Many, many thanks for taking the time to produce such a helpful, informative tutorial. I've learned a lot from this! I live in the UK and finding untinted base paint was not as straightforward as I expected. You can't get it in B&Q or Wickes. I had to call around several shops and eventually found a Crowne Paint store nearby that sold untinted house paint. However, I had to buy THREE separate 1-litre tins -- one to be mixed with dark pigments, one to be mixed with medium colour pigments, and one to be mixed with light pigments. Because apparently even the "untinted" house paint had SOME colour in them (that's what they told me!). This is an expensive hobby, but I'm bound and determined to finally -- one day -- create a nice fluid art painting with gorgeous cells and lacing. For once in my life LOL! Thanks again!

Hey Mitch Can't find your vedio on ratio of pillow paint and paint from the tile to the 6x6 I want to download for my information..I am really working on creating my own how to when I need it.. Thanks again..Oh about Zeus is my new one I am getting for be beach going to add another color with it ..I hear you say that you like it I did from the get go
This is a great tutorial. Wondering what the ratios would be for a Dutch pour using regular pouring medium instead of floetrol as to not achieve cells. 🤔 if the pouring medium is a little thicker than the floetrol, maybe more water is added
Hi Kristal! What you need to learn is to ditch the ratios and eyeball things. Ratios are a great starting point for a rough idea, but no matter which technique you do, learning to judge consistency by eye and feel is the most important skill to learn. Also thoroughly understanding what each component of your pouring medium actually does is a big part of this too and will help determine whether you actually need it in your pour. In this case you would be absolutely correct in saying that using pouring medium and water would give a different result to using floetrol, however in a Dutch pour you are almost always guaranteed to get some cells because of how fluid the paints are. Generally if you want no cells you make the pm much thicker. Floetrol is designed to reduce the surface tension of house paint and this is the crucial part of why we love it so much for cell creation. It doesn't make the paint thinner so much as it makes the paint less resistant to the forces that bind it all together.
Thank you Mitchell, this video is great. You mentioned in the video that after a while your Aussie floetrol gets old and thinner... and consistency is okay for Dutch pours but not for blooms. Can you explain how you would thicken things up if you have “old” Aussie flo laying around and want to do blooms? Thank you. ☺️
There is no way to thicken it up once it goes thin. It's not like thickening up paints with gel mediums as the floetrol is a single ingredient in itself with a proprietary formula and a limited date for use. Once it has thinned out that's pretty much it and your only alternative to use it would be for use in wall paint or other pouring techniques.
I know this is 3 years old, but is there anywhere where someone has showed all the pigments on a black or white background? Just more for newbies for ordering pigments ?
It's something I have wanted to do but there are 112 piggies plus the SUP's and PAD's now it's just such a mammoth task to mix and display everything, so personally I don't have anything but it might be worth asking in the TLP Facebook group :)
Hi🙂It was very informative, but I don't know what white paint I should be using. I've used a thinned down white paint with Floetrol, with the TLP's in a pouring medium and wrecked 5 canvases because the all cracked, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Please help! 💜Wen
What technique are you using for your pour? And which brand of white paint? Some paints work better than others just in general, and the pouring medium must be clear drying to get the most out of the TLP's.
