    I moved to Australia many years ago .I live in Adelaide . I still have 6 brothers and 5 sisters in Ireland and try and get home every 4 years.. I so happy you love Ireland. For different reason over our history we have had to leave our homes , in my case to earn money to help my Mum and Dad to cloth and feed my younger brothers and sisters. Still love and miss Ireland

      James's sister lives in Australia. We would love to go visit them one day, the climate there is very similar to South Africa. That must've been quite hard to move so far away and leave your family behind.

    Thanks for this.. I am American, but my roots are in Ireland.. I have traveled all over the world, and by far, my favorite people are the Irish.. The kindest and most generous of all of the countries... There is just something that I cannot put my finger on.. That is extra special about the people of Ireland.. ( I believe the Irish peoplet should be number 1 on your list) Your list pretty much nailed this magnificent Island..

      Hi Dan. Thank you for the comment. It's amazing how we can take things that 'work' for granted until they don't. South Africa suffers from power outages and water outages daily, something I haven't had to deal with now for nearly 3 years. I'm so grateful, but take it completely for granted that we have power 24/7 here.

    I'm living in Scotland and the friendliness and weather are the same. I lived in the states for many years and the gun violence, racism, and cost of living are overwhelming. I'm originally from Scotland although half my family originated from Ireland and I still have family there. I will be moving there after the holidays. One of my friends in England has relocated there from South Africa with her husband and children. I am happy you are safe with your family.

    • @impromptuimmigrants
      @impromptuimmigrants  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Lucille! Thank you so much for your comment. The sense of safety is something James and I talk about a lot! It's something we will never take for granted. It took quite awhile to 'relax' and stop worrying. I think that constant anxiety and worry stays with you for a long time. Living behind bars and barricades leaves you feeling quite mentally exhausted, that's something we realised after moving here. The stress wasn't there anymore and for the first time we slept in peace.

    Glad you and your family are happy in the land I was born in.I've lived in America most of my adult life but still go back to Cork for visits.It is very safe compared to many countries but there are parts of Dublin that you have to be a bit cautious in .But that holds true for most large cities worldwide.
    You have the right personality for Ireland and you and the beautiful baby are a welcome addition to my country.💚

      @@impromptuimmigrants You are very welcome .I keep up with all the news worldwide and SA has always been a country of interest for me.I've met some South Africans here in New Jersey where I live and across the river in NYC where I work so I'm quite well acquainted with the land and it's history.
      Actually my grand uncle ,Thomas Lynch ,fought in the Boer War .He was in the British Army .But that was when Ireland was under the Brits so we must forgive him!
      .The biggest problem you might have in the coming years is who will you shout for if Ireland play SA in the Rugby World Cup that's coming up next year?I'll leave you on that note! All the best to you and yours.! 🇮🇪

    What a lovely positive video. Your list also has a few surprises (like the weather and the postal system!) so it was interesting to hear. I am sorry that you had to leave your original home but I am delighted that you have found a new home here. Did you find the lack of sunshine in the winter months a problem when you first came? I have heard others who come from sunnier countries say that it can really affect you (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

    • @impromptuimmigrants
      @impromptuimmigrants  2 роки тому +10

      I must say this winter did feel quite long and the short days with minimal sunshine can start to affect you. I made sure we all took vitamin d and tried to make the house as light as possible. But even with that there were days when you feel a little low mood wise which I'm sure has to do with the darkness. I do love Christmas though so that's a great distraction!

  • @heffo67
    @heffo67 2 роки тому +17

    Rainy dull days can get on top of you here but when you think about it, we are lucky with the weather in Ireland.
    It never gets to ridiculously low temperatures. Just 2 winters in my 48years (2009 & 2010).
    We don't get those heatwaves that leave people dead.
    We get plenty of wind and storms but not to the extent which wipe out towns and flatten multitudes of buildings.
    It doesn't rain a lot here, it just rains very often. We don't get Monsoons.
    Then because of all that regular rain the place is so very green and when the sun does come out the place glistens.
    I'm happy that you have found joy in our mossy forests and woods. Aren't they magical?!?

    • @impromptuimmigrants
      @impromptuimmigrants  2 роки тому +2

      The forests are so magical. I often send the kids to look for fairy doors. The winters haven't been too bad yet. Coming from South Africa where seasons don't change too dramatically, we have adjusted quite well. The long summer days definitely make up for the dreary winter. Thank you so much for your comment :-)

    Just found your channel, I’m also from ZA and moved here a few months ago, I am absolutely stunned by the place, I live in Bray now, I get the train to work and everyone chats to me every morning and every evening, the people are so nice and I think it rubs off on the people who are not from here but like us have moved here because I have meet people from all over the world and they are so nice and friendly too. I am Xhosa and was very worried about moving to a new place but I have never felt so safe and accepted in my life, my wife and children absolutely love it here every day they have a new story to tell about the wonderful people they have met, we were very worried about our eldest going to a new school but she has just loved it and through her my wife has met some great friends, have you noticed that they “ pop” in for a coffee and a chat randomly,no call or plan just arrive? When we moved in ( the day) the lady next door arrived over and said we had to go in for dinner to her house as we were too busy to get dinner and wouldn’t take no for an answer the kids were tired and cranky but she just feed us a lovely meal and her children cheered up ours it was the best thing we ever got. I have to admit I was a bit racist when I was moving here and expected all white people to be negative but it is not at all like that, I am sorry now for what I thought, I just wanted to say I love my new home and my family are so happy that we are living here now, I bought a car a few weeks ago so we could explore more of the country now that the children are on holidays from school, the time off I get here is also a shock. Now that you have an Irish baby does that make you an Irish mammy?

