Might be bit of a stretch but in the mission you have to board a ship to steal an artifact if you do the persuasion check on the first guard who stops you. You can turn around and drop down into an area with shallow water and garbage, there’s a non hostile one-eyed alien crawling around in it. A reference to the trash compactor scene in A New Hope
Yeah there's several Star Wars references so it's not a very far stretch tbh. xD there's a round space station you can board that has a bit of a dark theme to it...and there's a maintenance npc that says "I wonder why they built only one ventilation shaft.....It's big enough to fly a ship into." The person in charge of that station is wearing a black hood and he just laughs menacingly when you try to interact with him.
In the Vangaurd quest line when you are supposed to tell the robot Kaizer a code phrase, one of the optional dialogue choices is "Bah Weep Graaagnah Wheep Ni Ni Bong" which is the "Universal Greeting" from The Transformers: The Movie (1986).
I only saw this one yesterday and laughed a lot. Seriously wanted to pick it in the dialog options but wimped out and actually chose the password. "Don't touch that dial"
There’s a easter egg about the mantis quest you can get. Once you make your way into the layer of the “mantis”. The foundation is very similar to the bat cave. The armor/spacesuit is located in the center of the foundation in each resembles Batman’s suit/armor. I found it to be quite interesting
the mantis could very well also be a sly reference to the silver shroud from fallout. in universe heroic figure that the player character takes the mantle of, and has recognition from the local flavor of criminals.
The portrait next to Niel Armstrong's is Yuri Gagarian, aka the first human in space & first person to complete an orbit of the earth. Another possible Easter Egg is if you go to the Eridani star system. If you travel to the 3rd planet in the system, there is a massive amount of space station debris/wreckage in orbit, despite there being almost no facilities on the surface. Thing is, Eridani III was in Babylon 5 and was the planet the eponymous space station orbited, so I don't think the space station parts floating around is a coincidence. Also, Eridani II also exists & is a habitable Earth-like planet, and the second planet in the Epsilon Eridani system was also a habitable, Earth-like planet in the Halo universe known as Reach... Also, not sure if it counts as an Easter Egg, per se, but if you choose the "Kid Stuff" trait, your character's parents are voiced by Nana Visitor & Tim Russ... AKA Major Kira Nerys from Star Trek Deep Space Nine & Commander Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager.
I also heard a Star Trek podcast that claimed (I think it was) Eridani III as Planet Vulcan. I don't recall the details but it has some very similar traits/ looks or something? Oh and the entire ECS Constance quest is a dead ringer for ST.
The old baseball decoration is absolutely a reference to Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko's from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" desk decoration. It even looks like it.
Nah, that's how fans and collectors store them for display if they catch them during a game, especially if they get them autographed too. Sisco didn't have his covered, just on a little stand because he used to like to paw it a lot during the show.
There's a quest you can do that involves clones and at one point you can find a cloning tube with a post-it note stating that "clone Gary_23 has been transferred to facility V-108" and is dated as year 2277
Considering that Starfield is a multiverse spanning story game, there's a non 0% chance that one of the universes, that Starferer ends up in, is the Fallout universe. @@kuatojones6950
In The Mantis quest I immediately thought of the show Fringe, a sci-fi show about alternate universes. In Fringe's main characters travel to the alternate universe they find out that their version of Batman was replaced by a hero called the Mantis after a 1990's series "The Death of Batman". & since the Mantis in game is clearly supposed to be it's version of Batman I immediately made the connection. Although Fringe is an old show at this point so I thought it was a coincidence at first until I got further in the story & found out it's also about alternate universes! Guess I'm not the only one who loved & remembered that show xP
Grandma is supposedly a reference to Skyrim grandma, a real player. Also for completing the Rangers questline you get a gun called the Justifier which I imagine is a reference to Justified as it is a Marshall that gives it to you.
i found two Stephen King references in the Lock on Suvarov - 1st is in the Sorting area up on top of one of the rooms is a note saying "we need bigger cuffs for prisoner JC#1932, this guy's huge" a reference to King's Green Mile JC being John Coffey and 1932 being the year the BOOK was set - 2nd is located in one of the cells - there is a poster on the wall that looks to be covering up a series of cracks along with a hammer laying on the floor, a nod to King's Shawshank Redemtion where Dufresne digs out of the cell with a rock hammer
Just like how you found lotion and tissues in a locker, I found a syringe and a bottle of pills next to each other in a locker. I also came across another movie reference while doing a mission where I had to investigate a unknown mysterious ship that couldn't be contacted with through coms. They said they tried communicating through lights and sound which they seen in a movie. That is clearly a reference to Close encounters of the 3rd kind.
