I am aware of the KLR mistake. I once owned a KLX 650, and thats what came out. Also, I am aware of the pronunciation error of Bimota
KLX650 does sound sexy, tho. As someone who owns a KLR650 and KLX400 I can relate to the confusion.
There was a KLX 650!! Google it
The even bigger mistake you made was discounting the TW200? Have you not seen the Fortnine video "crossing canadas only dersert" ? "If the dual sport was made for going off road , the tdub was made for going off trail" Its north Americas last true "farm bike" its just built different
@@jaycottrell8260 No.
@@MrSketchyCharacter I have the KLX300 and would love a KLX450-500.
You should've talk about maintenance schedule, 1000km for most of these bikes, exept for the 690 enduro/701, 10,000km. Its an important information to make your choice. Fuel range too, you don't talk about it, for example, the CRF300 Rally has 400km of range, wich is more than 50% more range than all the other dual sport you mentioned. Should have talk about the spied KTM 390 Rally as well, maybe we'll see it in 2023.
yes I could have put that in there but the vid was kinda long Important info though
Arguably the most important factor outside of reliability.
Reliability, maintenance, weight, power
I have my fingers crossed for that 390 Rally like you wouldn't believe. If it turns out the way I hope it will, it's a 100% buy for me.
@@NeoRimeOnline What sort of specs are you anticipating?
This needs to be caveated. The KTM/Husky maintenance schedules are for racing conditions. If you're dual-sporting or ADV riding, you can stretch those intervals out considerably. RTWPaul just posted his maintenance schedule for his KTM 500 EXC, which is now over 50,000 miles on the original motor, and he changes his oil between 35-55 hours and anywhere between 2500 and 3500 miles. I do 30-50 hours myself on my 530 EXC and FE501S. Oh, and piston replacements at 100 hours or whatever are also only for racing conditions, my 530 is at 8300 miles/350 hours and my 501 is 9500 miles/450 hours, both on the stock pistons.
Great list and comprehensive discussion of so many options. Much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, great review. You did a great job covering most of the dual sports with great detail.
Thank you I appreciate that
I agree with you because he has mentioned the Chinese 🏍 bikes, which it shows he knows his stuff.
Great list. Like that you added the lesser known bikes out there. Keep rollin!
Thanks! 👍
Bought a DR650 early this year after owning a 550lb ADV and I can say that it was the best decision I have made so far in my motorcycling journey. And it is so much to modify it!
Just bought one last month as my first bike. I can't wait to start going on adventures
These ADV bike are too heavy
Congratulations and you are spot on! The DR650 is so much fun to modify to get it exactly how you want it. You are going to love it forever!
I actually went in the opposite direction. KLR650 to the Africa Twin. It's just a matter of what you want to do. It's better for long-distance/moto-camping and I can do any jeep trail that I normally do, but the trade off is it it definitely takes a little more effort and you have to pick your lines a little more carefully. To each his own! Happy riding!
✌️😎
I don’t know, I’m finding my dr a little dull.
It really depends how much off road riding you do and how fast you want to go off road. In most cases a dinosaur works fine, goes 50,000 miles or more without an engine rebuild and you don’t pay European parts prices…if you can even find the parts on the shelf.
Loved your video!! It made ideas move in my head! Thanks!!! ❤
Thank you for making this video. I love it. PS I finished all ads to support you 🤣
I have had the CRF250L, I am now on a XT250. Awesome trail bike, reliable, and frankly fun to ride like a hooligan around town! It will be my bike for many years to come.
Right on!
The xt will last decades
Ideal for shorter riders (inc ladies) who want to spend more time riding and less on maintenance.
I had both of those bikes.. The XT weighs 300 lbs... My new KTM 350 EXC-f weighs 250 lbs and beats the snot out of everything except my buddies 500 exc...lol The older I get the lighter I go...
XT250 is perfect girl’s or codger’s bike. Low seat, soft suspension and seat, perfect for going slow. Really well built. I got my wife one and it is terrific.
I just wish we Could get accessories for it
@@cocoscabana Like what - training wheels? I have one and it is great.
What an amazingly thorough list of dual sport motorcycles. This is the best video I've ever seen on the subject. I hope I was not one of the guys wearing out the comment section about how wonderful the DR650 is LOL! Great job on this video Man!!!
