I most appreciate that you are thinking of us rookies, out here. Some creators do keep us in mind, from time to time. I’m in the middle of my first piece and, of course it’s taking me longer than I want it to. I really do want to learn these types of things and how to identify different types of wood. Thank you for helping 💕
I can always tell laminate (you just can’t fake real wood), but it’s sometimes difficult to tell veneer vs solid wood, so that part was VERY helpful. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing this information! I’m relatively new at refinishing furniture and have had the hardest time picking out whether something is veneer or laminate. This was so helpful!
Thank you for this detailed explanation!! I’m a total beginner and have delayed trying projects because I didn’t know the difference and didn’t want to ruin a piece. Based on your explanation, I think the dresser I’ve had since childhood has veneer. I wanted to paint the trim black and sand down and stain the top and drawer faces. Wish I could attach a photo and have you weigh in!
Excellent info! I like that you discussed the confusion some have between veneer and laminate. And also the solid wood "myth". I smile every time I read an ad that says solid wood, VERY HEAVY! haha Folks, "very heavy" is a good clue that the piece may have a particle board substrate. I have found a lot of my solid wood furniture is actually lighter than pieces with man made substrates. Great video!
I am taking a fairly unique approach, I suppose, as I actually make smaller pieces of furniture from scratch. Being that these are smaller items (like end tables), I usually opt for solid hardwoods all around, with just some Baltic birch 7 ply plywood in places where appropriate. Otherwise, I love to use solid woods such as cherry, walnut, curly maple, granadillo, poplar, and even Bolivian rosewood when I can find it (which is not often). So yep, the cost is very high. And working part time, I only turn out a half dozen or so pieces a year. But each one is unique, and very well constructed. And I just love doing it! There is nothing so nice as high quality furniture!!
Thank you for taking the time to give us a video on these distinctions, it definitely is difficult to tell right away. Love the way you really explain things in all your videos.!
I clicked on this video as I came across a surprise when trying my hand at redoing a bathroom cabinet. I sanded down the paint to reveal pressed wood and honestly had no idea what it was or if I could do anything about the raised areas that had water damage. Within 2 minutes you answered all my questions and turns out I'm doing the right think by just painting over it after sanding it flat 😁 so glad I found your videos, your easy to follow steps and your reasoning for how and why you fix things in certain ways gave me the confidence to attempt this fix myself in the first place! 😁
Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video! Very helpful as I start working on a project with my great grandma’s dresser set that was long ago painted. Can’t wait to see what’s under there.
That really helps a whole lot! 90% of the stuff in my area on market place is advertised as solid wood. When I go look at the piece, it's an obvious laminate, and I walk away from it. I'm not equipped to deal with that type yet. Gotta know when to hold em, and when to fold em!
Thank you,.. just starting out trying to figure out what is what,..going to refinish the top of a dresser and trying to learn the process,..great video!
Super helpful thank you. Enjoy all your videos, your music, your little laugh, your nice voice. Not to mention I've learned and lot and gotten lots of inspiration.
Glad it was helpful! Oddly enough, I’m going to be doing an updated (and much more in depth) version very soon. This one you just watched was kind of a quick start guide, so to speak. Plus my editing has come a long way since then lol
thank you for this very informative video. I have been confused by these terms and also appreciate that even 'solid wood' is often not truly what I think of when I hear that term. I always learn something from you and so appreciate your time and expertise. I return to your videos time and again and mine them for details that i missed the first time (or 2!) through. You are a gem.
Angie, again thank you for your great video's. Please include that sometimes "Laminate" can refer to Gluing pieces of Solid wood together for a larger "Piece" of Solid wood. I find it most often on Tables or Countertops. In fact, I've even used 2x8's to create a "Solid wood" counter top. it's easy but extremely heavy, so the quality of the cabinets is important. All of these pieces are wonderful, thank you for saving them from the landfill! Please keep up the art, stay well, stay safe. Blessings to you. ♥♥♥!
Yes, it is. But we are talking about lamin-IT (rough phonetics with a Canadian twang, lol) vs lamin-ATE. The latter is a verb, the former is a noun, product. So it depends on the context completely; it’s not able to literally be swapped.
Thank you for this thorough explanation! I am a beginner flipper and this video was very helpful! I love your content and transformations! I’m looking forward to seeing your channel grow!
I’ve always been afraid of picking something and finding out it’s low end crap! This is very helpful. I’ll have to pin this next time I go out looking for something to do. Thanks for the lesson Angie.
I found this extremely helpful. I am picking up a piece tomorrow and have no clue what type of wood or finish it has. I now know what to look for.. Thank you.. Much love from England 🇬🇧❤
I like your work, the attention to detail is refreshing. It comes across that you really care about what and how your renovation work turns out. I like that, so I've subscribed to your channel. I look forward to seeing how your channel develops. Best of luck with it. Warmest wishes to you.
Not new info for me particularly but really well explained. As a newbie to flipping I wish I had this video in the beginning. Keep up the great work I love your videos.
Thank you so much for the lesson! I have always wondered and thought that hard wood was superior and I wouldn't be able to refinish anything that wasn't. You are awesome.
Thank you so much for the information! Just getting into flipping furniture, specifically dressers so this is very very helpful. I admit I did not know veneer was wood, and thought it was similar to laminate. I could tell the difference between real wood and veneer or laminate, but not veneer and laminate. So thank you!!
