Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy my first 'favourites' video! Please check the description beneath the video for a list of all the supplies featured. :)
I already love your swatching videos so this, your first favourites, is lovely to watch since you combined the colours so nicely and even brought in some bonus extras! I love the vintage book! So beautiful! 🥰😍🤩😘
Yes I would love to see your monthly favourites Natasha. I love everything that you share with us and the latest additions of supplies and your thoughts are so interesting and inspiring. You create a wonderful experience for us all in the way that you put things across. You make it feel like I’m in the room , relaxing with you, as you chat through your latest musings or share your techniques. Thank you for sharing so much with us in such a wonderful way.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a kind comment, Jeany! This is exactly what I'm trying to achieve with this channel - I'd love for it to feel like a club or a gathering of friends where we all share ideas and inspirations. I try to keep the pace of the videos calm and peaceful, so that people can perhaps put them on while they're working and I can just chat away in the background! I'm so glad that you're enjoying them - thank you for watching!
Hear hear!! I second that 💖
Colours glorious, vintage bird book, absolutely lovely! I love vintage books on wildlife but then I am fairly vintage and they remind me of another world, lost in the past... 😃🥰🎨
Thank you! I know exactly what you mean about the vintage books. I find them fascinating and they always give me a peaceful, cosy feeling.
@@NatashaNewtonArt I can’t wait for your paintings of birds eggs🥚 💗
I loved seeing your April favorites, Natasha! I'm loving old books and yours is really beautiful. Thank you for sharing your lovely things ♡
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🧡
I air fist punched when you said Daniel Smith Quinacridone Rose. That is my absolutely favourite color ever. I love the palette you put together, they are so gorgeous
Thanks Oto! I can totally see why it's your favourite colour ever! It's so vibrant and works beautifully with either muted or lighter colours. I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with new colour palettes at the moment!
YES WE ENJOYED THIS AND YES WE WILL BE EXPECTING A FAVORITE VIDEO MORE OFTEN.
I WILL MAKE SURE I FILM MORE OF THESE! ;)
I love your watercolour favourites, I'm always drawn to blues and greens. Your vintage bird book is lovely, really looking forward to seeing some paintings inspired by it 😊
Thanks so much, Gemma! Watch this space. :)
I would love to see more of the vintage books that inspire you!
Coming soon! :)
I don’t even paint/birds... but I want that book now!
Enjoyed the video but the biggest thrill was. OMG she still has one of those label machines. Off to Amazon, I think I had mine at school in the 1970s, not sure I need one but I am organising my art supplies. I am using the Ladybird Garden Birds for my inspiration copying and wc all of them, did it 50 years ago at school with pencils and got a Collins French dictionary as a prize. There’s a great palette on Amazon 12 half pan that comes with pans and those sticky magnets.
I'm finding the DYMO labeller so much fun and so addictive! A very useful purchase for the studio too. ;)
I really enjoy your videos with a cup of tea. When I see that you’ve posted, I put the kettle on and today I’m outside in an egg chair being inspired. I’m a miniature painter and use acrylic but I’m now inspired to dabble with paper, pencils and watercolours. I’m also using inks on the miniatures and getting some interesting results. You really are inspirational. You make me want to experiment. I also like your relaxing voice and the calm music you choose. ✨☀️🌟🙏🏼🥰👍🏻👏🏻
This is lovely to hear! Thank you. 🧡 I'm pleased that you've been inspired to experiment! I only really started experimenting more last Autumn. I was working up until this point with acrylics, gouache, and Acryla Gouache. Then I got into coloured pencils and watercolours and it's opened up a whole new world! I used watercolours years ago, but had largely abandoned them in favour of gouache and acrylics. I'm so glad I've rediscovered them and I feel excited about the work I will create. Enjoy playing with your materials! :)
Eeeeek!!! That Royal Talens sketchbook comes in YELLOW!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE! I've got myself a new shopping list, ha ha! I love that WIP painting you showed and I hope we get to see it when it's done. The bottom textured area is fascinating and I hope you tell us how you did it! I really like those Meeden palettes too, I also got a really nice easel from that brand last year that works wonderfully.
