I've said this for years now. Super Mario Sunshine was my favorite game as a kid and i can only imagine how good a sequel would be with all the technology and engines they have now. Unfortunately we will never see it:/
I actually planned out a Super Mario Sunshine 2 in detail once. In short: A mysterious beam of light steals the Shine Sprites from Delfino Plaza and drags them away to the Sky Archipelago, a group of island shaped like various things you see in the sky, like a bird, a cloud, lightning, the moon et cetera. Hubworld is Delfino Plaza again and you can take boats to all tge islands except the sun island that is surrounded by a dangerous maelstrome. The island are all open sandboxes where you can get various Shine Sprites and of course each has a boss to fight, some from the original Sunshine but with a twist (Monty Mole has a submarine now, King Boo appears as Captain Boo in pirate attire, et cetera), some new. And each island has a theme, of course. And goo to clean up, obviously. Shadow Mario is also there again, causing trouble. You meet two important characters, the hotel owner Estrella and Bowsewr Jr. who is held prisoner on the moon island. He says someone stole his magic paintbrush but he doesn't know who. When we of course make it to the sun island in the end, we learn that Shadow mario is Estrella and that she is working for the big bad if this game - Angry Sun. Now bigger and angrier than ever, thanks to absorbing a ton of Shine Sprites.
This is a very good idea! I'm going to guess Piantissmo II is Shadow Mario because of the ending in SMS (I can't get over with that ending to this day!).
What I love about Sunshine is the ambience. Odyssey brags about globe-trotting and what not but cannot hold a candle to isle delfino which truly feels like a real world location youd want to vacation in. Sprawling beaches, hotels, indigenous populations, a thematic about cleannig the enviornment and the challenging mechanics that come with Fluud and with a practical sensical map design that doesnt feel video-gamey, its still my second favorite Mario game next to galaxys 1 and 2
Excellent take! I think it's very close to being my favorite 3D Mario, with Galaxy being ever so slightly above it. My sister and I loved playing this game and still do when we are able to. I think they would find a way to bring Yoshi into the water somehow, that would be neat. Also meeting Charles Martinet last month for the first time, we both talked about Sunshine and before I could say it first, he said "I wish they made another Mario Sunshine!" Couldn't agree more...

That would be awesome to see what a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine would look like today with the upgraded technology and software engines Nintendo has now in the modern age of gaming.
Hopefully a Sunshine sequel introduces Mario Jr. Hopefully, Mario and Peach get married and start a family. Besides, Bowser Jr needs his own archenemy.

