This was actually released waaay back in '81, I've been listening to this song for 40 years. I remember taping it off of my living room stereo onto a cassette! 😂 So much similar FANTASTIC music came out of that decade, good times - I miss them. 😢
They had a ton of hits. Originally with vocalist John Foxx then Midge Ure .. on this track. The Voice The Thin Wall Hymn Reap the wild wind Dancing with tears in my eyes Visions in Blue (a fave) They had sooo many great tracks and the singer still tours today
You said it...both "eras" of Ultravox are GREAT. Midge Ure definately got them more "hits" and recognition...but can you go wrong with John Foxx on "Hiroshima, Mon amore"? [sp] and "The wild , the beautiful and the damned" to name just two....
I’m an Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Saxon etc kinda guy and have been since the 80’s, but I have always loved this song. When it came out it was stunning and groundbreaking. The Eurythmics were similar, almost mixing New Romantic music with classical music. There’s should always be time for genuinely good music, no matter what genre
I love that you can now instantly identify 80s music! There are many giveaways - synth sounds you don't hear in any other decade and it becomes obvious if you hear enough of it. This would be arty techno/experimental type band - (like Kraftwek, New Order etc) The 80s version of prog rock? LOL. I miss your reactions and you've been away from your channel a month. Hope all is well!!
More thoughts I should have added to my original comment. That was SUCH a GREAT TIME for music, coming out of the 70's Disco era I gravitated to early 80's Alternative music. Starting in the 70's, future legends like The Talking Heads (David Byrne), Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry), The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen etc were closely followed in the 80's by super group Depeche Mode and SOooo many others. One niche artist was Shona Laing with standout tracks like "Soviet Snow" and one of my ALL TIME favorite songs "(Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy". Funny aside: her Wikipedia page highlights her rise internationally after being played on "WLIR" radio station. So true! It was a small station from Long Island, NY that I listened to ALL the time when I still lived in the Bronx. Couldn't believe I read that there on Wiki! 🙂. Yeah, those were the days!!!
:) the songwriters of this era all knew the works of The Beatles, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, The Kinks, Stones, Sabbeth, Motown, Ray Charles, Queen, Elton John and 101 more... And it was presented as a play - the music video shows the relationship dynamic of a couple, in rainy noir nighttime meeting.

Saw him in Leicester a couple of years ago..... still sounded awesome as ever and my voice had gone by the time they'd finished through singing 😊
And remember old Visage. Great days!

I love Ultravox, Midge Ure has a great voice. Their music still definitely holds up.
One of my favorite Ultravox songs, thank you for this.
this was from the early 80's, there was a musical genre called The New Romantics. This was a perfect example of the style

The fact that Joe Dolce kept this from number1 is the biggest travesty in UK music!!
The whole album is superb 👌
This is very creative and such a good example of early 80s music. Fantastic!
Their "Rage in Eden" album was really outstanding

I really enjoyed this song!! It had a lot of emotion you can feel throughout the entire song
One of my favorite songs. Takes me back
I think this is a good tune. I use it on my music playlist. It's a really good tune to use when breaking up the monotony in the music playlist.
You should listen to their live performance at Live Aid.....WHEW!
See the live version from 83 of All Stood Still by UVox for the breadth of the band and some fine guitar work.
One of my favourite bands. The first 3 albums with John Foxx have quirky lyrics; those with Midge Ure are more more melodic and sound synthesized.
Might not be one's cup of tea but it is a bona fide classic.
I'm not familiar with this band. But I do like discovering bands from this era. You might also like Yazoo known as Yaz in our part of the world.