You'll definitely get to see more of the pieces I'm currently working on when they're finished! I'd also like to make a video at some point about how I achieve the textures in my paintings. And yes!! I was very attracted to the yellow Royal Talens sketchbook - such a happy colour! Good to hear about your Meeden easel too. I hadn't heard of that brand until I bought the palettes!
Smiled watching you showing your palette swatch card. Looks exactly like I do those cards :-)
Rare green earth Was one of my last tubes I bought. I really love it.
I also only use my watercolors in pans put together in my palettes. For me it is important to be ready any time I have some minutes for me painting or playing with colors.
I totally agree with you! For years, I only used watercolour from the tubes (I never poured it into pans) and then I really became interested in gouache and acrylic painting and kind of abandoned watercolour a little bit. I would use a tube of watercolour here and there, combining it in a painting with gouache, but it wasn't my main medium. But now I'm in love with it again! I'm finding that building the palettes is a very inspiring process, and I love the fact that the paints are there, all laid out and ready to use at a moment's notice, like you said! 🖤
Another really wonderful video. Thank you, Natasha! A littIe advice that might be useful for you or anyone else reading this: I also use magnets under my pans in all of my watercolor palettes, but I remove the metal pan holder stripes from the tray completely. That way I can fit 39 full pans or 65 half pans into a large metal palette (the ones that are usually sold for 24 full or 48 half pans). Also, this way I can easily reorganize my palettes (i.e. for traveling or some special projects) without having to buy more pans/tubes and setting up whole new palettes.
This is a really great tip - thanks Sonja! 🖤 It's amazing how many pans you can fit into a palette if you take out the metal holder.
I don’t know if you know this already, but if you tighten the metal tab on your palette before you put your pan in, it sits nice and tight and at an angle.
Thank you for the tip! :)
A lovely video, Natasha, and I just loved the illustrations in your bird book. I could see your style of painting etc would lend itself well to a book like that💗
Thanks Leah! Isn't it a gorgeous book? Very tempted to try to hunt down a copy of the first in this series too, if it's not too expensive. :)
Natasha, thank you for solving a real dilemma for me on my slowly increasing number of hand-made watercolor half-pans. I am housing them in an unused large Meeden palette like yours and swatching them in a 5”x5” watercolor journal I had in my stash. Win-Win!
Excellent! I'm loving keeping a sketchbook just for my watercolour swatches - it's so useful!
I loved this, looking forward to more in the future!☺️👏🏻
Thanks Lindsay! Definitely more to come! x
Thank you for sharing your April favorites and I would love to see future favorites. I always enjoy watching your art hauls and painting session. The vintage book is wonderful and I’m going to go through my books to see what treasures I can find. I’m excited to see your new artwork and hear about the new techniques you are experimenting with. Fran
Thanks Fran! I'll definitely be filming more of these as it's fun to share my inspirations as well as materials I'm currently enjoying using. Vintage books can be a huge source of inspiration! 🧡
I always love your color palette choices, so beautiful! For the metal palettes, if you bend the sticky outy arm in first, much further than you think you need it, then you can pop the pan in, arm side first, and they'll stick right in and won't move around at all. Gotta bend the arms in. No need for the extra magnets unless you want to eventually get rid of the insert and put the pans directly into the box (I do this quite a lot really as you can fit loads more pans in).
Thanks so much for the tip, Sarah! I'll have to see whether I can do that. :)
I love the colors you showcased! So much texture :)
Thanks Eve! They're beauties, aren't they? :)
Love your videos and your art! I look to seeing a video featuring your book collection. I’ve enjoyed seeing bits of them in some of your videos.
