    On the violin "controlled squeakiness", generally it's a form of distortion and emphasis of harmonics that comes from technique. Tim uses two different techniques here, one is traditional, of playing right near, almost on the bridge (sul pont) with a lot of force, which mainly gives distorsion due to the very limited range of motion of the string, and the way it allows the scratchy bow sound to actually play through instead of being lost in the string. The other is something I've only heard in NeO pieces and Leprous/Ihsahn's Contaminate Me, which is lessening pressure with your fingers and bow, and allowing the instrument to warble between the note you should be playing, and a few harmonics. I have never found written reference to this

    NeO is my favorite modern band by far. You did everything justice here and it's great to watch. They are absolutely incredible live.
    Also, your reactions to the music are my exact ones since I first heard them. Just absolutely floored by the talent and composition. Absolute master class in songwriting.

    I don't know the name for the violin squeaking , but it's done by playing closer to the "bridge" with the bow. That way it sounds really metallic and squeky :) I myself started to play violin beecause Tim. And I've wanted to learn the same techniques he uses. So far not so good, but I'll get there!

    I love NeO! They're definitely one of my favorite bands. Well, they haven't released anything in quite a while and I"m not really someone who checks live footage so maybe he improved nowadays - but comparing Xen's vocals in the earlier releases and the latter ones, I feel like there's a noticeable change in his tone (he sounds much hoarser and more "tired" on Urn compared to the demo or the first album), plus I've heard he lost his voice live at least once so maybe his approach isn't very safe or he isn't particularly very careful with his voice on live settings? Tim on the other hand doesn't have that much of a range (G2-D5) but his voice compliments Xen's so well and the contrast between Tim's and Xen's works so well!

    • @KardavoxAcademy
      @KardavoxAcademy  5 років тому

      I love them too! Its possible he lost his voice for reasons unrelated to his technique, but I haven't heard much about it so hard to say. You can definitely do these types of screams safely. Hopefully he's in good vocal health! And yeah I agree Tim's singing is a great contrast. G2-D5 is about where I am. Well, D5 requires me to really warm up and get my voice going before I'll go for it

    The violinist is doing that by bowing close to the bridge. It’s called ‘sul ponticello’ - there are other variations on the name but that’s the one usually encountered most often in classical scores, usually shortened to sul pont. - the opposite of that, sul tasto, is where you play more over the neck, getting a more flutey/hollow sound. It’s the same playing on guitar close to the bridge vs. neck (but not usually referred to as sul pont/etc to my knowledge) or... even choosing which pickup(s) to use in a given section of music. Not a competent string player in the slightest, but I studied composition with a cellist.

    Dude, I love those vids of yours. I've seen some "vocal sth reacts" videos, but no one tries to comment that much on a technicals, neither can that person vocalize in the pretty same fashion as the vocalist from the song does. You do that and it's just

    The Bunny the Bear, they are SO unique and matt(unclean) is a super talented vocalist and I havent heard anyone like him.
    Also their old clean vocalist has some of the cleanest HIGHEST vocals ever. Such a contrast such wow.

    Yo, I love these videos and I think Shrine of Malice would be very interesting to do. The vocalist is an absolute BEAST, sounds like a thunderous evil god raining down upon you and like a debased demon from the bowels of hell with his highs and he has some soothing cleans as well! Utter madlad. So I'm sure there's lots of fun stuff to talk about.

    The violin technique doesn't have a name that I'm aware of, HOWEVER It's bow placement, how fast and heavy you play. So to get that squeaky thin sounding you play faster bow strokes near the bridge. Very hard to get sound good but it's very cool when you do. I play violin so that's how I know lol.

    You should do "to the grave" (don't know the name of the singer).. He does some pretty insane stuff.. Or rok rupnik of within Destruction should be interesting as well.. And I think Rheese Peters (ex A Night in Texas) is a good example as well

    I'd love to see an analysis on a japanese band, more so either DEVILOOF or Nocturnal bloodlust. They have so much range in their vocals, both cleans and screams, as well as some really strange sounds. What I most want to see is your thoughts and breakdown on are the really high pitched kind of whistle sounds they do, its insane.
    The two songs I'd love to see are:
    Nocturnal Bloodlust - Pleasure of Torture ( Find that the live version from the video '銃創 AT '15 AKASAKA BLITZ (Disc 2)' is the best, starts at 17:58)
    DEVILOOF - ESCAPE

    Glad I found this channel. Been doing unclean vocal styles for over a decade off and on. My last band was “mirror my lies” with our best song being malleus est Mortis. I have been trying to get my vocals back recently and some of your videos have helped me remember what I was doing. The issue I have carried my whole career though is control. I tend to use everything I have when I scream and don’t know how to pull back. I love making music but I tend to leave vocal sessions with massive headaches. I mostly do yells similar to bands like architects but I also do lows and rarely some highs. What would be your advice for a vocalist trying to get back to where he was? My yells I still got but my screams tend to take a lot out of me now when they used to be easy. Should I just do a little bit every day until I get used to it again? Sorry for this long comment. Keep up the good work.
