      Hey, even if it's hokum, you can still buy it to wear at a rave. Ah hell, okay first you need to borrow your sister's time machine, then you have to go to the 1990s, when raves were relevant, and THEN you could wear that. You'd be the most memorable person at the Oakenfold show.

    To the editor who marked the missing children found, as a mom you brought me to tears. I remember those arcade games, those faces, and would pray that they would be found or answers given, as I was a child myself at the time and couldn't do much more than that. Thank you Kevin and Decoding the Unknown for giving me some answers.

    My husband played Eternal Darkness when he was home sick one day. He said there were two other mind tricks he remembers the game playing: 1. A fly on the screen that was actually coded into the game and 2. A message that said “thank you for trying the demo; buy the game when it’s released” so he *almost* took the disc out to check it and would have lost an hour’s worth of progress.

      I remember playing the game as a kid one stormy night. The mood was already tense, so when the tv screen suddenly appeared to turned off I had a brief moment of intense panic thinking the power had gone out and I had lost hours worth of gameplay. Before I could even reason that the lights in the room were still on so it couldn't have been the power, the screen flashed back to the game and my character cried out "This isn't really happening!" To this day it remains one of the most memorable scares a game has ever pulled on me.

      I remember when it would pretend to delete your save games. It would also lower the volume down, both audibly and visually. Back in those days a lot of TVs had a distinctive look to their volume indicator on screen and the game would mimic that as the volume dropped.

    Quick correction regarding Sad Satan: the Will Smith image was from one of the cleaned up versions of the game. The original image I believe was a screenshot from the show Hannibal.
    Damnit, Simon, glockenspiel is one word. It's like a small xylophone (hence fitting with the username "instrument")
    It didn't occur to me that they might not have the "word" blech in the UK, but r/eyeblech and r/eyebleach are very different. Eyebleach is cute kitten photos and stuff, used to bleach your eyes after seeing horrible things.

    About the whole "Unethical to do that to a corpse" convo: At the University of Tennessee - Knoxville they have what is locally known as the "body farm." I believe it was the first one to be made and there are similar things all over the world now. It takes bodies donated to science and puts them in areas to let them be weathered by the elements and in different stages of decay, as well as other stuff. This study has led to improved forensic science and have helped solve murders and identify victims that may otherwise not be.

Instead of regular dialogue, you get a whole series of dark lines that Hawke says to themselves.

      Yeah. Which is science so... If I remember right, it was just all sorts of code violations over storage and handling that got them in trouble. A friend's mom donated her body to science, hoping it would be used to research the disease that took her. Fast forward some time (she was put on ice for the meantime) and my friend's father sent an email, opening with, "We have an opportunity!" As if it was a real estate deal. Turns out this research institute wanted to use her body as a "high velocity impact subject," i.e. crash test dummy. Regardless, my friend and her sister nixed that idea.
      Morbid, I know, but I still laugh whenever I think about that email.

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 6 місяців тому +12

      One of the main issues with that particular instance was that she signed off with a specific university for medical research, but they then coordinated with a body broker to sell her off to the highest bidder which happened to focus on artillery firing testing.
      Which is why I always say if you want to donate your body to science, or you want to donate your family member’s body as a means to affordably process their remains (since unfortunately a large number of “donations” are due to the affordability of agreements that the facility will cover the cremation costs), read the fine print and do research on the facility you’re donating it to. I personally intend to donate my body to the body farm in Tennessee, but I have done extensive research on how they handle their donations and I am perfectly comfortable with that. If my eventually discarded flesh suit can be studied in a way that may help solve a crime just a little bit faster and bring solace and justice to a family, I’ll happily do so.

      @Nefville 6 місяців тому

      I found out that apparently many bodies donated to "science" are just chopped up for parts that are then sold to other companies for procedures like repairing tendons or cornea transplants - for profit of course. Even worse, companies and the military buy these bodies for things like crash tests and testing ordinance, guns, explosives. Here in the US its illegal to buy or sell human remains so the only way these body parts can get onto the market is by donation and so there are fine print and stipulations in donation forms that sneak your consent to giving away your body for non-scientific (mostly profit-based) research and applications. Look into it, its worse than you can imagine.

    People are weird about human cadavers these days. I watch a lot of historical vids and saw a comment suggesting they should track down the descendants of a mummified body so they could get 'closure'... For a 2000+yr old body. Like someone actually thought thousands of people would find some sort of 'closure' to know a mummy they are slightly related to was found. Some people really have experienced far too little in life.

      By the time you get to 2000 years ago, millions could be descended from that one person. Whole villages become interconnected. Who do you contact? There's a saying that "everyone in England is related to William the Conqueror." Go back far enough, nearly every person of European descent is related to some noble family. My family traces back to French nobility, but I don't need "closure" for those who were beheaded in the Revolution.

