The books, vs cannon, vs reality make gauging the strength of an energy shield so difficult. 15MJ= 15,000,000J. The 7.62x51 projectile fired from the MA5 variant assault rifles produces 3,560J. That means in this context(if I'm not mistaken) it would take 4,213 rounds from the MA5 to deplete the shield. I would cite Fall of Reach, but that would only reference the MkV, but why not: The shield on the Mk5 flickered a "hairbreadth" when 3 rounds of 7.62 hit the shield. Later on it says his shield dropped to half after taking hits from a "smattering of 50mm rounds". Well, it was a bit hard to find, but I found the weight and velocity of some 50mm round(the 50x330mm), and it comes to 819,200J. Lets call "three" a smattering of rounds. That is 2.4MJ to drop the shields to half, which, if I am correct, the MkV Shield should be rated at around 5MJ, or 1,400 rounds from an MA5, but three was a hairsbreadth? Is it logarithmic? Well, maybe, but then the three 50mm rounds would have killed him. Rated at 15MJ, getting hit with 5MJ, he would still have 10MJ left. The shield is not getting weaker, the weaker it gets, ie the more hits it takes, at least not from what we have played, seen, or read. *sigh*, okay back to the video.
While I don't have enough expertise to even really be called an amateur in this field, I do recall a later video pertaining to this topic brining up how the sparking of a failed shield is, "the other projectors trying to reform the shield while the disabled projector(s) recharges and reengages," which indicates to me that the structure isn't a singular formation but a series of formations wherein if a single part fails it all fails whereas - though don't quote me on this, I'm starting to lose myself now - an overwhelming, enclosing force would apply to all parts of the shield and affect it as one; therefore, if you localise fire on one specific part, it should fail appropriately. At least, from how I see it.
Could just be the writers not knowing how strong the shields and weapons are in relation to each other. Can't really blame them all that much, it's not like you'd expect them to research the specific strength of a shield and a bullet when they're just trying to make a story so they more than likely got their numbers from the games.
I honestly think "50mm" is a typo and should be 50.cal. Afterall Covenant firearms don't display antitank levels of firepower even as they're a threat to Mjolnir.
@@malcolmsaint it’s not a typo. The topic goes beyond just the games. What makes Covenant weapons so dangerous and effective is the fact that they are plasma. The high energy of the bolt makes quick work of the energy shields, and since heat is just energy, makes quick work of metallic, and organic materials. In essence, even a plasma pistol can be classified as an anti tank when compared against human small arms. As far as .50 cal is concerned, we see that caliber in the Warthog, and stationary turrets as 50bmg. The Magnum is also a .50 cal projectile, but uses an explosive round. The 50mm rounds from the book were from jet. Modern planes today use 20-25mm for fighters, and then you have the a-10 using the 30mm(mind you, there are MANY different 20-30mm rounds). So its not hard to imagine a jet 500 years in the future to sport a 50mm air-to-ground auto cannon.
I've always wanted these super detailed comprehensive breakdowns of Halo lore, it's what really makes me feel the world alive and glad to have found your channel!
Halo is criminally underrated in terms of lore with using grounded science. This type of depth puts it on par with Star Trek & 40K etc. Yet people see Halo as a random sci-fi shooter.
Well, we don't know the exact state of the Mark VI's systems (or Chief's physical health) after those incidents, there isn't much dialogue about it. At the beginning of Halo 2 the Master GySgt mentions to him a hint at the state of MJOLNIR's systems after his two days' time on the first Halo ring: "The plating was about to fail, there's viscosity throughout the gel layer. Optics, totally fried. And let's not even talk about the power supply." MJOLNIR is definitely tough as an overall combat system, but I'm sure the suits' subsystems were compromised in some way not expounded upon. We know that Fred's terminal velocity free-fall in Halo: First Strike killed 4 Spartan IIs in MJOLNIR Mark V, immobilized one, and gave several others broken bones and contusions. Fred himself survived with a blown hydrostatic gel seal and damaged shield generators.
@@BattlesuitExcalibur 1. Operation First Strike came between Halo: CE and Halo 2 during which Chief was still wearing Mk. V 2. Gunny was commenting on Chief's Mk. V, not his new Mk. VI 3. Mk. What I'm saying is that if this were out of operational capacity for the Mk. VI Chief would be dead or severely incapacitated. Permanently.
