I like that Candyman is such a tragic "villain". Adds so much to the story and makes you feel sympathy. Well, a bit less with the ending of people. lol. And you have the great Tony Todd with that voice and just how he carries himself in every role. He deserved a much better career.
Oh wow...I saw a lot of movies (I probably shouldn't have seen) when I was 5 and 6, but this wasn't one of them! Movies that weren't even supposed to be really scary (like "Nell" and "Copycat") scared me at that age, so this would have horrified me, 100%. lol
In addition to allowing the filmmakers to cover his face with bees, Tony Todd actually agreed to film a scene in which he had a mouthful of bees--and that, too, was all real. He told TMZ that he wore a dental dam to prevent any bees from sliding into his throat--which doesn't mean that he didn't suffer a sting or two or 23, to be exact, over the course of three Candyman movies. Though it might have been worth it. "I had a great lawyer," he told TMZ. "A thousand dollars a pop.
This movie definitely does have sequels. _Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh_ and _Candyman: Day of the Dead._ I'm glad they stopped there, because it started to get repetitive, but I found them entertaining. Tony Todd reprises his role as the Daniel Robitaille/Candyman in both of them. Regarding this one, Helen was always drawn to Candyman. Her fascination with the Candyman urban legend is pretty much what set all of these events in motion.
This is my favorite horror movie, very well filmed, great soundtrack by Philip Glass, excellent acting by the 2 leads. Helen died but she became an urban legend which is a form of immortality.
If you want another Clive Barker book adaptation that doesn't see nearly enough love, watch the director's cut of Nightbreed. Barker directed it himself (as he also did with the first Hellraiser movie). & one of it's stars is Director David Cronenberg who you may remember from The Fly. As for Tony Todd, He's been in so many things, but I first remember him first from playing Worf's brother Kurn on Star Trek: TNG. & I remember him most from his role in The Crow, which is an absolute must see movie.
....I am ashamed that I didn't recall his roles in TNG or The Crow. Although, I have only seen The Crow once (years ago) and some episodes of TNG only once as well (there are actually some episodes I still haven't seen!)...but either way, considering how much I love TNG, I feel as thought I should have known that. I was supposed to meet Tony Todd at London Comic Con last year but he had to cancel last minute. Wanted to tell him he's cool and that I love his voice as Zoom in The Flash tv show, Venom in the Spider-Man 2 game and Scare Glow in Masters of the Universe: Revelation/Revolution (of which I have the action figure of I wanted him to hold in the photo I had booked). Was quite sad not to get to see him. However I did get to see Karen Gillan and get a photo with her and she's frickin' gorgeous and adorable so the trip to the convention wasn't a total loss, eh? :D
Ummm. Definitely not a total loss!! I love that you saw Karen Gillan (me being the Doctor Who fan I am). I've seen (and had pictures with) Arthur Darvill and Alex Kingston at DragonCon, but not Karen yet (which is crazy, considering she's worked more here in Georgia (for Marvel movies), than Arthur or Alex ever has worked here. haha I have many friends who have worked with her on set, but the only Marvel movie I ever worked on (as a background actor) was Spider-man: Homecoming. I would LOVE to go to London Comic Con. I have a lot of gamer friends from the U.K., and so many of the books I read take place there, so it's on my list to visit as soon as possible and adding a convention in the mix would be epic. Yeah, Tony Todd (Candyman) has a cool/creepy voice. He was fantastic as a Klingon on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Worf's brother, as well as an emotional episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine which showed his acting chops in drama as an adult Jake Sisko.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia about Tony Todd's appearance in DS9 episode "The Visitor". Three months before shooting, Tony's aunt died. He was heartbroken as she had raised him, made his the man he is. He says that getting that script felt like a gift from her, basically bringing him back to life.
"Is she gonna be Candyman?" I wish. Virginia Madsen taking up the mantle of Candyman (Candyperson?) would have been awesome and I do love that she shows up after her name is said. She does not return for the sequels but Tony Todd does. For a revenge thriller with Virginia Madsen - Blue Tiger She's also the original Irulan in Dune 1984 (Florence Pugh plays the role in Part 2) but only appears in the beginning and end depending on the version.
I actually watched this as a teenager, after school in the cinema on it's first release. It really struck a chord with me. I felt it was better than it had any right to be and got me into Clive Barker's work.