Thank you for the kind words
DR DOC 650!! Your DR650's are a work of art, quality builds to an already great bike. Cheers Amigo!
@@verbalwidget7267 Dave, your ability to build amazing bikes is only surpassed by your humility. Coming from you, this means a lot to me Brother!

Man, this is a very well done and well polished video. Thank you for this.
Thank you for watching it
Great Video! Covers so many bases!
Thank you
Thanks! Timely and useful summary.
Glad you enjoyed it!
52,000+ KM on my 2019 450L with no issues.
I’d mention that if you adjust your idle and throttle you won’t have flame outs and not need to spend additional monies on an ECU. Best parts availability for consumables bar none.
Thank you, I appreciate it !
Thank you
Still loving my 2018 KTM 500 EXC with 33,000 kms on it.. only opened engine to check / adjust valve clearances .. Great list.. loved the video !
52,000+ KM on my 2019 450L with no issues.
Don't sit through "x bikes of the year" videos very often but this one was worth it. Thanks for the effort to produce.
I appreciate that!
Commenting just to help the channel out. Love the content keep it up 👍
I really enjoy your video content. Thank you
Thank you for the kind words
Excellent video coupled with incredible research and presentation. At 6' 5 " i know first hand about a bike looking too small under me. But I have two that fit just right. An 07 KTM 950 Super Enduro and a 2017 KTM 1090R. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Nice one and loved the riding part as usual. You know 450RL all day for me and soon KTM for the single track. I need to hear that 2-stroke sound again, because mand does it bring back some great memories. I also think the Honda 300L is such a great bike for the price. My friend is about to pull the trigger on one. Merry Christmas and make 2023 count buddy....E
I think Im adding a Beta Xtrainer to the mix Hopefully we can ride in 2023
I would look into TM Racing bikes, much better build quality, your bike is built to your spec, they don't have WP suspension (this reason alone does it for me).
Great job with that list 👍
And yes the 690 Enduro-R has changed ! The seat is now orange !
dang I missed it lol
Wow! Great vid n solid effort here.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A superb effort. Outstanding.
Many thanks!
...enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
My dual sport is a plated KTM 250 xcw 2 stroke . Our last ride was 80 miles of single track connected with 15 miles of road and 2 track. So thats my definition.
Was riding my xt 550 for 13 years (with disc front brake) on a Greek island that had only 10 klm paved road really miss it.
I learnt a lot. Thank you.
Glad to hear that!
Dude i just wanna say i friggin love your channel/vids. Very informative, and very entertaining. Well done. Jason, South Africa (R1200GS rider).
Thank you I appreciate that
Good review! Have a new AJP PR7, great 'on road legal' enduro bike out the box with great adjustable suspension and pretty light at 165kg, ready to ride. Getting one can test your patience however!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Have a 2022 PR7 also. Great Bike
Yup the AJP PR7 is a awsome Motorbike! And you can do rallies with it!
Would love to ride one
The only dual-purpose bike I take seriously today is the 690 Enduro. And it really needs some modernizing for what they charge…. Lights and dash in particular.
Good vid Gooner.
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent coverage
My DR650 is not 17 years old! Just bought it new this year!
You will still have it 17 years from now
@@BornAGoon YUP!!!!!
It's about when then technology was last updated.
Mine is 2003 with literally 2 full turns on the ODO lost the mileage count already, same engine same all. And I’m not the most on the clock maintenance guy…
@@aronob A little maintenance and they just keep going. Great bikes! I love mine!
Fabuloso mil gracias. Éxitos

The Kawasaki 650 is a KLR not KLX. Iconic either letter
thanks for the vid
Thanks for watching
Good Video, enjoyed that. I'm forwarding it onto a friend 👍
Great content!
Thank you
Lots of great options from smaller manufactures, which was news to me. Cheers.
Yes looks to be a good year of Dual Sports
Just purchased a brand new DR650, and I love it.
Good choice!
Great video. Intelligent, good humour, qualified commentary and broad content. My 10 year old Husaberg FE 570 is a durable, flexible magic enduro that is road legal. Pity KTM stopped making them.