@@angus57720 I wasn't contesting any of that.... However in response to number 4, there is no "fighting seemingly unhindered". It is simply not mentioned or expounded upon in any way. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Realistically the Chief perhaps got lucky and landed under circumstances that happened to not completely obliterate the suit. People have survived falling at terminal velocity under very special circumstances, such as falling on snow or in a certain posture that spread the impact forces, reducing them to nonlethal levels. There is no possible way that the designers could have anticipated every possible scenario the suit would find itself in, that is not only an unreasonable expectation of the engineers, the suit would probably haave ended up looking like a fucking ODST drop pod if it was designed to survive atmospheric insertion.
@@angus57720 John was more tired than any human being can possibly be and fought normally in the 1st part of first strike up until he fought the elite in hand to hand where his fatigue finally showed. Kelly was fighting with a collapsed lung and bruised liver like it was normal. Im sure chief and other spartans do crazy shit like that all the time because of adrenaline.

You'd make a brilliant *bio/metallurgical/mechanical/other type engineer (*assuming you aren't one of these already). Another shout out for Eck for showing us this channel. Such an awesome time sink.
There are so many features and capabilities in the suit and yet it has such a low profile. The Bungie version at least looks almost like it's just football pads-thick. The 343 versions are a lot thicker, but I still wonder how they pack all of that stuff into that suit. Especially into the skin-suit.
Installation00 I'm curious about biofoam. If I remember correctly there has been attempts at using foam for medical purposes, but can't because of something to do with it spreading through a person's blood vessels. Shouldn't biofoam have the same problems?
My question is this: how does the Chief's armor change appearance so radically during the time between Halo 3 and Halo 4? As far as I'm concerned the "nanites" excuse given by 343i is a load of bunk. Cortana mentions that she rewrote/upgraded the suit's firmware while the Chief was on ice, but firmware is permanent software programmed into a read-only memory, rewriting a software package wouldn't change the external plating. I honestly prefer the "classic" Mark IV from Halo 2 and 3, in my subjective opinion the Halo 4 suit looks just plain bad, almost like it was cobbled together from spare parts.
If you take 343i and their Explanation as canon, then it was upgraded with nanomachines. Chiefs Mark-VI featured testbed prototypes of innovations meant for the Mark-VII. The nanomachines would have been programmed by Cortana to breakdown non essential or tertiary components of his suit and reassemble the resources into the new suit we see him wearing in Halo 4. That explains why certain aspects of Chiefs suit is "missing" or seem like there are areas missing. His new suit IS cobbled together out of spare parts.
@@TruePacifist201 absolutely agree. It is the more logical armor platform. But in the great scheme of things, what 343i say is canon, IS canon. If thats what they say happened, then thats what happened, no matter if we agree with it or not.
This video was so excellent I had to look at it two times the details of the breakdown and information perfect excellent fabulous wonderful job I appreciate the hard work you put into this video
15 megajoules seems a bit much for the shields considering that a sniper rifle round a 14.5 mm puts out 65000 joules and it takes a million joules to equal a megajoule that rounds out to about 231 sniper rifle rounds to drop the shields if they're using a similar 14 mm round as the ones we use today
Spartans are essentially immune to small arms fire up to .50 caliber and that's without the shields. Covenant plasma weapons are so ridiculously powerful that their close passing/near impacts cause 2-3rd degree burns, amputate limbs through armor and collapse the armor playing of MJOLNIR in 2-3 impacts. Guns harm you in gameplay because then it's no fun otherwise. Also it's probably not it's absolute stopping power. I'd imagine a lot of that energy output is just maintaining the integrity of the field let alone also resisting kinetic and heat energy.
While it might have 15 Megajouls of power to drive the shields, the "deflection / absorption efficiency" of the shield in actual use might not be 100% so depending on the material composition of the round, velocity, and mass the shield might use a disproportionately large amount of energy for some weapons
Found your channel some time ago with the Mark VII and forgot to subscribe then, but thanks to Eckhart, found your channel again! Super detailed vids about Spartans that pretty much, in my opinion, needs to become required viewing material for ALL new 343 employees, not to mention added to the Halo canon! Keep it up!
I thought I loved halo before I found your channel. You have made me love something I honestly didn't think I could love any more! Thank you for all of your hard work! Been binging your videos for a few days now :P! Also, this maybe difficult to answer but how much do you think chiefs armour costs in universe?