I really appreciate how, in all your videos, you teach. You tell us what you are using and why not only in regards to tools or supplies but finishes too. Why are there so many top coats? We’ll, Angie will tell you why she chose what she did for a project. I feel immersed in a online class when I binge watch your videos.
I'm starting to get into woodworking/cabinetry. I wasn't really thinking about things being made out of plastic laminates, or veneers. That is until I wanted to paint the bathroom vanity, and learned that paint does not get along with cheap laminate! Lol Thanks for the info.
I picked up this dresser you would LOVE! IT WAS FREE, MCM. Ive tried googling it and I cant find anything like it. It's absolutely gorgeous and people keep telling me I can't sand it but it's veneer and I know I can. I wish I could send you a picture 😅 it's beautiful. Found replacements for the same exact pulls on eBay because it's missing one.
Thank you for sharing this I know I needed to have a better understanding I have been refurnishing some of the furniture in my house and this is how to me to see what or how to best fix the problem love you show can't wait for the next show thank you for teaching us new beginners what we need to know have a great day and God bless you
am new to your channel and am captivated by the skill and attention shown. you also provide valuable info for the true beginners. added to your warm yet determined attitude these make for great viewing.thank-you
Thank you! This is very helpful. I do know the difference between veneer and laminate just because you can see it! Veneer looks like wood; veneer looks like plastic. Maybe the older veneer you spoke of looks more like real wood though? Also, I think older pressed wood is better than the newer stuff. It seems to be much denser. But I think I recently bought a cabinet that is actually solid wood, and OH MY LORD! It is sooo heavy!!! So I am just fine with veneer.
🤭 Oops. The laminate stuff. I guess it lacks the depth of veneer? I feel like even in online photos, I can see the difference. Sometimes even on painted veneer/wood you can see a difference.
So very grateful for your knowledge, expertise and for sharing. Very helpful. Definitely changing my perspective on how to turn something hideous to amazing beauty.
Love the video....been looking for someone to explain this...and trying to figure out what the Walmart storage cubes are and how to makeover them??? Could you tell me or make a side video????
I can’t remember which videos I’ve heard you say this on, but I understand why you say don’t use pledge on Wood furniture. what do you recommend for removing dust and dirt on wood furniture, of course including veneer 😊
For cleaning- most people are overkill. I usually recommend a soft, lint free, slightly damp cloth. For things that need a bit more, a slight bit of a mild dish soap, wiped clean afterwards with the slightly damp cloth. Things like pledge are terrible for finishes, because of what they contain. And some commercial cleaners will eat through certain finishes and not others, so if someone is not 100 percent certain what their finish is, just a slightly damp cloth to remove the dust is fine. Something like a beeswax polish every so often is usually ok on most finishes, but again- if you’re unfamiliar with the finish, it’s best to avoid anything but dust removal.
Taking paint off laminate is not usually doable. You could TRY scraping, but stripper melts the plastic-like coating. Easy to remove from wood and veneer though.
Thanks so much 🙏 l do appreciate all your work, it's so helpful to have you on UA-cam 👌 please, if you have time, shed some light on the drawers (when to paint, what do you do if you have bad wood quality on them but the piece itself is nice, how you block odours if the drawer is already pained etc) and some troubleshooting if the painted drawer get stuck 😀 🤦 yepp, a lot to learn here in Norway😅
Thank you so much for giving us newbies some pointers. I needed them for sure. I have just started my refinishing furniture journey. 2 pieces down and now I'm staring down a (I'm pretty certain) veneer dresser. It's been in our family for a little bit and want to save it but it has some pretty rough damage. I'm not sure which way to go with it so this one may take me some time. 🤔🤨
High Density Fiberboard (HDF) is an engineered board produced from resin bonded wood fibers under high pressure and heat. HDF is a non-load-bearing product for interior use in dry conditions. HDF, due to its very fine surface, is suitable for different coatings - veneering, laminating, painting and varnishing.
Thank you for sharing this video and all the great information. It answered a lot of my questions. One question I do have is how do you answer “Is this a solid wood?” I am always on the fence trying to decide how much to disclose because as you said people seem turned off when the answer is no it is not solid wood. On the other hand, I do not want to be dishonest. Can you give me some guidance?
I can share with you what I tell people - More than 3/4 of mid century furniture was constructed this way, to save money AND valuable resources (particularly exotic woods like mahogany and teak), and thank goodness they did it this way or there'd be none left. It may not appeal to some, but it makes the furniture extremely stable from a wood movement perspective, where solid wood is very prone to cracks and checks when it expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. It allows MORE furniture to be made from the same exotic wood, rather than one single temperamental piece of furniture, and it makes it more affordable for both the maker and the consumer. Have a look at retail prices of this furniture and the fact that they sell like hotcakes.. and then ask where the value is, haha. It's not just mid century though. A LOT of antiques with stunning woodgrain are also veneers. Veneer doesn't mean cheap. And the pressed wood of the mid century era is not the same as the 1980s and 1990s junk.
Great tips! Beautiful dresser! Welcome to UA-cam ! Excited to hear you are from NS! I was thinking from your other videos you were Canadian! I didn’t pick up on your NS accent! I’m from NS and currently living in AB!
Oh neat! I lived in Calgary for a few years in my early/mid 20s. I loved how it was so different from NS but ultimately I missed the ocean too much. Haha
What about "tolerances"? How many coats thick can paint be to interfere with closing doors or drawers (as in using multiple coats of different colors for a distressed look)?
Even though I already know what you explained your video was well explained, good job, you stated that you live in Nova Scotia Canada just, wow nice place to live