The books on the ES6 easter egg there, if they don't fall over it will have the first two leaning and the 3rd straight up thus "Scroll VI". So yes it is a subtle nod to that. There is also a guard in the prison mission for the Crimson Fleet, where he is dead and there is a metal rod with a fork on the end in his knee. Definitely a fun one there. On the planet with Paradiso, there's an outpost in the north. In this outpost you will see a vault door with the number "101" on it. A bit to the east of that location you will see an abandoned mine with another door that has "76" on it. By both you'll find a bottle of soda with 4 bottle caps. There's another reference where there's an SSNN reporter with the same name as the Dead Rising one, wearing a similar jacket. He will mention how he used to be on a planet with an outbreak that made people eat each other....or at least that he remembers. On a desert planet, there's a giant fossilized egg near a science outpost that looks awefully similar to the Jurrasic Park's first movie science lab. As well the planet has T-Rex looking aliens too and there are Brachio looking ones that when you go close enough you'll get a tune similar to the famous JP one. Aboard the abandoned armory starship that ran into power issues and lost it's gravity functions, there is a fan with an old man's body stuck in it. At the bottom of that shaft is a chocolate bar with a golden W on it. Clearly a Wonka reference there. There was a volleyball with a face on it on Paradiso too. Pretty sure it's the same Wilson face but I'm not too familiar to say for certain, some kinda easter egg though. The "that was my sandwhich" line is from Fast and the Furious 2 I believe it was. He takes the guy's sandwhich and takes a bite out of it then insults em for it being a bad tasting sandwhich. But the guy says that exact line. Not sure if that's specifically from it's referencing, but the guy looks like the one he called "Fabio" in a way so it's likely it. But yeah those were some I found as well xD there are so so many out there. Oh, and a fun one to find is a toy of a skeleton on a horse, when you put it on a shelf next to a desk globe, the head of the skeleton catches on fire. Ghost Rider anyone xP
In the story mission you go to a lab that has 2 realities, one where the lab is normal and one where the lab is destroyed and full of creatures! I believe this is a reference to stranger things, the destroyed world being the upside down, also at the end of the mission you will go into a room Where a high powered laser is being shot at a wall that you have to turn off, again almost confirming that it is a reference to stranger things, you also missed the crucible it’s in the Cherbourg system (don’t know if that’s the correct spelling) where you can meet ghengis khan, Franklin’s Roosevelt and a few other famous historical figures
The Gary Easter egg has a 2nd part. If you go to the facility of clones there are some large glass tubes on the 2nd floor. Next to the tubes is a note that says Gary, year 2277 and that he has been moved to vault 108
In the Cydona mines on Mars if you speak to the robot that is broken on the lowest floor where the miners one of his voice lines say "There's no doom in this quake..."
So someone at Eurogamer WAS actually playing Starfield! I was getting worried when their ""What we've been playing" feature has been leaving it out for the past 3 weeks! I always love the video teams videos, but elsewhere on the site this game has been getting some really weird feeling coverage.
Many uk outlets didn't get access to Starfield as early as other reviewers did, so they've not had as much time with it. Think the site review only went up 2 days ago.
You forgot one movie reference, a direct reference actually, not much a easter egg but a cool one, ECS Constant captain says at some point they even tried a "show of lights" they saw in an old movie (close encounters of the third kind) while trying to comunicate with the civilazation of Porrima II not knowing they were also human
The Terrormorph thing is genuinely one of my favourite curiosities in this game. And then there's the whole Dishonored 2 homage... it's far into the main quest, so I don't want to say too much, but they basically made an equivalent of A Crack In The Slab, the mission where you get the Timepiece and jump between different planes/timelines in the same building. Also, found a Prey reference (I think): a mug that says "Contains coffee. Maybe." (Funnily enough, at NASA.)