Your channel is amazing!! I love it and I will become one of your Patron members. Can you please do a segment on Spartan Locke's armor? His armor seems to be unique among Mjolnir armor.
On the field, Spartans eat energy bars, which are fully absorbed into the bloodstream, thus no solid waste. As stated, the urine is collected and recycled into drinking water.
It's funny that our shields are based on jackal shield guards, no wonder our shits so strong. I remember reading that and going, "yeah that checks out."
Sadly Space Fantacy like Starwars can't be taken apart to the same degree as Halo because it departs much further from reality, using a lot more "rule of cool" instead of realistic physics and materials science. Books showing cutaway of the tech and ships are cool but mostly demonstrate how far removed from real they are. Halo isn't innocent of this either, but it does so far less, and takes ques from real technologies or near-future tech that can theoretically exist, it's not quite a full hard-scifi but it's close. And then there it Star Trek, fun but uses almost as much space-magic as Starwars, and you'd never get me near a Anti-matter fueled warp drive or Transporter cause that's just a fast way to get atomized before you can say "oops"
I hate to be a bother. but i am looking for the resource that states that the Spartan's Energy shields are technically more efficient and thus more superior to their Sanghelli counterparts. I tried to search on the wiki but found it lacked that information anywhere. I remember that the reason was because the jackal gauntlet and the sanghelli shield emitters work on different principles and the reason the UNSC is more efficient is because it uses less energy due to being styled after the jackal gauntlet's more refined emitter tech. or something like that. I just can't seem to find where i read that while elite shields can take more hits. its because they are pouring far more energy into the field and wanna have a primary source for it.
@installation00.... you say the suit can only have 45min of sealed air.. in many of the novels it is mentioned that mjolnir has a 90min air supply when sealed.
Cool video, but you should've done separate videos for the standard mk 6 and the "upgraded" suit cuz it's kinda confusing which has what features. Like does the original version also have thrusters?
Wait, since Mjolnir can only be removed with specialist tools, how would a Spartan (for lack of a better word) bail from their suit if it took enough damage/wear and tear that continued wearing of it would hinder the mission like if they needed to go into a body of water but there was an irreparable hole that compromised the airtight nature of the suit.
Given the kind of conditions required to make Mjolnir Mark VI fail, it's likely the Spartan is not in any condition to fight in most instances anyway, so they would either be moved by allied Spartans, or set to Failsafe-Self-Destruct to prevent capture of the tech therein
i don't know if this is mentioned in one of the other breakdowns. but the suit does have waste recycling right? or at the least something to prevent the spartan from pissing themself right?
What are you talking about? The new design is clearly superior to the old one. The old one feels plasticky and out-of-touch, doesn't really give the vibes of military hardware.
Mk IV, Mk V, and MK VI are, as far as I'm concerned, the visual and Performance benchmarks by which all other Power Armor systems are judged, and many are found wanting
Master Chief vs the Avengers. I believe, Captain America might be able to put up a decent fight, or at least survive for a couple minutes, against Chief when he is not in his armor. But, when he is in armor, Chief would crush his head inside out with one punch. No contest at all. The only people who could beat Chief would be Hulk and Thor. Everyone else is just like paper trying to fight a hurricane. Im just talking about main avengers. Idk about Scarlett Witch or Vision. Scarlett Witch is pretty insane but she is a glass cannon. Vision also has an exploitable weakness which I believe Cortana could help Chief with so he could get the W. Thanos could also beat Chief. Chief is a badass, but he isnt quite that badass lol. Anyone else would most likely lose, unless Black Panther could make some insane vibranium armor and a badass vibranium weapon that is capable of penetrating Chiefs armor and shield and if he is fast enough to even get a hit on Chief he "might" have a chance. I just cant honestly say that anyone else would survive a fight with Master Chief. Talking about MCU btw. If you know someone who could take Chief out, let me know.
Imagine the FPS Master Chief can get on that visor LOL 600 frames per second gaming all day! 🤣 I wonder if Cortana is able to see Master Chiefs thoughts when she's got her back towards him and he's looking at her ass 🤪🤣
So does anyone know how long master chief was floating in space waiting for rescue at the end of Halo 4? Based on the specs it couldnt have been over 45 mins right? What about with Halo Infinites trailer, couldnt have been that long right?
Well apparently the Gen 3 armor from the trailer can put its user into emergency stasis, so maybe the new armor can preserve its user for much longer than the rebreathers allow (which I think is ninety minutes).
