- Toyota 4Runner/FJ CRUISER • FREE Maintenance Tech Tips - OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER • Episode 14.0
Another easy and straightforward maintenance job that, most if not all Toyota and Lexus models use an oil control valve in one way or another.
When the oil control valve filter gets clogged up, it can cause a very substantial oil restriction to the cylinder heads valve train.
Goes without saying, that if left un-addressed it could take your engine, due to oil starvation.

Your support, means the world to me!!
Thank you for watching!
If the owner has been doing oil flushes, I would strongly recommend replacing these filters, cause a lot of sludge gets loosed and sure down to the pan.
But, some may work its way to these filters.
Viking appreciate all of your videos they have been so helpful. In December bought a 2015 TRD Pro 138K on it have done all the maintenance and fluid changes. Without your videos would not have been able to do most of it. You are doing great work in helping us DYI'ers out there so hoping many good things come your way. All the best!!!
🙏🏻 Thank you!!
I appreciate your kind words!
You're a good man and I thank you so much for your excellent style and detail!!
🙏🏻 Thank you!
You're doing the Lord's work. Getting me to worry about a part of my 4Runner I didn't even know it had. 😂 I'm only at 52 K on my '17 ORP, but this'll be added to the to-do list.
Absolutely Sir!!
Thanks for all you do for the 4Runner community my Brother.
👊🏻 My pleasure!!
What’s up brother? I tackled the two oil valve control filters on my forerunner today. It wasn’t too bad of a job, worst part was clearance for tools. Just wanted to mention to you that my forerunner is a 2019, with 115,000 miles on it. The two filters that I replaced Were not bad at all. They were slightly discolored but not clogged at all. Maybe because I change the oil religiously at 5000 miles kept these filters clean. At least I know I have peace of mind that they are clean now. Thanks for your videos. They are very helpful
You’re very welcome!!
Outstanding work 👏🏻
Thanks!
🙏🏻 Thank you so much!
I appreciate your support!!
Thanks for all you do, we truly appreciate you more than you know!
I really appreciate your kind words. 🙏🏻
Thank you Viking for all your support and help even for retired technicians ❤
It’s my pleasure!! 🙏🏻
This was a great tip thank you very much. I am a maintenance fanatic.
You got it!!
Another helpful video as always.👍👍 Ever think about hosting a meet and greet like cars and coffee or something followed by maybe a off road drive? 🤔 I think that be cool. I'm down for that
I’ve most certainly thought about it, it’s something I would most definitely like to do.
Thank you for your support!!
Love your videos, as always. Thank you for sharing.

I just changed my 2010
Limited, 198k miles the screens were clean with just a few tiny pieces of debris.. thanks Viking Garage! 🫡
Better safe then sorry, well done!!
@@VikingsGarage 💯 agreed 🫵👍👍
Just wondering do you buy all your work tools or does Toyota dealer provide them to you! How did you get into the business my son is 32 and thinking of getting into a career did you go to school? As always great video love learning Tundra 2021 off road do all my maintenance just got the K03’s after 58,000 miles on the Michelin oem tires! Love them also psi 30 front and rear 33 on sticker! Town fair tire set front 39 and rear 37 psi doing chalk test after stops raining! Toyota set all around at 36 psi old tire same size now! I ran 33 front and 36 rear on old!
I started wrenching as an hobby, but it was clear that I actually enjoyed it a lot.
The majority (95%) of the tolls you have to buy. Dealership have to carry all of the special tools needed.
I appreciate your support!
Have a part number for those amber fog lights????
Wife's 23 (2wd, yeah don't hate me) SR5 has LED fog lights but am not having success in finding amber set.