There are signs in various places in the galaxy that say, "Blue Harvest" on them. That was the working name for when Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi was being filmed. :)
The Londinium easter egg you claim is Halo... Well I thought that was a Starship Troopers reference, in fact that whole UC induction was very on point for Starship Troopers.
Granted yes it’s in the game but that’s also a real planet in that system. Not saying it’s not cool though I love that! Can’t wait for a mod that add noble team as companions and I bet that’s where you have to go and pick them up
I wouldn’t consider it an Easter egg, but it was awesome to see them bring back an iconic voice actor from new vegas to play the bartender at the Rock in Akilla City
The scroll holder could just be reference to the signing the two parties did after tons of death from war. They talk about it in the vanguard/uc plot show room with the button lights
The lack of DOOM references so far in a Bethesda game that actually lets you go to Mars is currently a huge let-down, but I'm dead certain that they're there somewhere
There’s a Skyrim painting in the Infinity LTD building when you enter the lobby for the final big Ryujin mission. It’s a little sketchy looking but it’s def a snowy tundra scene with a dragon flying in the distance.
Well, in addition to the ones listed, there's a few more: - Space Shanties! - Epsilon III (Reach) - Earth landmarks - Star Wars! (POSTERS!?!?!) - Terminator Judgment Day (Ah crap, here we go again - Sam Coe) - Deathclaw = Terrormorph Any others I missed?
Not sure this count as an easter egg. In Futurama ep. 81 "The Duh-Vinci Code" at 9:25 to 9:41 an octopus holding up pistols like in the skill, ballistic rank 4.
In one of the main missions for Walter ya have to go to a rich collectors ship and steal one of the artifacts in one of his displays in the main room when you talk to him you'll find Sputnik on display
Surprised y'all didn't miss Cora Coe's shirt, "The Silence of Sand" and it has two suns over a desert on it. Reference to one of the most iconic scenes in Star Wars.
It might be a bit of a stretch, but the name of the planet on which New Atlantis is located is Jemison, very similar to the name of the player character, Commander Jameson, in the 1984 space exploration game Elite, a legendary game that in many ways is a direct ancestor to Starfield.
pretty sure its a reference to astronaut Mae Carol Jemison, the first african-american woman in space; all the planets and moons in alpha centauri are named for astronauts, i mean hell one is called Gagarin
On Paradiso, the lost and found mission has several movie easter eggs in the 'found' section, including a sapphire necklace found at the bottom of the ocean and a ring found after a volcanic eruption.
Here's another TV reference: If you travel to Reliant Medical in Neon and approach Dr Joseph Manning, he greets you with the line "Please state the nature of the medical emergency", a line famously attributed to The Doctor from Star Trek Voyager.
SYSTEM NAMES. There are many that reference scientists, or authors. Namely, (Robert A) Heinlein, (Carl) Sagan, (Stephen) Hawking, Hyugens, Lutyens, (Isaac) Newton, Copernicus, Rutherford, (Jules) Verne, and so on.
Obviously the mantis quest is referencing to the bat cave but I was thinking and it might be a stretch but I think it has two meaning. The second being a reference to manta man from fallout comics book. Crime fighting mantis. Coincidence?
It's from the TV show Fringe, which is about parallel universes: "Other changes exist in the parallel universe's popular culture; Eric Stoltz stars in Back to the Future, the musical Dogs has replaced Cats as the longest running Broadway musical, the Sherlock Holmes books were never written, and many comic book characters are different or do not exist such as Green Lantern being Red Lantern and Batman being the Mantis." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythology_of_Fringe
in the game there's the background "long hauler" and the space trucker's outfit. If you scroll all the preset characters in the beginning you can find who seems to be Jack Burton from Big trouble in Little China.
I am actually shocked you missed one of the biggest ones! That the UC and Fleet reference starship troopers in two lines “everyone fights no one quits if you dont do your job I’ll kill you myself, welcome to the fleet” and “service guarantees citizenship” and the whole mantis quest is basically Batman lol
That's my sandwich, aww man might be the best random line in a bethesda game. But, I'm here to say that I was present at two of the recording moments. The Easy Money shot and the Explorer one. Fun times.
The NASA cup in the Europium might be a reference to "2010: The Year We Make Contact". The moon Europa being center stage, in the movie. And Europium being found in stars.