Crystalline structures have cleavage which are weak points especially on a hard material like that if anything hits with significant enough Force along the axis of the cleavage it'll split the plate right in half
Might be worth watching another one of my videos about Chiefs armor called Master Chiefs Mark-VII. Link is below. ua-cam.com/video/4tEGDSxix5I/v-deo.html
My headcanon is that Chief wore the Mjolnir shown on 4:40 rather than the one shown in H2A cutscenes and then Cortana rewrote the suit to the iteration of Halo 4.
at reaction speeds as high as that master chief can't really change his mind can he. if he decides to kill someone infront of him by the time he decides not to the person infront of him that person would've been killed multiple times
Remember, the chip in his head reads his toughts before they can even be fully developed, so if he does decide not to, the suit might just stop his movement, barely scraping said person.
@@theyoboygamer3754 where is that stated?how can a chip read something that isn't there to begin with. sure one could say it can guess based on past actions and preferences like dodge/escape without thinking basically mind muscle connection. but I'd like to think the killing of someone would require more thought then a dodge reflex
If im correct, apparently neurons in your nevous system generate a tiny spike in energy. If I am right on this, the chip detects this, copies the pattern sent from the neuron, and instead of that signal going to the brain, it translates to the suit
Why you gotta show the chief vs Locke fight? Thats blasphemy sir! Locke should have instantly been marked, ain't no way a brand new spartan can overpower the experienced and virtually invincible chief, 343 just thought their version of chief was a suitable replacement which in itself is the worst blasphemy

Thank you again!!! I really really hope 343 uses this detailed breakdown to improve what they have.
Keep it up!
Still enjoy these breakdown videos. Awesome work. Hope you do a full breakdown of Gen3 when more info is released.
The ending is quite good
“The outer layer is advanced titanium you won’t even dent it.”
paramount Halo
Where did the footage of Maria doing reentry come from? Or for that matter much of the footage when discussing the thruster pack?
Id absolutely love to be augmented as a SPARTAN II.The strength and speed, and other abilities. So cool.
But how does he go to the bathroom... Lol fantastic job man. Very happy I found your channel
On the field, Spartans eat energy bars, which are fully absorbed into the bloodstream, thus no solid waste. As stated, the urine is collected and recycled into drinking water.
20:36 chiefs face on the data pad
Great work and thank you 🙏

In Halo 2 Legendary difficulty: "HA, MY ASS!"
Those shields are paper in any difficulty and yet “rEsiLIeNt”
It's funny that our shields are based on jackal shield guards, no wonder our shits so strong. I remember reading that and going, "yeah that checks out."
If only I had these breakdowns for Star Wars as well I would be in heaven lol
Love to know about mjolnir Anubis Variant
I know that this was done three years ago but do you by chance have a text document with all of this information in it?
@installation00.... you say the suit can only have 45min of sealed air.. in many of the novels it is mentioned that mjolnir has a 90min air supply when sealed.
Cool video, but you should've done separate videos for the standard mk 6 and the "upgraded" suit cuz it's kinda confusing which has what features. Like does the original version also have thrusters?
So that’s what those little lights all over the armor are for
Wait, since Mjolnir can only be removed with specialist tools, how would a Spartan (for lack of a better word) bail from their suit if it took enough damage/wear and tear that continued wearing of it would hinder the mission like if they needed to go into a body of water but there was an irreparable hole that compromised the airtight nature of the suit.
I think at a pinch a SPARTAN II would be strong enough to take off the suit's components. Maybe. Interesting question.
Given the kind of conditions required to make Mjolnir Mark VI fail, it's likely the Spartan is not in any condition to fight in most instances anyway, so they would either be moved by allied Spartans, or set to Failsafe-Self-Destruct to prevent capture of the tech therein
More than likely if a Spartan’s suit is compromised and/or inoperable they are essentially just dead. It’s a coffin that can only be taken off at home
When a Spartan is about to die and needs to follow Cole Protocol they simply meltdown their fusion reactor and blow up.
Awesome
It sure would be nice if Showtime used this UA-camr for any possible narration in the Halo series.
Love it
love you content
The music for the 1st 2 mins. What halo soundtrack does it come from?
i don't know if this is mentioned in one of the other breakdowns. but the suit does have waste recycling right? or at the least something to prevent the spartan from pissing themself right?
