and to drill a pilot hole. It helps with heat dissipation and scratches from the shavings. Never brush the shavings aside. Always shopvac from directly 'above' the surface.

    You may want to trim your A.M./FM radio antenna on the truck since it is hitting the garage door. It will also hit in a parking garage. I had to trim mine on my Ford F-150 Truck. I took the ball of of the antenna, cut it shor,ter, epoxied the ball back on, and sprayed it with flat black pain. Looks original, but I don’t scrape the antenna like I did befor the trim job.

My Yeasu FT100D is under my seat and the IC710G is under her seat.the ATAS 120 is on my door and the dual bander is on her door.the CB is now on her side of the center console,with a magnet mount on the roof.

    As an alternative, I recently picked up a SofTopper for my truck. It obviously isn't a hard shell, but it's nice because it can collapse and fold down when needed for larger items and easy to remove and not take up a lot of space if you don't want it on there.

    Ham, trucks and RVs are never boring. Almost 3 years later is the truck still with you? I'm a hole drilling chicken partly because I can never make up my mine where the antenna(s) will go. Solid antenna. Used to have a CA2x4 on a fold over mount that would occasionally go into the garage in the up position and get bent 90*. It survived the abuse and 15 years later is still working.

Mounted radio against center console (not ideal) using a lip mount antenna between hood and fender (somewhat directional - roof mount is ideal). Really nice ARE cap. I own the Z Series model with keyless entry. I think you will love it. That install looked easy in the video but I'm pretty sure it was more difficult in real life. Is a ham radio more beneficial to an RV'er than a CB?

    • @WanderingWagners
      @WanderingWagners  6 років тому +2

      Both have their benefits, CB gives you more real time road info but that band is so full of garbage. Ham radio gives you a much broader reach and the people are very polite. My radio can talk to another mobile unit about 25 miles away, working through a repeater that distance can double. Using D-star (digital mode) that same radio can talk around the world. D-star has a "channel" dedicated to truckers and RV'ers.

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 6 років тому +1

      Yes, much farther range. VHF/UHF with about fifty watts, plus repeaters, can extend the range up to 100 miles.
      CB is limited to 4 watts, with ten miles at best.
      Plus hams are more helpful, CBers are mostly clowns.
      You'd need to be licensed by the FCC, and that's passing a test about the rules, operations, and some knowledge of electronics. Lots of 411 on YT about getting the FCC license.

      Getting the license isn't that hard, and I'm also a VE (volunteer examiner)!

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 6 років тому

      yup, this is true, 100 miles if the repeater is in the mountains.
      D-star is digital, networked kinda like cell phones.
      But you can talk with many people.
      The FCC requires good edicate and procedure.
      Ham radio also can have skywarn and other helpful public services.
      If you get lost, or need help, locals are glad to help.
      CB can get "smokey" reports for speeders. lol

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 6 років тому

      To take the FCC license test, you'll need to find a local VE, often with a repeater club. VE's issue the tests.
      Whilst camping, you may find other hams to talk with to pass some time. Part of the fun is seeking them out.
      btw Mike, does Lynn also have a license? If not, she can transmit IF you act as her control operator.

    I noticed your license plate on another video and wondered if you had anything about installing a radio and antenna. Do you have a radio in your Airstream? We are thinking of doing fulltime RV next year and I will want to set up a shack in ours.

      I currently don't have a radio in the Airstream for a while I used an HT running through my Icom in the truck on crossband repeat

    Nice work! So, do you broadcast while driving or just listen? You mentioned the box under the passenger seat having a mic port so I was wondering if you did that. Also, where can we give you a listen? I don't know much of anything about HAM radio so not even sure if anyone can just do that.
    Overall, great video.

    By connecting it directly to the battery, is there a way to turn it off? You might want to connect it to a fuse that is only powered with the ignition on. Just a suggestion.

    • @WanderingWagners
      @WanderingWagners  5 років тому +1

      The antenna needs ground plane, or in other words a surface that can reflect the signal.

  • @gac914
    @gac914 6 років тому

    Just a question. . .. Wouldn't it be better to mount the antenna so that it bends towards the rear? That way, should you forget to lower it before putting it in the garage, it would fold over while hitting the door rather than breaking off. If it's laid over in the garage after pulling in, you wouldn't have to worry that it's up in the garage when backing out. . . .(??)

    • @naiiawahVideo
      @naiiawahVideo 6 років тому +1

      Those antennas need to have the main part pulled up first before they will lay over, so hitting the door will be a "bad result" regardless. He could have laid it over to the rear just as easily as to the front, but if you notice his rafter was in the way to lay it over backwards.

    • @WanderingWagners
      @WanderingWagners  6 років тому

      We don't park in the garage and if we go into a parking garage we'd have to lift then fold it over. We are always aware that it's there. Every time l truck we've owned has had a roof antenna

    Step bit.... NOOOOOO!!!! Get the proper tool so you won’t deform the sheet metal or damage the headliner. If you trade vehicles often, as you said, and tend to drill holes then an investment in the proper tool to drill a hole makes sense. I have a hole saw, from a company by the name of Laird, that I’ve used on four of my personal vehicles over the years. The initial investment will pay off if you do multiple vehicles over the years and, there’s very little risk of damage and the hole is perfect for an NMO mount.
    After I drill a hole I take a small needle file and go underneath the the cut to remove burrs as well as any primer so the mount will fit flush and obtain a good ground.

    • @WanderingWagners
      @WanderingWagners  6 років тому +1

      I'm not a fan of the look, I also like that the roof gives a much better ground plane for the antenna. A fender mount works though, and it's a much easier install.