Hi your info is fantastic. Can I ask if you can use a paint binder in place of the gel gloss. Reason for asking is that I was told it would work and bought some. Now I’m not too sure. Thank you so much for your excellent info. Very helpful indeed. So glad I found you today.😍
Thank you so much Mitchell helping understanding more, I am Newby with shelee Just join ... you did amazingly step by step explanations extremely clear... unfortunately i have no access of floetrol yet .. can you suggest the closest i can use almost similar please
If you are doing the Blooms there is no substitute for the floetrol. Nothing works like the Australian stuff does. You could try US floetrol 10:1 floetrol:paint but it's not the same. The ingredients in that course are recommended for a reason and not just randomly placed there, and have all been tested and approved multiple times. Give the US stuff a go and work on consistencies and making everything perfect until you can get the floetrol :)

Hello! Back again! Hoping this isn’t another silly question! I’m trying to work out how much ‘paint’ I could likely create out of 1 container of pigment? I would be using the first example in this video referred to as brushing paint. I know there are 20g in each jar, but are you able to tell me, approximately is good enough, how many teaspoons would be in each piggy jar? Or alternatively if you have ever done it, how much one full jar makes up in paint? Thank you in advance ❤
That's like asking how long is a piece of string! 🤣 It all depends on how pigmented you want your paint to be. If you want something just for glazing and being quite transparent, you use less pigment. For more opacity you'd use more pigment. I can only say from experience that I can get over 500ml of Sheleeart pouring medium out of 1 jar of pigment
@@rainandpours thank you so much! I thought it would be a bit like a piece of string. 500ml gives me at least a ball park figure when trying to work out costs vs other products. I would love to try some TLP’s just trying to justify the price in my own head. Really appreciate your help 🥳
Thank you so much for such an amazing and easy to understand tutorial! Extra bonus points for being Aussie so I don’t have to try and convert products or find like ones. I am looking at doing a blob painting. If I used your first mixing technique with the gel gloss, should the combination of TLP and gel gloss be suitable to replace acrylic paint? I think that is what I understood from your video but just looking to confirm. Thank you again for an amazing tutorial and you have a new subscriber too 😀
Glad you found it helpful! Yes you'd be correct, the gel gloss mixed with the TLP will produce a nice thick mixture that you can thin down with tiny amounts of water or a ready made pouring medium until you find the perfect consistency. For blob paintings you want the paint to be really thick, but not so thick you can't push it through the nozzle of the bottle. It's a challenging one to perfect but you can do it! :D
The baby food containers can be purchased from Fluid Art Co in the USA now (link in the description) and my storage unit is an Ikea Billy bookshelf that I customised myself :)
Absolutely a great video. I think your voice is cool. Anyway, Can you use this recipe with other pigments. I have pearl ex and primary elements? I did take the course, and loved it.
Excellent presentation Mitchell. Can you tell me where I can purchase the baby food containers. I got my first ones last year at the Reject shop but haven't been able to find any since that. Thanks
You do the videos so professional I have had no problem following. Thanks! A question. I notice you and Shalee both do and influx of voice at the end of a sentence. So do each area i Australia have a different form of speech and are you also from which. ?
Thank you Laura :) Yes we have been told before that t's something we do! Lisa Marvin has also been told she does the same thing! Not sure why we do it but I tend not when I'm giving a full description rather than just laying things out which is really strange. Nerves maybe? I dunno! I'm from New South Wales and Shelee is from Queensland about 18hrs away from each other haha. Usually we end questions with that high inflection so I just say to people 'we live in a country where everything could kill us why wouldn't we question everything we say?!' haha :D
Great videos I've binged at least five today, i was struggling with the pigments. I've always assumed Floetrol was a pouring medium, although it works well now i understand why my bloom didn't go to plan. Where did you get your lazy susan turn table?
Glad I was able to clarify that for you! I custom built mine with a cake turntable and some fence palings. I get that question a lot so I may have to do a video on that soon :)
Hi. Great tutorial. I'm wanting to use The Taubmens Easy Coat door and trim as my pouring medium but it doesn't appears to be coloured and nor clear. Am I missing something?
If you were mixing it up in a large batch or for thinning it down later then yes definitely :) As I was just demonstrating different ways to mix it up I chose to show the 'mulling' method with the spatula instead
Thanks. For the bloom mixture, at the end you added the house paint to the pigment. Is this house paint mixed with anything (for instance is it your pour medium mixture of house paint plus JoSonja)? In another video someone used the PM as the last addition to the mixture.
In this example I just added the pure house paint, but you can add anything you like from there to thin it down. My preference is Josonja gloss varnish for the bloom technique, but you could use water or GAC800 too.
With the Australian flow troll it makes cells but it’s not the same as adding silicon so I don’t have to clean the canvas before resin, is that right ? :) love your video thank you 😊
I was wondering if you had heard of Pebeo bindex. I bought some thinking this would be a good pouring medium for the pigments. However I should have done some research. There is literally no instructions anywhere for mixing pigments with it. I did see a video of someone using it, but can't find it anymore!
