This is a special year for motocross. We’ve assembled the top motocross bikes in the world for Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2023 450 MX shootout. Altogether we have seven bikes: the GasGas MC450F, Honda CRF450R, Husqvarna FC450, Kawasaki KX450, KTM 450SX-F, Suzuki RM-Z450 and the Yamaha YZ450F. It’s a special time in the sport because of a confluence of technology, trends and current events. Last year’s winner is unchanged but three others are completely new and another is heavily updated. Plus, one motorcycle that had been somewhat taken for granted has suddenly been rediscovered by the motocross community because of recent events and a shift in values. Going in, we had no idea which bike would win. For this comparison, all the bikes were left stock, as delivered. That includes tires and suspension. In some cases, we have been riding these bikes for months and we’re quite familiar with them. Others are newer, but all were fresh for our back-to-back comparisons.

@scottp760 nope the first Mas produced honda was red and they were always red in racing. When they are a different color is usually small.time racers. Gas Gas came put what the last 15 years they need to be purple or some shit. Get a unique color and maybe people.would buy your bike.
@@joebone3151 I have a 22 GG MC450. I also have my first brand new bike I ever bought. A 1999 Kawasaki KX250. And it's better than new. You can check it out on Reddit. I rode Honda for years. The aluminum frames are not as good riding as the chrome-moly or steel frame bike's. I have owned 5 450's and my GasGas is the best easily. But I am sure the KTM and Husqvarna's are better just from there suspension aspect.

The number one thing killing the sport of motocross is how expensive it is to get started. I’ve been riding since I was 6 years old, my dad was good at making sure I always had a bike and that it actually ran well, but now I’m an adult who lives on his own and I cannot afford to buy a bike. Even older bikes are 5 grand now. The 2005 CRF250R My dad bought in 20010 was only $3000, a 2005 CRF250R is on average 4 grand today. I don’t understand how the price of bikes has shot through The roof, but if the sport is going to grow the prices need to be more affordable. I miss riding every day, simply can’t afford a bike
I got a 2013 CRF450R for 4k in canada which is roughly 3k. You gotta be willing to travel a bit for it and negotiate

There’s plenty of bikes out there that are newer and for the same 4K price. Definitely can find few year old bikes out there for under 5K . you could go buy a new Suzuki for many thousands less than the other bikes..

Nice job on the shootout. I enjoyed hearing your opinion on what each bike does and how they ride. The hard thing about the shootout is that you always have to rank the bikes but that doesn’t always come across as close as it is in real life. Because you pick a number one favorite riding bike when you ride all of them back to back, us average joes take it as an insult against the other bikes that didn’t rank first. The truth is all these bikes are awesome and would be good to great bikes for all of us average riders. None of them would hold us back from riding to our full potential. It’s only when you ride these bikes back to back in the same day at the same tracks that you start to notice the differences and can get a feel for where one bike feels better than others. The real truth is that all seven of these bikes are pretty great and the differences that separate them in the ranking charts are minor. But that’s also the great thing about motocross bikes right now. They’re all so good, we can have fun on any of them. Pick your favorite color or choose the bike based on whichever dealer you get the best service from and you will have a ton of fun no matter which bike you’re on. Leave the brand bashing or the shootout criticisms to the other trolls on the internet and just go have fun riding awesome bikes!

Oh absolutely, back in the day when i had my yz125 yz 250 and had a rm 259 i woulda told you that you were crazy if you told me that one day they would be electric start, 4 stroke, fuel injected, and be badass. Also the ktm 300 fuel injected 2 stroke, that mixes the gas and oil itself i woulda said man what are you smokin... but here we are, i finally bought a 2018 yz250f and was scared to death i was gonna over rev n blow a valve, and didnt expect that performance, but damn, they are really sweet bikes, the smokers are still badass, but what they have done with the thumpers is amazing, great time to ride, hate it that the 600 supersport bikes are dying but thats another story.
kawi is king. to my surprise figured that out last year. had the best time on it.

Last year Dirt Bike said the YZ was REALLY close to the KX. They say the YZ is better this year than last year, but still comes in 2nd. The KX must have been a lot better last year to go unchanged and still win. Usually bikes don't win again when unchanged unless they already were a lot better.
I also always think about another category that doesn't get taken into consideration: maintenance and reliability. I wonder if this would skew the results at all.
If you add maintenance and reliability to the score the Yamaha would be way way ahead. The Yamaha also has a vastly superior tuner app . Dirtbike Magazine really really screwed up .