Thank you for the kind words
That AJP is real a beast ...love it💪
Thanks for watching
Solid list!!
Thank you
I just got a 23 beta 350rr race. Have 4 hours on it now and love it so far.
Great video, Keep an eye open for the Voge 300 rally
Thanks! Will do!
Jr Goon here again. I took yer advice and put the AIM ECU in my 450RL. I now love it even more. It is a great bike and the AIM made it so much better. Thanks Professor Goon for another great vid. Please buy a Beta you will be in love with there 2 strokes man they are good out tha box. I would like to see yer review of a Extrainer or the 200rr or 300rr. I’ll be out here waiting as I kinda think a Beta is gonna be your next bike, just a hunch.
I am going to a Beta demo day this Saturday
Nice video, I just felt I had to add... I LOVE MY DR650!!! 🙂🙂🙂
I quite serious off roading at 75 after 55 years of riding, including competition. I now have a Yamaha XT250 and just love it.
Good job on the video I miss my 1981 Honda xl 500 then xr350r then Dr 600 was thinking dr650 for last 20 years but just never happened and now not sure I'd have enuff Vaseline for the procycle screwing 😁
Noteworthy to mention is the AJP PR7 uses same engine as the SWM, the RED head Italian Husky 630 engine
Thank you
RE: SWM 500 - As a former 2007 Husky TE510 racer/owner I can tell you this SWM should be very reliable. I am seriously considering this over a new Husky 501.
Let me know if you buy one Im interested in the review
But SWM QC is not what Classic Husky was. Still the SWM is a great bike. The 500 passed most vehicles on the hwy. With a Sumo Kit carves asphalt
@@BornAGoon SWM has loaned us a couple of RE500R’s to race Vegas to Reno in 2022. Unfortunately, a rock ended our race before it started, so we are going to try again in 2023. I still have them both on my shop. They are excellent d/s bikes, especially for the price point. We are still refining the race bike. As you would expect, we had to revalue and respiring the suspension, that isn’t any different than what we did to the KTM we rode in 2020. If you are interested in hearing more, let me know. Regards, Dean Taylor.
@@oldproracing9360 yea I would love to hear more about it
Yeh. The 07 TE 250/450/510 and 610 are actually really great bikes. Prefer the carb. Nothing missing on them. Reliable and easier to work in than the ktms...08 changed things, closer to the SWM.... 07 the best!
good job. nice place you have to play in.
Yes, thanks
Technically (federally) the PR7 isn’t street legal in any State, it is in Europe. I have a plate on mine. As do many owners. They’re “off road only” according to distributor (and the government), so I depends on what State you live in. In that regard, in many states you can plate any dirtbike (even a 2T). 🤷
I thought it was sketchy but I had to put the bike on the list
in europe there is a legal loophole for very small manufacturers of vehicles. if fewer than x vehicles are manufactured per year, they may also be registered without emission and noise regulations.
(Article 41 in conjunction with Annex II, Part I Appendix 1 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858)
In AZ my PR 7 was street legal out of the box, I can't speak for other states. As for reliability, I got mine in April 2022, 5k rough miles later, Zero issues, tons of smiles.
Oi.... that was confusing, I thought I'd commented on this thread for a second... until I saw the word "federally" as I don't know exactly what that means lol. Good morning, Steve H.
@@steveh100 and i was just scratching my head thinking “I was hacked” lol.
Good video. Pretty sure it's the klr 650. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you
None of these bikes are available in my country, India. Neither are they ever gonna come to our shores. But I absolutely love the humour you add to your narration and that’s why I love watching your videos. 😄
Great work. Namaste from India 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching and the kind words
Question for you. If in India can you charge ebike battery at cafe or in park?
You can by new royal infild himalayan 450
@@MrRourk Well the EV charging system is gradually picking up and it’s certainly in a lot better shape now than before.
There are multiple charging stations available now within a few kilometres from where you are (but only within City Limits). There are apps too that being designed to find nearest charging stations based on location.
@@niteshsharma8493 INFILD 450 is yet to be launched buddy. Royal Enfield has many other products lined before the 450 Adventure.
i dont think the day will come when i give up my drz400sm with 21/18 wheels and countless mods. these bikes are dirt cheap to maintain cheap on insurance no payments indestructible i have almost 30k on the engine and still running like a champ with a bigbore top end waiting to go in.