I have this movie on limited edition blu ray from Arrow Video Films , It is based on the short Story "The Forbidden" by Clive Barker (featured in Volume 5 of his Books of Blood series of books) ( Tony Todd reprised the role in 2 sequels)

Candyman (1992) First, let me try something... *stares into mirror* Angel Groves Angel Groves Angel Groves Angel Groves Angel Groves Hmm.. It was worth a shot. So while I put out the candles and stick this champagne back on ice, you can be my victim... of reading these notes. 🐝 •At the time of filming and release, Cabrini Green was a real development in Chicago. Director Bernard Rose knew he had to film there to cultivate the atmosphere they were going for. In order to film there, they had to negotiate with local gang members, who agreed with some being extras on set in order to film on location without fear of harassment or sabotage. It was reported that even on the last day of filming, a sniper sent a parting gift by shooting a bullet into a window of a production van. •The bees were bred specifically for this movie. They needed to make sure that the bees were only twelve hours old so that while they looked like mature bees, their stingers wouldn't be powerful enough to do any real damage. •Tony Todd negotiated a bonus of $1,000 for every bee sting he suffered during filming; he was stung between 23-26 times. •Meanwhile, Virginia Madsen is allergic to bees and was concerned that she wouldn't be able to participate in this film, but after being tutored by the Bee Wrangler on how to deal with bees, she was able to power through her scenes without incident and says of her experience that while there were times she was feeling restless and wanting to freak out, she still felt like a badass for doing it. She goes on to say that director Bernard Rose even had her meet with a hypnotherapist to help put her in a trance for some of her early scenes, afterwards she said she didn't enjoy it, so it was no longer used afterwards. •So not to give you the heebie-jeebies, but the part about the killer breaking in through behind the medicine cabinet was not something made up for the film. While doing research in the area, Bernard Rose found out that there was actually a series of murders in the Chicago area where the Killer broke in from behind the medicine cabinet and was specifically inspired by the murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy, a resident of Chicago's Abbot Homes housing project. •The effects crew had a blacksmith make Candyman's hook, but when they went to pick it up, the blacksmith refused to sell it to them because he'd heard it was for a Clive Barker horror movie, and as a devout Christian, the blacksmith had misgivings about the project. •Viewers may think of Candyman as one of the horror genre's most terrifying villains, but both Tony Todd and Bernard Rose imagined the character as more of a tortured romantic figure, akin to an Edgar Allan Poe story: "It's the romance of death. He's a ghost, and he's also the resurrection of something that is kind of unspoken or unspeakable in American history, which is slavery, as well. So he's kind of come back, and he's haunting what the new version of the racial segregation in Chicago. And I think there's also something very seductive and very sweet and very romantic about him, and that's what makes him interesting. In the same way, there is about Dracula. In the end, the Bogeyman is someone you want to surrender to. You're not just afraid of. There's a certain kind of joy in his seduction. Tony Todd was always so romantic. Tony ties him in so elegantly and is such a gentleman. He was wonderful." •To help build that chemistry Between Madsen and Todd, director Bernard Rose had them take ballroom dancing classes to establish an emotional connection that paid off very well. •Tony Todd helped Flesh out the Candyman's backstory, including being the son of a slave, as well as the forbidden love affair that culminated in his death. When the project was first being announced, he fought very hard to get the role, as he believed that it was history in the making for a serious black horror film and wanted to both be apart of it and saw it as his potential Phantom of the Opera, or Jason or a Freddy for Black America. And it's something he's been a part of in all the series, from the direct video sequels in the 90s to the reboot/sequel from a couple of years ago. •The film's opening credits feature a great aerial view of Chicago, which was pretty revolutionary for its time. "We did that with an incredible new machine called the Skycam, which can shoot up to a 500 mm lens with no vibration," Bernard Rose told The Independent. "You've never seen that shot before, at least not done that smoothly." •When Philip Glass signed on to compose the score for Candyman, he apparently envisioned the final film being something totally different. According to Rolling Stone, "What he'd presumed would be an artful version of Clive Barker's short story 'The Forbidden' had ended up, in his view, a low-budget slasher film" Glass was reportedly disappointed in the film, and felt that he had been manipulated. Still, the haunting music is considered a classic score--and Glass' own view of it seems to have softened over time. The new Hulu version of Hellraiser starring Jamie Clayton as the Hell Priest is fantastic. She brings a different yet just as intense energy to the character.

