  • My primary purchase from Black Friday of 2018 was the Icom ID-5100A Mobile DSTAR Radio from R&L Electronics. This radio isn't new, but it is the first time I have had a chance to make a video with one of these models, so I decided to post this video. I am looking forward to getting this radio mounted in my truck and doing some on-the-road videos with it, and also some DSTAR videos on this channel.
    After creating this video, I did follow up with R&L and learned that the "Deluxe" model comes with the faceplate mount, and not the body mount, for the radio. The body mount is sold separately for about $30.

      I'm taking my test on 4/19. Havent purchased this radio yet, just doing my research. I agree with Jason about the mic cable issue. I didn't realize that the mic does not plug into the head unit. Where I was planning on mounting everything, this might be a deal breaker. More research is required. Congrats!!

    You know, Jason, you saved my soul with this video. I couldn’t get it to take the tone and I literally thought it just wasn’t working. I thought I had a bad rig LOL. I’m coming from the Kenwood world and Icom is not only different, the way they write manuals is different; I couldn’t find what I needed. Thanks for the video. Now, finish the truck setup and do the video ;)

    Wow! I didn't know you were recording when we made the QSO! You can use a generic CAT5 or CAT6E Ethernet cable and a female/female connector to extend your mic cable. That's how it's setup in my car. Same goes for the head unit. Happy New year, Jason! DE W5AJO

      Hey Sean, thanks for the QSO. I left the radio on 146.520 for a few days after this recording, and I have been hearing some good traffic over there. I guess it is time to start monitoring Simplex again.

    It's called the "deluxe" model, with advanced child quieting. There's no mount so they can use it as a really expensive etch-a-sketch. GREAT radio, all the same.

    Hi Jason, I have been watching your videos and really like them!
    I bought an ID-5100A Deluxe and the difference is only the control head mounting bracket.
    IComm seems to mean "iCom without mounting hardware. "
    When installing the radio in my Jeep Wrangler I installed a double female RJ-45 in my dash replacing a cigarette lighter jack. I ran a 6 foot UTP cable from the back of the jack to the transceiver. Now the mic looks like a factory install.

    The comparable radio from Yaesu (FTM-400XDR) has the same setup where the mic plugs into the radio body. Face is remote mount only. Also, ICOM does include software and that's one thing the SD Card is used for... programming the radio without a cable.

    I just got the 5100 myself for my extended cab truck and that was my first thought as well. What a design flaw. Its like whoever designed the radio never actually installed what they were designing. I had to order a Network Extension Cable to lengthen the microphone cable with so the microphone would reach the front of the truck where the head unit is mounted.

  • @eliothewitt
    @eliothewitt 7 місяців тому

    I remote mounted the radio body unit in my Jeeps overhead console. Routed extension cable to an Amazon sourced bulkhead receptacle for the head unit. The head unit has another small extension from the dash mounted receptacle so is easily removed and stashed away in my open jeep. A short extension cable for the microphone also installed in the body to another amazon sourced bulkhead receptacle on the overhead console. Microphone easily stashed away with head unit. Works great and is very clean install.

    I mounted my in the trunk and used a lido mount for the display head and bolted to the passenger seat bolt. To extend the microphone, I grabbed a network cable and RJ45 coupler - need 8 conductors. Plug the microphone into the coupler/network cable and the other end of network cable to radio. Control cable is long enough to reach for most cars. You may want an external speaker if the radio is in the trunk. When I leave the car I take the display head (magnetically attached) and only two cables and the mount are visible. Take care with the display head - popped the glass and repair is $$$. I put the display head in a pelican case for safe transport.

    Jason, I just bought an ID-5100A at the Ham Holiday hamfest this weekend. I agree that the lack of a mounting bracket for the radio body, a head bracket and a mic extension cable in the deluxe version is disheartening. I wish they had included those in the package. Looking forward to getting it setup in my shack for D-Star use. 73 de Bobby KF5GTX

    I think pretty much everyone has said what I think. I love Icom and I think they are the best, but this crap they did with this deluxe radio is so stupid. You buy a radio with a 12ft control cable but yet now I have to pay 30$ for a radio mouting bracket, 60$ for a mic ext. cable (from them), then you have to buy a speaker or two. I've used this radio in my van for a year an love it, my 8800 died in the house so I moved this radio in the house and now I have cables everywhere because of it. Why can't you just put a mic port on the head control unit?

    Just curious, how that screen looks in daylight in your truck You mentioned you were going to install it. I'm using an old Yaesu FT8500 Mr Potato head Dual band, the display is excellent for a radio that is over 20 years old hoping to pick one of these up during the Black Friday coming up.

    The mounting bracket they include is for the control head only. Check to see if it came with the Bluetooth board in the deluxe model. Their site has it listed as an option. They are also sold out at the present time. If it did, you can pair it with an Android device with software from the Icom American website to do some features. You can also use an Android device with the Icom data cable or the RT-Systems Orange cable. Tied to a computer, you can run D-rats over those cables too. I put velcro strips on the bottom of mine and use that to hold it in place on the transmission hump of my pickup truck. That way, it is easy to pull it out and hook it up in the house for base operations. Easiest way to program it is to use an SD card and download the repeater lists from www.dstarinfo.com. It will give you Dstar and Analog FM stations in your area and let you import it into the radio with the card.

