Thank you so very much. This most helpful bloom mixing video I have seen. It helped me to discover that my pillow paint is to thin and that I can save it without running out and buying another can.
I’m so happy to have found your videos! You are so calm and clear. I feel reignited so, video #7 next and then I’m going to mix up some paint ready for my day off work tomorrow!!! Hooray! Thank you for sharing your knowledge ⭐️👍
So glad you did this video. I'm getting back into blooms after a 2 year hiatus from them. Tried some colored Oops paint but didn't know how to thicken it. You're a lifesaver Mitchell 👍❤ See you over in the group. Been a member there since the start.
Thanks so much! I just checked my pillow & had no idea it was so thin. I'm using Glidden eggshell for my pillow. I added Infiniy untinted base and some Behr untinted. I live in SW Florida.
Graciaaaas!!!
Thank you for your video, I've already spent thousands on paint and excesseries, I've got floetrol that doesn't work, from the UK, Floetrol from Austrailia (a gold bar would have been cheaper) I have a variety of paints to the well known to the school paints, I've stuck to well known brands so far but I'll experiment with it later. I've had help along the way from some very kind people but my work hasn't been consistently good origen close but I'll get there, I will take the course and see if that improves my paintings. Thank you
I’m so glad you posted this video on the FB group. I’ve been looking for your UA-cam channel since your live TLP color reveal. Your presentation skills are awesome, thank you so much!
Very helpful - thank you! My Behr 8300 is extremely thick and I made two different versions of PM yesterday (with JoSonja) and felt I was adding too much varnish to thin it out. Going to adjust today with SW infinity per Debra’s suggestion.
During my second viewing I caught something...sometimes when I'm mixing a tube paint w a pm i see or think i see a lump. Does that actually happen if I'm mixing too aggressively?
You can absolutely have lumps of paint if you don't mix them thoroughly enough! I do every now and then but using the Fluid Art Co paint blender really helps to prevent that :) It makes mixing my paints so much quicker and easier now and I know there'll be no lumps in there.
My paints were made with Varathane triple thick and Behr 3300 and they are too thick. I am afraid to thin them with Josonja because if they have too much varnish, won't my cells disappear?
Thanks for the video! This is what I understand from the video. The pillow paint (5-6 seconds) is thicker than the pouring medium paint (2-3 seconds). Is the cell activator thicker or thinner than the pouring medium paint?
Yes that's correct :) each layer you float on top should be thinner than the last. The cell activator consistency is shown in my other video 'Experiment Time' if you need to see that one :)
Mucous might be a better alternative to snot, just a suggestion of course! I’m loving your information though. Your explanation is better than what I have watched from all the others over here in America. Women paint pour jump around and aren’t to confident. They seem like they are guessing, which is confusing. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the feedback! The aim of my channel is to really break down and explain one or two topics per video so its easily digestible and relatable . I'm glad I'm succeeding there :)
I am in the US and I use Sherwin Williams color to go, in various colors and Valspar ultra untinted base and neither are that thick. I may need to get a gloss gel. 🤔
I just stumbled across your videos and definitely a happy accident. I subscribed after 5 minutes of watching. Explaining mixing/consistency in an easy to understand way, living in Australia myself, means I'm luckily familar with the products listed. Some I already use. I've watched so many vids on acrylic pouring that I too much information and that leads to confusion. Yet in two of your videos I have acquired the necessary teaching to have a better grasp on the basics. I may have missed it, but when is the best time to add Australian Floetrol to the mix? many thanks for taking the time to share your learnings with us
Thank you so much for your kind words! Glad I could help! The floetrol is only for your Cell Activator and does not go in any other layers. in my video Experiment Time I show the correct consistency for my CA at about the 30 minute point :)
Just subscribed. Wow, this is a very thorough visual and great camera view of Pillow and PM consistencies explained perfectly !!! Thank you. I'm in USA, tried many of the recommended pillow paints in our course handbook ). My PM always seems thicker. I'll try adding the Golden Medium gel gloss that I have. I thinned out my Aussie CA by adding more CA, I'll blow - then see everything pull back towards the center... then it seems just too thick & I'm blowing the heck out of the puddle to move it ! My blow is great (per Debra) , colors are the same consistency. Its a crap shoot whether I get those nice cells - most times tiny cells & lacing. If I use a straw, then I can see cells beneath but then the pillow ends up coming through. any thoughts ? Thank you....
It really is all down to getting the consistency perfect, and certain pillow paints just work far better than others. If your pillow is too thick don't go adding any gel mediums to it as that will make them thicker. Try adding GAC800 to thin it down a touch, or just some water will also do the trick. You could also use your American floetrol to thin it down as that won't react with the Australian stuff in the CA. Once you figure out that perfect balance and can pinpoint what's causing the nice cells rather than the crappy ones it becomes far easier to replicate across all colours and pours. Just keep practicing!
Thank you, you really know all this very well !!! my pillow paint is never too thick - if anything, no matter what paint on the recommended USA list that I use, it is too thin ! This morning, I tried to thicken my pillow with my untinted paint Behr8300 (thick and similar gel quality to what you showed in this video) but then nothing spread out with the blow ! It was a tug of war to get that paint to move !
Thanks Mitch! This was helpfull a lot. Ive heard from someone in the group like it should be 3 sec for pillow, 1 sec for PM and 0 for CA. Maybe this is the reason I didnt have a good results. Also, it would be nice to know, should we add Jo Sonja and untinted paint to tube paints the same like you said for pigments?? Thanks again for sharing this video :)
That's what I used to recommend but have since found its way too thin. Something has changed in our paints in Australia and makes that thinner consistency harder to work with. Thickening it up a little makes it much more workable
You should be able to as long as there is no other Owatrol specifically in the rest of the bloom. Different paints from different countries will behave differently so all I can speak for are the ones I've personally used. But give it a go and if it works that's a bonus for you :)
I get mine from Amazon. The brand changes based on availability so you'll have to look for yourself. Just look for 12" stainless steel cake turntable and it'll show up :)
Is the untinted paint the same as flat white or a flat paint in eggshell base. I'm in Mexico and this is what I'm being told. Do you suggest something else I can use?
No it definitely is not. It is untinted meaning there is no pigment at all added to the paint. If it says white anywhere on the label it will have titanium white pigment in it and dull your colours. What you will need to do is ask for a paint that will dry clear if you don't have it tinted. Often those will be labelled as 'Base C' or 'Ultra Deep Base' and that's what you are looking for
This was so helpful. Thank you! My pillow was definitely too thin. When I add tube paint colors to the PM, It thickens up. Should I be adding Jo Sonja varnish to get the consistency back to what the pouring medium was on its own, 2-3 second trace?
Great video. Question- I saw a guide you posted somewhere that listed troubleshooting for many failed blooms such as small cells , CA not moving, etc. I thought I saw it on Shelee's FB page but cannot find it. I'd like to print it out. Can you direct me to where I can locate it? My issue now is very tiny lacing & equally tiny cells. I'm using a new Pillow and paints are all same consistency... Thank you so much...
The Josonja is preferred as it's thicker and gives the best results, but you can use Velljo varnish or Liquitex if you've got it, just don't use the High Gloss Liquitex as it's too thick and glossy .

No your CA should be thinner than your colours. Check my video Experiment Time for the correct consistency
