I was a student working a summer job in the Russian Pavilion in Montreal's EXPO 67. One day off, I came back to the Pavilion and by chance saw this performance by Kogan on a big screen. The scene of him play the Burlesca etched in my mind forever. 57 years have passed it is still as fresh as when I first heard it.
Wow. It is as if Shostakovich wrote this concerto for Kogan to play. The heart-touching and invigorating style of Shotakovich's composition and the fierce passion of Kogan combine to create a fantastic style of playing unparalleled by any other musician. Thanks for the upload!

Used and abused by the Soviet regime... Remember Myticha....First and best punk violin player ever... He still burns in our hearts and souls for eternity and beyond...
Kogan was another master of this work, virtually as brilliant as his compatriot, David Oistrakh. And yes, the Passacaglia is extremely moving....and the the Burleska finale is beyond belief. No one else could to this work justice other than a Russian.
Excellent! It's always wonderful to see live footage of Kogan. Thank you! Sitkovetsky's performance of the cadenza is a must if you enjoy how raw, aggressive and technically masterful Kogan's performance is. Out of this world in my opinion.
it's partially inspiring to see films like these when they are casual. i have such a godlike image of kogan, heifetz, oistrakh and others in my head, and it is shocking to see that he doesn't have super powers or have angel wing, that he is just a man.
We are so lucky to see this entire performance in this video. Thank you very much for sharing. Like others here, of all the versions of this great concerto I watched or listened ti Kogan's is the best. Prior to discovering Kogan my previous "best" was Vengerov's with Rostropovich conducting. This black and white video and Kogan's total immersion and subdued expression are just perfect for this concerto composed in 1948 the year he was "purged" by Stalin the second time.
For we older folks, this performance invites comparison to Oistrakh's premiere recording of this piece with Mitropoulos and the NYP in Jan. of 1956, with which I became acquainted in 1975. Any thoughts? Hoomeyow!!

No one else plays like he does. Amazing raw passion, constrained, intensified.
Absolute Genius.... Remember Myticha..
His violin sounds like a laser beam. What a historic document. Thanks so much.
Совершенно невообразимое техническое мастерство!
Undoubtedly, the Greatest Violin Concerto of 20 century.
Incredibly moving.... Passacaglia as I never heard it.... ! what a power this music and Kogan's playing has...

Leaves me breathless in awe. A drama is unfolding, and it is working through Leonid Kogan. I can't find the words.

Прекрасная и серьёзная музыка, особенно 3-я и 4-я часть...
thanks for all your upoads!
Kogan is just the best violinist of all time . Yes it is completely objective . And if you disagree , you're wrong 😂😂😂😂
100 процентов
I agree.

Why is the whole cadenza missing?
Because it pulled back the curtain too far.
13:41 3rd movement
13:31 - this is the only case when Kogan conducted, this occasionally happened in his childhood :))
What is being played at around 21:30? The piano has been stuck in my head forever.
Why is the camera so close to him?
KOGAN = THE GOAT OF GOATS
Sorry, at 14:11 could you tell me the name of the monument??
Passacaglia
I meant the statue with the violin, not the movement of the concerto. But thanks 🙂
It’s Sergey Konenkov‘s 'Paganini'
6:30 Scherzo 🎻
Forget Oistrach, sorry. Kogan was the King!
My goodness!! Who is the composer of the quartet Kogan plays before the 4th movement?
Dracula
Thanks.
togo Nowhere Can you be aby more spesific if at all possible?
togo Nowhere Who is the composer, and are you talking about the movie or the ballet?
Artur Korotin
No, just Dracula :))
!!!!
dope
Signori, giù il cappello ...
An incompetent disciple at 12:45
he is always angry. he always remembers Stalin and oppression !!!