Wall of text warning, I hope you like this idea The story starts similarly to the first game with Peach’s plane arriving on the Delfino airstrip, this time without any issues. Mario and friends are greeted by a Pianta welcoming party celebrating their arrival but as they exit the plane the airstrip is attacked. Moving toward the airstrip as a goopy substance it jumps from the water and lands on the airplane as a formless pile of goop before reconstituting into a giant polluted Gushen (the octopus guys from Mario odyssey). The welcoming party scatters in fear but much like last time Mario defeats it using a FLUUD unit. It is later explained that since the events of the first game the island keeps them placed around in case of emergencies like this one. It is during this that Mario sees in the distance a shadowy figure in the form of Bowser jr. Immediately after its defeat the Piantas cheer Mario and congratulate him. But then a large shadow overtakes the airstrip as Bowser's airship blots out the sun as it ominously approaches the airstrip, landing right right on top of where Peach's airplane was before it was destroyed. The tension is high as the drawbridge-like front doors of the airship slowly lower to the ground, the inside of the ship completely dark. This is followed by a bunch of Koopalings happily rushing out carrying comically large luggage ( a visual I would like is Wendy filing her nails as she is lying atop a tower of her luggage as it is being carried by Morton.) The group move right past Mario and friends, heading toward the gondola to the main Island as Bowser and Bowser jr are the last to exit the airship, with Bowser looking relieved like a parent who can finally relax after several hours stuck in a car with their noisy children and Bowser jr mentioning he can’t wait to explore the island with his Koopa klown car since he didn’t have it last time. Mario and friends along with all the Pinatas are staring at him and Bowser replies “did i miss something” It immediately cuts to the trial scene from the first game, except this time Bowser Jr is being prosecuted by the Piantas. The Piantas bring up video surveillance of what I will call “shadow Bowser Jr” essentially shadow Mario texture on Bowser jr wrenching havoc on the island. Bower and Bowser jr were originally given amnesty for their antics on Isle Delfino because Bowser promised to leave them a 5 star review, but Jr’s current antics have voided that amnesty. As his punishment Bowser and his family are barred from ever vacationing in isle Delfino again and Bowser jr has to clean up his current mess much like Mario had to do in the first game. Bowser pleads with Mario to help Jr with this, as he knows Jr hates cleaning up, even more so when it isn’t his fault, and he won’t be able to see Jr until the whole island is clean. Mario, Peach, and the toads stare at him in an unimpressed manner. Bowser then gets on his knees and states that he knows they have caused problems in the past but Jr is innocent, Bowser also mentions that his family desperately needs a vacation. Mario reluctantly agrees and decides to help Jr clean up the island while discovering who actually caused this and why they disguised themselves as Bowser jr. This culprit is later revealed to be none other than EL PIANTISSIMO, angry that he was humiliated by Mario in the previous game and that his fame has essentially evaporated on the island due to the events of the first game. He has taken Bowser Jr's paintbrush (as seen in the end of the credits from Sunshine 1) and wreaked havoc on the island with the help of an unseen force. He knew the Piantas wouldn’t fall for the Shadow Mario trick twice so he decided to disguise himself as Bowser Jr to also frame him. He plans to wreak havoc on the island and then come in as the hero to fix the situation, though he has been a bit lazy on that second part. A gameplay idea I had was using Bowser jr’s Klown car to open up new areas in the island, and even have an upgrade to transform it into a submarine to aid Mario in exploring sinister dark ruins deep below the ocean that belonged to a malevolent species that worshiped things called the Abyssal sprites, the dark counterpart to isle delphino’s Shine sprites. I have more idea’s I’d like to share but this is already too long
Every other 3D Mario game was sort of part of a series Mario 64 and Mario 64 DS Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 And even 3D land and 3D world All of them are part of a series except for Odyssey and Sunshine (I’m not sure if Bowser’s Fury would be part of 3D land/world or Sunshine but it’s probably also in a series)
A neat idea I can see for sunshine 2 is having multiple playable characters like the same version of SM64. In this case the character would be Bowser Jr, Mario and Luigi. Mario would have Fludd to wash away the ink, Bowser Jr would have his paintbrush to counteract the ink, and Luigi would have a variation of the Poltergeist that would let his vacuum up the ink. Getting into a possible story, things would have the three working through the islands in an effort to clean them up in various stages the can they could access through a semi open world. These stages would each have four episodes. Episode one would be a clean up level, fixing things up with one of the three playable characters. From there, episodes two and three would each have three variations on them, one for each character. This would end with a fourth episode that would have the trio deal with a boss to complete the stage. This would give each stage 8 Shine Sprites to go after. Though there could be the idea of each stage having a bonus episode once you acquire all 8 shine-sprites on a stage, granting a 9th Shine Sprite to claim after everything is cleaned up. Most Stages would have the trio acquire a certain number of Shine Sprites to unlock them while the final stage would require them to complete every other Stages 4th episode with the bonus episode of the final stage requiring one to collect every other Shine Sprite in the game to finish things off. E. Gadd could also possibly make an appearance, providing a story element with him providing Luigi’s new Poltergeist as well as be using the ink that Luigi vacuumed up to figure out how to counteract said ink. He could also possibly be a fourth playable character as well, having a mix of the trio’s moves using a version of FLUDD, The Poltergeist, and The Paintbrush.
dude imagine the movement tech we could have if they merged oddysey's movement with the fludd, if momentum was a thing we could have a dlc/late post game world that requires really advanced movement tech as they do in celeste for example and even hiding secrets around the main world that you could not get to without movement tech i feel like this would add a lot of skill ceiling + a reason to grind mechanics in a mario game thats not speedrunning
I like Sunshine. My only problem was that Rage Inducing Camera acting up at weird times. Super Mario 3D All-Stars highlighted it when placed with Galaxy.
What I think would be cool is many island that are each semi-open world and each island has a new nozzle you can unlock. You will start on Isle Delfino with just the spray nozzle, and there you will unlock the hover nozzle. Also on Delfino, you will only be able to collect 10% of the shines there with the spray nozzle alone and another 10% of the shines using a combination between the spray and the hover. You will need about 12.5% of the Isle Delfino shines to move onto the next island where you will get the rocket nozzle. You will be able to get like 30% of the shines on the new island and an additional 10% of shines on Delfino. Basically you get new nozzles that allow more shines in all areas.
I loved Sunshine. I can't tolerate repetition, and I felt that Sunshine really shook up the traditional Mario Formula without abandoning the core mechanics. Stellar game. I also hope for a sequel.