There is a massive difference between some brands and others. TLP only uses high quality pigments and mica, so colour depth, saturation and consistency is always the same. Some brands use lesser quality pigments and mica which can lead to fading, less shimmer, poor mixing into mediums and dull colours over all. I have tested about 10 different brands now and the top three are TLP, Pearlex and Artisue, thought the Artisue pigments work best in resin they can also work well in conjunction with paints.
@@rainandpours I want to get some of the , TLP. And I was kinda of thinking about , Arteza.. I've mainly been using premixed pouring paint. And some of my regular paint. And just thin it out some to pour with. But want to start using mica...
Is the paint neutral. As I noticed in Bunnings they has accent, neutral and white. I am aware it is not white. I must thank you so much for sharing this has been an amazing video I would love to know where you get the baby container. Sorry my questions have been answered
Hey Lorraine! I'm guessing you were asking as the video went along and I covered them later? :D Yes, you want the Taubmans Door and Trim Neutral in Gloss for the pouring medium. The baby food containers can only be found on eBay now, search for 'baby freezer containers' and you should see them :)
Hi Kim. What supplies would those be? I'm pretty sure all of them are definitely available except for the Taubmans paint, which you would use Behr 8300 for instead.
Heavy gel can be bought at Hobby Lobby. The Masters Touch brand works great, and you can get it half price on sale. I've had some 3 years and still good.
Hi Niki! There are several suitable pillow paints for the USA, however I'm not sure exactly which ones as the numbers and cans are quite specific. Lisa Marvin, Karen Durishin (Waterfall Acrylics), Jodie Flynn (The Painted Dreamer), Raina the Witch of WTF and Garrick Brown are all American bloomers and mention their products on their channels. Each prefers a different brand so it might be worth checking them out and seeing which looks like it will work best for you :)
@@rainandpours OK cool thank you I really appreciate the reply. I've been working on being able to bloom and use pigments for over a year and I FINALLY figured somewhT out the bloom but I fail pretty consistently wirh pigments on blooms or blooms swipes.
@@rainandpours Thanks a heap!!! I'm glad there are other products out there that I can use, Jo Sonja is pretty expensive in my books. Thanks for the tips 😁
Hi Marcus! In Australia I got them from Byron and Yorke, however they have been sold out for over 6 months now with no ETA on new stock. Ebay is the only place you can get them now
Hi Mitch..I am in a bit of a pickle & am hoping you can help..I've run out of my Taubmans Door & Trim in Nuetral Gloss & when I went back to my local Taubmans store in Townsville, to my horror they proceeded to tell me that The door & Trim in Nuetral Gloss is no longer being manufactured!..Can you please, please, PLEASE suggest an alternative? Thank you, Klara
Hi Klara! Yes it has been discontinued unfortunately. Shelee is finalising her testing to find the perfect pouring medium for us to use, and when she does she will post in the Sheleeart members group :) If I find one in the meantime I'll share it with everyone here
It should, however Colourarte is formulated differently to other pigment brands and can cause bleeding or fading when mixed with traditional methods. I am not a fan of them and am part of a large number of people who have never been able to make them work for me as they bleed and fade every time. However, if you are able to make them work with this method then that's a good thing for you :)
They definitely are cheaper products our there but the quality is sub par. I've done a few comparisons myself and TLP always comes out on top, and when you do the number crunching they actually work out cheaper per gram compared to most other brands. Because of how they are formulated you also need less to get the colour you need in your work, so they last longer than other brands as well. I understand they aren't within everyone's budget, but that is different to being expensive or overpriced.
