I playd in the orchestra when Kogan was in Norway for the first time,I think it was 1955/56. I am lucy to have had the possibility listen to Kogan and Oistrack wen they arrived to Norway first time. Brynjar Hoff
Kogan used to lean backwards a lot when he played, often with the violin pointed slightly upwards! Usually it’s the opposite. Sometimes some of us lean forward when going to a high position. Elman did that a lot and so did Milstein.
This peformance is simply super human ! Kogan shows to play the Shostakovich incredible concerto for violin ! FANTASTIC ! Bravo for Svetlanov and the legendary S.O of fomer USSR !!!! Uncomprable !
Yikes, I've only got the first and the fourth movement down and its been a year....forgot how difficult the second movement is - but listening to this everyday is what motivates me to get up and practice! Kogan is a beast, especially the Scherzo wow wow wow
This is so beatiful played, soring sound clippes away all doubt, that belief in the tone is mesmerizing. This is one of the most truly moving plays of this piece, i have heard. Esoteric force of nature
Usually don't like this concerto, it's so much weighed under with depression. But not In Leonid Kogan's hands with Svetlanov. Tremendously invigorating and deeply felt at the same time. Thank you to these great artists!
Epic time produced Shostakovich, Kogan, Oystrach. There was need, demand for them. As to conditions, well genius will create conditions, will find the way to manifest, to express itself, and a form to define itself.
Yes sadly Oistrakh died a couple years before this, leaving Kogan to pick up the gauntlet. Which he did so well but Oistrakh's performances of this piece were special. It's sad to watch this, knowing that Kogan would be gone so few years later in 1982.
The typical view of the Russian intelligentsia on Russia is as follows: "We are like pearl grains accidentally caught in this manure. Oh, how we SUFFER because we were born and raised here!" All that is also in Shostakovich's music - that's why the intelligentsia adores his 'serious', sincere works.
This piece is MUCH more manageable in terms of the left hand than it sounds. The difficulty is endurance and sustaining intensity. I would argue Beethoven and Sibelius are more difficult.
A really brilliant performance, however I do not like Kogans interpretation of the passacalia - too much force and virtuosity "touch" and not enough of the grief and despair. But that's just my personal taste and it is one of the best interpretations I know
Unbelievable! Kogan was truly one of the greats. If he had managed to defect to the west he may have been greater still. The truth is that he was a prisoner of that vile soviet union
However vile the soviet union was (and it was indeed vile) it has nothing compared to the the vile west in that front! You are also wrong on the assumption that he would have become a better player in the west since back then the soviets produced the best players and he had all he needed there.
Don't see much "interpretation" going on here. He plays the notes, nothing more. He plays as if the orchestra doesn't exist (doesn't partner with them). Lyrical qualities of the score are missed. Grade C+.

Agree
slightly more labored than his older performances (such as one with kondrashin) but still very good

The Kogan's sound is like a trombom, very strong and the same time beautiful.
The third movement always brings me to tears. Amazing.
It's the best 3rd. mov. of anything.
@@ytnelsongn Yes...although Shostakovich Symphony #5 3rd movement is on a par I think.
Titanic talents of Shostakovich and Leonid Kogan have met to create this stunning masterpiece! Many thanks, ADGO, for downloading it.
Hallucinant..!!!!
Incroyable..!!!
This a masterful rendition of this masterpiece. Unforgettable.

c'est vrai

If you want to know a life in Russia----please listen music of Dmitry Shostakovich....
But don't forget this is a sight of "Russian intelligentsia", not the rest of Russian people :)

Is the conductor Karl Richter?
No, Svetlanov. I mentioned it in the description.
No, he's Evgeny Svetlanov live in 1976 on the 70th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth.
No
Is difficult than Beethoven or Sibelius?
Fulvio Corda The Shostakovich concerto is technically more demanding yes and I would say it’s harder...
This piece is MUCH more manageable in terms of the left hand than it sounds. The difficulty is endurance and sustaining intensity. I would argue Beethoven and Sibelius are more difficult.

I agree about the passacaglia, I do prefer Oistrak's version of it.
Martin Singer agree. Will listen to Oustrakhs. Favorite is Sitkovetsky
@@alexpate8626 Sitkovetsky is truly amazing. Second to none. Wish he lived just 20 more years...
I much prefer Oistrakh’s interpretation.

100crowns Not necessarily. Rostropovich called him a very good communist. This was not a term of endearment.
