This is great! It's really hard finding videos from basses that are giving tips and have been doing this for a long time. I would like to hear more about the sub octave range though. And this is why I'm having trouble finding info haha.... I can sing down to somewhere in the -5th octave (roughly an A-5 but honestly I can't tell for certain because I don't have any pitch recognition devices or studio mics that can pick up that low of a frequency.) I've been blessed with the ability to have a ridiculous range, and I'm extremely thankful for that. I not only work on growing my range all the time, but I put strong emphasis in tone quality, accuracy, and everything else that goes with letting your music live through your voice.
I'm looking if anybody has much knowledge on the really low end, like about how to get more resonance for example. I REALLY think I can break Tim Storms record for largest range in the next year or so. His record for lowest note might elude me though... I mean, 1 vocal flap vibration every 6 seconds is just plain nuts!
I believe my diet may help contribute to my vocal muscles being so flexible (maybe, maybe not?) Anyways, if anyone is wondering, I eat extremely healthy, 99.9% of liquid that I drink is water, and I am just about 19 years old.

One tip omitted: Be very cautious about singing high notes too often. If you really are a bass, steer clear of baritone music. As impressive as Ezio Pinza was in his later years, he would have done even better had he shunned baritone parts like Don Giovanni, Escamillo, the High Priest in "Samson and Delilah", Boris Godunov, and King Dodon. George Beverly Shea, who unlike Pinza did not have a first-line vocal equipment, was extremely cautious about singing high. He seldom sang even to middle C and never above C# or D in my hearing. He also sounded quite respectable at age 102.
Maybe I'll do another video soon of tips submitted in the comments of this video.
Have not sang a note in a quartet since 1993. I miss singing so much. I am a retired Policemen and want to sing and have been looking for God to lead me but I have no idea how to get in the business. I have asked many people to talk to me like Mark Lowry and others but so far nothing. My favorite bass singer was George Younce who I met at two different shows. He was a blessing and had a true gift from God. Again, would love to sing and wish I could talk to someone in the business. It is not about money or glory. I just want to sing again for God. It has been a 25 year journey back to this calling but I do feel it.
Marc: My suggestion would be to create a good demo and then go to every concert in your area and start networking. Also, follow Singing News on FB and online. They are always releasing news about members leaving groups and if that group is auditioning for the open position. Best of luck.
Sadly I drifted, well back slid and I don't think God will ever use me again. I will just keep singing in my truck and shop. There is a penalty for sin and I guess this is mine. To want to sing and serve and not be able to. Thanks for responding.
+Marc Eaton Where are you located? I f you are near St. Louis, Dallas, LA, etc., find a barbershop chorus. Seriously. The more competitive, the better. You want good basses, contacts, etc? Find a chapter! The Barbershop Harmony Society is based in Nashville, which has an AWESOME (like top five in the world) chorus. LOTS of cross over from barbershop to gospel.

I was a Baritone before, until I realised that I couldn't reach my high notes cause I wasn't singing correctly so I moved to bass to develop my voice. Then I sort of learn how important the bass was in the choral and because of the lack of basses and the large amounts of Baritones (cause guys like showing off the high voice) I decided to stick with bass which eventually grew on me. It's my favourite position to sing as.

Have noticed that many of the people you have talked to over the years are very soft spoken also. I noticed that when I am NOT trying to make volume with my voice that it is much more easy to control tones and relax. Let the PA system do the work.

I'm 18 and my chest range is C2-D4 and on good days I can hit a B1 and my falsetto goes up to F5

Finally a really believable range. I am 18 as well and my range is quite similar (C2-F4). My falsetto goes also up to F5. Finally a guy who is not 3 years old and having a 12 octave range. :)

the best tip is the one's about bringing your voice up and use the nose resonance. im a tenor and i find it easier to reach the bass notes using that technique. im versatile now ever since im using that very technique

Thanks, for posting this video, there are a lot of great tips in this video.
I didn't realize that dropping my chin would cut the sound off, which i have caught myself doing from time to time.
I think another good tip for developing a good Bass voice, is to join a Choir, where there are multiple ranges within the Bass register that we would sing. I actually switched from Tenor to Bass, and I noticed that since then, my voice has gotten deeper.
That shot with Mark and his ice cream is hilarious!
you cant switch bass from tenor pls make some sense but i agree about dropping chin thing it helped :/
+The Blitz Nothing complicated about it, I was a Tenor, and was asked by the Choir Director to start helping our Bass out, eventually I became the sole Bass for the Choir.

