I don't agree with this idea of illegal immigration. I am in Sydney I came across many Punjabi s who have come here on contract marriages. They say in Punjab their family has no respect if their children's don't go overseas. When they can afford 30 to 50 lakhs why not do something in india. Or choose the difficult way of studying hard and going through legal way. They like short cuts. But yes without any doubts illegal immigrants must be punished. They can't choose an easy when we work so hard here, pay heavy taxes.
I think Punjabis always daydream about somehow moving out of India and go to US/UK/Canada/Australia. And somehow start a new life. I don't know why Punjabis are so hopeless of living life in India. So much so that they decide to enter countries illegally.

It's not just in USA, but it's also in Europe. Last year when I went on tourist visa to Kiev, Ukraine. The immigration was very strict for those who come from India and especially from Punjab. My birth place is in Punjab, though I'm not from Punjab, itself. They almost deported me, just because they thought I'll cross the border of Ukraine to enter western Europe. Later I got to know that Ukraine scrapped it's no visa for Indian tourist for 15 days, just because of illegal immigrants from Punjab, used this facility to cross over to western Europe. I felt very ashamed and disgusted. Just couldn't understand why don't they get that it spoils country's image along with the opportunities. Government should blacklist all such illegal immigrants from India in the best interest of other hardworking and genuine indians.

For Punjab, this lure of illegal immigration stems from a false sense of pride. There is absolutely nothing that justifies illegal immigration after spending an equivalent of $100,000. The generation from 60's that immigrated to the UK had valid reasons - They were escaping poverty/ bad living conditions/ desperation to provide for a large family back home. However, these days it completely defies logic - If you have 50 lakhs to spend on illegal immigration and not on opening a business in any part of the the country, then I am sorry you're priorities are mixed up!
This issue has tremendous social ramifications back home. Families are selling off their ancestral land holdings to fund these trips which mostly end in death or deportation. Ultimately the parents of these youths have to bear the brunt in their twilight years.
To those clueless troll bots commenting that punjab never received any investment/ punjab rivers are being diverted, here is my answer. Punjab was an industrialized society since the early 70's. The affluence of cities like Ludhiana and Jalandhar stemmed from this industrialization. Also, rivers flow INTO punjab, not the other way round (guess you failed school geography as well!)

Guajaratis first joined the illegal immigration route from Mexico to USA. I know a lot of Gujarati came illegally via mexico and into the US. Most of them got caught and now deported back to India. Some made money but some didnt. Indians started coming from this route since early 90s.
It were not gujaratis but punjabis. My moms 2 uncle went to America from Cuba as a fake refuge in 1976.

My wife met a Punjabi hairdresser here in New York city. She came on a tourist visa and stayed illegally forever. She left her little son back in India and didn't see him for the last 6 years. Her husband also illegally works in a petrol pump. They don't make a lot by doing all these kinds of jobs here. They can earn as much as this in India if you look at what they earn vs expenses. It was really disheartening.

Once I was in London, one receptionist was punjabi, he came to uk for studies. He spent 20-30 lakhs for studies. Then after he got short term visa for work he was working as a receptionist and was.married with a East European. Was living in a shared house some how managing. The Portuguese government had a special immigration program for people who were there before India took over the state from the Portuguese. Hence they were given the right to immigrate to Portugal. Since its a part of the EU and so was the UK ... They would produce documents with the appropriate parents' names and dates of birth, etc. Don't know much more about it.

I remember a Sikh guy who came to US in student visa then paid a girl got married got his green card then started driving truck earning 7000 $ he was a nice guy though. I advised him to go back he said it’s a prestige issue and already sold his land and have a family waiting for him to settle so they can come to US and get social security and other benefits, so this is a business invest first and then wait for good returns

Put 50 lakhs in an FD. At 6% you make 3 lakhs per year. Take up a job in India and you can make that money risk free.
With 30 to 50 lakhs in my hand I can easily start a decent business with far less than that and still have a lot of that money left in hand to spare.
Its far better than spending that much amount to go to western countries and then be a cab driver to earn money which a lot of people do.

People are ignorant to know that in today's time we can create jobs,passive incomes and live in India literally like kings.
Living in US comes with a big cons where there is constant racism, thieves,high taxes ( which should be paid by everyone and is forcefully transacted from your account) mortgage, rent is damm expensive. You can just survive with bare minimum and won't be able to save much .
Also ur life will be at risk since u might save money to live in cheap places chances are u will be robbed and u can't even call cops since u are illegal immigrant .

@Mehak DeEp Well I am no expert in finding ways to get good life or wealth generation but dedication and satisfaction can definitely help..first thing is to stop comparing yourself with others..especially people who have moved abroad and only show their flashy life on social media but actually cleaning toilets in Airports..nothing wrong with cleaning toilets though..but most important thing for good life is to do what you love and feel contended with it.. The American/European nations have all the facilities but remember they are Capitalist countries and expensive to maintain..just like maintaining aBMW..it has all features but will suck your savings for maintenance..Just to give you an example-my dad was a Govt. employ his whole life with a very meager salary and one of my Uncle was an industrialist with millions behind him but was never seen with his family or having a good time.. what is the use of such Good life which is not a life at all...remember the more you want in life you will have to pay for it...that uncle of mine died at the age of 71yrs with multiple organ failure and bad family relations..my dad is 82 yrs and still happy with whatever he has..! I think COVID has taught us all a lesson..millionaires are dying alone..or fighting for toilet papers..same like the poor people..so where is the difference..as for feeding the family..use your skills to create job for yourself..getting a job is already history.. I lived in USA for over 4 years and saw many people who couldn't rent a place , drive a car or afford health care (possibly because they were illegal).
I use to go to a restaurant often where a waiter was from punjab, He has not seen his wife and son in last 10 years.
I use to ask him if he plans to visit his family( he never answered).
One fine day he mentioned "Maa chali gyi" ( his mother passed away) I could see the sadness in his eyes.
But much to my surprise he was still trying to find a way to get his son to USA, he said he will have a comfortable life here as he doesn't work in India.
I moved back to India shortly after that conversation, hopefully if he decided to bring his son to USA it was by legal means and I wish he lives the life they imagined for him.
But why choose long long route rather than directly landing at Mexico? Is there another reason behind it?
