Isai Wins Smash 64 Super Major 20 Years Into His Competitive Career
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In today's video I am talking about Isai's historic run at Super Smash Con 2023, one of the most stacked 64 tournaments to date. What makes this win more impressive is that Isai started his competitive 64 career in 2003 at least so this makes this a win about 20 years into his competitive career which is an extremely rare feat esports. I interviewed Wizzrobe on this topic since he is a top 64 player and is more knowledgeable on the game.

Smart move to get Wizzy on. Nothing wrong with acknowledging what isn’t your expertise and that allows you the opportunity to add more value to your content.
Yeah but he should make an alternate version of this video where he just makes stuff up.
Super sick that you're covering this stellar run despite not being super knowledgeable about 64! Seeing you and wizzy chat was super fun. All the best to you :)
Awesome to see you and Wizzrobe talking about the legendary player that is Isai
Isai is what people try to be when attempting the quiet and mysterious character.
Isai the GOAT of Smash 64. Always fascinating when he plays/discussed.
Larry: "Hey guys, I have with me Wizzrobe."
Wizzrobe: "🗿"
He embodies the moai
Chama
I believe Isai doesn't go serious on every tournament he goes because he wants to keep that enjoyment and magic of playing something u love. Not turn it into a job or "I have to win" every time. He just a nice guy who wants to keep playing his favorite game with the same joy.
That is probably a factor in his longevity. He isn't stressed about trying to be #1. His whole motivation is that the game is fun for him, so he's always winning. He does seem to enjoy winning based on his player cam reactions over the years, but he doesn't really appear to be bothered by losing or his legacy being tarnished somehow. He also hasn't been vocal about his rankings that I've ever seen. He just doesn't seem to care about the trophies or accolades. He just wants to enjoy his favorite game.
I know I'm a year late but it's fair to say this for everything except this particular tournament. He's got a wife and kids and I wonder if it was to prove something to them, because that's the only time I've seen him pop off. And it was using pika, which he doesn't like, but admits it's the best character and the best chance of winning. Seems like he came to that tournament to say "I may not be as good as I once was, but I can be as good once as I ever was".
You gotta love Wizzy. "Yea no problem glad to be here 😑"
@madduxnagel6935 😂
We really need more content covering competitive smash 64 nowadays!
its coming soon
@@NeilOwnsU2 wait what!? really?
i found it crazy that isai's break the targets/board the platform times still hold up at the top to this day from the early 2000's and now he's winning majors at his late 30's, isai is the real champ, using the then underulitized falcon at melee, has went through mutiple generation's of smash and still does pretty well today
and i like how he doesnt go serious from evry tourney he's in, he just wants to enjoy his game and that's how i like about this guy, doesnt seemed too stress about it and he's humble too despite being a beast at his game xD
Isai would be a fascinating neuro-scan study. People like him seem to have a precognition ability that’s almost like using the Force
@@Tempusverum?????
Wizzy did great explaining everything. I think cuz i love 64 and the community so much I get really critical of anyone talking about the game so I'm glad you brought someone like wizzy on, great decision.
Thank you for making this content. Isai is a special player too me. I think nowadays players in Melee love to be big personalities because they stream and it's their income. But Isai is different from them. Although he doesn't play Melee anymore, I think he's still an interesting contrast. He's very unassuming and quiet. He just seemingly comes out of nowhere and wrecks house.
I also enjoyed hearing a modern take on Isai from Wizzrobe as for many years it became a meme that "only if he tried", but even Wizzrobe acknowledges that Isai is a bit of an enigma but can turn it on if he wants. It was also a joy hearing him note that Isai is proving a player can be successful even into a more advanced age. I'm just as old as Isai so it feels good to get acknowledgement that older players can still be a force.
Just wanna say I used to watch your channel all the time and the combo vids and stuff you made are amazing!
@@LarryLurr Thank you! It's nice to be remembered! I had fun making those videos over the years. Good memories.
@@LarryLurrwholesome
having grands playing in the background helps so much since even seeing this live i haven’t even come to terms with isai’s win.
as a 64 player i think Wizzrobe was the absolute best person to speak on this topic since practically every smasher is familiar with him
I love hearing Wizzy talk and as always Larry is an excellent host so this video is 🔥
This gigachad has been competing since the year I was born!
same!
