Yes that right. She consented to it at the time but it got to her over the film. Also she said "I dont like not being in control" so it played on her mind what happened while she was out of it
Fun Fact about Candyman. When they filmed at the projects real gang members were there and refused to leave their turf until the director hired them to play gang members. They got paid so they jumped at it and the rest is history. More then likely wanted to be the noticed for films and they were great at their roles for non actors so they were trained well for the roles at short notice. Also its explained why he hates being called Candyman in the sequel. He is re-living his murder by a mob and what their kids called him 5 times endlessly. Helen looks like his lover then but the sequels they are his bloodline from his original lover he died for
This was the first Clive Barker movie I saw on TV back in the 1990's! I saw this when I was 5 years old, i had nightmares for a long time! There is a sequel to the film released in 2021. It involves a character from the first film and what his connection is to Candyman. It was released during the George Floyd protests following his death in 2020.
Thank you. There were two sequels, "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh" (1995) and "Candyman: Day of the Dead" (1999), neither of which was well received, the third worse than the second. They did try to expand on the lore and it is possible they are better than I remember. The "Candyman" (2021) is a direct, and very strong, sequel to the first movie reframing some events rather than rewriting them. It is a very good movie, probably even better than the first, but it is so bleak. Too bleak for me to love it as I do the first, but what do I know. The student might not be in luck since the blood on her knife might no have exonerated her. D.N.A. testing for the purpose of criminal investigation was first used during the investigation of the deaths of two teenagers murdered in Narborough, Leicestershire, U.K. in 1983 and 1986. D.N.A. testing was not universally accepted in the U.S. criminal system during the eighties and nineties often being disputed in the courts. Stephen Fry played Dr. Gordon Gordon Wyatt a psychiatrist on seasons 2, 4, 5, and 12 of "Bones" T.V. series.
Cracked up at the Nic Cage in the Wicker man remake reference. Btw, Tony Todd seems genuinely awesome. Dead Meat has an interview with him on their channel. He's very charming.
Here's some facts for you Clive Barker had nothing to do with this movie. He only wrote the short story The Forbidden. That this movie is based on I will say loosely based on because if you read it or look it up. In Clive Barkers short story The Forbidden the character the candyman is a white character. So basically the writer an director read the short story The Forbidden. Then changed basically everything from Clive Barkers original short story its based on. This is why after this movie Clive Barker started. To make his own short story's into movies because everyone else took his short story's. Then changed it from the story he was telling in them into completely different story's. When they made them into movies by completely altering the characters an story plots. So by making the movies himself he could keep the movies as true to the short story's as he wanted. Basically he could keep the same story in the movie as it was in the short story he originally wrote. Because when others made them into movies they would alter the movies. Into something completely different from the short story's he wrote. This movie is a prime example of that. On the Shout/ Scream Factory edition of Nightbreed the Directors cut. On the audio commentary with Clive Barker an on literally every single bonus feature. Clive Barker an every one that worked on the movie all say the same thing. That is the movie studio completely to put it polity majorly FT up the movie. The movie studio cut so much of the movie that it's not even the same movie that was in the script or screenplay. It's not even the same movie they filmed in the first place. Because the movie studio didn't like Clive Barkers story being told in the movie. So they cut scenes out an added scenes to make it into a slasher movie. Wich completely ignores the original story being told in the story Cabal. Wich Clive Barker was telling in the Nightbreed movie. This is another reason to get Directors cuts of movies. I say Directors cuts but that's just one name for them another is unrelated version an there is other names for it. But regardless of what name it goes under they all have one thing in common. That is it's the movie that the writers an directors wanted to make an did make. Before the movie studios interfered an alterd the movie away from the story that the writers an directors of the movie. Wanted to tell when they made the movie in the first place.
Who can take a sunrise (who can take a sunrise), Sprinkle it with dew (sprinkle it with dew), Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?..... sorry wrong Candyman. Clive Barker is just too good at disturbing audiences with his work. I like Candyman but Nightbreed is my favourite. Again, I am loving your reactions.