There's a bunch of videos already, but the reference to the spam calls about your Car's Extended Warranty is a good one. Also the Sea Shanty Easter egg too.
I picked up a weapon with a custom skin, on the skin is wrote "No Gods, No Masters", I think it was from a chest on the first mission but I can't quite remember, but it's a reference from New Vegas
Ive found three Star Trek voice actors in game so far. If you have the perk Kid Stuff your parents are voiced by Nana Visitor (Major Kira from Star Trek Deep Space nine) and Tim Russ (Tuvok From Star Trek Voyager and Picard) and Walter Stroud is voiced by Armin Shimerman (Quark from Star Trek Deep Space Nine)
Did the gun called The Regulator that looks just like the pistol from Fallout New Vegas called that gun that was a reference to the Blade Runner gun also there's a nirnroot looking plant in the game
The doctor on Neon will, from time to time, say "State the Nature of Your Medical Emergency" which is a direct quote from Voyager's emergency medical hologram
The Sixth Circle feels like a little nod to the Sixth House of Morrowind. The bar is where the red devils hang out and the Sixth House was Dagoth Ur and his daedra
There was a reference to Transformers in the quest to retrieve Kaiser, when he asks for the password there is the option to say the iconic universal greeting
Here’s one for you. In the city of Neon if you head tomthe Reliant Medical room theres a chance that physician theres will say “Please state the nature of the medical emergency.” Anyone who has watch Star Trek Voyager will know that as the greeting of the ship’s EMH, emergency medical hologram, AKA The Doctor.
You forgot about the Annoying Fan, a direct reference to the Adoring Fan from Oblivion. He even has some of the same lines and is voiced by the same voice actor.
I found a second "Scroll Holder" in an Eclipse Base, the one were you can get a free ship that lands in that base. In one closed up room are alot of Antiques from Earth, and there also is a Scroll Holder like the one seen in this Video. ^^ And... it is said there is a random spawning cave on earth (I couldn't find it yet) which should have a very heavy easteregg in it. But because the chances to find that special Cave are very low, you will have to search ALOT and that needs also ALOT of Time as you can think.
There's an aid item called Reconstim which is the same shape and design as the drugs packaging you see dotted around in Minority Report and see Tom Cruise holding and using throughout. It's pretty unique packaging that I havent seen elsewhere
You know modders are gonna make Halo armor for this game. Also, The Colander unmarked mission is a bunch of sci-fi horrror reference rolled into one. Referencing both Alien and Dead Space and also Among Us, which was itself partly inspired by The Thing.
I don't know if it's a coincidence or an actual Easter egg but there's an outpost called fracking outpost which fracking is a word they use in battlestar galactica just a penny for your thoughts
and also looks like the weapons seen in Starship troopers too and the creatures climbing over the wall looks like the Arachnids in movie over taking that base before the giant beetle attacks in the Halo ref there he does look a lot like Master Chief,
Cant remember which one it was but in one military outpost I found a tape measure in a shower suggesting someone was having a little richard measuring competition 😅
the NASA mug can be found in the NASA base on Earth... and could be found MANY of them. Also, have u seen Cora's shirt? is a desert landscape with two Suns at dawn.. That remembers me a movie
Tha extinct canine easter egg is a reference to Cowboy Bebop where dogs are damn near extinct, and hardly anyone has seen them much less own them. So when Ein the corgi joins them, it's a big deal. Man, earth a dustbowl and dogs extinct; the future's bleak.
For those that don't know, the sweet roll easter egg is a reference to a jailer in skingrad's prison in Oblivion: "I'll buy sweetrolls from Salmo the Baker ang day. Once, I was carrying a sweetroll when three thugs attacked me¥So, I took the sweetroll." But still an Easter egg non the less
There's a clonelab that has a plate with some info about gary on it, so there is at least one gary out there. There's also the xsomething-interloper, which is a more direct reference to alien. You'll find that one on the stranded ship in the schroedinger system, next to Kryx.
There's a news report I heard about a bounty hunter firing into a crowd on Cydonia and only hitting his target. He was released after police questioning. I think it's a blade runner reference.
So probably another coincidence but if you swap out Sam Coe for Sarah he calls her big boss which is a little funny if you consider he character looks a lot like the old voice actor for Snake from the Metal Gear Series.