Hard to get rid of that
I saw a video about that kove eraly today...man that bike catch my interest
damn.that bimoto is old school cagiva looking!..i ordered a 23 690...super pumped!
wow congrats on the 690
After 20.000 kmls on my Fantic Caballero Rally 500, I'm sure there are better bikes but I'm so happy with this real scrambler platform build on a dirt bike base, it's a blast to ride ⚡
Did you have any issues with your Fantic so far? I'm considering buying it (exactly the same - 500 rally) after riding for a week on Tenerife and gathering pros and cons :)
I wish this bike was available in the USA.
@@semenchikus hello 👋, not really all the issues I had, are my own fault, I race Bajas with that bike so I drop it a lot, be careful with the radiator is very exposed!
@@agustincuevae sounds awesome, thanks!
Glad to see the rally inspired mechanical unicorn bikes are starting to show up. I hope the KOVE inspires other manufacturers to get they're 💩 together and start making sub 10k rally bikes.
That is the Unicorn bike for me . ..
However God Bless the KLR and the Dr650
I have had the SWM rs500 for over a year now, phenomenal bike heaps of torque has been really reliable. good value
Awesome always wanted to hear from a true owner
Great video Goon...just one thing it's not a kkx650 it's a klr650.. I wish yamaha would step up and make a wr250r replacement..they could use the mto3 platform in a dual sport chassis!!! I mean come on no wants the lame xt250 when you can get a klx300 or honda 300l for around the same price
I call every Kawi a KX KLX or Ninja Im narrow minded
Great video man! The Bimota will be coming to the states, hopefully this spring from what I've heard from their Rep. I'm sure you didn't mention much of the Sherco sef line up as they aren't street legal off the showroom floor but in many states it's not hard to get any of the sef Shercos registered for road use.
There's not a lot out there for videos and such on them though so it's hard to say what people really think about them. I'm currently stuck on trying to decide between a Beta 500 rr-s the Sherco 500sef factory and the KTM 350 XC-F factory edition as any of these can be registered in South Carolina.
I have a KTM 300XCW and my wife is trying to talk me into buying the 2024 KTM 1290 Adventure R. I was a MX racer as a kid and quit when I was in the 250 expert class. Not into street riding but, owned a Honda VTX 1800. Will see how it goes. Nice bike when I went looking last weekend. 👍🤙
I have a 2021 WR450, factory plated and road legal here in Australia, I ride even ride mine to work on occasion. Absolutely amazing bike, rewards being super aggressive in the bush and it's an absolute hoot on the road but I think dual sporting it long distance is a stretch. I had a WR250R and I don't think it can be beat for a beaut all round do it all bike. Absolute tragedy Yamaha discontinued it.
How was the WR on single track? Do you have any flame out issues
I had the wr250f and that bugger didn’t like low revs and would stall surprisingly easy, but a great bike!
Congrats,Have the same model..you Aussies are lucky,..ill have to install Road kit..#Soloride_zx
@@BornAGoon All Wr450f 2017 onwards here in Australia have an easy WiFi mapping system, just have to borrow or buy a programmer about $300Aud and tune to your liking and eliminating flameouts 👌
I had a KLX300 and XT250 at the same time. The KLX300 was higher performing, but just a little bit. The XT250 was lighter, shorter, and a lot easier to work on. So, there are reasons for purchasing the XT250 over the Honda or Kawasaki if you're shopping in that market.
Thanks for sharing
3 inch lower seat height, 11inch ground clearance, bigger fuel tank, bullet proof reliability. For shorter riders the xt250 is a great choice. I ride mine with klx 300 riders and I have no problem keeping up.
I'm seriously considering the xt250 for a solo female trip south of the border...
I do wonder why they don’t make the XT350 anymore. Had one 30 years ago, it was a fun bike!
This trail looks like my area...I'm starting to itch to get started in the dual-sport universe.
embrace the itch
Nice to see an apparent uptick in dual sport interest amongst manufacturers. I’ve been a rider for 47 years, in every category and most available flavors. I’ve by far enjoyed dual sport the most. Still wouldn’t trust Chinese metallurgy with my life. Would like to see a US manufacturer show some ambition and jump into the dual sport mix. Maybe a resurrection of ATK. Born, good work.