Let’s not forget you don’t have to add a aftermarket pipe to get more hp out of a Yamaha cause their free app gives you more than you need! Plus the Kawasaki hasn’t done much since 19 to be honest. My friend rode my Yamaha and 2 other guys and he said the Yamaha handles way better and is more predictable. Plus he loves the stock suspension compared to his stock and completely done by someone else. He also had his motor done with high compression piston porting and tuned and he still says the Yamaha pulls better stock!!!!! Blue all the way.
Its probably just due to a different track and conditions. Pick your colour, get the best price and don't let this test result worry you

I bought my first KX450. 2022 about 6 months ago. Been riding Husky for the last 4 year. I'm 6'1 40 years old, 200lbs intermediate and this is the best bike I've owned. Few minor tweeks with bar positions and pegs for zero money and you have it dialed. I revaled and sprung because my weight and engine mounts. The bike handles soooo good. If MXA ranked #1 all bikes went backwards but KX. Only complaint is its a little Jerky on inital throttle but I haven't tried the other couplers yet. Not really a big deal
I’m also 6,1 I’m 250lbs I had a 450 21 Yamaha couldn’t get comfy on the rider triangle … was seat bouncing every jump felt hunched over and cramped when standing was looking at the kx or ktm husky What did you do with the bar positions And pegs ?

I just bought a 2023 Ktm 350 Sxf. Fantastic Bike. Air forks are good. Get one.
Send your suspension to Powerband Racing. Billy is the best at WP suspension. You will be amazed at how well your bike will handle.
Several of my friends are A riders and hate the suspension. The front air forks are junk and are never predictable and do something different… plus one guy put his bike in gear and made grinding sound.. another guy blew his up with not even a few hours. Seen that happen a lot with those bikes. Plus let’s not forget how over priced they are and double the money to rebuild compared to jap bikes!
Also pay attention to the KTM crap smoking in the video coming out of the corner and then when he let off it would puff smoke again! Kmart tune motor! Junk

Team Green ALWAYS! last Christmas 2021 we bought our 11 year old boy his 2022 KX85 one of the only 3 available at that time, and he loves it so much we let him ride a 2022 YZ85 and the Big wheel one and he said his Kawi had more power and was so much more comfortable hes raced 2 amateur season total in 2 states, last one on his new KX85 and he got 5th places in the championship but he got hurt on his practice 2009 KX85 half way through the year and really backed off and fell back to 5th place in points so hopefully this off season he will get it back, i just ordered him his new top end today but im keeping it all stock the bike just runs so good and already has great power for him

my 2014 sxf 450 with 4 gears (yes, 4 gears, in UK we did that until 14/15 change) is still a supreme badass bike, my 2019 exc 500 is also badass in its own way that is unique and diff to my sxf - i will NEVER meet their limits, 99% of you lot wouldn't either so don't be magpies who need what is shiny and 'best' according to media - be realistic

Would have been sweet to see the Beta 450RX. Have heard great things about it.
Beta are already the best factory team in EnduroGP, and they'll soon be fighting for world titles in MXGP as well. In 2024 they'll supposedly enter the AMA MX & SX too. Beta are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Triumph are also on the rise with RC on their factory team. Wish TM and Sherco would enter MXGP...
@@MCJohn-117 I agree, we will definitely see Beta bikes on the podiums in MXGP, and AMA SC and MX in the coming years. The bikes are incredible. My snow bike base next season will be a Beta 480 RR. Unless the Beta 450RX is out by then and available on west coast of Canada. The bikes are incredible, and I’ve rode since I was 4 years old in ‘94. I’ve ridden all the Japanese and Austrian bikes. Haven’t had a chance to ride a Sherco or TM yet tho. Maybe as I get more into Enduro cross and GNCC as I have been the last couple years.
Still really enjoy MX and free riding but I’m sure closer to 40 I’ll be less willing to throw myself off 75-100 foot gaps etc. Which is why I see myself going more serious snow biking. Last weekend I was blasting 85 ft + off a little roller to step down. Landing in 10ft of snow base with 4ft powder on top is a lot different. So much suspension in the bike, track kit and snow. Unless the bike lands on you it’s fairly forgiving. Still has its risks but a lot less than the dirt I’ve rode my whole life. Nothing quite like the feeling of blastin through the west coast alpine/back country on 10ft+ feet of snow on a dirt bike. Can’t wait to build my Beta/TimberSled set up.
@@ChrisMason.333 My neighbor owns a TM 450 Fi, and his brother owns a Sherco 450 SEF Factory. They say the bikes are worth every cent. I own a Suzuki RM-Z450 and I've got no complaints whatsoever. Though I wish Suzuki would return to MXGP...
The 350 has won every lap time challenge that I have seen on the internet. So lap times really are meaning full... Mosiman 3 seconds faster!

One thing I don't like about the austrian bikes... I have seen too many broken frames, with my own eyes, and all of them were at the same place, in the front of the. Frame, at the triple clamps.

IM 6foot 195. Have a 2019 ktm450, picked up a 21 yz450f last fall to try. The yamaha is definatley cramped. I moved bars forward which helped but ended up sending bike down the road, I did like ability to change maps on yamaha. Just picked up a nice 21 kx450f I really like it, have my ktm up for sale now.

