#hockey #nhl #newyorkislanders #coloradoavalanche #patrickroy Patrick Roy is officially returning to the NHL as the new coach of the New York Islanders.
Not sure about Roy as a mid-season replacement. Roy has always come off as a guy who wants things done his way, which is fine if the team had a bit of lead-in time like a regular preseason to get the system right. But, jumping in mid-season, if Roy changes too much around it may kill the team's chances if it takes them more than a few games to adapt to a new system. It'll be interesting, and I guess from where the Islanders currently sit it can't get a lot worse, so they may as well try something. But I think next season (if he sticks around) will probably be a better measuring stick. Will we see the Koho pads in practice?.
the good thing about that is that lane lamberts coaching style was non existent, not saying i disagree with you, but i think the fact that we'll have a coach that might show some emotion and get the boys going will be the biggest shake up for us.
The old adage "with age comes wisdom" is true for Patrick Roy who (hopefully) has learned from his past mistakes and will not repeat them. He has had success at every level as a coach and player. The Islanders have the talent to make the playoffs but they were misguided and desperately needed a coaching change. Hopefully the stars align and Lou's decision to hire Patrick Roy will prove to be a smart one!
I was a kid who followed his career when Roy started. I loved goal tending. His coaching in the NHL was... exciting at times to be honest. He was new to it at that level. I think he has what it takes and if anything, I may tune in to some NYI games to see how it goes. I always wanted to see him come back again to coach in the nhl, dude has a passion that makes things interesting.
@@frankrizzo8946 I only watched his coaching the Aves back in 2013-14 or so , don't really remember much except that he was unpredictable... definitely felt more offensive minded. He spoke now how he's changed after his first NHL coaching stint and being with the Ramparts. Should be interesting.
Roy is intense and if they are looking for a demanding and winning attitude. They got their men! Remains to be seen if his style 1:49 will appeal with players. True winners will embrace his style.
And was it Roy you wanted or just a new HC? Cause I was all about a new HC for about that same amount of time. So I ask if not Roy then who? I am sure there is no shortage of talent when it comes to HC’s.
I wonder if Roy becomes next in line for gm. Lou isn't getting any younger and part of the reason he left Colorado was he wanted more control of personnel
The question is, will Patty Roy be a Babcock or Torts type of guy. I for one hope he can appreciate the opportunity and do something with it. Don’t need him fighting other coaches or putting on the Koho’s, just instill that passion to be great. Now there are some real dogs on that roster so let’s see how well he can coach.
First off . His daughter is hot. LOL plus pulling the goalie with 10 minutes left is brilliant. The odds of coming back from a 3 or 4 deficit are almost zero while if they get lucky and score the odds go up exponentially. It is a brilliant math move.
Lets not forget that Roy pioneered the whole movement of pulling your goalie way before the last min of the game if you were trailing. He single handily proved you could pull your goalie and still have a great chance of tying ir even winning the game. Teams have been doing it ever since. Hell Florida pulled their goalie with almost five mins left against the Wild and the Wild weathered an absolute onslaught before Hartman seaked the deal. I just wonder what tricks he'll have up his skeeve this time.
As an Avs fan, I have mixed feelings but am leaning towards being positive that he hopefully learned his lesson to be patient, to accept his role as a coach and not an armchair GM, and to control his emotions. Best of luck, Patty Roy!
I remember just before the 2022 draft I was having a conversation with a friend who is an Isles fan and he was suggesting they should draft Brad Lambert because his uncle had just been named head coach. I pointed out that head coaches don't generally last too long in the NHL and Lane probably still wouldn't be the coach fo the Isles by the time Brad played in the NHL. After I read this news I texted him, "I told you so."
This reminds me of some 20+ years back when Jacques Lemaire signed as coach of the Devils. Like Roy, Lemaire was a prestigious hall-of-fame ex-Canadien and everyone wondered why he'd go to such an unprestigious franchise, as the Devils were then. Remember that was before they had ever won anything. Well, who is the common factor in Lemaire-to-the-Devils and Roy-to-the-Islanders? It's pretty obvious. The other interesting thing I've noticed over the years is Lou is Mr. USA Hockey but has had his best success with old school Canadian coaches, and each of his three cup winners was coached by an ex-Hab: Lemaire, Larry Robinson & Pat Burns.
Isles fan here.....I HATED LAMBERT and I like this move. Isles have a lot of talent for being a boring ass team (Barzal, Horvatt, Dobson, Nelson, Sorokin, Pelech, Pulock, Holmstrom....and decent core players Clutterbuck, Lee, Palmieri, Pageau, Engvall) They can and should use this spark to make the playoffs and get out of the 1st round
With they're successful dynasty past, huge fan base along with a brand new arena., they should have a more powerful team/ hands down.. Firing coach was i thought last thing needed to do, need a new GM and a big trade or aquisition like ASAP
The Islanders don't have trade capital available. One of the knocks on Lou that seems to be bearing truth is that he can be a nightmare for player development. The farm system is bare, and Lou's son does not seem to have been able to shape anyone in his system. The roster is on the older and slower side. Lou really didn't sell the fan base on Lane Lambert, and we are still scratching our heads as to why Trotz was let go. Some people claim that it was Trotz himself who requested the out. Either way, Lane has not shown that he can take the franchise as it currently is and move it beyond what it already has achieved in the past two years. So we're not getting a major acquisition (no cap space either), and unless ownership decides to part ways with Lou, changing the coach was the likely move. Given the two slides the team has had this season, and the inability to lock-down a lead, something needed to change.
Yes i was upset about Trotz myself, no trade capital i know- but then it hit me weeks ago.. Give up Varlamov and a few players for a scorer type??? Hmmmmm/// They gettin outshot every period for awhile now- That needs to b addressed @@dawntraveler42
Roy left Colorado because he wanted more d men, Sakic and the rest of the front office disagreed and wanted more goal scorers.... which they didn't really need. Roy left and suddenly the Avs started picking up more d men....
I don’t get it either, there’s always gonna be mediocre teams (this is what the islanders are) and teams that don’t make it. I don’t think it’s the coach for this one at all.
I’m an isles fan and lane needed to go. He just felt like a big nothing burger. He never felt like he was doing much to help them win and he couldn’t calm this team down when they go super cold. Not to mention all the stupid line mix ups he did last year including third period of game 6 against Carolina which was just an atrocious period. This needed to happen. Just felt like Lane wasn’t really doing shit to help this team win. As for his replacement? Let’s see what happens.

Roy is one hell of a competitor but he is loyal only to numero uno. Good luck Islanders.
Avs fans warning them? Roy and ownership disagreed on how to win hockey games. That’s why he is gone and why the team went downhill during year 2 and 3. There was a head coach that year after year had his ability to make decisions stripped away.
If you're a coach, you have to find a system that works with the pieces you have, demanding the front office gives you better pieces is not how things work. Even Roy has said "If you're the coach, you coach. If you're GM, that's what you do." If he's learned to work with the GMs as opposed to fighting them, the Isles might have a great thing coming, but otherwise it might be the same thing we saw in Colorado.