Thanks for sharing and commenting
You say you wouldn't trust Chinese metallurgy with your life but i would be willing to bet you already are and have been for quite some time unless you are riding vintage 70's and or 80's machines exclusively. . I can't think of any brand of motorcycle that part or all of it does not originate in China. Where have you been for that last 20 years???
Or all? Exaggerate much?
@@bultacowally Alive and alert thank you. USA has SAE, Europe has DIN, Japan has JIS. These listed nations manufacturers are beholden to the above listed engineering standards. I’m unaware of such Chinese industrial standards. Chinese manufactured components will indeed be required to meet (I hope) foreign manufacturers metallurgical standings.
christini makes best duals
I really enjoyed this video. So many cool adventure bikes. The bad part is I have no idea who sells them, and if I did, they probably wouldnt have any or many in stock. They OTD price would be about 2K or more above MSRP. Also some would be hard to find parts for them or someone to work on them also. I would still like to see some of these in person.
You and me both!
Absolutely wonderful video.
Makes me miss my Suzuki 185, KLR 650, and DR 650...
I'm 62 and want another dual sport!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Honda 300 rally is the bike I'm hopefully going to get this next summer but even though it's a 300 it's the perfect rally bike in my opinion
I love the Grey!
GPX Moto has several models that come close to the premium brands at a more budget price. The FSE 250e air cooled 6 speed carburetor 4 stroke, the FSE300r liquid cooled 4 stroke EFI 6 speed and the FSE 450r liquid cooled 4 stroke EFI 6 speed. All models have full LED lighting, electric start and fully adjustable long travel suspension. All come with fully street legal equipment but are not legal in all states.
You solid Brah
thank you
Great video. It’s a good time to be a rider. There’s a bike for everyone. Is it bad that I would like one of each? Haha
Yep great time to be alive
Great to see some of the smaller companies such as Beta, SWM and Bimoto getting some spotlight. You should throw TM in there too. The have a dual sport that’s street legal in most states within the US, legal in Ca too. Those smaller brands have a smaller carbon footprint and get away with allot more than the larger brands when it comes to emissions. Big reason why Beta and Tm riders love their bikes and leave them mostly stock, but ktm and Honda owners are all buying exhausts and ecus to get them uncorked and running well.
Yea I left TM out because of no 50 state SL models but I should have tossed it in there real quick because its a nice bike I tried to get a loaner for a supermoto track day but we couldnt make it happen maybe next time
@@BornAGoon if you ever head to Adams in Riverside, reach out to Brian Rogers. He has the latest tm smx model and I’m sure he’d let you get some laps in on it.

2005 DR650...
Light weight! Good power. Super cheap to run. Reliable.
Not replacing it anytime soon

Well, yes, CFMOTO builds ktm 890 engine, also LONCIN (VOGE for Europe) builds BMW 850 cc engines. Please check out as well the VOGE 300 RALLY, which I own, worth to mention. A great budget dual sport bike, close to €5.000. Great off road handling fully equipped.
Hi 🙂 Greetings from Uk. I really carefully watched listened until the end. I'm gonna purchase my first ever motorcycle, a brand new ADV by Italian now Chinese owned refunded brand MOTO MORINI Model X-CAPE... I was wondering wether or not you would have been mentioning about it 🙃. Great to see videos like yours. Ending it, I genuinely thought of what you would say my custom electric bike looks like. 😄 I will be following the channel I watched other videos actually I'm already subscribed eheh!!! Really great job. Thank you
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Once a goon always a goon 🙏🏼💯
always a goon
Forgot the ccm 450 on your unicorn list :) please keep us updated on those motorcycles. I try to keep track of all those bikes to finally find the perfect dual sport but it's driving me nuts.
Will do!
The CCM 450 tragically doesn't exist anymore. Didn't meet emissions standards and they gave up on it. SUPPOSEDLY they're working on a 600cc replacement, but who knows if it'll see the light of day.