21:56
7:20 anyone know the OST? That's the one I always had a hard time finding or refinding.
RaginDXDemon it's from the original combat evolved soundtrack. Forget the track name but it's there.
How do drones/buggers deploy?
No please don’t use the 343 designs, they look like power ranger suits. I wanna see the big badass OG MKVI
What are you talking about? The new design is clearly superior to the old one. The old one feels plasticky and out-of-touch, doesn't really give the vibes of military hardware.
Halo 4 mark VI looks cooler in my opinion
Mk IV, Mk V, and MK VI are, as far as I'm concerned, the visual and Performance benchmarks by which all other Power Armor systems are judged, and many are found wanting
Why is this so quiet? i can't hear what he's saying half the time.
Seems fine for me. Perhaps it's your speakers?
If the shield provides full body coverage how does it allow for air intake?
Background music is a bit load in some instances can nearly here the narrator
But how does he use the restroom?
I believe that there's a filtration system
you litterally uploaded the same video for each of the armor breakdowns
Us army: *Taking notes*
Can’t wait for the CIA to kidnap 6 year olds and turn them Into super soldiers
Could you do the Marine armor
Imagine the FPS Master Chief can get on that visor LOL 600 frames per second gaming all day! 🤣 I wonder if Cortana is able to see Master Chiefs thoughts when she's got her back towards him and he's looking at her ass 🤪🤣
Why does the reactor thing need to be radiation proof? Fission cause radiation not fusion...will radiation damage the micro fusion reactor?
117, 000 views. Nice!
Can anyone tell me what music he's using at 1:41 I think this is Halo 1 it has the mystery vibe going on.
I thought the mark 5’s energy shields were rated at 15 megajoules.
Please god Elon well all want you to pool some billionaires together and just try to make this Godamn suit.
how does a spartan evacuate the bladder and bowels?
Yeah how?
Liquid nutrition to avoid solid waste, and liquid recycling systems to deal with the liquid waste
What is that song in the intro up to ~2:10?
Offset - Clout
8:43
thicc AF
THICC
What music are you using around 1:00?
Darude Sandstorm
Where did the 15 megajoule figure come from?
I get a feeling 14.9 of that is just maintaining full shield capacity
Why does the mark 6 armor change when it comes to halo 4-5
Might be worth watching another one of my videos about Chiefs armor called Master Chiefs Mark-VII. Link is below.
ua-cam.com/video/4tEGDSxix5I/v-deo.html
Nanomachines, son
So where is mine?
My headcanon is that Chief wore the Mjolnir shown on 4:40 rather than the one shown in H2A cutscenes and then Cortana rewrote the suit to the iteration of Halo 4.
Music was too loud, difficult to hear you
at reaction speeds as high as that master chief can't really change his mind can he. if he decides to kill someone infront of him by the time he decides not to the person infront of him that person would've been killed multiple times
time to binge the channel from the verying beginning
That might be how
The amount of redundant information in this video from the mk 4 and 5 video made my brain turn off
Mk 7 gen 1 has mk 5 b base change my mind
oh that's why you keep saying torch its because you speak limey okay flashlight got it I've been soo confused.
Sign me up
Why you gotta show the chief vs Locke fight? Thats blasphemy sir! Locke should have instantly been marked, ain't no way a brand new spartan can overpower the experienced and virtually invincible chief, 343 just thought their version of chief was a suitable replacement which in itself is the worst blasphemy
The helmet is the least impressive thing no infrared ultraviolet nothing you would think they would give them better visual access
I fail to see the use of ultra-violet for a Spartan, and Infrared was given to the Gen-3 (and maybe 2?) helmets I'm pretty sure
Ever developed
I hate his 343 design
Halo 4s “mark vi” is a joke
The only problem with your videos that you need to speak a little louder.
Turn your volume up?
I love how the closed caption option says "white scum" and yet flawless pronounces everything to a t. UA-cam at it again with social engineering.
U wot
Stolen covenant tech
Been going back and listening to all of your videos while at work and i cannot thank you enough for allowing me to step away from my mental health crisis and into the halo universe on a daily basis. Ive been re-reading the books and binging halo infinite multiplayer non-stop and your in depth lore analysis and humour is just such a blessing, man. I know im leaving this comment on a 4 year old video but that should prove I've been absolutely devouring your back catalogue lmao. Never stop what you're doing. You make the pain of being alive not so bad. At ease, Spartan. 🫡
