    Don't underestimate the strength of arches! There's a reason why we use them on bridges.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 5 років тому +38

      This wasn't really an example of it being strong because it was an arch. Because the load was applied over the two piers (end points). The strength of arches are exemplified when point-loaded in the center of the span.

    • @swimseven77
      @swimseven77 5 років тому +122

      Actually, both of you are wrong. If he were to press just the center, the legs would have just spread apart and the center would have split. What he did, which was even pressure across the arch, was the correct demonstration of its strength. As far as why we use them on bridges, it's because it's the strongest structure that has an opening in it, and things need to be able to go under the bridge. A solid wall is objectively stronger.

    • @greenanubis
      @greenanubis 5 років тому +6

      Object in question was technically in shape of an arch, but it poorly represents strengths of arch structure. In this example almost all of the stress was concentrated in those two pillars on either end. Real arches have sense because they are able to take bigger loads on curved part, requiring less tensile strength of the material and redirecting load to compressing forces.

      I think that where the arch was loaded is moot in this case. The arch block was stronger because it is better reinforced and has smaller faces that are more rigid and less prone to buckling.

      Me too!
      At 10:10 we have a Force of about 21kN. Since Energy = Force * Distance, and the Distance can be assumed with 3cm (0.03m), that would lead to a required Energy of 630 Joules. Since we have mostly plastic and no elastic deformation, all of it will dissipate as heat. Assuming a weight of 20g and specific heat capacity of around 2.1 kJ / (kg*K) gives us an >average< Temperature increase of 15K / 15°C. But since we have most of the heat being produced at the failure points this might actually give some fancy thermal shots while crushing :)

    Fun stuff! Pretty impressive how much force the Lego bricks took. It didn't actually surpiced me that the Duplo wasn't stronger though
    - the material is thinner compared to the size. Also if something is bigger, means it may actually be easier to crush (unless we are talking about solid blocks of material or an object with a very solid structure) - the levarage when a structure starts to bend get much higher the bigger it is (wich makes it collapse easier).

      That is why many arch bridges are built into hil or cliff sides, as that vertical natural form it's set into help naturally reinforce the arch structure. Sure as he shows it will fail more easily if you put pressure more toward the center. Let's say you use a 4 peg block atop the middle of the arch it will fail under less pressure (weight) as we both know, but without side reinforcement at the ends of the arch like I said of those built into the geography, its anyones wild guess how much (little, less) weight it will endure before the arch fails at the peak which is the weakest point on this arch form.

    Duplo isn't even a different thing than Lego. They're compatible. You can put Lego bricks on Duplo bricks. They're designed to fit together, though differently than they fit onto their own respective type, obviously. Still, you can build mixed Duplo/standard Lego structures.

      None of that matters to my statement. They are produced by the same company, sold under the same brand name (Duplo does have the Lego logo on the packaging, and is also known as "Lego Duplo"), and designed to be mutually compatible for construction. Duplo is a subcategory or variety of Lego, typically meant for younger children, as you correctly pointed out. It's not a separate thing.

    I suggest comparing the pressures required to compress pure elements(the metals 1st, obviously...then the rest of the elements, too). Sort of like a Mohs test for hardness utilizing the hydraulic press so that it is a measure of spread(area) compression instead of point compression.

  • @PiotrBarcz
    @PiotrBarcz Рік тому

    One thing to keep in mind is that the studs don't do anything structurally in a Lego build, they only are there to make the blocks stick, nothing else. The Duplo arch was stronger, not because it was an arch but because the two legs are twice as thick as just the two or three thin walled tubes in a normal duplo brick, same would go for a normal Lego arch and brick. If you put a ton of Lego bricks together and built a big block I believe the weight tolerance would increase exponentially or at least would be more than the added sum of all the individual brick tolerances. You could quite easily build a house from them and if you included technic beams which are also incredibly strong you could most certainly make large structures with the right building technique.

  • @mptystring7892
    @mptystring7892 5 років тому +3

    I think you should generally increase the quality of your methods and measurements. People praise "science" here in the comments, but just crushing bricks without doing some thinking first doesn't follow the scientific method very well. Your work in getting people interested in the STEM field is very important. You are/were students of technology after all. Kai on fytyt käyty?
    I also think employing the scientific method in your videos wouldn't make them less entertaining or too formal. Though it would mean you'd have to do some more background research, develop a hypothesis, do reliable repeatable tests and report your results. In the reports (=videos), it would be great if you linked your hypothesis and results to theory.
    Regarding this video, I think you should have tested the bricks in a more controlled manner. By stacking two and measuring how much pressure that combination can withstand, you can get results that better relate to real use cases, like how much force the bottom brick in a structure can actually hold. When measuring only a single brick, you don't take the possibly weakening effect of malforming the top attaching mechanism into account. You could have the top brick have a smooth-top flat piece attached on top of them. That would mitigate the loss of strength that might be caused by first malforming the top connectors.
    To get an accurate measurement result you should stop adding more pressure once the brick starts yielding. It wouldn't hurt to do more measurements and showcase them quickly in parallel.
    A general tip for any video: Adding a thermal camera to visualize stress would give you much more to work with when evaluating the crushing result.
