Before I saw them live, I used to have trouble picking what was most impressive about these guys: their proficiency at their instruments or their compositional skills?
After seeing them live, I would have to answer that it is the fact they can do all of their songs live flawlessly. It's one thing to hear this from an album. To be there 10' from the stage when they're playing this stuff live, you have to remember to pick your jaw up off the floor when you go home.

    • @mnewm21

yeah it is funny some people doing reactions go oh how disappointing the crowd isn't into it as they aren't headbanging or jumping etc...the reason the crowd isn't doing any of that is because they are so into it they forget where they are until the trance is broken then they headbang a bit until the trance effect kicks back in. It is so proggy (shh dont say that too loud) and you can't help but watch them playing the music in awe sometimes when seeing it live.

@@mnewm21 Exactly that. I've only seen them the once, and it's the best live music experience I've ever had, and I don't think anyone in that room moved from the spot they were in when the band hit the stage. Sometimes all you need is for the music, and the amazing atmosphere they create with it, to wash over you. It took me hours after the show just to process what I'd seen, they're absolute masters.

Glad you did this one, I know you're not focused on the lyrics but this + devour me (defo react to that too...) are very profound to me beyond the music too. Yeah neo=forget not. The opening acoustic guitar piece was written individually for the player's dad's funeral, and this song spawned from that. Poetic that forget has roots in 'oblivion'. Forget not those gone

Devour me, Colossus next! Also Drummer Dan Presland has a YT channel with play through videos of their songs and other projects he's involved in. Its definitely fun to see him play and see his skills in action. Majority of Metal heads don't care much about the lyrics. When it comes to metal it is the music itself that dominates. When writing a new song majority of the time it is the music that is constructed first and then the lyrics are catered to its structure. Hence why a song can be in a foreign language but it doesn't matter as long as the music itself makes you feel a certain way. It really peeves me when I hear someone complain that they can't hear the words or that the lyrics weren't good. It makes realize they aren't really listening to the music. They don't realize that the music itself is communicating a lot. If you were to take out all the soundtrack music/background music in any movie I guarantee it will be a very disappointing experience and the scenes won't be as impactful or make you feel as you did when there was music.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  4 роки тому +23

I have never understood that idea -- about metalheads not caring for the lyrics. To me, every aspect of a song holds importance. Bands include vocalists and they choose to use words with their singing for a reason, I find it rude to be so nonchalant about it. That would be like saying the clarinets aren't that important in a symphonic band because they can be removed or ignored and the emotion of the song doesn't change. I mean, that might be true but the song has changed and is no longer the intended experience. Not to mention that many lyrics tie in closely to the emotions and stories of the music and help to elevate the track.
As far as I see it both camps -- the "lyrics don't matter much" and the "words are more important than music" groups -- are equally disrespectful to the art and artists.

@@CriticalReactions What Im saying is if the lyrics are great and so is the music then they hit the jackpot. If the lyrics aren't that great than we're willing to overlook that because the music is so great. I love Dani Filths(Cradle of filth) lyrics because he is a lyrical genius and he might as well write literature, he's that good. His lyrics read like poetry and therefore i've memorized many a lyrics by him. In comparison to say cannibal corpse, well we can overlook those lyrics lol unless one likes the horror stuff. However, Xen(Ne Obliviscaris) does write beautiful lyrics. So this band nails everything. I agree the entirety as a whole matters but certain things are forgivable if it lacks.

Another vote for Devour Me, Colossus Pt I - Blackholes (& Pt II - Contortions if you also want to include the classical 2.5 minute "outro").
Triptych Lux is also amazing (that's Pt II of Painters of the Tempest which contains movements II->IV for the main part of the song, all five movements total about 22 minutes of awesomeness).
Another song that might be of interest to you (probably not on your list) is Majesty and Silence by Omnium Gatherum - A Finnish Melodic Death Metal band. I can't stop listening to it.
Edit: Just wanted to add to and reinforce the comments claiming the band performs like a studio recording live - they really do, I've been lucky enough to have seen them 3 times. My only qualm with their live performances are the acoustics of the venues I've seen them in don't really allow the audience to really be able to hear everything, but that's really just part of seeing live music I suppose. Need to get me some of those earplugs that cut out a lot of the noise that I keep hearing about xD