@@rainandpours Cheers man i do understand they are very good and would be worth the money but I'm just exploring my options before i buy wondering if any other brands are still good for abit cheaper 🙂
Help! I just spent lots of money on Liquitex Professional Pouring Medium (USA) and I find it’s too thin for blooms. Can you suggest a thickener? PLEASE!!!!! I will be forever in your debt if you can tell me what to use to thicken my LPPM. ❤
Hey Michele! That's correct, ready made pouring mediums are not suitable for blooms. You need untinted house paint. I suggest Lisa Marvin Art as she uses the American ingredients though she is in Canada :) A link to her channel is in my descriptions
I am aware of the situation happening over there but unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. The best person to follow would be Erica Hughes as she is finding a solution in Ireland too :)
Yep that's correct :) Because the bloom mic has varnish in it as well, and adding too much gloss can cause it to be too thin and even make the CA behave strangely. So by just mixing in the untinted paint to the pigment it stays a little thicker and is easier to adjust
Unfortunately for this style of pour the Australian floetrol is essential. You can try fluid-art.co (links in my description) and send them an email, they may be able to ship to you :)
@@rainandpours no it was open twice but then I never open it again it was a 4 ltr one . I transfer a bit in another bottle then never open again for I yr
Very useful explanations and I learn a lot through that video. However, and I am very sorry to say, I really had to force myself watching it. You are who you are and somehow quite unique so I guess it's not about you, it's about me. As a highly sensitive person, there's things that I have a hard time to go along with and your narration was definitely one of them. I think it's the first time I encounter someone that raise its voice tone to mark a period punctuation! And it was quite a pain for my hears. I hope you won't take that too personally and you won't just see here a useless critic. After all, you are an artist but by sharing videos, you are also becoming a content creator and there's always things that can be improved for your audience. It could be lighting, video quality, sound quality editing, etc... and I believe that narration also plays a pro-active role when it's time to appeal (or turn off) your audience and that's why I am sharing my thoughts with you. Anyway, let's wrap this up with positive vibes: the content of this video was extremely interesting and useful so thanks very much for sharing!
Thank you for your comment! It's an Australian thing mate! We constantly question our existence in this country of deadly spiders and snakes and drop bears so we can't help the inflection! Hahaha. No offense taken at all :)
Hi R&P. I think thatI got from a local store the wrong paint I needed for my P. M. When I addition my pigments the result is awful. The color is completely dulled. I think that there is more titanium white in the paint. The paint is Sherwin Williams infinity ultra white interior semigloss. It was 50$ so much and I think it is wrong.
You are looking for a Base 3 or Base C - untinted. Something with “ultra white” in the name, probably has a large amount of titanium white in it, which will pastel out all your colors.
Boy do I know that now. I bought an infinity paint at a Lowe’s home improvement center and paid a little over $60 for the wrong gallon of paint. Won’t make that mistake again. I guess I can always use it for the pillow
Not really if you are making a thick brushing paint as I did in the demo. As I was making it into thinner pouring medium afterwards yes I would have just mixed in the cup. But you would do that process on your artists pallet rather than transferring from one surface to another :)

@@rainandpours thank you
Absolutely a great video. I think your voice is cool. Anyway, Can you use this recipe with other pigments. I have pearl ex and primary elements? I did take the course, and loved it.
You can definitely use these mixing methods with other pigment brands :)
Excellent presentation Mitchell. Can you tell me where I can purchase the baby food containers. I got my first ones last year at the Reject shop but haven't been able to find any since that. Thanks
You get them on wish
I found a few sets at Target but haven't seen any for months. I order them from Campus Co in Brisbane :)
@@rainandpours that would be great, or make them and sell them :).
God bless you. I have asked everyone what those containers all called. You are the best
Hi. Great tutorial. I'm wanting to use The Taubmens Easy Coat door and trim as my pouring medium but it doesn't appears to be coloured and nor clear. Am I missing something?
I'm not sure what you mean? It's a colour similar to condensed milk in the tin and should take on any colour you put into it.
Wouldn't be easier to mix the gel and pigment in the cup instead of mixing it in a tile then transfer it to the cup?
:) love your video thank you 😊
That's right you don't to thoroughly scrub your canvas as the floetrol doesn't have oil in it. A quick wipe down before resin is recommended though
Thank you :)
Do those things cleam out well? Can you just peel out the left overs of the paint?
Yes you can! Once the paint is dry it peels right out and any stubborn bits come out with a bottle brush or a scourer :)
I was wondering if you had heard of Pebeo bindex. I bought some thinking this would be a good pouring medium for the pigments. However I should have done some research. There is literally no instructions anywhere for mixing pigments with it. I did see a video of someone using it, but can't find it anymore!
I have heard of it but not sure what it actually is. I do remember seeing the same video but also escapes me too!
How much difference do you think there is. Between pigments , colors and quality.