Great video! Very insightful info a topic you usually don't hear about on youtube
Isai has played 64 longer than I've been alive
facts 👌😂
I was born in 2003 when he started competing
Wizzy: Sometimes Isai doesn't try as hard or plays secondaries so he doesn't get as good of results
Also Wizzy: was once 4-stocked by Isai's Luigi
*_PIVOT DOWN TILT_*
@@DorrieDudethat moment had me freaking out lmao
Wizzy also beat Isai's Luigi in the exact same set
One of the rare moments where Isai actually tried
He definitely wanted to since it was 20th anniversary
Was not expecting this kind of video. Hell yeah, good stuff!!
Great video, awesome to hear you guys chat about 64 and Isai's run! Thanks for the shout-out, Wizzy!
the fact that smash64 has a mysterious ‘sage in the mountains’ as wizzy put it had me laughing out loud lol, love how obscure smash64 is compared to the other competitive titles
Just heard that part and I agree, it's actually pretty damn sick.
Really great interview. I’m glad Wizzy brought up Josuke and differences between J and U version. Super Happy Isai won SSC
I've been trying to find the Josuke videos Wizzy mentioned, and I don't get anything... I wonder if any matches are still up anywhere
@@galactictornado8671same here, nothing on youtube😢
Very dope vid, wish 64 got more love!
I wish it was at EVO before Nintendo’s decision to no longer have Smash at EVO.
I do too!
Well, you need to play Smash Remix! That's definitelly the definition of love from the fans to Smash 64 lol
Really good interview actually. Thanks for sharing lots of 64 insight Wizzy.
The part about Jouske being a Sage in the mountains is so true. That dude is out there, and his Samus is a mastepiece.
Isai is one of coolest players ever. Glad he won!
I saw this one documentary when I was a kid. I think it was called insect wars. They had cameras inside this ant hill and in the ant colony there was these ants fighting to be queen. They would go around grabbing other ants and spraying them with their pheromones to make them docile and obedient. The ant that won was the one that was the most active, the most aggressive, it appeared the most lucid and like it had the most agency- this is what Isai’s pika reminds me of. He just makes the character look so ornery and alive
The age old meme of Isai not trying
Seldom does anything make a Melee oldhead happier than hearing Isai won a Smash tournament in 2023
This was a great video! A lot of good talking points and I appreciated the topic around older gamers in VGC. This is something I’ve thought about a lot lately
64 is worth playing, especially with Remix on the scene.
Glad to see you talk about 64. I feel like no one does
64 is mad underrated imo
@@kwaku7226 facts
agreed! i love this game by heart and yet still learning so much about the game :o@@kwaku7226
isai is like the other older fgc veterans like daigo, jwong, etc. still able to compete in their respective games at the top level as time goes, its actually very inspirational
"🗿Yeah no problem 🗿glad to be here 🗿" Wizzrobe 2023
don’t mock the Rod bro..
this comment took me out xD
64 content lets goooo

seriously!! thank you larry for making such an awesome 64 video and if you decide to do more please do!!
Darkhorse and Larry crossover would be great, I hope to see it
@@playstationarusu I'm here for it
I mean isai has won majors in 2005,2012 and now 2023 him and Larry’s longevity is unmatched
Honestly, Mango is getting pretty dang close to that milestone as well. Hbox, too.
Wizzy's face is like why the fuck am I here
🗿
wizzy is so knowledgeable about smash 64... amazing guest to have on with his gold mine and its amazing how he can draw parallels with his top competitor status in melee and ultimate too
thanks for the upload! smash 64 / remix needs more coverage
there are few things that i love more than seeing isai succeed
cool to see Smash talk in another scene. good video
The autism has paid off, Mashallah!
Cool video for sure, thanks for contributing to Smash history!
See guys Larry hasn’t hit his peak yet! 30s still young
6-0 in grand finals is insaneee
this guy is a legend - no doubt.
Never seen Wizzy talk so much lmao
Isai is the reason I got so deep into smash and I gotta say I was feeling alot of emotion watching him prove he's still the best
Edit: don't get hit ❤
i feel so bad for wizzy getting 4 stock with isai's luigi
I've been playing games on a daily basis for over 20 years still playing daily, in my opinion if you truly love something and have a true passion for it, and NOT just doing it for money or fame and whatever, but do it because have a true passion, then you'll keep on doing it, unless if of course something gets in the way like work or something, but otherwise keep doing it.
the whole smash community won when isai won tbh, especially coming from someone who watched the smash doc, so cool to see him pop off
This was a very interesting video. I seem to like videos that talk about a player's longevity in the Smash scene. They somehow carry a lot of weight. Either way, Isai's a legend. 👍
I think everybody knows Isai is the GOAT of 64, which is why he doesn't always try 100%, he doesn't have anything to prove. He's just having fun with the game, and sometimes that fun comes from winning like in this case.
