His rendition of “I won’t send roses” from “Mack and Mabel” is one of the most tear-jerking moments in musical history. His cynical but warm, heartfelt explanation to Mabel is one of the most iconic in any stage musical.

I saw Barbara cook in her 80’s in Sondheim on Sondheim. TWICE. Nothing I’ve ever heard or ever will hear will come close to the sheer Beauty of Her Voice, phrasing and emotional truth.

Robert Preston was so wonderful. He could play any role… from Harold Hill to
Carol Todd to Michael Finnegan (one of my favorites) I was 20 when he died and I remember feeling very badly. After watching this I agree with Bernadette. Time doesn't heal everything, he's still missed. Guess thats the real tribute.

How lovely to see dazzling Broadway legend Mary Martin pay tribute to Robert Preston and perform a song from "I Do I Do" in which they co-starred. Miss Martin looks terrific. Her voice and delivery are still impressive. Broadway lost some of its luster when these two giants left us. Boynton41, thank you for sharing this priceless video.

What a great tribute to a great man. Mary Martin 20?years after doing I Do I Do sounds even better than ever. Barbara Cook nails everything she sings, particularly her signature song. Bernadette Peters sounded very emotional in her delivery. Robert Preston had a positive effect on every person he worked with.

I can also recommend an obscure but wonderful Preston movie called Island of Love. Also starring Tony Randall, it’s a light-hearted farce that I saw on a cruise ship going to Bermuda when I was 7 in 1960. Dating myself I know. But I watched it four times one rainy afternoon and it’s just a pleasure to watch.

  • @TheAureliac

The problem with Tony tributes is that they cannot showcase the unique talent we've lost. Seeing other people perform his iconic roles does not do him justice. This is not a critique of any particular tribute: it's simply a fact that without seeing the performer, we cannot judge how much we've truly lost.

He deserved this tribute leaded by Dame Angela Lansbury with the greats Mary Martin,Barbara Cook and Bernadette Peters..Preston didnt win the Oscar but wan two Tony awards for Music Man(Cook wan too) and Ido I do(Martin didnt win for it). This homage to the great Robert Preston(1917-87) was magnificent and is very good to see al these ladies together. But to coment more about Peters than about Martin,Dame Angela and Cook isnt good. There was a list made in 2012 of the 25 more important ladies in the Broadway Musicals. These four were among the 10 fist.Dame Angela was 3rd,Peters 5th,Martin 6th and Cook 10th but if I could chose I would have put in this order:Martin,Lansbury,Cook and Peters. If I could do the list of the ten more important Broadway musical men Robert Preston would have been among the ten first. Harold Hill,Toddy, the husband of I do I do.What a grea performer he was!!!

I think the Prestons and Mary Martin and her husband were close friends through the years. Barbara Cook was talented and won the role of Marion in Preston's signature movie, Music Man, Bernadette had a true love/infatuation for RP (age and circumstances mirrored those of Mack and Mabel) and Landsbury was an early leading lady in film.
But RP was his wife were extremely private people. Mary Martin (and her husband) were there after Preston had his affair (w Ulla Sallert, 'Benjamin Franklin in Paris' costar). The Prestons separated (after 'Music Man' and before 'I Do, I Do'). Mary Martin and her husband were there for them both during this time. This may explain the order.

Sara Vazzana Sorry Sara- you're not even close- ever hear of an Oscar winning actress named ' Shirley Jones' ? She was "Marian the Librarian" in the movie. (Currently starting a concert version tour of TMM as "Mrs. Paroo" -with Patrick /her son/playing "Harold Hill"He met Preston during the filming of TMM).The Broadway Legend "Miss Barbara Cook" was only in the original stage version.

Sara Vazzana Got another FLASH for ya- Preston had a LOT of affairs over the course of his 40+ year marriage. The longest & most intense being with 'THE' Peggy Lee, which lasted (on & off) from the early 50's into the early 70's. See both her autobio and the most recent biography of her done by Peter Richmond.

Sort of sad that the focus of the comments is on Bernadette Peters. Yes, she's been good for a long time. BUT, seeming not to know Angela Lansbury (5-time Tony winner...check out Mame, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy), Mary Martin (Tony Awards for Peter Pan, South Pacific, The Sound of Music) and Barbara Cook's (Tony for The Music Man) contributions to the theatre is sad, but redeemable. Search their works...they're all of them Kennedy Center Honors recipients.

Of course, no mention was made of three of Preston's flop musicals--despite his usual, charismatic performances--"Ben Franklin in Paris," "The Prince of Grand Street" and "We Take the Town!" in which he performed the role of Mexican outlaw/revolutionary, Pancho Villa. The real shame, however, is that he didn't live long enough to reprise the role of Toddy in "Victor/Victoria" on stage!

First, to be clear, I loved the tribute & all of the performances from these GREAT ladies of the stage! NO ONE is more worthy of such an outpouring of love than Mr. Robert Preston. But in the description of this video, just below the title, it says Ms. Martin performs "My Cup Runneth Over"... a beautiful song that I ADORE!!! But sadly, Ms Martin did NOT perform THAT song! It was the only disappointment relating to this video, but a BIG disappointment nonetheless. Will those who clearly loved Mr. Preston enough to post this beautiful video (which is in & of itself a loving tribute of your own)... plz correct the title of the beautiful song performed by Ms. Martin? Thank U most kindly. 💕
