I saw Santana in Passau, Germany in 1978 or 1979. If I remember rightly, during Europa the rest of the band left the stage, went back to the hotel for a shower and a change of clothes, then went out for a meal. When they got back, Carlos was still holding that note.

this old man absolutely wore me out at the Fox theatre back in about early 80's....he did the concert, and then did countless encores each of which seemed to be about 30 min....I can't remember how many because my young (at that time) self finally went to the lobby and sat down for a breather........incredible.

Grew up listening to Santana. I loved their early stuff, but really loved "Open Invitation" with Alex Ligertwood on vocals. Carlos kicked ass on this live version. I'm so old I considered this as new Santana at the time, even tho I was around 17 or so! Lol.

What a beautiful soul! Saw em' 4 times and each time was great! Don't know a lick of Spanish, but I understand all of his Spanish language songs because of his ability to communicate emotionally. His Latin roots separated him from all the 60's and 70s greats by having a unique sound. Plus, I love the tone of his guitar. So very soothing even when he's killing it. Chod thanks for the post. That's the great Graham Lear on drums. I always thought he looks quite alot like Michael Shrieve (Santana's drummer from Woodstock). Santana's first 6 albums will always be a major landmark in my own musical tates. He touches upon spiritual emotions like no other. Great reaction bro, I was wondering when someone would do Europa at long last.

The live version from, Moonflower's my favourite...
I wrote that before checking out the video...THIS IS IT,
    THANKS❗
Just like the greatly underappreciated, Jeff Beck, their instrument's are truly their VOICE'S❗
As iconic and incredible as "Soul Sacrifice", is from Woodstock...Carlos tone in particular, evolved from his thinner, '60's Gibson SG, to his '70's Yamaha & later, PRS signature models. Rather than his earlier, rhythmic, bluesy, RnB feel, it became this heavier, sustained cry, via his pedals & Mesa Boogie amplification. But behind it all, it's in the hands & vision of a master, inspired from beyond.
If you haven't already, please treat yourself to, "Song of the Wind", from Caravanserai, featuring a incendiary guitar duo between Carlos & future Journey-man, Neal Schon. The 17 year old prodigy opted to join Santana, turning down Eric Clapton's invitation to join Derek & the Dominos, (former Domino, Bobby Whitlock, later denied his story).

Storm At Sunup and People Gotta Move, one of the most underrated drummers of all time! You should check out Love Of My Life on Gino's Gist Of The Gemini album,

Thank you for Santana, one of my favorite performers/bands. I was lucky enough ( and old enough) to have seen them perform live twice. The first time was around 1972 at an outdoor event, sitting out under the stars listening to them was magic. Then saw them again in a completely different setting in the late 80's - much mellower concert with middle aged crowd drinking wine and grooving to this music style. Long life Carlos, thank you for years of wonderful music.

Thanks for a great discussion on Santana and “Europa.” I saw them open for the Stones in 1981 and as headliners about 4 years ago. Terrific both times! Brother Carlos is deep. Europa is the name of one of Planet Jupiter’s moons. How he got interested in that I haven’t heard but the full name of the song is “Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile). This has been a popular song for contemporary jazz artists to cover, especially for saxophone. It translates very well from guitar to sax.

This is a great time era for his music. Well worth a long listen.. He did a double live album.....I think it was called Moonflower or something.....really good album.....and you should also check his album called Marathon with a named Chris Solberg playing the other guitar......you also need to check out his older album called Abraxas with the guitarist from Journey playing the other guitar....you need to check out the song Touissant Overture from the Abraxas album.....really great song.

CHOD, check out The Moonflower album, Zebop album plus there is a tremendous live album plus DVD called Lotus. It's live from Japan in 73 or 74. It wasn't released in America till about a decade later. Some one thank God down loaded the whole concert onto you tube. It is absolutely tremendous, it was more jazz fusion like mixed in with stuff from the first 3 albums . Carlos really let's loose on this one. The whole band actually is in the zone and just hitting the note if you know what I mean.. so everybody if you get a minute check out the lotus concert and buy the album it is better than Moonflower and they do great extended versions of tracks off the first 3 records!!!
