    Excellent review of Bridge, though I would change a couple of things. I mainly use it for culling images before import to LR. So, in preferences under Labels, you can uncheck a box that requires you to use the Cmd / Cntl key to assign a label. Much simpler to press 1, 2, 3, etc to add stars or color label without the modifier key. You can also rename your color label scheme in this section to whatever fits for your workflow. When reviewing (culling) images, instead of the filmstrip like you're using here, hit spacebar for full screen. Much better to review and select without all the interface clutter. The 1, 2, 3, etc, keys still function in this mode to assign labeling and the delete key rejects the photo but doesn't delete. if you change your mind, the 0 (zero) key removes the reject label.

If there was a hard disk failure would I have to start again or does time machine for example hold the back up?

      Cataloging is specific to Lightroom. However, all info you add to images in Bridge are automatically saved to the images metadata. Yes, if you move files it save the tagging or culling labels and other metadata unless you delete it. I find the cataloging of Lightroom to be a pain in the ass.

    Wonderful video. I've used Adobe products since the dawn of dust (or Adobe), but never used Bridge because of one question I can't find an answer to. It has mostly to do with the difference between finder folders and Bridge folders. I have relatively good organization skills for photos on my Mac, but now the number has grown. When you create folders or collections in Bridge and add photos to them, is Bridge duplicating photos that you have scattered all over your Mac and placing them into new finder folders somewhere? Or do these folders and collections exist only within Bridge itself making it a way to organize photos from all of their locations on your hard drive? (Much like the way that a finder folder full of aliases might work while leaving originals in place.)

    Thanks for your video. I've been scanning in old family photos and expect to have around 20,000 when I'm done. I want to put them together so I can give them to family and they can view the photos based on their search criteria (by person, event, etc). Is Bridge the best software to do this? How do I give them the ability to search the photos without having to learn Bridge? Is there a scrapbook app I could use?

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому +1

      So I had a guy in one of my classes doing the exact same thing. Bridge would work fine for this. What you want to do is add your search criteria in keywords. Basically, add text to the metadata fields. The key ones are title, description and keywords. This info will be attached to any image. Even if you switch programs or upload to flickr. It will read these fields. You can then filter or search images using bridge to find images. Using collections is also another possibility. The bad news is it will take time with that many images.

  • @jimcant8173
    @jimcant8173 4 роки тому

    Nice job. Do have 2 questions. Can you cull like you can in Lightroom; that is, mark a image as rejected, have it not show on the screen, then later actually delete it from disk? 2nd can the work done in Bridge be imported into Lightroom (collections, ratings for images, etc.) for further processing with develop or print modules for instance. Much of Bridge is functionally duplicated in Lightroom and I think the relation between the two programs deserves mention in you (very thorough and informative) video. Thanks

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can cull like in Lightroom. You can also import. Bridge is just a browser it has one single purpose. It is probably a better browser than Lightroom. Lightroom, catalogs, is a browser and RAW photo editor. You would not want to use Bridge and then go to Lightroom, it would not make any sense. You could go from Bridge to to Adobe Camera Raw then to Photoshop. Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom develop module are exactly the same. Bridge has collections just like Lightroom. I prefer Bridge over Lightroom because of its speed. Personally, I use Photo Mechanic. Hope this helps.

      Bridge is an image browser. I will pretty much allow you to view any type of image. You can use to import, view, cull, tag images. You are correct you do not edit with it. But if you take 500 images you do not want to open them one at a time. This will let you organize and view and select the images you like.

So I know when I get done shooting I plug my camera into my computer and I have only ever just used the Canon software that automatically imports it to Pictures and then lumps it into separate folders for which day that it got. Great tutorial!
    Question:
    I am going to be scanning countless old family photo albums into a digital photo album (and Adobe Bridge is a top contender for the application that I will choose for this endeavor).
    Once I am done creating my photo album, how can I back up the key files and share the album with family?
    In other words, I want to install Bridge on multiple computers (belonging to several family members living at different locations) and want their Bridge album to mirror what I created on my PC.
    Initially, when a family member opens their Bridge application, I want them to have exactly what I have -- photos, tags, metadata, etc, and want them to be 100% independent of me.
    They are free to change whatever they want, after I set them up. But how do I get an exact replica of all of my labor in creating my album onto their PCs?
    Does Adobe Bridge have something like "Backup Database" (to be done on my PC) followed by me making a copy of the backed-up files, and then using those files via a "Restore Database" on a family member's PC?
    Again, great tutorial!
    Thank you.