I mean, laminate can be redone. HOWEVER - it is not, on any level, solid wood.
So helpful! Loved the info! I’m still learning and hoping to grow my furniture business especially after I retire as a nurse! Thanks!

Crazy! I just found your channel this morning and I was just describing all of this to someone just a few hours ago.
Great explanation of differences! Very easy to follow and understand. Thank you.
Thank you posting this. I’ve been so confused as to what is wood and what isn’t and what is a mixture. I’ll have to watch this again and take notes. 💕

Beautiful dresser. Thank you for the tutorial and clarifying laminate versus veneer. Your work is exceptional I enjoy watching your process. 🌸

That's wonderful!
Bonsoir Angie, thank you so much, very informative. Your dresser turned out beautiful! Christine 🇨🇦

i did find it informative, but KITTY! that kitty is so cute!
Thank you for this... I'm still learning! 🙂
Love sanding and staining wood really thinking of making a little business out out it.
This video is answer to my prayers!
Extremely informative. You are a great educator.

I don't think I understand what you're asking.

Gracias!!!!! Well explained and truly informative! Will definitely become my go to video when I need a refresher!!! 😃😅
Have you worked with bamboo furniture? Wondering if I can use oxalicacid on it?
Wow, you're so knowledgeable 💕🌻 Thank you for sharing 💕🌻
Can you explain what is high density manufactured wood? I see that everywhere