    I still have my ID880H D-Star Dual Band mobile that I bought at Richmond Frostfest (VA) back on February 2, 2013. It is better to program it by computer than by hand/manually. Radio still works. I use Repeaterbook.com to find frequencies in my area and also have Air, VHF Marine and Railroad programmed for Receive - Only. I need to get a radio that doesn't have the multi-semented alpha-numeric and character display. 6 large and 2 small. That ID5100A has an easy to read display.
    If Icom would make a DMR Dual band mobile with a separation kit, I would buy it. Not all vehicles, nowadays, are 2-way/ham radio friendly , i.e. 2014 Jeep Latitude.
    I have a CAT-5 cable to extend the mic cable using a mating connector between the two.
    I am using RT Systems w/ the programming cable [Orange].

    Looks like a nice dual bander I have been in the camp that ALL mobile radios should be remote mount for years now... the mic should either connect to the head or give you an option to connect to the head OR the body, but not ONLY the body. I may be in the market for a new mobile dual bander which is the reason for my visit to this video. It would go in a 14' Subaru Forester. Power, Ground and antenna are ALL behind the back seat in the cargo area on the drivers side so running an additional mic extension back there would suck. Also of the school that a radio that originally sold for $700+ and still is in the high $300's MUST have every mount with it that is needed. for the radio body AND the control head anything less is just plain wrong of the mfg. Also I am a bit concerned about the touch screen... If I had to tap the touch screen two, three and sometimes four times like you were required to do on many occasions during this video I would literally want to rip the control head off the dash and throw the it out the window while driving down the highway at high speeds. Please tell me it really isn't THAT bad! ? Also this is a bit knit picky and I realize this but neither band on your radio put out the advertised 50 Watts... 42 Watts is a 40 Watt radio, 44-47 Watts is a 45 Watt radio, and ok 48 or 49 Watts can be a 50 Watt radio but output down in the low 40's is off by a full 15% of the rated output. 85 cents isn't a dollar and 42 watts isn't a 50 watt radio. lol

    I think maybe Icom connects the Mic to the base unit instead of the head is so that on can easily take the head down and put it in the glove box without the mic trailing clumsily along. I don't need to do that but if I lived in a big city where security is a big issue, I probably would. I think you can even store the head somewhere and leave it on in the crossband setting so that you have the security and the ability to crossband. Also, if you put a mic connection on the head, it would necessitate a larger (less easy to stow) cable between the base and the head.

    I agree on not understanding Icom's thought on not including a mounting bracket. Also, you can just use CAT5 to extend the mic; I would recommend getting shielded and not just regular. Maybe just 2 or 3 feet for your setup and then a female/female adapter for the end where the mic connects. This is how I did my FTM-400XDR which is the same design (remote head only radio and the mic connects to the body of the radio with no extension included, though a long cable for the head is included...so, Icom isn't the only one to do that, though it's still weird). Also, I'm not sure on the 5100 but I know on my Kenwood D710 you can select whether you want the audio for the A side and B side routed separately to the separate outputs or both to speaker 1 output - the 5100 might have the same option, not sure.

      @@HamRadio2 That is my understanding. I did find one reference online that that user said they used CAT6 and not 5 and it worked fine. I guess grab a patch cable and give it a try...I think the coiled cord will unplug from the mic itself, too, if I remember right. That would tell you if there is some sort of cross over in the pins but I think it is straight through.

      Yes, a regular RJ45 cable can be used as a mic extension. I use the exact same thing on both the Icom 5100 & Kenwood D710G. No issues here. And if you want, you can use a 6 pin RJ11 cable for the separation, so no need to buy Icom's over priced $6 cable.

    Using the control head for the mic connection could be problematic since control head mounting is usually not as rigid as the body of the radio. I think the hardware to mount and cables to connect should at least be an inexpensive option when purchasing a radio and not $30 for a $2 bracket.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 років тому

      Other radios have done it this way with success. This radio head is already big and bulky (which I like in this application) so I can't see how making a mic connection on the head would be much different.

    Where in your house are you? I ask because I noticed you got a GPS lock eventually, in the video. My old FTM-100DR locked, and I'm in a second floor room with one window. My own room for my shack. Yes, my wife understands the importance of having a quiet place to - well - play. ;-)

    What I don’t understand is why they didn’t put the mic jack on the head.. to have the mic up front you have to get a extension cord and thread it from the back to the front if you put the base in the very back of the vehicle like most people do….

    The TM-742A/E has a maximum output of 50 watts (2 m) and 35 watts (70 cm). There are also four optional FM band units -- 10 m (50 watts), 6 m (50 watts), 1.25 m (25 watts)*, 70 cm (35 watts), and 23 cm (10 watts) -- to endow the TM-742A/E with tri-band status. For low-power operations, there are 5- and 10-watt settings (1 W with the 23-cm band unit).