South Africa will always be in our blood and I long for it daily but this is the decision we have made. The lifestyle here is an outdoors one... even with all the rain! The winter can be hard but I try keep my mind on all the positives and the reason why we moved. Wishing you all the best!

Glad to see you settled there, so much nicer than Dublin and cheaper too. I see you were in Mahon Falls, the best time to see it is after heavy rain. Happy you like the weather,most people think it rains all the time but as you see it doesn't and we don't get extremes, never too hot or cold and we have that lovely soft rain . It's a wonderful place for children.

    I love the Irish postal system. I live in Belgium where the town tall that is an 8 minute walk from my house, sends me a letter and it arrives two weeks later. Getting packages delivered is a nightmare here, ending up in 'holding centres in Ghent' for months on end. When I send stuff to Ireland, it arrives within the week. I try to avoid using the public postal system as much as possible. Otherwise, I do love it here.

    • @impromptuimmigrants

      The postal system is amazing! In South Africa there is never a guarantee of anything ever arriving. I don't even send postcards back to my family as it will take months and months to get there. I don't dare send packages as they will more than likely never arrive unless I pay many €€€ for a courier service. I'm surprised to hear that you battle in Belgium with post. Really shouldn't be a complicated thing at all!

      Belgium... oh my.....Its like the drunk Uncle of Europe. Everything takes forever, and when you ask why something doesn't work, the standard reply is "Its like this in Belgium". It has to be the most bureaucratic useless country in Western Europe. Last December we notified the syndic of our apartment that there was a water leak in the roof which they are responsible for. They were supposed to fix it in the Spring but it was too wet, then they re-scheduled to July, they didn't turn up and now have re-scheduled to August cos its too warm. They are totally Useless but don't get it when you complain cos "that's the way it is in Belgium".

    Just came across this so apologies for the late comment.
    Firstly, we live in Athlone in Ireland (I'm Irish) so your lovely comments are much appreciated. You seem honest/ genuine and for the most part I agreed with your points. The weather....Mmmm...not so sure, however when its sunny in Ireland I agree its stunning, but so much rain 😞
    We had a lovely couple from South Africa living next to us a few years ago. I asked them what they liked most about Ireland and they said "Things work". In my experience the South Africans that I have met are so talented and capable so for them living in a country where so much doesn't work, I can imagine the frustration. Providing a safe and secure environment for its people should be the first and most important priority of any government, but alas in SA its a mess.
    Its funny, when that couple moved next door I got the impression that they were sometimes a little nervous or hesitant when we were offering them help or advice. Its very normal here (especially outside of Dublin) for people to help their neighbours and total strangers to be honest. Thankfully, that's something that still persists. I remember as a child if someone's car broke down near us, the farmers would nearly be fighting with each other to help the stranded person out !
    One of the downsides of everything working also is the cost. I'm sure that you aghast sometimes at how expensive things are in Ireland. Sometimes, I think that we are too rich because we seem willing to pay such exorbitant prices for goods and services. The very same goods you can buy in Europe for 2/3 the price.
    We are so glad that you are enjoying your time here and are humbled that you chose to bring up your lovely family in little old Ireland.

      That’s nothing to do with the quality of the postal service and it’s unfair to blame them for that (no I’m not a postman). So now I just confine my online purchases to EU nations and I discovered it’s actually ok.
      As far as contacting the people in An Post is concerned, well I think you’ll find in this country that in cases of emergency/hardship/genuine need, Irish people in all organisations will generally go out of their way to do the right thing and waive the rules when something is brought to their attention.

      Hi I’m Irish and would like to respond to this question if you don’t mind. I have two very good friends that are girls, amazingly beautiful both of them, and both black, but both Irish. They are both in their early 40s now, but I would guess that both of them are among the earliest of our generations of non-white people that are Irish true and true. You wouldn’t distinguish either of them from any other Irish person but for the colour of their skin. What I’m trying to say is that brown skinned Irish people over the age of 40 are amongst the earliest of non-white Irish people, so we have only started to become a diverse society in relatively recent decades. However, I and all our friends would regard them as entirely Irish. I’m sure that racism exists in Ireland - you will always find bizarrely narrow-minded people in every society - but in general I think that Irish people see beyond things like skin colour and don’t treat it as anything much more beyond different genetics. In fact, as Irish people we tend to have very white skin and very often you will find us to be quite envious of anyone who has a bit of colour to their skin 😂