I found an Easter Egg for the 1990's TV Show Walker, Texas Rangers staring Chuck Norris... Inside the Ranger's HQ THE ROCK on Cheyenne, there is a mission on the Mission Board called "ONE RIOT, ONE RANGER" that is also the name of the Walker, Texas Ranger Season One Episode One and Two.
Might be bit of a stretch but in the mission you have to board a ship to steal an artifact if you do the persuasion check on the first guard who stops you.
The wagonTrain III starship looks a bit like Battlestar Galactica which was envisioned as "Wagon train in space" by it's creator. So there's that one.
Finally, I'm like 200hrs in and have only seen a handful of bugs, exploits, but no easter eggs.
Well, in addition to the ones listed, there's a few more:
- Space Shanties!
- Epsilon III (Reach)
- Earth landmarks
- Star Wars! (POSTERS!?!?!)
- Terminator Judgment Day (Ah crap, here we go again - Sam Coe)
- Deathclaw = Terrormorph
Any others I missed?
I came here to point out Delvin Mallory, D-Block Secrion 01 Prisoner List. D-01-119. Nice find!
Not sure this count as an easter egg. In Futurama ep. 81 "The Duh-Vinci Code" at 9:25 to 9:41 an octopus holding up pistols like in the skill, ballistic rank 4.
Great video! I also really liked your narration of the show "Planet Earth"!!! ...I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself, cheers!
In one of the main missions for Walter ya have to go to a rich collectors ship and steal one of the artifacts in one of his displays in the main room when you talk to him you'll find Sputnik on display
My favorite one was the lady that calls you Carl when you first find her in a voice similar to catalina from San Andreas
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sol Symphony is a double reference to both John Williams & Gustav Holst. The conductor behind The Planets
If you have “child’s play” as a perk, when you visit your parents are go into your old bedroom, there’s a bottle of lotion under the bed
Surprised y'all didn't miss Cora Coe's shirt, "The Silence of Sand" and it has two suns over a desert on it. Reference to one of the most iconic scenes in Star Wars.
Did miss*
It might be a bit of a stretch, but the name of the planet on which New Atlantis is located is Jemison, very similar to the name of the player character, Commander Jameson, in the 1984 space exploration game Elite, a legendary game that in many ways is a direct ancestor to Starfield.
pretty sure its a reference to astronaut Mae Carol Jemison, the first african-american woman in space; all the planets and moons in alpha centauri are named for astronauts, i mean hell one is called Gagarin
There is a starship called the Fontuna you need to find at some point. Bib Fontuna is one of Jabba The Hutt’s lackeys in Star Wars.
I have an outpost in the Zelazney system called Amber.
Obviously the mantis quest is referencing to the bat cave but I was thinking and it might be a stretch but I think it has two meaning. The second being a reference to manta man from fallout comics book. Crime fighting mantis. Coincidence?
It's from the TV show Fringe, which is about parallel universes:
"Other changes exist in the parallel universe's popular culture; Eric Stoltz stars in Back to the Future, the musical Dogs has replaced Cats as the longest running Broadway musical, the Sherlock Holmes books were never written, and many comic book characters are different or do not exist such as Green Lantern being Red Lantern and Batman being the Mantis."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythology_of_Fringe
The reliant doctor on Neon also says "Please state the nature of your medical emergency" Which is an obvious star trek reference.
in the game there's the background "long hauler" and the space trucker's outfit.
Fun times.
Also, when you do the quest on the planet with the reformed prisoners, the alien crabs look a lot like mudcrabs
Kid: “mom... what’s tenuous mean?” Mom: “here; watch this.....”
I've seen references to Star Trek Voyager, Babylon 5, Transformers (1986) and Battletech. Good times.
the mechs are clear proof of a battletech one lol hell they even look like one of the mechs from that universes games
Just look at Vasco the robot...
Another Halo Easter Egg is that the Planet Eridani II is a replica to Reach from the Halo Series in its planetary design.
The planet Eridani II is Reach from Halo
In the same room as the Calypso I believe there is also a model of the USS Constitution.😊
I’m pretty sure the terra morph mission is about starship troopers
I picked up a weapon with a custom skin, on the skin is wrote "No Gods, No Masters", I think it was from a chest on the first mission but I can't quite remember, but it's a reference from New Vegas
I got that gun too. I thought it was a regular skin for those guns. Dunno what I ever did with it.
