Ah, well I have a suggestion. When you sand down the surface, keep the sanding dust. Then when you're ready to fill, mix it with your glue. Be conservative but make it like a wood puddy. Now you have a perfect match for both the absorptive quality and color. Put the mix in the canyon and leave it a little proud. Let it dry then sand. It should take stain pretty well after this. Try it and let me know how it went.

Thanks for a great suggestion! Thank you for sharing how to turn sanding dust into wood putty. I think mother would benefit knowing this as well. Great comment!

Beth if you wet your fingers after pressing the epoxy into the voids you can smooth it out so the sanding will be a lot easier and not as much. Here is a method I sort of use, I mix my pigments on a piece of glass laid on top of the piece I am going to grain and match the colors that way. Don't be afraid to use your fingers with this method it uses just denatured alcohol

Oh, man - you're brave and very patient! I'll only tackle damaged veneer when I get a piece so cheap (or free) that makes it not the end of the world if it doesn't work out - that, or if I really love it (typically because I personally want to keep it.) I've had some success matching damage / repairs by mixing stains. But, yeah, putty, wood filler and some grains just don't wanna cooperate, eh? I like pieces that I can complete in several days, cause getting bogged down on one project can be really frustrating. You're a good teacher!

Thankfully I found this dresser for free because you are correct I wouldn’t experiment as much with a piece of furniture I paid for. Mixing stains and trying to repair veneer definitely takes some patience but if you start to understand the methods it can be quite rewarding. I love your videos! Yours is the only one that I've found that actually teaches, and you get to make the mistakes before I do! LOL I'm working on a 200 year old flame mahogany bedside table that's been in the family as long as I can remember. The drawers are okay with only a little veneer missing. But the top has several bubbles and a couple of bad splits. I've ironed out some of the bubbles and it actually worked somewhat. To fill the cracks, I have some kwikwood, and checked out the Mohawk blending power. It's VERY expensive. Do you have anymore suggestions for the blending powder or just blending? If all else fails, I'll paint the top and sides and legs and leave the drawers in the flame mahogany. Thanks so much for all you're doing to learn and help!

Thanks for letting us learn from you! Would you use quick wood to fill in holes left by hardware that has been taken off? Or do you recommend something else? Thanks!

    • @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
      @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074  11 місяців тому

I like to fill hardware holes with dowels fit to size and then add Kwikwood or wood putty if need be. I find if you only use KwikWood or any other type of wood putty it could shrink as it dries and make the holes still look apparent on the drawers.

  • @donulwelling5885

Ufff. Try and fix bubbling BEFORE sanding. You run the risk of burning through the veneer otherwise. Burned veneer will never take stain. There is no way to fix burned veneer naturally.

I had that coating on my last pair of glasses. I didn't like it. Didn't do it on the current pair.
I love your video about the bubbles. I have a kitchen table that came to me in a similar condition. I've been afraid to do anything to it. I've never tried anything like that before. Normally I would just replace the piece of furniture but this table is such a one of a kind piece that I just can't replace it. I've been using Mop n Glow for wood floors on it now for several years just trying to keep it from getting any worse. I'll have to watch more of your videos on veneer before I'm brave enough to attempt a repair since this is a piece I use every day.@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074

A few things I have found useful in my furniture repair business.
When working with veneers, lay a damp rag over your trouble spots and an iron on the cotton setting. The heat and moisture can soften the wood and reduce or eliminate the bubbling. It may reactivate the glue as well. This technique can also be used to "pull dents" in wood. Results will vary depending on size and depth.
Starbond makes amazing colored CA glue (super glue) that is very useful when needing to work in small cracks on the veneer. Their micro tips will fit right in and allow you to glue and even fill small holes.
When using wood glue or CA, lay a piece of melamine over the top of your glue spots. It protects your workpiece and the glue wont stick. This would allow you to use your bricks and not mar the surface.
I have not used the JB weld version of the epoxy putty. I use Quikwood.
    www.amazon.com/Quick-Wood-471050-24-QuikWood-Putty/dp/B000VPO0R8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?adgrpid=54477640005&hvadid=580769657913&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9029965&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=824852299302240222&hvtargid=kwd-296186372639&hydadcr=14630_13386758&keywords=quikwood+epoxy+putty&qid=1689956239&sr=8-3
It comes in different colors if you want. I will just add a color that matches or is close to my desired color during the epoxy mixing process. That way the epoxy is colored and you are not working to disguise a white spot.
Another option for color mixing and matching is using water based stains. I use SamaN, also found on Amazon.
    www.amazon.com/SamaN-Interior-Water-Antique-Walnut/dp/B0067NHKNE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1I43XROJILN06&keywords=saman&qid=1689956697&sprefix=saman%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-1
They have a wide variety of colors that you can mix to make whatever shade you need. The great thing is that they are water based and you can wipe them off before they dry if needed. This gives you a great deal of flexibility. I will apply the color with a brush and can easily move or blend the color with my fingers on my workpiece. It all washes off when you are finished.
I have a small piece of beveled glass, 6"x 6", I had a local glass company make. This allows you to place the glass on your workpiece and mix your colors. Having your desired color right below makes the color creation process much easier.
Hopes this helps in your journey. Thanks for the video.