They are a guilty pleasure, and worth a watch some time. Director Clive Barker is probably best known from the "Hellraiser" films that started in the 80s. You are doing a great job! 80s horror into the early 90s was probably the best time ever for horror to date. The sequels are not as good as this film. Great reactions to the original Candyman film, Angel!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 That is cool you remember Tony Todd from "Hellblazers".

Not a sci fi horror, but a psychological horror, i really felt for you, i could feel the terror running through you. I saw this at the cinema and on the way out they had some mirrors i was the only one out of group of friends to say candyman 5 times, friends were freaking out 😂😂
I slept on this movie for so long, I knew it was a franchise with a terrible case of sequelitis where the general consensus is that 'the first is good but ignore the rest'. As such I never gave it a chance, thankfully I eventually remedied my ways and was blown away just how good this movie was - not only for the the music, performances (holy hell, tony todd's voice), but the genuinely interesting and relatively uncommonly explored nuances around urban legends / myths / local lore etc.

Not so much a fun Fact but, in 1987, Ruthie Mae McCoy was found murdered inside her Chicago apartment after telling police that someone was trying to break in through her bathroom mirror.
🤘I'd first seen your reaction to 'They Live' by John Carpenter (which I LOVE btw) and had actually searched for a reaction to it and yours was the 1st to pop up, and I must say that after only recently being exposed to your reactions I simply love your VIBE!! You are so cool 'n hilarious...and I love how-dare I say-awkward you can be at times! So your job is easy: ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS BE YOU...and we come along for the ride!! The blurring of the "you-know-whats" near the very end of the movie (just before Helen killed her Ex in their old apartment's bathroom) was unexpectedly funny...but I guess it is warranted...💩 I guess, I'll have to look into 'Hell Fest' now, and the next closest "intense" movie to 'Candyman' I can think of would have to be 'Silence of the Lambs' but I am sure you must have already reacted to that. And just so you know, 'The Thing' by John Carpenter (which does have a sequel fyi) is also another freaky film worth watching if you haven't already. And yes, the soundtrack to 'Candyman' by Phillip Glass is TOTALLY LEGIT...and I have got to get around to buying the whole thing as it is top notch and is nearly a character in the movie...and sure sets an eerie mood, indeed. 🐝🚽 Candyman is the last great Supernatural Horror Slasher. I need me a sympathetic Slasher killer. Give me the grief of a Pumpkinhead, or the Vengance of a Voorhees, but maybe even more than Frankenstein's Monster, I feel like Candyman is the most sympathetic Slasher Villain of all time! He was an Artist, so they sawed off his hand. He found love, so they took his life. I support Candyman's decisions in this film 🍬 😂🍬
In the original script, he wasn't an artist but a known "play boy"/ladies man, I guess they changed him into an artist to make him more sympathetic. It's funny you can still see elements of it by his "seductive" way of speaking. In the original idea he wouldn't just show up and take you out but "talk you into allowing him to take you out", you can also see it in this film with him trying to talk Helen into oblivion and why he seems so upset with tears when she refuses. I feel obligated to tell every person who reacts to this movie that the Cabrini-Green housing project was real (Chicago, IL), and people did break into other people's apartments via removing the medicine cabinet. Some got robbed/burglarized and some people actually were murdered that way.

Tony Todd is a genre legend, he's in loads of films. This one is great, classic. I'd stop there to be honest, you're not missing anything by skipping the follow ups. There is a recent remake which is beyond awful, whoever directed that should never sit in the chair again, I managed thirty mins before turning it off, leave the classics alone. I'll recommend "Trainspotting (1996)" to you for no other reason than the "worst toilet in Scotland" 😆

Never read "The Forbidden" which is what "Candyman" was adapted from. I saw "Candyman" when it opened in theatres and was immediately taken by the atmosphere and score. Tony Todd was great as "Candyman" and Virginia Madsen was fantastic as Helen. I would have loved to have seen her carry on the mantel of "Candyman" but alas that never happened. If you enjoyed "Candyman" give "The Midnight Meat Train" a watch; it stars Bradley Cooper...wait a minute. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Crap!
The elements are there just different locale and rules. In the short, your disbelief will make him show up, you don't have to say his name. His appearance is different as well and the townsfolks are all in on it if I remember correctly.