Thanks sir. I did replace these filters on 07 lexus es 350. They were clogged like crazy 😂.
I do use Seafoam as I had pretty good results before
I can only imagine!! 😅👊🏻
Hats off to you good sir. Thank you 🫡
Much appreciated!! 🙏🏻
great info, Bro. Didn't even know about these filters..These filters are relatively inexpensive, but what do you think about cleaning them and re-installing, if they're in good shape?
It’s an option, as long as they are not too old. That plastic gets hard and brittle over time.
Thanks for this excellent video! I was wondering if you have seen oil leaks on passenger side VVTi oil line (the lower end, opposite of the filter side) of 5th gen 4runners? I have a leak which has left an oily film all over the power steering pump and I have read that it may be the VVTi oil tube leaking where it connects to the block.
It’s somewhat common, probably that VVTi tube.
Keep bringing the maintenance tips! Much appreciated. The red TRD logo does look better on the skid plate in my opinion.
💯
Thank you!
Great video!!I have a quick question,I have a 2024 4runner trd off road and it makes a irregular ticking noise when warm at idle. Its not all the time though
I wish I could help. Impossible to diagnose noises this way.
Thanks for another great video!
Curious-what kind of ramps do you have? Thinking about buying a set but wanted to see who has used them and how they hold up to the 4Runner’s weight??
Thank you!
These are actually fairly inexpensive but very durable.
I’ve but the 4Runner on top of them a bunch of times, zero issues.⬇️

You’re very welcome!!
My pleasure. 🤘🏻
Have you watched any rainman ray. He is a master mechanic, now has his own successful shop and videos were the driving force, he also has some good humour. Keep doing it I hope one day may you be as successful as Ray. Cheers
I haven’t heard of him, but will look him up. I appreciate your support and positive thoughts.
I really wish to eventually make a living out of this.
I did mine early too because I had so much metal first couple oil changes. I found tiny bit of metal in there too.
Oh wow. That’s not good.
Paulo a donde conseguiste las letras TRD.? Yo Necesito remplazar las mias también en la placa de metal, gracias

Thanks for everything you do! I cant wait to see your channel continue to grow. Always very informative and any 4runner owner will tell you how much they have learned from watching you. Keep on keeping on! Thanks again for another informative video man! Truck is looking good after the detail by the way!
I appreciate you and your kind words!! 🙏🏻
Thank you!!
Love these maintenance videos! Another one added to the list when the time comes. Thanks for sharing!

Another great video, didn't know those little guys existed. I got 144k on my 2013, I will have to look into this.. Are the oil control valve filters done at the 100,000 mile service? I had all my service done at local Toyota dealership. Starting to doubt some things with the dealership, after doing some of my own maintenance and with local old school mechanic I started going to..
You should by all means doubt the dealership, the stuff I see should be illegal.
Those filters were definitely not done at 100k miles.
I would just get them done if I was you, fairly inexpensive and will give you piece of mind .
Awesome rig, Paul! One thing The Motor Oil Geek does when changing his oil is he pours a new quart of oil in when the old oil has almost drained completely and lets that new oil drain out as well. Thanks for the tips!
I’m not that concerned but I get it. 😅
You should have your relative perform this on your old 4 runner and show those filters. You do a great job on your videos. Please keep it up as long as you can.
Funny you mention that… I’m trying to get him to do it and send me the footage. W’ll see.
Thank you!!
I have an MR2 Spyder and also use it to hold parts in my garage during projects
👊🏻 Hey we got to do what we got to do 😅
Hey man ive been thinking alot about what you said about putting in alot of money and time to make videos. I've actually thought about telling you this before but didnt think i needed to but since you brought it up, Have you ever thought of starting a Patreon ? you have 18k subscribers and even if you only had half or so supporting you on Patreon that should be plenty to support this channel until you hit big time. I would gladly pay $5 a month or so to support this channel.
I’ve thought about it, I seriously have.
I’m thinking I might do it. I believe it’s smarter to do that than to have to abandon the project.
I still got so much knowledge to share with you guys.
I appreciate your input, I’m going to look into it.
@VikingsGarage I hope you do. I don't want to see this channel end. Maybe run a poll and see how many of your subscribers would do it
🙏🏻
Love seeing my man under a car 😍🥰🥰
🥰😘
Does it matter if you drain the oil then change that filter? I saw you added oil then changed that filter. Thanks!
Doesn’t really matter, the oil drains down to the crankcase.
I did it that way because I changed the small filters the following day.
I never walk away from a vehicle that can be started (which I’ve done an oil change on) without re-filling it with oil.
Small detail, that can cause expensive repairs. (I’ve seen it with other Techs)
So to answer your question,
you can do it before or after an oil change .
@@VikingsGaragegreat thank you! I’ve got 200k but do changes 5k miles. Thinking of doing this!
I most certainly would. 👊🏻
Good job as usual!
Much appreciated!!
Great video, as always. Check out AMSOIL's Oil Filter EA15K49-EA. It's the same as the Toyota's discontinued TRD oil filter version for our 1GR-FE's. The filter housing drain adapter is much better as it screws in and doesn't make a mess like the push/snap in one can.
That’s actually a very good tip. I totally forgot about that. I do have that adapter in my box, very clever.
Thank you!!