Also the adoring fan is the same adoring fan that is in oblivion
17:26 I WAS RIGHT!!! It is the CALYPSO! WOOT!!!
Don't forget the Watch Case in YOUR room in the Lodge
Did the gun called The Regulator that looks just like the pistol from Fallout New Vegas called that gun that was a reference to the Blade Runner gun also there's a nirnroot looking plant in the game
The doctor on Neon will, from time to time, say "State the Nature of Your Medical Emergency" which is a direct quote from Voyager's emergency medical hologram
The Sixth Circle feels like a little nod to the Sixth House of Morrowind. The bar is where the red devils hang out and the Sixth House was Dagoth Ur and his daedra
To add to the Office Space easter egg, .001 is the amount they were skimming.
There was a reference to Transformers in the quest to retrieve Kaiser, when he asks for the password there is the option to say the iconic universal greeting
my deepest respects and condolences to MR. Hay
Kreet stalkers had me scared for the first 20 mins of my play thru 😂
And... it is said there is a random spawning cave on earth (I couldn't find it yet) which should have a very heavy easteregg in it.
Yes!
Scroll/book combo did spawn for me.
You know modders are gonna make Halo armor for this game.
Also, The Colander unmarked mission is a bunch of sci-fi horrror reference rolled into one. Referencing both Alien and Dead Space and also Among Us, which was itself partly inspired by The Thing.
I'm pretty sure Vasco says the names, Rockatansky, Furiosa and Imperator :)
I don't know if it's a coincidence or an actual Easter egg but there's an outpost called fracking outpost which fracking is a word they use in battlestar galactica just a penny for your thoughts
I have seen the scroll at the lodge on at least one character. Never checked with others but i will now lol
You forgot a Halo reference. Eridani system, where Reach is said to be located in. It's in the bottom left corner on the star map.
and also looks like the weapons seen in Starship troopers too and the creatures climbing over the wall looks like the Arachnids in movie over taking that base before the giant beetle attacks in the Halo ref there he does look a lot like Master Chief,
Cant remember which one it was but in one military outpost I found a tape measure in a shower suggesting someone was having a little richard measuring competition 😅
There is a base ball display in the Frontier above your bed. That is a reference to the base ball field from Fallout 4 called Diamond City
the NASA mug can be found in the NASA base on Earth... and could be found MANY of them.
Also, have u seen Cora's shirt? is a desert landscape with two Suns at dawn.. That remembers me a movie
There is a poster on one of the planets called The Outpost it looks like the Flood or the Necromorph attacking a base.
A note about the Arrow to the knee icon, the arrowhead resembles the steel arrows from Skyrim too.
My worst fear come true, space faring Gary's.
Found and love the nasa mug
Tha extinct canine easter egg is a reference to Cowboy Bebop where dogs are damn near extinct, and hardly anyone has seen them much less own them. So when Ein the corgi joins them, it's a big deal. Man, earth a dustbowl and dogs extinct; the future's bleak.
The 1st one was genius ngl
For those that don't know, the sweet roll easter egg is a reference to a jailer in skingrad's prison in Oblivion:
"I'll buy sweetrolls from Salmo the Baker ang
day. Once, I was carrying a sweetroll when
three thugs attacked me¥So, I took the
sweetroll."
But still an Easter egg non the less
There's a clonelab that has a plate with some info about gary on it, so there is at least one gary out there.
There's also the xsomething-interloper, which is a more direct reference to alien.
You'll find that one on the stranded ship in the schroedinger system, next to Kryx.
Good job on the video bro niiice 👏👏👏
There's a news report I heard about a bounty hunter firing into a crowd on Cydonia and only hitting his target. He was released after police questioning. I think it's a blade runner reference.
Considering Bethesda’s fondness for referencing Blade runner in fallout it’s not too far fetched
So probably another coincidence but if you swap out Sam Coe for Sarah he calls her big boss which is a little funny if you consider he character looks a lot like the old voice actor for Snake from the Metal Gear Series.
I think the Halo reference is even more specific. The whole atmosphere looks like the Floodgate level in Halo 3
You forgot the vanguard is just the mobile infantry from starship troopers. Service guarantees citizenship
