    Great advice!
I love the idea of creating a scene with scents, even though that can be challenging to create. I love the scene in Perfume: Story of a Murderer where Grenouille creates a perfect copy of the most popular scent of the time, then tells Baldini that it's "not a good perfume" and procedes to change it to what he considers to be a "really good perfume" and when Baldini smells it he's blown away by a vision of an Italian garden in full bloom and a beautiful woman who smiles and leans in to Baldini and whispers "I love you" in his ear and kisses his cheek.

As someone who creates fragrances for a hobby, I cannot tell you how many times I have been guilty of this. Very often, I will start to create a fragrance with a central idea in mind (resinous tobacco for example) and everything will start out really good but then for whatever reason I say to myself, "Gee, let's see what this smells like" and it completely ruins everything. Knowing when to stop, meaning not getting carried away with adding oils, is something I'm still struggling with unfortunately.

Exactly. Went up in my 'loft lab' last night intent on a woody, leather fragrance. 15 minutes later I was back down the ladder coughing and spluttering, after (for reasons unknown to me) having added every oil I had ever bought to the beaker!

This is an amazing video....thank you. I have my studio set up in my garage....I am ready to start mixing and learning. I did a couple "recipes" I found online, which was fun to start with. But watching this video really helped me to take a step back and really imagine what I want to create that is unique. Of course, all this after I did my dilutions!

This is good advice and a common sense approach. I'm going to begin my first fragrance next week. Mine will be a cool temp classic masculine. I plan on starting by diluting the oils that need it, then build the base, heart and top separately and keep them separate. This will take awhile I'm sure, but once I accomplish all 3 and am satisfied, I'll begin test batches with different ratios of each pyramid.

That is a very solid plan of attack.

@@bkscents7050 It's the only way it makes sense to me on my first attempt. I can also "see" having pre-made accords ( e.g.. woods, ambers, patchouli's, etc, florals, citric, etc....) that I could build in advance and then experiment with ratios. THAT will take time to get good at, so until then, just building 3 accords for a complete fragrance will be my goal. I'm not interested in wasting materials or adding things for the sake of adding. Your 1000 scale for each accord is what made me "see" what I couldn't see before.

Pre-made accords are what I do. This way I don't have to recreate a certain "note" over and over. I pre make alot of them and store them in 30ml bottles, ready for use at an arms length away.

Great advices. Exactly what I would've needed like ten years ago. My first tries were so aweful and without any concept. I wish I kept some of them.

That's what I would call a "UniSexy" scent. It can lean to any gender and work for anyone ;)