Omg I had a bw 350 they are fun! Wish I still had it
Good video, thank you. I'm a DR650 fanatic so since you at least mentioned the bike I'm going to have to find other uses for my tar & feather inventory. One feature you & others didn't mention is that some States require a steel gas tank. Regardless of the tank design, there must be protection between the gas & the road. I understand BMW F800 GS; which you didn't mention(so I can sell my inventory to a Beemer rider), I understand that model has a plastic gas tank but also has a formed steel shroud that protects the tank enough to be street legal. Finally: I'm disappointed that Suzuki is catabolizing it's 'Cycle division to pay the debt of it's failed Car venture. Also it needs to be said...a DR650 in grey is the worst color choice under the Sun. Off-Road & Dual-Sport Suzuki's are Yellow!!
Out of all the bike you mentionned, 2 bikes are on my wish list, the AJP PR7 and the Fantic. The AJP new is 12 800
Too big fingers... CHF 13 000 for tha AJP, the Fantic will be around 16 000. BIMOTA are top premium rare bike with price tag matching their rarity. I own a Honda 300 Rally, take it everywhere, does everything, except for breaking down...not like the CCM 450 GP, great bike when it runs, but filled with electrical gremlins.
So ride safe. Best wishes for 2023
The 98 XR 250 comes with the headlight and taillight. Back in 98 it cost an extra $250 to make it street legal. It also came with a baffle that came out with 3 bolts. So I say this incase someone is looking for a lighter and more powerful and obviously now in 2022 very cheap dual sport.
Very Nice! But I guess I'm keeping my old naked Tiger for another year! ;-)
I still have my Tiger lol
Still riding a 1969 Husqvarna 360 8sp Sportsman and it is tremendous.
I like that you did mention the KLX 650, even if it was by mistake. (A mistake by Kawasaki for abandoning its development...IMO (I own 3)) Also enjoyed the riding footage in my back yard.....Great channel, & hope to see you out there one of these days.
I'm 4 months into owning a Kove 525x. It's a 500cc ADV in the BMW GS vain (at least in looks). The same manufacturer produces a 500f model. Same engine and great styling but carries the Co-Love branding. I would have gone for the 500f but the huge "COLOVE" plastered down the side of the tank put paid to that. I'm super happy with my 525x. It does just what it says on the tin and has not missed a beat in the time I've had it. The only problem is that 450 Rally looks REAL tempting!! Ha Ha
Nice vid 👍
how do you like the Kove
@@BornAGoon Hi, thanks for asking.
It's great! The biggest sell is the value proposition, it's a lot of bike for the money! Otherwise it's a reasonably fair effort at a mid-range adv. I've had it up some mountain tracks and dropped it several times. So far, nothing has dropped off! Ha ha
I absolutely love my Zero DSR - all electric, no clutch/shifting lends to an ALTOGETHER different experience, balance, speed, awareness of surroundings-stealth. Gas is ancient tech-electric is superior and worth any other trade offs, planning.
Got my Dr 650 6,000 Mi on her she runs like a champ very reliable
The GasGas 700 Adv is available in America this year. We just received one at my local dealership.
sweet I like that look
@@BornAGoon its ugly, can`t see if i goes forward or rearward….no comfort
Currently have klx300 with many mods, would prefer bigger more powerful bike, but as you covered a great many choices mandatory feature's are six speed, fi and range of two hundred miles which eliminates most bikes as my klx has aftermarket bigger tank and gets 65mpg, truly miss my 1978 ds400 Yamaha 2 stroke with oil injection
Yep, I had the yellow 400 Yamaha. Great bike .
I have one also. I won't keep unless a legitimate fuel option is available. An extra .7 gallons for the IMS or rotopax don't work for me.
Riding buddy has 2020 SWM 500 and only complaints are melting radiator reserve bottle and big fuel consumption, doesn't even ride it hard
Test drove a AJP and all I can say is WOW
Nice Wish I could do the same
Nice video, At one time I thought about the Bimota, even phoned them 18 months ago, was told they will be in dealers within 6 months, and asked if I wanted to put a deposit down. I didn't. Since then nothing. I am in Europe and there are many duel Sports available in the states that are not available over here which is a pity. If I go to heaven and can take one bike with me that will send all KTM's to purgatory, I will have a bottle of 2 stroke oil attached to my Maico 700.
