Brixton is a district within the London Borough of Lambeth in south London.
Around 1067, a man called 'Brihtsige' built a stone structure and it became a regular community meeting place known as 'Brixis-tane', a saxon term meaning 'at the stone of Brihtsige'. Over time, Brixistane morphed into the name Brixton.
Electric Avenue was one of the first streets to have electric street lighting installed and is home to the famous Brixton market.
By the 1960’s, the markets were the go to place for Caribbean's seeking out rare things like Scotch bonnet peppers and salt-fish to make things like patties, and fritters and authentic Jerk based dishes previously only available ‘back home’.
The covered in Brixton Village & Market Row markets are intrinsically linked to the history giving the area its strong Afro-Caribbean culture and ambience.
The Barrier Block is a daunting block of flats often mistaken for Brixton Prison. It's a truly brutalist-inspired structure designed by a Polish lady. The harsh, uninviting sight of it has a fearful reputation which it has also lived up to in the past.
Brixton has birthed some of the most influential aspects of modern culture in British society since the mid-20th century.
The Brixton Splash is a street festival held on the first Sunday of every August till 7pm with sound systems, soul food stalls and live music. It celebrates the historic local culture and provides free art workshops and volunteer opportunities for the youngsters.
Windrush Square was named to mark the 50 years since the Empire Windrush ship arrived with 492 initial migrants from Jamaica three years after World War Two in 1948. It features both the United Kingdom's national war memorial to African and Caribbean service personnel who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Grade II-listed Georgian building housing the Black Cultural Archives. The archives are free to visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10-6pm.
Brixton is just as famous for its vitality and tolerance as it is for riots and crime. It was the scene of riots in 1981 during a time of deep social unrest. To tackle the rising crime from gangs, Police attempted to carry out an extremely controversial new law; the 'sus law' which allowed stop and search procedures by plain clothed officers on the mere "suspicion" of possible wrongdoing by any individual.
Within 5 years, 9 cinemas were built mostly under the railway arches in Brixton. The Ritzy Picturehouse on Coldharbour Lane, opened in 1911 as "the Electric Pavilion" and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built cinemas for film in the UK. It's the only one of those 9 to still exist.
This place is a vibrant melting pot of colour, sound, people, variety, smell and activity with a rare freedom that invites you to be you, earning it much admiration and pride.
Robert David Jones was born in Brixton and became known to the world as David Bowie. He was a beloved Brixtonian and this particular mural, created in his memory, is popular with visitors and tourists.
Pop Brixton has transformed a disused plot of land into a trendy space for food and live entertainment, seven days a week, till late. Its made out of old shipping containers, a prettier version of the successful Boxpark concept.
Born and raised in Brixton its changed so much as people say times have moved on it still brings tears to my eyes when i think back how we had to live

As a 51 year old african-american man across the pond and watching such shows as The Avengers, Doctor Who, The Prisoner and my all time favorite Benny Hill, these shows provided hours of fascination and curiosity in my early teen years. London and its many districts have a rich history, and I'm glad that a brother is showing the contributions, and sacrifices made by blacks in the U.K. no matter what part of the world they came from. The internet has made connecting to information about different cultures, their way of life, customs and traditions as well as the people themselves with a few clicks on a keyboard! By the way I'm still very up to date on The gang flying around in the T.A.R.D.I.S. The longest running sci-fi show in the history of T.V. Some things will never get old!!!!!! Brixto is the tradtionallly still viewed by many as the cultural nucleas of the London African-Caribbean community, since 1948, but it is much more dispersed now throughout many parts of South London. Thornton Heath, London borough of Croydon, is now considered the leading African-Caribbean neighbourhood of South London, 65,812 population with the Afro-British demographics of 36.4% (27/3/2011).

Born and bread in Lambeth, lived in Clapham, Stockwell and Brixton from 1967 till 1983.Great memories. Loved the market, Ritzy, Ska te park and used to go to Wimpy every Saturday with my mum. Like Bowie moved to Beckenham in 1983. Still miss Brixton.
Windrush Square originally the Orange Luxury Coach station, where people got coaches to the coast seaside and more places.
I have lived here all my life and didn't realise that.It might explain the "Butlins Holidays" painted logo on the wall there
Brixton is my hometown. I left in 1969 when I married and moved near my work. It's good to see that the Granville arcade still exists under another name and the Ritzy cinema once called the Pullman. I went to Effra Parade Infant and Junior School; Santley Street Senior School, and also Tulse Hill School when it first opened. I grew up at 146 Leander Road and also lived at Crownstone Court on St Matthews Road. I worked at the Regal/ABC Streatham and many other cinemas in South London. Great days.