Thanks Terri! It will be fun to share some of them. :)
Love a favourites video!
That book is so gorgeous.
Thanks Laura! That book is such a treasure. 🧡
The 1970s pallet from choosing keeping is my big inspo right now. I’m just loving the colors and I FINALLY found my fave watercolor brush i lost for a few months lol
Also walking outdoors is very helpful to me when i need to clear out some thoughts.
Love the 1970s palette from Choosing Keeping! Such a unique palette of colours. And yay for finding your fave brush again!
I love seeing the colors palettes you put together. There is a unique vibe to each. :) I could just stare at color palettes all day haha.
I totally agree - I could too! I'm obsessed with colour palettes. 😂
Such a nice video. It would be really cool to see all your art/inspiration books, love those videos. I’m so ready for these watercolor palettes creations. 😍
Ah, thanks Simone! :) They're coming soon...
The hues are lovely, can not wait to see your paintings. 💕
Thanks Anne! :)
Loved the video and that bird book was amazing! I have been very curious about your books. I think I caught a glimpse of them behind the STUNNING tree painting.
Thank you! :) The book video is coming sometime soon (whenever my current crazy schedule allows!).
Excited to be the first comment! Your inspiring art and your calm manner make for such relaxing and joyful videos to enjoy. Thank you for what you do!
What a lovely first comment! Thank you so much, I appreciate your encouraging words and I'm so pleased to hear that you're enjoying the videos. :)
Love these videos 💕 and that vintage bird book is so neat! 😍
Thank you! 😊
Oh my gosh - your vintage bird/egg book is so fun. I adore vintage!!! Thank you for another great time sharing your talent with us!!
Thanks Barbara! I just love the aesthetic of this book - so inspiring!
I bought Rose Dore, army pants, and flip flops because Natasha painted with Rose Dore and wore army pants and flip flops. 🤣
But for reals tho, Alonya showed Rose Dore in a swatching video because of you and I loved it so much, it's coming in today from Amazon lol
I actually used to paint in army pants a few years ago! (But not flip flops). 😂
Very helpful!❤
Another lovely video Natasha!
I'm drawn to your watercolour favourites such a pretty palette of colours! I actually added Rose Dore to my collection after seeing it in one of your art hauls 😊
Thanks Lucy! 🧡 Rose Dore is so gorgeous, isn't it?
I really love your videos and absolutely love favorites videos. Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you so much, Laura! I'm so pleased you like them. :)
Looking forward to the book video📚❤️📖
I'm currently thinking about which ones to include! 🧡
Thank you for sharing your favourites. Always find this type of video introduces me to new things. Really looking forward to your series on customizing palettes. I am starting out so gradually adding to my hoard and would find your point of view valuable.
Thanks Patti! Putting paints into palettes like this is such a new thing for me! In the past, I've always just used it straight from the tube. But there's something inspiring about the whole process (it's making me consider and get to know the colours more) and the palettes will mean that the paint is right there, all laid out and ready to go at a moment's notice!
Thank you, Natasha! Your videos are always so informative. BTW, the lovely bird and egg book you showed is listed on Amazon/US for $890!!! You’re sitting on a gold mine!
Thanks Linda! And yes, someone else left a comment after yours saying the same thing! I wonder why it's so expensive?! That's crazy!
Great video. Love to see more. Inspirational as always. Love vintage books too.
Thanks Amanda - so pleased that you enjoyed it! There will be more of these in the future. :)
Just stumbled across your channel, and I've been bingeing all your videos. Love how relaxing they are! Though your definitely tempting me to buy new supplies hehe
Hi Brooke! I'm so glad you like the videos. :) (Apologies for tempting you to buy new supplies...he he!)
Lovely video, just subscribed as hoping to see more about your vintage books.
Thanks Liz, this is a lovely idea for a video and I've just made a note of it!
I love that book, funny I'v just done a watercolour painting of robins egg's hehe. Great video.
