I consider Khachatryan one of the best current male violinist in every aspect, faultless techniques, deep understanding and fabulous interpretation of the music.
@@adrianwright8685 There are quite a few current top female violinists on my list namely Hahn, Steinbacher, Shoji and Jansen, but like I said I don't compare male vs female violinists.
It's truly a tragedy that less than 3k people liked this video T.T and not even 100k have watched this marvelous performance. Wonderful performance by everyone, especially Sergey.
Other than Oistrakh, this is my favorite performance of this dark masterpiece. I'd also like to thank Brett and Eddy from TwoSetViolin for directing me to this performance.
i can't listen to other performances of this piece because none of them compare to khachatryan's interpretation, especially of the first movement. the amount of emotion he puts into each note is incredible!
Breath-taking performance of a truly great violin concerto, exquisitely nuanced in all its shades of emotion! I am entranced by the splendor of the composition and its extraordinary musical execution by soloist, conductor and orchestra. A gift to humanity, resurrected after its performance had initially been forbidden. The cadenza manifests unique majesty in musicality. Incredible luminosity in violin playing.
A brave interpretation of a brave man .. You have to go to a very dark place to understand this piece well and bring the themes and emotions of the piece on stage . I remember once reading something along the lines of : ".. [A poet] is a daring adventurer ; a person who is willing to dive oceans , climb mountains , witness hurricanes and face death in order to uncover the truth in art .."
an incredible, spiritual, magnificent, combative and disarming music. the greatest thing composed in the 20th century. The little person, full of curiosity and dreams, defies the demon who, with a cold heart and eyes, wants to destroy the living, beautiful, emotional. But love is stronger, the urge to live, the longing for beauty, the incredibleness of creation. I can't hear it without being moved. blossom-tender ! Khachatryan a flow of emotions. Thanks!
This recording and Oistrakh's recording are by far the best in terms of musical and technical interpretation. The emotions that make up the piece are truly magnificient.
When I watch Khachatryan playing I feel positively envy and inspired. I just would like to do something in my life with the same passion and involvement as he is always expressing in his performances. Amazing!
There is one that isn’t better, but is equal and that is Oistrakh but that’s mainly because this concerto was literally partially written by him and for him (IMHO)
Try the recording by Hillary Hahn when she was young, just beginning her career. She infuses this dark symphony with a glow of inner beauty. It’s different-not playing with Oistrakh’s power, but still a performance that can stand on its own.
There's a lovely moment at the end, during the applause, when the camera looks over the shoulder of two members of the violins, and they look at each other and the woman shrugs, as though to say, "We play well, but then there is this."
32:47 - I LOVE what’s he’s doing with the sound here. Cutting it off is very impactful. He’s done it a few times. 32:14 is another example. The shift is heard ever so slightly, but very deliberate with the change in dynamics.
What an emotional rollercoaster! After going through the ominous feeling of terror, political frenzy, and mournful reflection, I just lost all words for the last chapter other than saying how it made me cry uncontrollably. Esp. as it follows the passacaglia which is filled with not only sadness but also sounds like Shostakovich ruminating over his own role and guilt in all that transpired. No one survives totalitarianism without losing a piece of themselves. Those who hold on to every part are either in jail or lost their lives.
Sergey K. hat das richtige feeling für dieses Konzert und bringt was neues rüber, eine große Bandbreite an Assoziationen und es kommt authentisch rüber.
Simply incredible!!! So much of control and musicality from start to finish!! Had me enthralled throughout! Kudos to the amazing soloist, orchestra and conductor!
Cadenza at 29:07 Edit: I'm sorry I actually listed the cadenza previously at 30:28 but it actually occurs earlier as the conductor stops moving the baton at 29:07 and the orchestra stops playing as well there.
The best rendition out there. Truly amazing playing. So musical and powerful. So well in tune. Such flawless technique. Great performance by all involved. You could see the orchestra members knew something special was happening right in the moment.

That's some tuba power starting at 24:16 giving some backbone to an already mesmerizing performance. Between 28:17 to 29:00 it's almost if the feeling of "Menace" was put into sound. I'm no classical expert, but from the work i heard from Shotstakovitch most give me a sense of gravity coupled to the ineluctability of history that can't be stopped. In addition i think he retranscribes what threat means in music to the omnious level. I came here from twoset violin as well to see the entire piece and it's great, thanks to the orchestra, conductor and Mr Khachatryan.
Besides the dedicatee and editor of this concerto, David Oistrakh, this is one of the finest interpretations of this emotional reflection of the suffering Shostakovich experienced
Khachatryan interpretation just overwhelms me with tears, especially the 4th movement is just breathtaking. He has found the core of this piece like no other. For example just listen to the part starting at 36:10 and how he waits for the orchestra, and the impact it has, and compare that to any other recording out there. No match.
34:00. Der Übergang von Cadenza zum Orchester. Perfekt, nahtlos. Man merkt gar nicht sofort, dass die Cadenza vorbei ist, wenn man die Augen geschlossen hat.
There is no better performance of this amazing work, the outpouring of a tortured and melancholy soul. There are passages where I just gasped in astonishment at the sheer beauty and intensity of this youngster's playing, and the whole section from 21:30 to 34:13 leaves me speechless.
You wouldn't even have to listen to the audio to know it's an astounding performance. I could see the cello player behind him nearly broke down and cried during that first movement.
I could watch this, 40 hrs a day.
Amazing. Thx Brett and Eddy from TwoSet Violin for pointing out this performance.
