spaced94 They aren’t peacetime troops, they’re decorated veterans. Some of them were characters in Halo 3 ODST. They have been in the thick of it since then cleaning up Covenant remnants, Forerunner technology, and Flood sightings. The problem is that the writers treat them as generic grunts rather than the elite veterans they should be to differentiate them from the 2s and 3s.

... Isn't the middle child suppose to be the one that gets upity? The oldest is the one that the parents are paranoid over doing something wrong with. The youngest is doted on to make sure they have the same advantages of the first two. The middle is expected to be better then the first but always in the shadow of the first and never given the same attention as the third and as such feels left out and overlooked. At least that is how I always thought of it.

When Locke says “you’re not the only one here because of him”. I think he’s referring to the fact many soldiers chose to become Spartan IV’s because of the Chief. They looked up to him as a hero. I think she wants them to just shut up and do their damn jobs. To just focus and do what their training tells them and to follow orders. Like how we see tactical incompetence among some of the IVs. Sure, it's only a tiny few. But, that's a tiny few among people who were already elite and highly veteran soldiers even before receiving four years of training as Spartans. By then, there is absolutely no excuse for _any_ tactical mistakes or disobedience from any of them barring enemy action or great necessity. Thorn is mostly good in this way. He follows his training, has good tactical sense and awareness, and obeys his orders without bitching about not liking them.

There is this quote from a fanfic about the helmets which I like as it shows its importance.
"Your helmet is a masterpiece of UNSC military technology. Motion tracker, VISR tech, vision modes and HUD for offensive capabilities, while defensively, it is heavily armored, projects the cranial energy shields, and protects you from radiation, vacuum, chemical, and biological attacks. None of which will help you if you do not have it on. Which the Prometheans took advantage of. As would any competent enemy."

I like the idea of less professional Spartans. It makes up for their numbers, and their incompetence means that humanity still needs the Chief. It shows that the IVs aren't a replacement for the previous gens. They're a bandage made try and ethically and cheaply fill the void left after Reach. They're meant to be incompetent. They're not meant to be better than the previous gens. They're meant to be cheaper, and to boost morale among civilians and other military elements. They exist to fail so Chief can look better.

    • @ashishshenoy3778

yes maybe this makes sense for hyping Chief up but it makes no sense to me that a military branch is gonna spend big money on weapons (spartans) that are not fully lethal and reliable and long lasting. When you send soldiers and weapons systems to the battlefield, you cant afford to have any of them be incompetent, you know?
It would sit with me better if the IVs were designed to fulfill a different role than IIs, one that doesn't require them to be enhanced emotionless supersoldiers taking on impossible possibly suicidal and species-saving missions. That's probably what you were getting at, but i dont like the idea that IVs were or should be designed to "fail". If the IV's were indeed designed to replace (lore-wise) the IIs, then the IVs should definitely not be written as incompetent.

I agree, maybe they should adjust the psychological evaluation of Spartan IV program candidates, but otherwise it might be better choice over older versions. It's similar to difference between Sherman and Tiger tanks. Sure tiger is a better tank, but it's way too difficult to manufacture where as you can quite easily make thousands of shermans to replace your losses, and they are still capable of going against tigers when used properly. Spartan IV's are simply better choice for UNSC long term. Of course ideally they should also have II's the III's available when the situation calls for it.

As I am listening to the audiobook "The Rubicon Protocol", I can assure you the depiction of the Spartan IVs is IMMENSELY better in that book. Exactly what you might imagine Spartain IVs to be like; proud, calm, collected warriors that represent the best of the UNSC, but as they grew up human, they are immensely better psychologically capable of relating to and bonding with regular soldiers. While not the unreal legends of Blue team and the spartan 2s, they are still viewed by their peers as demigods, and they bring hope and courage to the soldiers they meet. They are capable of more than any other soldiers, and they are above all else determined to win. The Master Chief is even noted for saying that while the Spartan IVs don't have training quite on par with the spartan IIs, they more than make up for it with tenacity, technology, and comradery. It is clear in the book that they are truly spartans of the future. I wish we could have seen them. Many of the dead spartans in Infinite are featured in the book.

Peak physical, smart, good soldiers, but loud, braggerts, arrogant. They never got selected. The silent, cautious, polite ones that may not have been greek gods, or the best shot, didn't come back to our unit.". That really seems to be the distinction between the Spartans.

For the record, I work with a lot of “regular” soldiers (grunts, MPs, engineers) and SF guys (SEAL, DOE, Delta) in my line of work. Though I rather not say what I do in an open forum, I can agree that the “real world” soldier may act like the Spartan 4’s. But I can’t say the same about the SF (Spec Force) guys. They’re one of the most humble and most straight forward guys you’ll ever meet. Kind of guys you would want to have a beer with.
That said, I do have respect for all branches of the military but there are the few that I respect above others. I’m not sure what it is about these SF guys, but they have this aura about them... they don’t need to be loud to be heard, don’t need praises, have a switch on there brain to “turn off/on” when they need to and just plain do their best to be under the radar.
When it comes down to it, Halo’s“original” Spartans weren’t designed only from the Spartans of the past, but rather and equally with the real world heroes (Special Forces) of today as well.

Orion-IIs would seem the most fitting to me. As the original Orion Project volunteers were also consenting adults and the research and breakthroughs from that project was the basis for the Spartan Program which was why they were called Spartan-IIs and IIIs as a respectful nod toward them.
SO, sense the IVs are also consenting adults and the augmentation technology is originally derived from the Orion Project, Orion-IIs or Orion-IVs makes the most sense.