Ooh, that sounds lovely!
Very fun. I'm a nut for the vintage books too. Too bad we are so far apart, we could shop together! Arizona doesn't have the same visuals as your home, hence your love if greens and grey's. Mine would be a lot of red oxides and blue grey's😎
Red oxides and blue greys sound amazing together!
Golden acrylics are expensive here in u.s. too. Maybe just not as much. 😊. Love handmade wc’s.❤️
Ah, that's interesting to know! They're excellent quality though, I really love using them. :)
Lovely idea and great video as always... although my wish list on Jacksons is ever growing lol
You and me both! ;)
I would enjoy a monthly or season favorites video.
Noted! Thank you. :)
Love your videos and work. Your color swatches are always wonderful. Do you know you can paint on the cover of your etchr sketchbook with watercolor? 😊
I did know this and I've been wondering...should I, shouldn't I?! I don't know whether to do it or not! ;) And thank you!
I love watching your videos! I wanna move there, wherever it is you’re from, lol...because your paint and other art supplies are so much cheaper than where I live. A 5ml Daniel Smith tube paint, regardless of colour is $29.99 at Micheals...pretty much the only art store I have near me.😕
What?! Why is it so expensive?! That's insane. I live in Surrey, England, by the way. It's very beautiful here - you'd love it! ;)
Ohhh I would love to see your book stash 😊 and yes to monthly favourites!
Can I ask where is the best place to buy vintage books?
I usually buy mine from secondhand bookshops all over the place (they also often have a secondhand bookshop at National Trust properties - I've found a few great vintage books this way!), Oxfam/other charity shops, or Ebay. :)
I use a big clip on my sketchbook pages. Tbh as I’m a total novice it would probably improve things if the paint ran
Lovely video.
Thanks Ellen! 🖤
Love the book. I am actually just painting bird eggs.
Thanks Meda! They're such a lovely subject to paint. :)
This was such a great video,so nice to haer what is inspiring you at the moment and capturing your creative imagination. All ten of those colours you swatched look good together. I could see you creating amazing botanical paintings in the future but in your signature style maybe which would make them unique. I love yhe ide of bird's egg aintings too, maybe as liitle miniatures. The DS 'Fuchite' is a beautiful colour almost jade like. The Jenkin's Green is definitly a Natasha colour for sure!!! and it looks like it is a great mixing colour. Thanks to your reccommendation I now use the Pro Arte Prolene brushes and they are really good they also make a range for acrylics too that I'm looking into buying. Where would we be without the Dymo labler!!!! I have one too and I use it on everything! and I took your advice on the liitle dot magnets for all my handmade paints when they arrive.I think the months even the season's do influence what colours we favour and work with. The Talens' sketchbooks are definitly on a par with more expensive ones I have a lot of these myself plus the covers come in a lot of differnt colours too. I tend to favour a range called "Enviro" now as my go to sketchbooks as they are made from totaly recycled materials and have a kind of retro look to them or I make my own sketchbokks using hand made papers. The vintage bird book is lovely, looks like it might have been from the 40's/50's maybe, but I love that all the illustrations are paintings I wish more books were made like this today.if you have the time a monthlyfavourites video would be lovely, again its another little sneek peek behind the scenes in your creative process and I love that you share that with us.As always you speak about the colours in an insighful and reflective way and that inspires us to do the same with our own cahe of mediums.Great to get an added bonus of a painting in progress too.A future video of art books etc that inspire you would be great as well, I have an ever growing collection of books myself, but seeing what inspires you would be brilliant .Look forward to the videos of the palettes you are creating too.I am working on creating palettes myself now as it's not something I had thought of,but hearing you talk about creating them and why inspired me to do the same (still working on the tinted blacks palette) and it's a way to re-evaluate your materials and look at them in a new way.I love how your amazing videos feel like we are in a converstaion with you and that is what makes them so lovely to watch and listen too and what makes them so inspiring as well.