Isai had the never give up attitude
This is probably the most wizzrobe has talked that entire year
Thank you I was hoping someone would do this!!!! Yay
Wizrobe : No problem glad to be here 😐
"He can tap into peak godlike skill when he wants" sounds like Mang0 for melee and Marss for ult
When they really want to be the best they can most of the time. Mang0 could've easily been number 1 this year if he didn't have such a bad mindset about getting screwed on the ranks. Isai just doesn't care about winning. Marss just had a slump straight up I think. I don't follow ultimate that hard, but I feel MKLeo is more comparable to the 2. MKLeo truly doesn't care that much anymore, but can win tournaments when his heart is in it. 100% in it
@Kylerulez666 that's facts MkLeo definitely had that dawg in em when he's feeling it!
Excellent video!!!!
Ive been playing games for over 22 years atleast and im still a competitive gamer, its just the experience.
Imagine if they had the bravado to run the tournament on Smash Remix
They had a smash remix side tournament on the same day. I think dark horse was streaming it.
@@666blazikenblaziken is my favorite pokemon since i played ruby as a child man
@@peeron6829 same here! It's such a wonderful design!
8:40 - The FGC has seen this already. We have dudes in their 40s still winning majors for new games.
This reminds me of the sweet and delicious #8 from LJS! 🐟 🍟 🐟 🍟 Great vid
This is great
Isai is amazing
I have an isai don't get hit shirt I bought in high school. My wife wears it as a pajama
Isai is my all time favorite smash player. Then Hbox and Mang0. But Larry's always up there too. You only ever hear good things about Larry. Great video!
Exactly how I'd picture wizzys room if I pictured wizzys room
yessir Larry Lurr for the people fr
THE GOD HIMSELF!!
NEEDS MORE RECOGNITION
Isai is kinda like LeBron if you think about it, the longevity is crazy
Isai when he's trying is the best gamer of all time, he easily could have won every event at SSC if he had tried in them (/s)
isai is the main anime character that gets talked too by the god that's secretly inside them who then 1000000x their power only when the god wants too
Well said, Wizzrobe.
isai is the most casual competitive smash player ever
He did what people always wanted him to do, he went tryhard, used his main, and he won seemingly pretty easy 😂
Smash 64 is actually my favorite. I also like the mod with the additional roster.
Oh yeah, Smash Remix!
Isai is like a wizard
If only we could have seen boom’s falcon vs isai’s Kirby this smash con
oh you gotta put ft. Wizzrobe in the title my guy
I feel like Wario would be in the conversation of possible GOATs as well. Or maybe I'm wrong.
Sick I enjoyed this
Great vid
Larry Lurr humble bragging he was a top player in four of the five Smash games
Around 0.58: Even if you are one of the best, don't ever call yourself that.
since you brought up the regional differences, I would like to point out that they BUFFED pikachu in the US version (and then the PAL version) and get this, they nerfed link in the US version. Want to know why link falls so fast during his recovery and why he's considered a terrible character? NTSC-U patch baby.
Yeah rly hope wizzy starts competing again, his falcon is probably my favorite lol
He is the only one I can think of who actually wins tournaments with Falcon besides Isai.
@@Quake2815Salt won a big regional this year against lloD in grands, but yeah, wizzy is the only falcon that comes to mind who’s a consistent threat to win any tournament he attends. hope to see more of him as his health improves
The Peruvian scene needs a shoutout, they arw the strongest overall scene but rarely get to teavel
*Dont get hit*
the smash 64 goat
Mans need to go start a family.
The best player of all time, if he wanted to
I don’t play or watch smash but Isai is one of my favorite pro gamers of all time.
He reminds me of like an anime character who can defeat anyone if he really wants to but doesn’t like to tap into his power because he doesn’t like to hurt others.
However when pissed off or he feels like it could destroy anyone
sick vid, put wizzy in the title and get more views lol
Isai is the type of dude that became a boomer at 16
*ppl play o.g. smash comp not just melee ???* that is badass.
And also amazing, i wish Smash Remix had the same level of popularity in tournaments like Brawl had with Project M by the way lol
Don't get hit
So he went gohan ssj2 😂