As cool as this would be, like you said, Nintendo doesn’t really do sequels (the only reason they actually made Galaxy 2 was because they had so many more ideas that wouldn’t fit in the first, so they just put them all in a new game). Galaxy 2 was also on the Wii along with Galaxy 1, so I think it’s even less likely there will be a sequel for a game on a different console. We probably aren’t even getting an Odyssey 2, on Switch or the Switch successor. I guess it makes sense, Nintendo wants to create a brand new game for a new console (even it is a Switch 2 as opposed to, whatever the Switch is to the Wii/Wii U). There’s no way Nintendo is going to put resources into sequels for older games, it’s just not gonna happen. Fans pull it off sometimes, fortunately, hopefully Nintendo doesn’t sue them, Nintendo issues cease and desist even for projects that aren’t profiting, so just because it’s “free for the fans” doesn’t mean it’s legally safe. I hope ROM hacks are safe……. I’m still looking really forward to playing B3313. On the bright side, we can look forward to brand new concepts and ideas that provide brand new experiences. As cool as it’d be, I’m not sure Nintendo will even want to do a fully open world Mushroom Kingdom game, because too many people actually expect that, and I think Nintendo rather drop unpredictable surprises. Maybe something like B3313, but more bright, colorful, joyful, family friendly. But, a bunch of different worlds connected to each other, some type of dimensions shifting keeping it open world. Or just some entirely new island, kingdom, but giant open world. I’m not sure how you can top Cappy, being that Cappy is literally dozens of powerups in one, letting you become and control almost anything. Maybe focus back on traditional powerups, but in an open world. Maybe Mario’s mustache gains magic powers and can punch and fly and stuff, that’d kind of cool, and quite unique. Even ChatGPT probably can’t predict it.
You know what? I wouldn't mind an Sunshine sequel. It would fixed so many problems that the original has. Like the level designs, the missions, the difficulty spikes, the physics, the mandatory progression, the difficulty spikes, the plot, the 100% completion, etc. If we get something like an combination between Odyssey & Bowser's Fury gameplay style with alot more polished and better quality, than it be an superior sequel.
I want to see Bowser take on Mario with a water gun if the game is about water, Maybe the the first 2 battles Bowser pushes you off the edge with a water gun and then the third battle gets scarier.
If Super Mario Sunshine gets a Sequel,it should resume where the First ended,at least according to the Picture after the end credits with 119 Shines or less,where il piantissimo Finds the Brush
If they make a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine then they should have it where Mario and Peach got married and are on a honeymoon and introduce Mario Jr as a player 2. At this point Mario and Peach should just tie the knot and raise a family. Yet having Peach as a third player character and have perhaps the Queen of the Koopas as the villainess of the game.
What it will probably be is a new splatoon game with stages themed on Mario sunshine, or even the whole land is Mario sunshine themed. Maybe leaving hints of Mario stuff, hope you see this comment nin10do land 👍
I thik if they do make a sequel it would be a mario oddesy like game where its an open world and uou travel to the different islands after doing quests and collecting stars then at the last island you fight bowser with the help of bowser jr ,peach,luigi,yoshi and then you find out shadow mario was actually still alive somehow so then you fight him
Sunshine is my third favorite mario game, after galaxy and 64, I would totally play a second sunshine game, my ideas for the game?, well they definitely have to repeat the rollercoaster game, improved graphics, peach in bikini, personally I would like a complex plot with some twists, but nintento is against that.

Mario Sunshine is still the best controlling 3D Mario. So responsive with it's snappy controls. Mario games that came after always feel slow in comparison
I loved Sunshine as a kid, but all the bugs and game design flaws became very apparent when I replayed it with 3D All Stars. It could use a ground up remake to fix all those issues and become a really great game.
I loved Super Mario Sunshine and this was the first time Bowser Jr made an appearance as the perpetrator behind making Isle Delfino an absolute mess. If Nintendo does make Super Mario Sunshine 2 it would be good to see Bowser Jr make a return and so on.
Super Mario Sunshine isn't my favourite Mario game, because yes it have bugs and glitches, but i'm fine with those. Sunshine is just too hard and diffrent game as a Mario game, that's why I hate, but love it too. I like it's diffrent Story and defienitily the Voice acting what it have. As an owner of Super Mario 3D All Stars where is Super Mario Sunshine, It would be so awesome to see Super Mario Sunshine 2 coming to Switch. I actually want a Galaxy 3 over Sunshine. I personally think Galaxy 2 is one of the best Mario games ever made. I would really like a Galaxy 2 remaster alongside with a new Galaxy game.