P.s some more of my handmade watercolours arrived this weekend including Tonjas!! I will update you via email when all I have ordered has arrived, thank you again for inspiring me to make the change to working with this kind of watercolur paint,it was definitly the right choice for me in my recovery and as I'm getting used to a new physicality and also having to paint in a new way because of this and I'm excited for my creative future and these beautiful handmade paints are part of this new journey.
Hi Matt! I keep thinking about working on some botanical paintings, but then I become unsure of myself and don't do anything about it! But the 10-colour palette I featured in this video would be a beautiful one for that particular subject. 🖤 I have, however, made a start on the birds' egg paintings! I'm so pleased to have got you into using the Pro Arte Prolene brushes - they've seriously been my favourites for YEARS! But I'll tell you the new brushes I'm in love with that I'll now be using constantly alongside those - the Betty Hayways watercolour brushes! They are amazing. One of the best brushes I've ever used. Check them out on the Chelsea Paper Company's site. :) I've seen your emails very quickly this morning and I'm so excited for you re: all of your new handmade watercolours! I just know that you're going to have so much fun with them, and I can't wait to see where it leads you... (I will respond to those separately when I have a moment). Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, Matt! x
@@NatashaNewtonArt I will look into the Betty Hayways watercolour brushes, seems logical if I'm upgrading my paints to upgrade my brushes as well, some other artists I follow also love these brushes, you are the third erson to recommend them so that tells me they are worth investing in.I'm glad you have made a start on the bird egg paintings,I though that was a lovely idea. I would suggest with botanical paintings, don't go for realistic images, but more in your style, like how you paint your images of birds, with all the patterns and textures on them I think if you created botanical paintings in that style they would be really striking. I can't wait to see where all the new paints etc you have purchased of late will take you in your brilliant artwork, it feels like we are both on a new journey of creative discovery and it's really exciting!
I really wanted the Etchr sketchbook, but the bigger cold pressed versions are sold out.
I know! I wanted another one for a project I'll be working on and noticed they'd sold out! It's my favourite watercolour sketchbook - the paper is beautiful.
How do you keep your white sketchbook so clean?!!😍 Talking of sketchbooks, I’ve been a devoted fan of the Seawhites for years but the paper in the last one I bought was disappointing. I wonder if they’ve changed it. Instead I bought myself the Royal Talens like the beautiful salmon pink one you showed here. I’ve not used it yet but I love the look of it!x
The Royal Talens sketchbooks are so good - I love them (and the gorgeous colours they come in too!). As for the white sketchbook - I've been a little bit careful but it's more by luck so far, I think! x
@@NatashaNewtonArt I bought mine in yellow a few weeks ago, I'm looking forward to trying it out. :) x
Good Morning Natasha!!!
Hello Laura! 🧡
Dear Natasha, let me start by saying, that I recently discovered your channel and since than binge-watching it. I adore your artwork it is really special and it is so inspiring, that often I immediately jump up to grab my paints. I am a watercolorist but because of you I am starting to dabble more into mixed media and I just ordered my first bunch of acrylic gouache paints (those from liquitex, because here in Germany I could better get a hold of them). You often mention in your videos, that they dry out very quickly on the pallet and that you have to be cautious not to squeeze too much paint out of the tube. I hope you don't mind me asking: Have you ever tried a wet pallet? There are commonly used for acrylic paints, mostly by people who do miniature paintings, since they need such a tiny bit of paint at once - to keep the paint moist over many hours. You can buy them on amazon and they contain special sponges and paper. Maybe that could be useful in your work? I don't like to be rushed by my paints, and maybe so don't you. ;)
Hi Andrea! Thanks so much for your lovely comments about my art and channel - I'm so pleased that it's inspiring you! 🖤 I used to have a stay-wet palette for my acrylic paints many years ago, and I've recently been looking at a couple of palettes that I could use with my acrylics and acryla gouache to keep them wet, so I may be making a purchase soon. :) It will hopefully stop me from feeling so stressed about wasting paint!