Been lurking for quite a few weeks here. Great reactions, many people I give up half way through their talking but you managed to keep me listening the entire 29 minutes today. Well done.
While I'm not musically trained, I discovered heavy metal while at University and "lucking out" on living with a flatmate who was aspiring to be a guitarist in a heavy metal band.
I remember walking into town one day and him looking in shock at me "Dude, you don't whistle Cradle ..."
My music tastes have become extremely broad though, from 50s, to more conventional metal, to Soen, "NeO", Sigur Ros.
I am hitting 40 this year and still doing what I can to keep trying to listen to more. Happy to offer some suggestions at some point.
Have to admit, I still have not managed to get an ear for true death metal yet though!
Maybe I'm biased, but the instrumental parts for me are the best parts! I could listen to 14 minutes of that.

    • @CriticalReactions

I just getting into my 30s and I realized that I hadn't really heard any "new" music in long while. I get the odd recommendation from UA-cam but I couldn't really remember the last time that I discovered a new band. That's actually part of why I started this channel and why I (try to) consistently react to the lesser known bands. My musical tastes stagnated a bit over the last half decade and I'm more than ready to go exploring again.
And with that in mind I really couldn't ask for better viewers/subscribers. I've been introduced to some really amazing stuff this year and it's all thanks to you guys!
As for death metal, I'm right there with ya. Jinjer is the hardest stuff that I can really get into right now but I think that is because they reign it in and ease of the pedal occasionally. There is an ebb and flow to their stuff. "Pure" death metal is something I'm not really up for yet. I'll listen and appreciate it but I'm not going out and buying albums. At least not yet. :)

    - maudlin of the Well - "Birth Pains Of Astral Projection" - multi-section avant-garde/prog metal epic
    - Kayo Dot - "The Manifold Curiosity" or "Aura On An Asylum Wall" - avant-garde/post-metal/experimental rock pieces with distinct phases and increasingly intense structures
    - Between The Buried And Me - "White Walls" - prog metal album closer from the same album as "Ants Of The Sky"
    - Gorguts - "Obscura" - obscenely technical death/avant-garde metal
    -̶ ̶M̶e̶s̶h̶u̶g̶g̶a̶h̶ ̶-̶ ̶"̶C̶l̶o̶c̶k̶w̶o̶r̶k̶s̶"̶ DONE!

I've gotta hear your opinion on Painters of the Tempest man. Even if it's only part 2 and not the whole 3 parts. You've dipped your toes in the pool with Plague Flowers and Forget Not. Now jump in

If you do Painters you have to include part 3, the beautiful instrumental with a almost 1800's / Arabian feel. And part 1 really helps set the mood. Everything these guys do is just too good.

Hey man I was watching a few of your other videos I love your take on metal and its cool to see you pick up on things that I haven't even after years of listening to some of the bands you have covered. I heard you mention that you like really good melodies and metal bands that are able to have some fun without breaking the tone of the song or genre.
I think you would really enjoy "Blind Guardian" They have a very melodic guitar player and uses a lot of wah pedal and whammy bar lot's of vocal layering and tracks, that gives them a pretty unique sound and feel.
I would recommend checking out the song "And Then There was Silence" here is a link to the remastered version of it. ua-cam.com/video/HcRIGCmCoZA/v-deo.html
I know you say you prefer to listen to the studio version, but if you were to watch any live videos this band would be one to watch. Easily my favorite band to see live.
Also glad to see you watching Ne Obliviscaris again, one of my favorites
Keep up the good work man! can really see your love and passion for music in your videos and its great to see! :)

I have over 200 bands in my "need to react list" and lately have mostly been adding to the "number of request" number next to each band already on the list. I didn't think it was possible but somehow you've requested a band that wasn't on the list yet :)

    • @spencermartin9278
      @spencermartin9278 4 роки тому +1

      @@CriticalReactions Well maybe it's a sign then ;)
I figured you would be swamped with recommendations but figured why not throw one your way that I haven't really seen on any reaction channel but deserve a bit of recognition. They are a bit older of a band, and power metal, which isn't normally what is requested to you it seems.
Whatever you choose for the next one I'll be there regardless.

It eventually clicks, and when it does, it's a 11/10 type of song.