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому

      Metadata is embedded into the file when you save it. Unless it is a raw file, then it uses an .xmp file. In your case if you use Bridge you get like 15 G of cloud storage with your account. You can upload and sync the your Adobe Cloud with that application. You can share that with anyone you want.

    • @NoEgg4u
      @NoEgg4u 4 роки тому +2

      @@Jcwphoto Hi John,
      It sounds like Adobe's cloud storage option is ideal, functionally. But I do not trust cloud storage (or any third party) with my data, unless I first encrypt my files, locally, via an open source tool such as "gpg" or "veracrypt", etc. I am very security conscious, and never give my my data (unless I first encrypt it) to anyone. For backups, I do them locally, with encryption, and give a copy of my backups to a trusted family member at a different location (which safeguards my data against a fire or home burglary).
      So I am looking for a way to copy the photo album to a USB flash drive. But before I get started on this very time consuming project of scanning over a thousand physical photos, I want to be sure that, upon completion of creating my photo album (tags and all), that I can quickly duplicate everything on a family member's computer. I do not want to have to re-scan anything or re-tag anything. I just want to be able to install Bridge on a family member's computer, and copy the gigs of photo data (from my computer to their computer) and have the album duplicated on a family member's computer.
      I want to do what Adobe's cloud syncing would do, but without using Adboe's cloud service. I want to achieve my goal without using the internet -- and use a USB flash drive in place of cloud storage.
      It that doable?
      Thank you.

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому

      Yes, as long as you embed the iptc when you save the files. It saves the metadata in the file and bridge will access it through that.

      @NoEgg4u 4 роки тому +2

      @@Jcwphoto Excellent.
      I do not know what "iptc" is. But I guess that once I start using the software it will be intuitive.
      Is there a "Save database" type function? And a "Restore database" function?
      Or will I have to hunt for and identify the files that need to be copied from computer "A" to computer "B"?
      Yes, I will of course copy all of the digital photos, and maintain the directory structure. But I imagine that there will be Bridge database specific files that need to also be copied from computer "A" to computer "B".

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому

      You must do something with computers but there isn't a database with bridge. IPTC is part of the metadata. Your files will embed that info into each file. You will not see it. Also the standard code for file naming in photojournalism is : 2 first letters of your family name + first letter of your 1st name, the year, 001 incremental (first assignment start at 002, 001 is your personal projects), 0001 incremental for the pictures, 00001 (!!!) for National Geographic.
    That give me something like BAJ20190010001 = first picture of the first personal project of the year 2019. The date is one of the first thing appearing in metadata, and you don't need to write it in your filename to find any picture by date. It's the best file management system for any photographer in my opinion. It was passed down to me by Dominic Nahr from Time Magazine. You're welcome :)

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  5 років тому +1

      A lot of papers even the AP use a similar but different standard. I can't remember who but a photographer on the East coast developed a photojournalism software program. It was quite nice. It used date, slug which was more specific to the event than a proper name and photographers initials. Ap has its own method which uses a transmission reference code. Most journalists don't use Bridge. They prefer Photo Mechanic. Bridge was horrible when it first came out.

      @@Jcwphoto I know but Photo Mechanic is 105 bucks and Bridge is free. And it ain't bad at all now. Just my two cents. Dominic uses Photo Mechanic. Some prefer Bridge like my other mentor Roger Lemoyne. I would say it's about 50/50 now.

      What's the software you are talking about? Really curious!

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 років тому

      Anyway as far as I know the code I mentioned is pretty much universal now, only Magnum had different letters to separate analog with digital images but it's the only agency which still accept analog images, and National Geographic requires another zero... Sure I guess there are a lot of specific systems for specific magazines but as far as I'm aware just about any publication will accept a file named this way. OK I haven't tried but Dominic worked for Time, Nat Geo, GQ among others and said it was pretty much universal. I'll have to verify by myself tho.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 років тому

      Anyway my point is this file naming system works wonders even if you're not a journalist! I think everyone should use it. You don't remember the exact date, but you have it in your metadata; however you will almost always remember in *which order you shot what*, what personal project or assignment came in what order. That's really, really hard to forget. Hence the genius of this system.