@@NatashaNewtonArt Hi Natasha, I ordered one for myself and it should arrive next week. If you are interested, I'll let you know, what I think of it and if it works well, when I was able to test it thoroughly.
Hi Natasha, thanks for your video. Love your Swatching and haul videos. I noticed that you love muted, dark and earthy palettes. I do UA-cam videos too, love those palettes too, but I like 3 limited colours challenge. My question is ever tried Caput Mortuum, golden ocher, and Ultramarine?
By the way I make my own watercolour paints and sketchbooks
@@MadebyDawn23 Do you sell your handmade watercolours?,and did you teach yourself to make them or did you go to a class or workshop?,it's something I'm realy considering doing myself,is it as lovely a thing to do as it always looks. I do make my own sketchbooks and love doing so.
@@avirtualcanvas7584 hi, thank for responding. I believe I taught myself because, I actually watched tons of videos and read a lot of vlogs in learning about pigments and their properties, about binders and preservatives. Then I learned about experimenting with my own binding formula. I buy pigment powders then started to make my own paints. Sorry I haven't put any of my paints up for sale. I live in the country of Belize and I think shipping is way too expensive. I guess I'm just scared to start. 😁
@@MadebyDawn23 Thanks for responding Dawn,It is something I'd like to do in the future.I learnt about making my own sketcbooks by watching a couple of artists I follow here on you tube and they also have made videos of making their own paints as well. Have you made videos on your own channel of you making your paints and sketchbooks?.There is a real surge of intrest in handmade watercolours,Etsy seems to be the place to sell them.Maybe think about setting up on etsy. Paints made by artists seem to becoming really popular which is great.
This sounds like a gorgeous palette - I've written it down in my sketchbook and will give it a try. Thanks Dawn!
Wondering if you have tried Lefranc & Bourgeois Flashe Vinyl Paints ? Would love to see how you might use them as they are another very high quality paint and might suit you work. They are beautiful to work with and dry to a velvety matt finish. Cheers Judy
I haven't! They sound intriguing. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt the link to these paints in Jacksons is www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/lefranc-bourgeois-flashe-vinyl-acrylic-paint
Unfortunately Jacksons wont ship this product here to Australia. I think because of brexit.
Also noticed that Golden acrylics are now making a flat matte which I would love to see a review of if you are interested in doing .The paint is called GOLDEN : SOFLAT : MATTE ACRYLIC PAINT www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/golden-soflat-matte-acrylic-paint
wow I just looked up this book on US amazon and it's unavailable, but going for $890 in secondary market. You got a great deal
What?! I'm rich! ;) Seriously though - why is it so expensive on Amazon?!
Thanks for sharing your favourites with us! I can't wait to see your videos on how you curate your palette in the future, will definitely stay tuned hehe!! And don't apologise about not doing more artwork videos ☹ Whichever content, it's your choice and I will support you ❤
That's such a kind thing to say and lovely to hear - thanks Angelea! 🖤
did the ds primatek survive being put in a pan?
I haven't put them in there yet! I'll be filming the video this week, so they're all going into the pans then!
If It's useful to hear from someone else, I have put Green Apatite and Jadeite in pans and they still rewet easily. I was concerned they wouldn't. I also bought Daniel Smith's watercolor stick forms of Sodalite, Piemontite, Serpentine and Hematite. A steal at $8.74 per stick which equals about 3 full pans worth of paint! I sliced off pieces and put them in pans. They rewet very well, too. I just put a few drops of water in the pan and then place the slices into them. I slide the slices around a bit so it rubs off some paint off the bottom into the water to "glue" the pieces in. I've bought a bunch of their other colors in the watercolor sticks, too, and am thrilled I can get so much paint for a great price compared to their tubes.