Funny enough, Tim Riley himself told me he was taught be Leroy and even though I'm not a bass (or even a singer for that matter, lol), it's an interest of mine, and he said he hates two things: first, when people lower their chins like Ray said not to do here, and second, vocal fry. At first he didn't know what I meant by "vocal fry", but when I showed him, I'll never forget his response: "Oh no! I can't stand that!" Hahaha!
I'm not surprised at all that Tim didn't know what you meant at first. What we call vocal fry has been around forever and under a lot of other names.

Lol I met him after a concert they did in 2011. First time they came to California in 10 years!
If you talk to him often, ask him how low he could sing at 15 or 16. I'd really appreciate it. I'm just curious because I'm 15 and I can sing an A1 sometimes down to a G1. I'm like him. I hate voval fry and refuse to use it. Lowest note i've ever sang was an E1 in the morning. Tim's by far my favorite bass singer but I like Tim Duncan quite a bit to.

That concert was literally the only time I've ever met him. He did tell me that at 14 he was able to get to C2, but I'm not sure about 15 or 16. You might want to check Gold City's website to see if you could e-mail him. I've e-mailed Daniel Riley at least once and gotten a response. As you may be well aware, Tim had a stroke this year and he's in the process of recovering, so I'm not sure how quickly you might get a response if you tried to e-mail him.
I had and embarrassing moment there is this 4 beat lower do to a higher do lol it was back then but lol I can't forget that moment

Will strengthening my neck muscles give me a deep voice? Do bass singers strengthen their neck muscles?
No, you don't sing with your neck muscles as they're simply too small and fragile to withstand vocal fold phonation. Chest and torso muscles are far stronger and are what should be used when singing both high and low notes.
Neck exercises are more for releasing the tension in your neck.

My lowest note is the C# below the bass clef. I have hit the low C several times, but if I could do it consistently I'd be able to sing so many more songs, since so much of our music is in the key of C
Keep singing and working on that low end. It will get better as you work it consistently.

+Point One your voice should continue to mature as you get older. That usually results in your voice getting lower.

+A Hybrid Gamer Wow, to think it's been all but a year, and in this year I've done more choral and vocal training than ever. My lowest note stayed the same, a B1 throughout the day and an A1 in the morning, but my upper chest range and falsetto I raised by close to half an octave. I look forward to seeing how my voice will shape itself in the future, thank you! :)
Pastel Prince It's called puberty, and there's not really a way to predict what your voice will develop into. But if you can hit a Bb1, you might just be a base

Wait, I'm 13 and can sing down to E1, so what happens when I get older? Does it just go super bass or does it plateau?
+A Turn In The Game Of... Well the thing is you probably arent really hitting an E1 you're hitting an E2. Which is still fine.
+Hunter Lewis Well in my full voice I can't hit four Es, my highest note in full voice is F4. So therefore, the four Es I can't hit are E4, E3, E2 and E1. Plus, I can hear a difference between E1 and E2.
probably a fry or subharmonic i can hit a G0 like that
At around 3:45, how do I bring the notes out? Because I feel abut of pain when going low but I can also feel air in there also but the notes still seem to come out
If you're feeling pain, odds are something isn't correct.
I'm starting to get the hang of it. Don't feel pain that much and I'm doing the same notes. When I try to go even lower, then I feel some type of pain... Not much but its there. Any tips?
Do you have any tips on how to maintain your vocal range throughout the day? In the morning I can usually hit a strong C2 and weak Bb1, but by the time I've been up for several hours and have talked a lot that usually goes up by 3 semitones, sometimes more. Also how much does your voice usually deepen with age? I'm 16 now.
Most singers will tell you to watch how much you talk throughout the day to help keep your voice as fresh as possible.
+David Cox A teaspoon of honey will help a lot.
+Matthew Fouch and how can I do that without breaking the third tip? The only way for me to maintain a deep voice throughout the day is by concentrating on keeping the larynx as deep as possible all the time.
im in seventh grade and i can almost hit an e flat...the one below the bass clef...do you have any tips on increasing my range?
Hey Garrett... Keep singing and doing exercises that work your low end and your voice will continue to get lower as it matures.

I'm moving towards freshmen year and the lowest note I can sing in chest voice is a d2. What note do you think i will be able to sing by the time I reach maybe 17 with practice? (i am turning 14 two weeks from now)
You wont know till it comes. Ive seen bass 2 turn into tenors and tenors thurn into bass 2, focus on basic techniques like breathing and posture so either way youll benefit