Hmm.. It was worth a shot. So while I put out the candles and stick this champagne back on ice, you can be my victim... of reading these notes. 🐝
•At the time of filming and release, Cabrini Green was a real development in Chicago. Director Bernard Rose knew he had to film there to cultivate the atmosphere they were going for. In order to film there, they had to negotiate with local gang members, who agreed with some being extras on set in order to film on location without fear of harassment or sabotage. It was reported that even on the last day of filming, a sniper sent a parting gift by shooting a bullet into a window of a production van.
•The bees were bred specifically for this movie. They needed to make sure that the bees were only twelve hours old so that while they looked like mature bees, their stingers wouldn't be powerful enough to do any real damage.
•Tony Todd negotiated a bonus of $1,000 for every bee sting he suffered during filming; he was stung between 23-26 times.
•Meanwhile, Virginia Madsen is allergic to bees and was concerned that she wouldn't be able to participate in this film, but after being tutored by the Bee Wrangler on how to deal with bees, she was able to power through her scenes without incident and says of her experience that while there were times she was feeling restless and wanting to freak out, she still felt like a badass for doing it. She goes on to say that director Bernard Rose even had her meet with a hypnotherapist to help put her in a trance for some of her early scenes, afterwards she said she didn't enjoy it, so it was no longer used afterwards.
•So not to give you the heebie-jeebies, but the part about the killer breaking in through behind the medicine cabinet was not something made up for the film. While doing research in the area, Bernard Rose found out that there was actually a series of murders in the Chicago area where the Killer broke in from behind the medicine cabinet and was specifically inspired by the murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy, a resident of Chicago's Abbot Homes housing project.
•The effects crew had a blacksmith make Candyman's hook, but when they went to pick it up, the blacksmith refused to sell it to them because he'd heard it was for a Clive Barker horror movie, and as a devout Christian, the blacksmith had misgivings about the project.
•Viewers may think of Candyman as one of the horror genre's most terrifying villains, but both Tony Todd and Bernard Rose imagined the character as more of a tortured romantic figure, akin to an Edgar Allan Poe story: "It's the romance of death. He's a ghost, and he's also the resurrection of something that is kind of unspoken or unspeakable in American history, which is slavery, as well. So he's kind of come back, and he's haunting what the new version of the racial segregation in Chicago. And I think there's also something very seductive and very sweet and very romantic about him, and that's what makes him interesting. In the same way, there is about Dracula. In the end, the Bogeyman is someone you want to surrender to. You're not just afraid of. There's a certain kind of joy in his seduction. Tony Todd was always so romantic. Tony ties him in so elegantly and is such a gentleman. He was wonderful."
•To help build that chemistry Between Madsen and Todd, director Bernard Rose had them take ballroom dancing classes to establish an emotional connection that paid off very well.
•Tony Todd helped Flesh out the Candyman's backstory, including being the son of a slave, as well as the forbidden love affair that culminated in his death. When the project was first being announced, he fought very hard to get the role, as he believed that it was history in the making for a serious black horror film and wanted to both be apart of it and saw it as his potential Phantom of the Opera, or Jason or a Freddy for Black America. And it's something he's been a part of in all the series, from the direct video sequels in the 90s to the reboot/sequel from a couple of years ago.
•The film's opening credits feature a great aerial view of Chicago, which was pretty revolutionary for its time. "We did that with an incredible new machine called the Skycam, which can shoot up to a 500 mm lens with no vibration," Bernard Rose told The Independent. "You've never seen that shot before, at least not done that smoothly."
•When Philip Glass signed on to compose the score for Candyman, he apparently envisioned the final film being something totally different. According to Rolling Stone, "What he'd presumed would be an artful version of Clive Barker's short story 'The Forbidden' had ended up, in his view, a low-budget slasher film" Glass was reportedly disappointed in the film, and felt that he had been manipulated. Still, the haunting music is considered a classic score--and Glass' own view of it seems to have softened over time. "It has become a classic, so I still make money from that score, get checks every year," he told Variety in 2014.

The new Hulu version of Hellraiser starring Jamie Clayton as the Hell Priest is fantastic. She brings a different yet just as intense energy to the character.