      @@kandrisa I would say call Adobe. They should be able to give you a better answer. I have never used Sharepoint so it hard to give any advice. Collections, just remembers the path of where the item is located. Maybe it does not understand the path to Sharepoint.

    I have hundreds of folders, 1000's of pictures in each and they have no naming convention. Some are yyyy-mm-dd, some are San Diego vacation, some are grandkids -yyyy, some are ios, and on and on. Can I organize these into a nice layout by date taken using Adobe Bridge? I don't mind spending the time to learn something from tutorials but I want to be sure to learn the right free tool. Advice is always appreciated.

      Carl H yes. I don’t have this process in the video just how to do it as you move images off you sd card. You will have to put all files into appropriate folders but i will make a video to show you the renaming process today or tomorrow.

    I have an honest question for my knowledge. I hear a lot of people talk about Lightroom is trash use bridge, and ACR instead. Everything I see you do in bridge for the most part I can do in lightroom and its all in one place. How is bridge in reality any different than Lightroom. Now it imports a lot faster than lightroom does I will say that, but the overall experience seems like Lightroom is easier and faster

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  4 роки тому +1

      It is a good question. Lightroom is crazy slow and the cataloging can cause issues if you move files or switch drives. Bridge is just a browser to look at files. It is like the Library in Lightroom without cataloging. The develope module in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw are the EXACT same program that is why you don't see a difference. Lightroom and ACR are just raw conversion programs. Photoshop is the only true image editing program. I think if comes down to preference. I hate Lightroom's cataloging feature. I wish it could be turned off. And as you noticed it is crazy slow. I use Photo Mechanic instead of Bridge. However if I had the choice between Lightroom and Bridge I would use Bridge for speed. You can just do so much more with Bridge-ACR -Photoshop. Editing in Photoshop is just so much better.

      @@Jcwphoto I have tried AskDamiens 30 day challenge. I tried to do everything in Bridge/ACR as I do in Lightroom and it just seemed more clustered than just using Lightroom. Now with that being said, I pretty much use lightroom for import/export and light edits, all actual editing is done through Photoshop. But I also use Pixieset for website and photogallery and there is a plugin for lightroom that makes uploading easier and faster. I am trying to use bridge but there are things that just don't seem to be as fluid

      Just because one person does not like a program don't let that persuade you. Both get the job done. You should stick with what you prefer. The only part of Lightroom I really like is their bulk export. I use it for my galleries. I upload via ftp. However, I host my own sites. I am not a fan of pay per month web stuff. If you like Lightroom and don't mind the slow imports it is not a big deal. Just beware when you switch hard drives or move files Lightroom will not be able to find the old Files. I am constantly moving folders. I work off an external SSD. As soon as a do I move it to a new drive. The would cause major issues with Lightroom. Nothing that can't be fixed but issues.

    I was thinking that Bridge would be a DAM, but it isn't quite. It's more like a super finder. I say this because it appears that if I delete a file off of my hard drive, Bridge has no recollection of its existence. Am I missing something. A DAM would know that I had a certain asset that is now missing. At least the DAM we used to use did that.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 років тому +1

      Bridge doesn't store your files themselves as far as I'm aware. It's just a super-finder, as you say it yourself - but basically, a DAM kinda IS a super finder... anyway... it's like Photo Mechanic. It doesn't store the file. I learned this the hard way by closing 3 tabs of Photo Mechanic and losing all of my filenames with the right code - I'm a photojournalist so I have a specific code fo follow to name my files for each client.
      As for recollecting the existence of your file, I don't know why exactly Bridge would have to know that this file existed before... since you deleted it. As you said - it's not an editor, so it's not taking a file and opening it.
      It makes a preview jpeg of every photo you load into it that isn't stored in anything but the app, unless you're backing the app itself up. This is why it's fast and that's what you want.
      It is a Digital Assets Manager, and that's... what a Digital Assets Managers is... a DAM never store your files, nor does it need to know where to find them since you do not perform any modification of said file inside it.
      The only thing it does is creating a tiny jpeg copy of your RAW files for fast preview and help you reach the photos stored on your hard drive in a very fast and easy way, as well as helping you selecting and sequencing your pictures.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 років тому

      Maybe the DAM you used knew when an asset was missing, but then maybe that wasn't a DAM. For instance, Lightroom isn't a DAM. Lightroom actually store your files inside of it because you edit them.