@@adamrochester1 I have not ridden the newest ktm chassis. I've had kawasaki before. I lowered pegs and am currently running stock bar position on kx450f as front hole makes it hard to get at compression adjusters on fork. I'm probably going with ktm, suzuki Evo bar as it's a little straighter bend and flexes more than oem renthal bar on kx. I've read newest chassis on ktm has more planted feel on front tire. Would like to compare it to the kawasaki. The kawasaki has tons of feel on front tire compared to my ktm with spring forks especially noticeable when muddy

The real winner is KTM for offering a bike for everyone and continuing to sell a ton of 350’s which is really all the power anyone would ever need.
The KTM wins at being the most expensive so people aren't going to pay that much money for a bike

I do not race and am slow. I only ride open practices for fun. This said, if I was to buy any of these it would be a hard decision IF you did not take price out of the equation. If Price matters the most, Suzuki all day. If not, I would go yamaha. This coming from a 2018 FC 450 owner. Bottom line: go with price/reliability/dealer reputation.
Lastly, I would buy any of the Jap bikes in a heartbeat if they came with a 350 platform.

I’m debating what to get as a 6’2” 200lb novice rider (track) who mostly free rides and trail rides but also gets track time in here and there. I’m thinking most likely getting the YZ450f cause it’s a goof bike for bigger riders and Yamahas are known for reliability and it would go together with my YZ250. I had a 2010 YZ450f that I liked a lot better than my brothers 2011 KX450f which felt stiff and rigid which I don’t like. But the new KX is on my radar too. Honda and KTM are also a possibility but I’m wondering if I’ll like the handling of them. The CRF would go well with my CR500 which is the only running bike I own. Wish I could test each bike like this shootout so I knew which I liked best. Might also get the 300SX or just rebuild and pump up my YZ with a 30-325 kit
Honda will be the most reliable. Ktm will break first. Honda is the middle ground bike that always be doing well. Kawi is just Honda but green. Suzuki is Suzuki. Husqvarna is well honestly no one rides them they are overpriced but good bikes. Yamaha is alright alsway has been good but lacking. Gas Gas needs to change their color. Sorry Honda called red years ago
@@joebone3151 Thanks for the info. Im debating Honda or Yamaha at this point, im just worried about the CRF being too stiff and it handling horribly in comparison. I haven’t ridden any newer 450 really but I had a 2010 YZF for a very short time that I liked but never got to really ride and find out. I don’t wanna get the Honda and be disappointed in its handling and power output. Maybe it’s because I got used to racing and riding my YZ250 with suspension that was sprung too light for my weight for so long, but I didn’t like how stiff my brothers 2011 KX450f was compared to my YZ and CR. My 500 is so much more plush, but I have yet to take it to a track. Maybe I’ll like it being stiff and rigid on the track. I know I’ll like the way the YZ handles and it’s power, it’s just the Honda looks so fucking good and would pair well next to my CR500. Maybe I’m overthink it and it’s not that big of a deal as I’m making it out to be from these magazine reviews. I’m not a fast track rider so it might not matter that much either way cause I’ll make it work like I did on my YZ. Only now I do plan on dialing in suspension for me cause it’s my money being spent and not my moms (I raced up til around 18).

I have not rode any other 450’s other than my kawi but I will say that it does have a very controlled powerband feel to it and the suspension is very predictable. I have had a blast learning to ride on it.

@@jpesicka492 I had a ttr125 when I was 13 but I’m 27 now lol. In February we had a 21’ KX 450 come into work on a repo. It had 6hrs on it and I got it for 3600 bucks. It was terrifying at first but now I’m a lot more comfortable on it

The Gasgas is the worst looking bike of the group with the cheap looking silver rims. The retro Honda is by far the best looking bike.

How can Gas Gas come from the same factory as Husqvarna and KTM ? I thought they were made in Spain / Sweden and Austria ? Whats going on here lol
I think they all sound terrible. The GasGas is somewhat tolerable. The Honda and GasGas are the best looking. Every one in the shootout would likely scare me and make me wonder why we need that much power on an MX track.

When I was young I used to get Dike Bike in the mail, it was my favorite magazine right up there with Popular Science. I'm going to get it again.
So technically the Yamaha should have won.. cause you said 3 things bad about the Kawasaki that hasn’t changed for awhile. Yet the Yamaha is completely new and you say how good it is but the balance which apparently you didn’t even try to run different settings to find.. 🤔also the Honda didn’t do well but to say it’s to much for most ppl is funny cause the bike is really mellow on how the motor comes on. It feels like a 250f power compared to Kawasaki or Yamaha which I rode. The Honda power is very disappointing for ppl that like power but good for ppl that don’t want much power. Suspension isn’t too bad but front end has the old Honda traits.