I s there any bad ones that don't work well for pours.
@@rainandpours
I want to get some of the , TLP. And I was kinda of thinking about , Arteza..
I've mainly been using premixed pouring paint. And some of my regular paint. And just thin it out some to pour with. But want to start using mica...
Hi, can I use acrylic paint instead of house paint please?
Hi there! You would need a clear acrylic medium to mix the piggies into. Have a look at video #99 for my newest mixing video
For the USA, what would you recommend to use instead of Taubmans Easy Coat Door and Trim Neutral?
Behr 8300 is the best replacement for that :) or I believe Valspar 2000 but not sure of the finish
Mitchell your teaching is very good but your using many supplies we do not have in the States
Do you know an alternative for the pillow paint for the bloom? An American version?
Loved the video!!! But I'm wondering why your the first ever person to not use Jo Sonja gloss varnish for mixing the TLP pigments?
I actually do use it when I mix them haha. But my goal was to show that it's not the only thing you can use :)
@@rainandpours Thanks a heap!!! I'm glad there are other products out there that I can use, Jo Sonja is pretty expensive in my books. Thanks for the tips 😁
Could you please advise where you purchased the baby food containers. :-)
Shelee is finalising her testing to find the perfect pouring medium for us to use, and when she does she will post in the Sheleeart members group :) If I find one in the meantime I'll share it with everyone here
@@rainandpours Thanks Mitch..
Will this work on all pigments? As well as pigments with Mica powders? Like ColourArte?
It should, however Colourarte is formulated differently to other pigment brands and can cause bleeding or fading when mixed with traditional methods. I am not a fan of them and am part of a large number of people who have never been able to make them work for me as they bleed and fade every time. However, if you are able to make them work with this method then that's a good thing for you :)
Hey mate. Just wondering if there is pigments that's not so expensive? But still good for acrylic paint pouring.
I'm in Northern Ireland and the only untinted house paint we have is really runny so can I see gel gloss to it?
I am aware of the situation happening over there but unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. The best person to follow would be Erica Hughes as she is finding a solution in Ireland too :)
So when you mix TLPs for blooms, you just disburse the TLP in Josanja Gloss Varnish and only add untinted paint? Not your normal Pouring Medium?
Yep that's correct :) Because the bloom mic has varnish in it as well, and adding too much gloss can cause it to be too thin and even make the CA behave strangely. So by just mixing in the untinted paint to the pigment it stays a little thicker and is easier to adjust
Hi I live in whyalla SA and I can't get turbans easycoat bunnings don't deliver here what would be another alternative for the bloom please 🙂
The Easy Coat has now been discontinued. The substitute is Taubmans Water Based Enamel in neutral.
@@rainandpours Thank you 😊
Where can I buy the baby food cups with storage holder
Fluid-Art.co sell them :)
Where can I get thos baby food containers with the trays?
I got mine from Target but you can get them on Amazon and eBay
What can i use instead of austr floetrol, hard to get here in the netherlands
Unfortunately for this style of pour the Australian floetrol is essential. You can try fluid-art.co (links in my description) and send them an email, they may be able to ship to you :)
I have 2 lors of Fluetrol more than a year, do you mean that I cannot use it again or what can I do with it
You can use it without issue :) if it is unopened it should be fine.
@@rainandpours What's for sure is that don't lack of humor :)
Yes that is the wrong paint as it is white. It needs to be clear. If you are in the USA or Canada use Behr 8300 or Behr Dynasty in the black can.
Thank you for your help with the p.m. paint. I think I’m on the right track now. Thanks
I am in America. Do you know what I can get to replace the Taubmans Easy Coat???
Hey there! Check out Lisa Marvin Art. She is based in Canada but they have the same paints as America :)
@@rainandpours I wasn’t talking about the paint I was talking about the inside trim and door stuff
That is paint...
Wow, it looks like a varnish from the outside lol my bad thank you so much
Too messy and wasteful to mix on tile.
!
Not really if you are making a thick brushing paint as I did in the demo. As I was making it into thinner pouring medium afterwards yes I would have just mixed in the cup. But you would do that process on your artists pallet rather than transferring from one surface to another :)