It was on the GameCube, and it's much more appreciated nowadays than it was back then. A remake would sell amazingly, especially with a much bigger audience.

dude imagine the movement tech we could have if they merged oddysey's movement with the fludd, if momentum was a thing we could have a dlc/late post game world that requires really advanced movement tech as they do in celeste for example and even hiding secrets around the main world that you could not get to without movement tech
i feel like this would add a lot of skill ceiling + a reason to grind mechanics in a mario game thats not speedrunning
I like Sunshine. My only problem was that Rage Inducing Camera acting up at weird times. Super Mario 3D All-Stars highlighted it when placed with Galaxy.

I think a sequel to Mario Sunshine would actually be really cool! Imagine if there was a gaint F.L.U.U.D Soacker Mech you could pilot!
What I think would be cool is many island that are each semi-open world and each island has a new nozzle you can unlock. You will start on Isle Delfino with just the spray nozzle, and there you will unlock the hover nozzle. Also on Delfino, you will only be able to collect 10% of the shines there with the spray nozzle alone and another 10% of the shines using a combination between the spray and the hover. You will need about 12.5% of the Isle Delfino shines to move onto the next island where you will get the rocket nozzle. You will be able to get like 30% of the shines on the new island and an additional 10% of shines on Delfino. Basically you get new nozzles that allow more shines in all areas.
I loved Sunshine. I can't tolerate repetition, and I felt that Sunshine really shook up the traditional Mario Formula without abandoning the core mechanics. Stellar game. I also hope for a sequel.

We already had Sunshine 2, it was Bowser’s Fury. And yes it was a true sequel, because of Bowser Jr., the ink, etc.
As cool as this would be, like you said, Nintendo doesn’t really do sequels (the only reason they actually made Galaxy 2 was because they had so many more ideas that wouldn’t fit in the first, so they just put them all in a new game).
Galaxy 2 was also on the Wii along with Galaxy 1, so I think it’s even less likely there will be a sequel for a game on a different console.
We probably aren’t even getting an Odyssey 2, on Switch or the Switch successor.
I guess it makes sense, Nintendo wants to create a brand new game for a new console (even it is a Switch 2 as opposed to, whatever the Switch is to the Wii/Wii U).
There’s no way Nintendo is going to put resources into sequels for older games, it’s just not gonna happen. Fans pull it off sometimes, fortunately, hopefully Nintendo doesn’t sue them, Nintendo issues cease and desist even for projects that aren’t profiting, so just because it’s “free for the fans” doesn’t mean it’s legally safe. I hope ROM hacks are safe……. I’m still looking really forward to playing B3313.
On the bright side, we can look forward to brand new concepts and ideas that provide brand new experiences.
As cool as it’d be, I’m not sure Nintendo will even want to do a fully open world Mushroom Kingdom game, because too many people actually expect that, and I think Nintendo rather drop unpredictable surprises.
Maybe something like B3313, but more bright, colorful, joyful, family friendly. But, a bunch of different worlds connected to each other, some type of dimensions shifting keeping it open world.
Or just some entirely new island, kingdom, but giant open world.
I’m not sure how you can top Cappy, being that Cappy is literally dozens of powerups in one, letting you become and control almost anything.
Maybe focus back on traditional powerups, but in an open world.
Maybe Mario’s mustache gains magic powers and can punch and fly and stuff, that’d kind of cool, and quite unique.

You know what? I wouldn't mind an Sunshine sequel. It would fixed so many problems that the original has. Like the level designs, the missions, the difficulty spikes, the physics, the mandatory progression, the difficulty spikes, the plot, the 100% completion, etc. If we get something like an combination between Odyssey & Bowser's Fury gameplay style with alot more polished and better quality, than it be an superior sequel.

If they make a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine then they should have it where Mario and Peach got married and are on a honeymoon and introduce Mario Jr as a player 2. At this point Mario and Peach should just tie the knot and raise a family.
Yet having Peach as a third player character and have perhaps the Queen of the Koopas as the villainess of the game.

I loved Sunshine as a kid, but all the bugs and game design flaws became very apparent when I replayed it with 3D All Stars. It could use a ground up remake to fix all those issues and become a really great game.

Super Mario Sunshine isn't my favourite Mario game, because yes it have bugs and glitches, but i'm fine with those. Sunshine is just too hard and diffrent game as a Mario game, that's why I hate, but love it too. I like it's diffrent Story and defienitily the Voice acting what it have.