Love those Shout/Scream special editions, they do such a good job with those, especially bonus features. And the original Candyman is one of my favorites, so I'm looking forward to seeing you do this one. :) Edit: Oh, that Phillip Glass score! Such a wonderful tone it sets. And that echoing filter they put on Tony Todd's voice... perfection! Edit - Final Thoughts: I was waiting to see if you'd going into this... what I really love about the movie is the nature of belief in empowering the spirits. Candyman is a spirit of vengeance, but as long as his "congregation" believes, and he gains power from that belief, he seems content, only appearing when he is summoned. But when that belief is thrown into doubt, he has to appear and restore the belief. Because of his nature, this means doing evil deeds. But he's a spirit of vengeance because he died from being tortured and murdered when all he was guilty of was love. Helen, on the other hand, died wile protecting Cabrini Green from the Candyman, and while saving the baby. The people of The Green not only believe in her, they revere her. They all show up to pay their respects at the funeral, and give her the hook. She's not a spirit of vengeance seeking to hurt the living, she's a spirit of justice seeking to punish the wicked. Which I think is why she guts Trevor but leaves the student alone. And I love that about this film, that both spirits are empowered by belief, but the nature of their deaths determines the nature of the spirits. It makes me wonder, if bad people are doing something bad to the people of The Green, if they can say her name five times and have her appear, not to harm them, but to punish those who threaten them. (A note - I haven't seen the recent sequel and don't plan to, as what little I've heard about it makes me think they completely changed all the stuff that made me love the original in order to be able to both bring back the title character and to make it a whole social commentary thing instead of just a gripping, spooky, well-told horror film. Plus it didn't involve Barker. So I don't consider it canon, just as I don't consider the older sequels canon.)
There was a lot of truth in the film. The stuff about the projects and condos is true. The gang members are actual gang members. The sequels are meh, but the requel is pretty good.
16:47 Tony Todd was also one of Top Dollar's henchmen in the original Crow, the voice of Zoom in the CW Flash show and most recently Venom in the newest Spider-Man game.
Philip Glass has scored several movies, this being the only horror one the rest are more art house like Mishima : A Life in Four Chapters and Koyaanisqatsi both films well worth watching
We have no clue if the husband was a cheater or not. you can make assumption. I think he was admirably supportive of his psychotic wife in the beginning and deserves respect for not immediately turning his back on her the second she was implicated for butchering a baby. The ending shows her truly loved her, and his "jumping on the bed" with enthusiasm shows he still had lots of excitement and passion for her. The narrator in the movie is very untrustworthy and prone to misleading, so its gullible to assume you can just follow the implications and trust them. The fact that he moved on after a month is the only "crime" the husband committed with certainty. The movie has a LOT of flaws, but the concept (and probably the book) was so good it rose above those flaws. The main female character was weak and the actress was weak. Tony saved the movie from the B-rated trash heap, imo.
FUN FACT: Virginia Madsen is allergic to bees, they had emts on set and sprayed her with a pheromones so the bees wouldn't sting her meanwhile Tony Todd negotiated to get an extra $1000 for every bee sting he recieved which was 23 total.
Candyman should be more popular, this is much better than the first Friday the 13th. One of my favorite horror movies
To me still the best horror film ever made. The music, the casting (everyone), the eerie atmosphere ... perfect!
Virginia Madsen actually got hypnotized for some scenes. Eventually she asked not to. It became too much emotionally
Yes that right. She consented to it at the time but it got to her over the film. Also she said "I dont like not being in control" so it played on her mind what happened while she was out of it
@flatcapman Yes exactly! I do compliment how her wishes were respected after she made it known

"what do you know about candyman"? .."uhh,...he can"? Yeah, I'm stoned, that was funny at the time.."MUNCHIES?!?" Now you're talkin my language! 🤣🤣🤣

you are not wrong about being in a trance, they actually hypnotised Virginia Madsen for several scenes
Genuinely scary horror movie. Phenomenal and haunting score.
Tony Todd also played Worf's brother in Star Trek The Next Generation.
Thank you.

It's just a puppet to make it look real.
I had seen this movie years ago. I just don't understand why he's called Candyman?
The baby's fine.
Is that a board on the wall?
Philip Glass has scored several movies, this being the only horror one the rest are more art house like Mishima : A Life in Four Chapters and Koyaanisqatsi both films well worth watching
As much as I love TT, I just find Candyman's storyline boring, personally. Not Tony's fault though, imo.
