It'd become possible for incidental checks to happen but neither side could deliberately check or move into check based on the previous board state. It's the kind of mod that wouldn't make any sense OTB but would be pretty easy to implement online (you'd see if your opponent locked in their move based on their clock ticking down).

The king is too powerful and theres nothing you can do to stop it if checkmate isnt a threat. The game should be about using all your pieces to create a safe path. Moving your king into check is still illegal like in normal chess. As you can see in the video, a rook/queen controlling the file above the king prevents him from advancing. If you use a piece to block the vision (again, like Simp did), your king can advance

Meanwhile your opponent can race their king across the board. If both players get trapped in checkmate, you would be forced to move, so someone will eventually need to let the other player out of check in order to win. I wouldn’t be so much a “race” as a stratigic play to the other side. Also, in this version there is no value in check mating a king , the only win consdtion is having your king on the back rank.

Allowing checks makes the whole race completely not a thing, it just becomes regular chess and about trying to mate your opponent's king like normal.

if he doesnt move back the rook, the king cannot be advanced because it will be a check. So he has to hide the king by a rook