Brixton is not like how your friend described it as anymore. It is now fully gentrified with many of the locals including carribeans forced to move outside of london or other areas and now the area is full of yuppies and hippies and posh people who find it “trendy” and many of the social housing has been demolished

@@sonicmagnus5312 yh correct but probably worse n its not just Brixton but other areas of london like peckham, camden, nottinghill, hackney, Stratford and so many other areas of london. 2012 olympics played a big part too but ur lucky new york doesnt have 630k+ cctv cameras. Google gascoigne, aylesbury, heygate, thamesmead, ferrierr, nightingale estates etc to see example of huge social projects being demolished n replaced with modern apartments for the rich and foreign chinese/Russian investors. It’s such an incredible place, there’s something special about Brixton and there always has been but it’s sad to see the uniqueness slowly decrease
It has become more European. There are less than a million Caribbeans in the UK as they have moved away gone to Canada and the USA or back home. When the UK left the Commonwealth, Caribbean families who helped Britain clear up after WW2, were given a hard time...... I am surprised to keep hearing about Africans, as it was the British Caribbeans mainly from Jamaica and other islands who helped to build up Brixton. The "gentrification" of Brixton seems to be about money being spent for Europeans to set up the cafes and restaurants now in the market place rather than the food stalls. Also being close to Central London, the government wants to attract more Europeans, therefore properties will become very expensive................

@@audreyfoster1695 part of brixton was one of the most expensive parts of south london in the late victorian/edwardian period. what exactly did the jamacians build in brixton i was born there in 1956 & my mum had lived in blenheim rd since mid 40's the only thing i remember they did was take over the grenville arcade from the english & jewish stallholders. we also had a fair sized irish community their pub was the george canning in effra rd. i have no idea what the place is like now other than it being the murder capital of london wild horses could not get me within 100 miles of the place now. i lived & went to school there in the 60's & my mum in the late 30's through the 40's so witnessed the influx & i fail to see that replacing the irish & jewish populations with afro carribeans has been a positive thing.

The Barrier Block was designed the way it is because a Flyover was going to be built straight through Brixton in the early 70s and the Building is built like that to withstand the noise and pollution as it was going to run alongside it

Wow, Dewyne. You have flooded my mind with childhood memories, My mum would WALK me, my brother and two sister’s, from Stockwell toBritton every Saturday, to buy food and sauces that surprise.
She was somewhat questioned, given the somewhat hot meal she created in our white circle.
However Brixton lives on in my mind. But what happened to all the market stalls, that used to be around the station, and to some degree in the arcades? Those archives used to be stuffed with fun stuff to buy, now, just food?

I believe the barrier block design was to address one of the urban motorways planned at the time, fortunately cancelled. It has become somewhat of an icon, it would have been worth showing the other side to give context. I suspect if the council were to attempt to demolish it there would be an outcry. It does have a presence and there are much worse buildings in the area I would vote to remove than this.

Visited this place back in January, wanted to visit the windmill. Must of went the wrong way. Try to find the path but hard to get to even with a map. A guy who live there wanted to help but do not know where to windmill even he live there.
If you go again you'll find it upwards on Brixton Hill towards Streatham, at the right turning just before the prison. Wanted to feature it, but the episode was long enough.
blenheim gardens is the turning after jebb avenue ( the prison ) coming from the tube windmill park if it still called that is about 100 yards in blenheim gardens on left hand side, grew up in the late 50's early 60's playing in it windmill stopped working in 1934 so iv'e never seen it work.

it's the Granville arcade most of the stallholders were jewish in the early 60's, we lived dumbarton rd, grandparents sudbourne & Blenheim & aunts uncles Bonham.
@Jodie J my grandparents lived in blenheim rd from mid 40's until 1969 when they knocked it down my mum & her younger brother were bought up there. they lived the other side of the alley ( led to elim church ) my grandad used to clean the church & play the organ he was not religious but could not afford a piano an arrangement that suited both parties. i used to play in the park around the windmill. i think that they ruined the place although the houses were cold & had no bathrooms ( there was plenty of room in them to put one in ) they knocked them down instead & have you seen the state of what they built in their place.

@Jodie J my grandad & dad played darts for the oak in the 50's, most of the people i knew who lived in lyham rd, were in the forresters friendly society who met @ the hall in lyham rd opposite the school they are either dead or had moved by late 60's. most of the people i knew then were my grandparents neighbours in blenheim all moved out by 1970.

In other words, the only location these poofy town planners can't touch seems to be the only place no body wants to go, and as such everywhere other than the local penetentiary is free of their weak cultural influence. Brixton used to be a ahopping mecca for west London, i understand my great grandma would shop there from belham.

Gentrification is destroying London. And it's thriving communities, gentrification is a form of racism and segregation, London is lossing its character and the people moving in and the places are boring and bland now, London is not for the local born and bred hence why many haveeft to Essex and Kent.
But if nothing ever gets gentrified, Brain Smith, it deteriorates into a slum and people complain that they are being neglected. Victorian slums became slums only because no-one looked after them.

Funny you mention the origin of the name being Anglo Saxon, then skip 1,000 years to talk only about the black culture of the area that's only been there since the early to late 1950s. Shame.
1948 i believe ,my mum was still @ school corner mandrell rd lyham rd, the only positive thing was the music which we bought from the import record store on atlantic rd. we had a thriving jewish community until they got off the boat train from clapham junction & congregated around the railway st. we had a working class english & irish community + a jewish merchant class mainly grenville arcade stallholders, these were pushed out by the incomers who are now whingeing about them now being pushed out, we were told it's progress when it happened to us by ted knight & co so what's good for the goose ect.
Don't forget that Jamaicans only arrived in the 1960s. Before that is was nearly all native. So a very short history.