I like it too. Orion-IVs sounds best because it acknowledges the level of technological development while still recognizing the difference. I get that the UNSC wanted to exploit the PR-boost that came from the Spartan-name but you can also justify reverting to Orion with military respect. According to Mah Boi Zack from the Comics Matter, one of the most striking qualities of U.S. Marines he met was humility. When they were tasked with cleaning up, the buck wasn't passed to the least of the team but instead they all did it together to efficiently finish their duties ASAP and without any rank-pulling shenanigans because at their level of performance they all become intricately familiar with their ultimate fragility as human beings. So that writing would be true to life.

It does sound good but that would mean ONI would have to admit that THEY were the ones that technically started the human experiment program that Halsey later adapted into the Spartan 2 & 3 program, which they would never admit because they want to use Halsey as their scapegoat hence the reason for the name change in the first place lol. But it would make more sense since the Spartan program is Halsey’s and the Orion program is Oni and I’m pretty sure Halsey had nothing to do with spartan 4’s

Actually while the Orion project was the grandfather of the Spartan II and III projects the Spartan II's and III's were called such as a nod to the original ancient Spartans, due to the fact that they were taken at a young age to begin training and indoctrination. That was even explained in the books. So technically you would call the IV's Orion II's not Orion IV's.

A mission with a 0% survival ratio and as such no plan for extraction. The second class of 300 was better but 90% still died only after a few missions. The 3s had a special detachment called 'headhunter' made up of 3s that survived 2 such missions and as such were given more care... if only by a small margin. The 3rd class was made up of ?315? but most of them were deployed off planet at the beginning of their book with only a few dozen on their training world of Onyx and they are the primary ones talked about.
It's not that more 4s have died then 3s, its just that when it was that Bungy did different things with them and 343 only seems to only care about the games and generality then the detail work.
That is not an excuse, Del Rio was stated in the books to be as much a political appontie to command in UNSC Infinity as anything else and he only treated the 4s in the same manner as the ODST. And the 4s act it. The 4s are, to use the trope, an average size fish in a small pond while the 2s were made to last and the 3s were to die in a blaze of glory.

Like in the long sword after halo ce when he takes it off at the end of the game. Also in the books when chief observed the behavior he’d note that wasn’t acceptable. In ghosts of onyx it mentions the IIIs had a bad habit of taking their helmets off when they weren’t supposed too. Like someone else mentioned Jorge was gonna unalive himself so what did it matter

But you're right Master Chief is much more mature than the newer spartans however there is a lot to mention. Master Chief used to be really childish and sometimes still is. Remember him scaring a grunt by saying "boo" he had no reason to do that other than to entertain himself. He also does what he wants even if it's against orders and you can say well he does what he wants because it is what should be done or because it's the smarter move, well it's not. Dr. Halsey said it herself Chief isn't the smartest spartan, the strongest spartan, or the fastest but he is the luckiest spartan. I would honestly just chalk it up to him being immature when he was younger, and obviously the newer spartans are younger so they are going through the same immaturity phase, but has matured much more because he has had the most time to. Even Spartan 2s of halo wars were immature. If you are fighting wars all the time usually the best way to keep morale up is to have a sense of humor. That being said you are right chief is definitely best with his behaviors and I think they probably made spartan 4s just because they wanted more super soldiers and didn't do the proper screening or training. Because they’d taken the butte back and established it as alpha base, or a safe zone.
I remember chief getting tossed from the gravemind right into a hot zone with the prophet and brutes all in a closed room then him landing in front of a grunt, which yea he said boo and scared him. Maybe he should have been more tactical…. Interesting example I guess… As far as chief doing what he wants it’s because he has tactical command once he hits the ground. As long as the mission assigned gets completed, once chief hits the ground he’s in charge of everything and everyone unless he runs into an officer in charge of another squad. Which means he does what he wants because that’s the point of his rank….
I’ll give you the comment about those wash outs that are red team in halo wars I guess? As far as chief being the “best behaved” it’s not because he wants to. He’s squad commander of all the spartan 2s. He was taught to not join in,to separate himself and no show emotion so as to maintain respect among his “subordinates”. Really behavioral examples you’re mentioning Really have nothing to do with the simple disciplines of combat that had been beat into all of their heads in a very brutal fashion. The statis pods that contained team Katana was said to be able to survive any form of destruction because it didn't exist on the same spatial axis. The explosion would just phase through the target. Now I know it's unlikely that Kurt survived by jumping into one, but I don't see why they would bring up his connection to Forerunner tech and symbols that he went through during his final stand. He was written to feel a connection to the shield world and had an instinctual understanding of their writing. Like he knew what was written in the ancient Forerunner facility but at the same didn't understand a word. Why do that and kill hm a few hours later?

Look at Locke for example, he was a hitman for ONI, so he’s serious, but he isn’t bland and boring like chief. Buck was an ODST so he knows how to be professional, but he uses his humor to make situations less tense and help him keep calm. Any psychologist can tell you humor in tense situations can actually be helpful.
The spartan IV’s are supposed to be inferior to previous generations. It’s the whole reason Halsey was branded a criminal. She kidnapped kids and turned them into soldiers, making them fight each other and only the strongest the soldiers survived. It created superior soldiers, (which were originally made to combat terrorists and rebellion) but it robbed families of their real children, and these kidnapped kids were brainwashed into loving Halsey and viewing her as a mother.

It's a very good analysis of the spartan generations. If the game developers were looking at making the Spartans more in line with spec ops units, they might want to look at the evolution of current units found around the world and seeing how they have evolved over time, the training regiments tactics ect. I imagine first Gen special forces like the seals back in the 60s and 70s had their own growing pains compared to how they are now. Both in training, physiological make up, tactics and other factors. Good job. Keep up the good work 💪

Marines in Halo are very happy-go-lucky, so it doesn't really surprise me how careless they are. Hopefully we see how this gets shaped in Infinity, I think a galactic catastrophe would make the 4s respect their job more.