Thank you so much brother!
Great video and appreciate all your time and these educational videos.

I wholeheartedly agree about oil change intervals.
I pray that you will have 1 million subscribers someday.
I appreciate that!!
I’m trying. 🤷🏼♂️
Did my first oil change on my new to me 2012 4Runner last week. Went about 1500 miles on the oil the dealership had put in it. I had two 5q jugs of Kirkland oil that I had bought for my jeep wrangler so I’m going to run it for a short 2k interval (trip to the beach towing a hiker trailer) before starting Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage at 110k. At that point I’ll go to 5k intervals (that’s what the original owner was doing). The only issue I had with the oil change was removing my skid plate. I have the sr5 and it is on a hinge when it drops. I struggled for about 15 minutes and finally decided to just crawl under from the passenger side tire and drain with the skid plate hanging. Liked and subscribed to the channel to help get the content out to others to benefit everyone. Your videos are appreciated by this new 5th gen owner!
I appreciate you and your support!!
Thank you and congrats on your 4Runner!! 👏🏻
Cut the tabs off. Much easier with them removed. Also you want high mileage at this point. Helps with reducing oil consumption.
@@paladain55 I’ll consider cutting the tabs if I can get it removed next change. I could feel the skid plate “shift” a bit but it wouldn’t release and I didn’t want to possibly damage the tabs/brackets or whatever they are. And yes I’m going with the high mileage at the next change. I haven’t run either oil more than 1500 miles yet but there has been no noticeable oil consumption. There looks to have been a leak at some point from an area around the tensioner chain cover that Viking did a video on but it doesn’t seem to be leaking now but I am keeping an eye on it every time I check the oil.
That detail shop did a great job. She looks gorgeous
Thank you 😅
I was more than happy at the end.
Thanks for sharing all this good information. A couple a weeks ago I got a new 4runner from the dealer with 5k miles on it, it was being used by the dealership executives from what I was told. I highly doubt they did anything regarding breaking oil changes at 1k. As soon as I got home I did an oil change on it, checked the oil filter, and saw some small metal debris in the oil filter. Would you recommend another oil change at 6k-8k to try to get any missing debris? maybe a flush?
If that will help you put your mind at ease, YES.
Otherwise I wouldn’t be too worried.
Tq spec on that banjo bolt please!
Okay good, because I’m sitting on 51,000+ miles on my Runner and thought I needed it.
You’re good! 👍🏻
You can buy a original toyota aluminum filter housing from toyota about $30 my original plastic one cracked.
I’ve done that in the past. I don’t see it as a priority, for right now.
I’m the one torquing it down.😎
You are giving great advice sir- I’m waiting till it’s cooler then I will start taking the timing chain cover off to reseal it and I remember that we have to put a bead of fipg on the lip of cylinder head to block
Absolutely!!
There is a spot exactly there that needs just a bit extra, easy to spot. 😉
Tedious job but totally doable. 💪🏻
Great tip, love your 4runner manteinence videos 💪greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Gracias!! 🙏🏻
Agradezco mucho el tiempo que te tomas para realizar videos de este tipo. Nuevamente; muchas gracias.
🙏🏻
Love your videos as always! If you want a tip when draining the filter housing, insert the plastic drain thing into an old wine bottle then push the drain thing up into the housing. The oil will be contained inside the wine bottle. You get no oil on your hands. Keep up the videos. Thank you.
That’s a great tip!!
I appreciate you sharing it
Your 4runner is not lifted right? Why didn’t you consider leveling it?
It’s not lifted. I’m happy for now with the way it sits. I love it.
@@VikingsGarage I remember you installing bilstein 5100 on a customers Grey 4runner. I was trying to go for exact setup. Did you think that would make the truck ride too rough?
@taifmunsur That particular setup, it did. I use my truck daily, for daily use it’s overkill,
My personal opinion.
@@VikingsGarage ok makes sense. wanted to get your opinion
Any time.
Thank you. Man that bandaid tripped me out i thought you rippped the chit outta your skin. Great video thanks again
I most certainly did, it was bad.
Need to start bringing all the correct tools from work. 😅
Thanks for the tips,I will be ordering for my 4 runner
👏🏻
That’s a great information
Thanks for all your videos
Your welcome!! 🤘🏻
Thanks!
😱🙏🏻 Thank you so much!!
Will be put to good use. God bless!!
@@VikingsGarage you’re welcome sir
Thx man!! Well appreciated 👍
No problem!!
Great video and explained the differences between the FJ and the 4Runner. Question...what are your thoughts on the oil catch can craze? Seems that if they were going to be as necessary as folks are making them out to be, they would be installed on all direct injection engines.
Unless you’re running a racing application, it’s completely overkill/unnecessary
@@VikingsGarage Thank you for that. That has been my thought since I first heard of them. Seems like they are all the rage right now and I have started to wonder. I trust your opinion on things after following your channel for some time now.
🙏🏻
I must have missed the episode about the recovery points. Looking for a recommendation for my 5th gen.