    4:30 he forgot the _far_ scarier (in)sanity effect of the game telling you your controller is not plugged in while several enemies are beating the crap out of your character.
    Though, he's incorrect about the nonexistent enemies being able to kill you.
    I played Eternal Darkness a lot back in the day and there are 2 types of sanity effects (that's what they were called despite being caused by insanity, it is the internet after all and e.g. "noclip" is glitching trough walls despite clipping is when textures glitch into each other even though this looks wrong because e.g. hair and accessories have no collision so one character's hat is halfway in the face of another one or the hair is swallowed by the clothes so noclip should be not when this happens with walls but when it does not happen), minor and major sanity effects:
    minor sanity effects were stuff like blood running down the walls, distant screams or baby cries, eyes on portraits moving, etc. and none of this had any effect on the gameplay whatsoever (except iirc in this one place these made it really hard or even impossible to find the hidden way to proceed)
    major sanity effects only ever triggered when entering a new room and were stuff like bsod, disconnected controller, walking on the ceiling, shrinking with every step, reversed controls, random instant death, etc..
    However, these were only ever cutscenes and had also zero impact on the gameplay. After the the cutscene ended and you had your shock the game returned to normal, though these were only triggered with really low sanity so usually minor effects would continue until you refilled your sanity meter.
    It's such a shame there never was a sequel as it would have been amazing, but sadly the dev studio Silicon Knights ended doing something really stupid and got into a massive lawsuit because of their own fault that ended up breaking up the company and the IP was simply forgotten.
    100% sure an Eternal Darkness 2 kickstarter would get millions withing 24 hours.

      As someone who had to fill out LOTS of forms so my body can be donated when I die, most programs don't give you any choice and you are made extremely aware of that at every step of the way, then your family is informed of that again after you pass just to make sure no one is going to try and sue them. I specifically wanted my body being used for medical research because of some rare health issues I have. I had to go searching to find a place that didn't focus on medical cadavers and instead focused on research. Even then, you can state your preference for the type of research but have to also agree that this might not happen. The forms for donating a body for science also include specifics of some of the things that could happen to the body, including it being cut up, burned, beheaded, etc. If it was in a textbook, there's a very high chance that it was a body burned in a specific way to allow for different stages of burning and such to be shown in one image or something like that. If that was the case, it's 100% ethical as long as the deceased agreed to this or stated these wishes in their will and the family agreed.

As the GTX980 Ti which has 6GB of vram not 4 and is quite a jump in power (~15% faster) can manage high 50 FPS in Cyberpunk at 1080p on the medium settings. No Ray tracing obvs and will stutter a bit in that 3 and half year old game (Dec 2020). Newer games like jedi Survivor (April 2023) is stil over a year old and runs about the same as Cyberpunk does on the 980ti but I hear is unplayable on the non ti because it has issues with 4Gb of vram even at 1080p.
      Given gaming (on pc at least) is typically at 1440p or 4k and at least 60fps if not higher and both those games are old now I would say you are stretching the term viable a bit there. Like saying a horse is a valid method of travel for the work commute which it 100% is as long as you ignore that everyone else is in cars or trains or aircraft or that the playstation 4 is still viable, which again it is but times have moved on and viable is an extremely low bar.
      AMDs 7600 which is the lowest end card they currently offer is more than twice as fast and given how much a GTX980 cost in 2014 I'd expect most owners of them to be able to afford at least that or the 4060. Technically your 100% correct but a gtx 980 (or the Ti) is a very bad gaming experience in 2024 if you want to play current games. While I am a huge PC nerd (you can probably tell) everyone on GTX era cards should just buy a playstation 5 if they aren't willing to upgrade the pc they are cheaper than the GTX980 was 10 years ago by itself not including the rest of a PC

Basically, it was common practice at the time the game came out for developers to add a bunch of junk data to fill out the extra space on a disc (I forget exactly why), and it’s confirmed that whoever was tasked with adding the junk data to the game just added a rip of an episode that they had downloaded on their work station to fulfill that purpose.

    @9:43 From my little understanding of Arcades, they would a lot of the time just reuse their Cabinets and convert them to new games via swapping out their innards and boards. That practice is actually a reason why so many classic arcade games and some slightly obscure gems have been nearly been lost to time, especially in their original cabinet glory.

      As a kid, I drank the brand of milk that the first missing kids' pictures were on and I remember when they went missing, they were both paperboys in a city about 2 hours away from where I grew up.

    I love this kind of stuff, creepy video game dives. And I've totally played Eternal Darkness! It is sort of laughable but they did such a good job of making it unsettling, startling and make you question what's real in the game. Such a classic.
