Never did a swap but I did replace two new B&S engines on my 27 year old Snapper. Engines can be lots cheaper than mowers. The old Snapper deck has no rust... absolutely bullet proof.

In this day of high inflation, it makes sense to use good used equipment either engine/mower deck, ect. Right now I'm working on a project, putting a 25 horsepower V twin on an older Murry 40 inch that had a 12 horsepower that just wore out. It has a few challenges, but nothing I can't handle, like the exhaust. That's not too difficult. I will have duel exhaust when I'm finished

I think you forgot an important component of engine swap. While shaft diameter IS important, shaft length is more so. I discovered this when I put a Honda GCV160 on a Craftsman to replace a blown Tecumseh. It bolted up ok, but gave a very close shave because the shaft length on the Honda was longer.

Recently decided to do an engine replacement on my push mower. As you noted, new mower prices are very high, even for the most basic units. I loved my Craftsman Rear-Bagger 21" unit because the deck was very rugged and it performed well. The engine was getting really hard to start and after trying things like replacing the carburetor, I discovered that the spark plug was getting oil-fouled (rings or scoring most likely). Decided to go with a new predator 173cc engine so I could keep the original deck. The only issue I ran into was with the arbor for the blade (blade adapter). After searching out You Tube posts, I found one on this specific subject. Runs and functions great again. You are spot on about the feeling of accomplishment!

You know those properties with old trucks and mower sitting in tall grass? 1 in 10 of those guys actually fix stuff using this approach. The 9 other still roam suburban roads, scouring the curbside for more 'gold' they will 'rescue'.

I’ll usually do anything in my ability to repair and save one of those Tecumseh engines, even if that means rebuilding the entire thing. As long as the engine block itself is still in good condition, I can pretty much fix it. And if you look in the right places, you can still find replacement crankshaft, pistons, rods, and any other internal engine part because of how heavily mass produced those engines were.

I just did an ending swap on my personal mower. Had an old craftsman 917 self propelled rear wheel drive that the deck cracked, but motor was great. Found a Toro Personal Pace rear wheel drive at a yard sale with a bad motor for free. Both had the same Briggs motor and everything from mounts and cables and pulley lined up perfectly. I did have to use the blade from the Craftsman because of the bolt size. The now Toro, cuts better than it ever.

the engine sounds great 👍 I noticed a lot of surging at the first start but it did seem to get better 😀😀 another reason that the self propelled could be slow is that the drive belt is stretched & slipping on the pulley glad to see another good 👍 engine saved the deck cleaned up nicely 😃😀 job well done 👍 sir 👍

Lawn mower engine swaps are fun and not too hard. I am planning to replace a very nice 2009 Husqvarna garden tractor's mower deck with a completely different garden tractor brand deck. This is a little tricky but also a lot of fun. My Husqvarna tractor was given to me for free but it did not have a mower deck. So, I got a 1982 Craftsman deck for free (also in great shape) & once finished I will have a very nice garden tractor. Cheers.

Mine was a pain but was worth it. A Snapper walk behind for $15 but had a H A R D life. The gearbox was full of leaves and needed a pinion and bearings and grease. The engine was shot and it takes a LOT to kill a flathead. Bent crank to boot. Buddy saw guy gave me a wrecked Deere with a Kawasaki 6 horse. The swap was interesting. Briggs and Kawasaki are opposite about carbs and mufflers. Carb on the Snapper with the Kawa was fine but the muffler was next to the nylon chute to the bag. A 1 inch copper 'L' fastened to the muffler guard over the exhaust exit solved that. NO blade adapter but made one out of the blade clutch since the crank was smaller than the Briggs. Been several years and have done nothing to the Kawasaki (overhead valve) but change oil and air filters. Always starts 2nd pull and runs sweet. Mows like a rug and still has the DEERE sticker on the recoil to mess with people. I'd do it again for the better running but still like my old Briggs flatheads. BLESSINGS!

I always find when swapping them I put some grease on the blade adapter then slide it on. then if in the future you need to remove it its so much easier to get it off. You can make some really nice mowers out of a franken mower. I have one myself along with my toro a nice high wheeled yard man. worked out really well though it wasn't self propelled. did the same for my grandpa when he really wanted to keep a old 80's briggs engine and we found a really nice deck and i made it exactly how he wanted it. Hes like they dont make them how i want anymore. this was in the early 2000s and fixed everything up with an older deck his engine and he was happy. So yeah I think its a really good idea. plus a shame to waste a perfectly good engine or vice versa with a real good deck.

I engine swapped a used Honda GCV160 engine from a rotted out Honda IZY on to an Allen (now Toro) 221 hover mower deck which replaced a burned up 2 stroke Tecumseh engine. The cables were the worst part because the GCV engine is backward on a hover deck so when it is on a steep slope it doesn’t ingest it’s own engine oil, meaning the throttle and engine brake cables need to be twice the normal length.

Seeing as you had the self propel belt on the mower already, being able to swap the blade adapter over was ideal. If you're not able to, as long as the shaft length and adapter sits similarly to the original one, you can get away with a slightly different size belt. I've had to do that on a handful of occasions.
On a separate note, do you know what make/model your puller is? Mine doesn't have the little hat on the end of the screw part and makes it pretty difficult to keep the pointed tip on top of bolts. I'd love to have one with that end hat piece to be able to sit flush on the bolt head!

  • @v-g-z3689

A reason for doing an engine swap? Well, I can tell you.
Lets say a customer brings in a 2008 Toro Recycler mower with the very last generation 6.5 HP Tecumseh on it because it doesn´t start. Now the deck and rest of the mower aren´t looking to good, rust, wear, the usual. But apart from a gummed up carb the engine is fine... Now I wouldn't be in any way interested in the deck, but certainly in the engine. So, how do I make myself AND the customer happy? It´s easy. There is some random Briggs Quantum lying around which just happens to have the right shaft. Its not very old, not very new, quite worn out and shabby, but with a bit of work will at least start and run smooth. Also there are some Toro specific parts from a Quantum that threw a rod... I´ll be dammed, but I´d fix up that Tecumseh while it´s still on the deck and do a full rejuvenating job on it so that it runs excellent and is as clean as it was from the factory. Then I´ll rip it off there, clean the deck up as best as I could without investing any money, and get that old Quantum on there including the Toro specfic parts. Minimal investion in parts, just scramble together whatever is in the used stash. Clean it up, make sure it looks nice and runs well, no money invested except for a new gasket between the air filter and the carb so that the primer works and the engine starts on the first or second pull.
The customer doesn´t care about what kind of engine is on there as long as it doesn´t give him any trouble. I tell him the old engine couldn´t be repared anymore and therefore you did an engine swap. But it´s ok, he doesn´t have to pay much, it´s only xy bucks (the price of the carb and maintenance job on the Tecumseh you pulled off). Now the customer is happy because he has a running mower and it didn´t cost him much and you are happy because you got rid of that uninteresting, worn Briggs Quantum as well as some other parts noone needs AND you have a nice fully working last generation Tecumseh. Win-Win situation.