@@VikingsGarage Thank you !!
I am interested to hear your thoughts on the use of "Catch Cans" / oil separators?
To my knowledge that’s race car stuff, that’s where it makes sense.
@@VikingsGarage Thank you for the reply!
Amazing content!
Thank you!!
Torque spec is 46ft/lb.
Not according to Toyota instructions. I triple checked
@@VikingsGarage I thought it was the same as the spec in the FJ video? What is it?
It’s in the video Sir, 48 ft/lbs
@khoi_tran although to be honest , I feel like 46ft/lbs would be sufficient. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarage Do'h I paused the video and it covered number partially. I read it wrong lol.
Wow, I do NOT use or recommend an engine flush solution unless I first pulled the valve covers and the oil pan first for a visual inspection of a suspected sludge condition. Then, after cleaning them I would still be reluctant to use a flush unless absolutely necessary based on the inspection. Ask me why I say this. Bad experience!
I get it!! I’m familiar.
(I did sneak my scope in there before hand, but at 40k… no surprise there)
I will me adding this to my maintenance schedule at 90k miles. I change my blended oil vehicles every 3k Synthetic every 5k. Therefore, I don't see the need to do a flush. The only time I have ever done a flush was on the 80s to customers cars who didn't take care of their cars and would Change the oil and it would glob out. we would then run straight kerosene in the engine to flush it. Back then alot of oils were wax based.
@smokinwithskruggs I can see that, funny you mention kerosene… it’s in that flush as well.
Thank you for sharing.
@VikingsGarage got a question. Got a 2019 sr5 and I've always had a steering wheel shake at certain speeds while driving. In the 4runner forums, they mentioned alignment which I did, rotating the tires, or the worse part, changing the needle bearing. It only shakes at certain speeds. I have oem trd pro rims with michelin defender ltx 265/70/17, what should I check first?
@@roguejaguar95 That's a good question and although I am not Viking here is my two cents based on over 50 years experience. Check the tire/ wheel balance on a good high speed balancer, any good tire shop should have a good one. Honestly, that should have been done. Here is a list from first to last: 1. Check tire pressure and adjust. 2. Check tread for cupping and flat spots. 3. Pull the wheels, check for balance and rotate in that order. 4. Get an alignment. 5. Now, check for other things if there is still an issue.
Thanks
You got it.
Thanks for doing this. I bought my 4th forerunner last fall. A 2023 trd off road premium. I didnt know these filters existed. I’m having to start all over learning the ins and outs of my forerunner due to my last new one being a 2007 model. It was an entirely different animal.
It sure was. Congrats on the new ride!!