They are a guilty pleasure, and worth a watch some time. Director Clive Barker is probably best known from the "Hellraiser" films that started in the 80s. You are doing a great job! 80s horror into the early 90s was probably the best time ever for horror to date. The sequels are not as good as this film. Great reactions to the original Candyman film, Angel!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 That is cool you remember Tony Todd from "Hellblazers".

Clive Barker also wrote and directed the underrated "Nightbreed" (1990).. see the Directors Cut if you can, its the far better version.

Not a sci fi horror, but a psychological horror, i really felt for you, i could feel the terror running through you.
I saw this at the cinema and on the way out they had some mirrors i was the only one out of group of friends to say candyman 5 times, friends were freaking out 😂😂
I slept on this movie for so long, I knew it was a franchise with a terrible case of sequelitis where the general consensus is that 'the first is good but ignore the rest'. As such I never gave it a chance, thankfully I eventually remedied my ways and was blown away just how good this movie was - not only for the the music, performances (holy hell, tony todd's voice), but the genuinely interesting and relatively uncommonly explored nuances around urban legends / myths / local lore etc.

Not so much a fun Fact but, in 1987, Ruthie Mae McCoy was found murdered inside her Chicago apartment after telling police that someone was trying to break in through her bathroom mirror.

The blurring of the "you-know-whats" near the very end of the movie (just before Helen killed her Ex in their old apartment's bathroom) was unexpectedly funny...but I guess it is warranted...💩
I guess, I'll have to look into 'Hell Fest' now, and the next closest "intense" movie to 'Candyman' I can think of would have to be 'Silence of the Lambs' but I am sure you must have already reacted to that.
And just so you know, 'The Thing' by John Carpenter (which does have a sequel fyi) is also another freaky film worth watching if you haven't already. And yes, the soundtrack to 'Candyman' by Phillip Glass is TOTALLY LEGIT...and I have got to get around to buying the whole thing as it is top notch and is nearly a character in the movie...and sure sets an eerie mood, indeed.

🐝🚽 Candyman is the last great Supernatural Horror Slasher. I need me a sympathetic Slasher killer. Give me the grief of a Pumpkinhead, or the Vengance of a Voorhees, but maybe even more than Frankenstein's Monster, I feel like Candyman is the most sympathetic Slasher Villain of all time! He was an Artist, so they sawed off his hand. He found love, so they took his life. I support Candyman's decisions in this film 🍬 😂🍬
In the original script, he wasn't an artist but a known "play boy"/ladies man, I guess they changed him into an artist to make him more sympathetic. It's funny you can still see elements of it by his "seductive" way of speaking. In the original idea he wouldn't just show up and take you out but "talk you into allowing him to take you out", you can also see it in this film with him trying to talk Helen into oblivion and why he seems so upset with tears when she refuses. I feel obligated to tell every person who reacts to this movie that the Cabrini-Green housing project was real (Chicago, IL), and people did break into other people's apartments via removing the medicine cabinet.
Some got robbed/burglarized and some people actually were murdered that way.

Tony Todd is a genre legend, he's in loads of films. This one is great, classic. I'd stop there to be honest, you're not missing anything by skipping the follow ups. There is a recent remake which is beyond awful, whoever directed that should never sit in the chair again, I managed thirty mins before turning it off, leave the classics alone. I'll recommend "Trainspotting (1996)" to you for no other reason than the "worst toilet in Scotland" 😆

Never read "The Forbidden" which is what "Candyman" was adapted from. I saw "Candyman" when it opened in theatres and was immediately taken by the atmosphere and score. Tony Todd was great as "Candyman" and Virginia Madsen was fantastic as Helen. I would have loved to have seen her carry on the mantel of "Candyman" but alas that never happened. If you enjoyed "Candyman" give "The Midnight Meat Train" a watch; it stars Bradley Cooper...wait a minute. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Crap!
The elements are there just different locale and rules. In the short, your disbelief will make him show up, you don't have to say his name. His appearance is different as well and the townsfolks are all in on it if I remember correctly.
The remake is an abomination, but the sequel from 1995 isn't too bad actually.

LOL. I actually am quite pale (when I stay inside for a bit...tan when I actually get in the sun! haha) but this is not the typical lighting/ permanent lighting setup.
As I said during the intro of this video, "Apologies for the lighting", since this setup was just thrown together in the living room, after my move.
